Affirmations – The Secret Affirmations For an Abundant, Prosperous Life – Part One

Do you want to have an abundant and prosperous life? The movie, The Secret, has sparked a lot of controversy about the Law of Attraction but this isn’t what this article is about, it’s about the affirmations used to bring about an abundance in your life and allowing prosperity to overflow you.

Let’s get straight into it.

I Am A Money Magnet

Remember, a magnet has 2 polarities… a positive and a negative one. For some people, the word “money” brings about a negative vibe. You want to make sure you are in the positive polarity when you say this.

Everything I Touch Turns To Gold

This concept comes from the Greek myth about King Midas (where you get the phrase ‘Midas Touch’) about how he can turn everything he touch into gold in his greed for riches. But this ability left out the ability to CHOOSE what can be turn and what cannot.

Turns out that he turns his food to gold (so he can’t eat) and even his beloved daughter to gold. He didn’t want his ability anymore at the end of the story.

When you hear this phrase, remember you always have the power to choose what will become successful and turn to gold. You don’t have to sacrifice the REAL gold in your life for material gold. The power to choose/ignore is perhaps the most powerful ability we all have, use it wisely.

I Have More Riches Than King Solomon’s Mines

King Solomon’s Mines is actually a novel written in 1885 and has been adapted into film at least 6 times. It’s about explorers who risk their lives and embark on an adventure seeking countless treasures. When you say this affirmation, open your eyes and see the existing riches you have right now.

A roof over your head is something millions of people don’t have. Access to the internet is something millions of people, even to this day, do not have (some don’t even know such a thing exists!) Having some savings money in your bank account means you are richer than a whole lot of other people on this earth. Being alive and seeking a way of success means that you have a fighting chance to get out of whatever you wish to get out from.

You already have riches… and it is great.

Online Education – Do You Want To Return To School?

Online Education – Do You Want To Return To School?

In our rapidly changing global world, millions of students are currently taking college-level online (distance education) classes. Private and public universities in the United States and abroad are offering Certificate, Baccalaureate, Masters and Doctoral degree programs over the Internet to adult learners. From Ivy League to Community Colleges, an increasing number of students can log on to their classes from home, work or while commuting by bus and train. Adult learners frequently juggle a myriad of responsibilities including raising children, career, and care giving for senior parents. Formerly, a university of interest may have been out of reach geographically. Presently, an employee located in the United States can register for classes taught half way around the world. Non-traditional venues outside of the more traditional classroom offer viable opportunities for continuing one’s education.

Adult learners make up the largest demographic of post-secondary institutions in the United States. For this student group, the benefits of online academic programs are:

o To update current skill sets

o To learn new skill sets

o To earn an undergraduate or graduate level degree

o The fulfillment of academic requirements necessary for a current job or promotion

o To change careers

o The satisfaction of certification or licensure requirements

o Personal and spiritual growth and development

Not for the faint of heart, success in distance education academic programs requires high levels of stamina, discipline, and motivation. A good candidate must be computer literate, possess the ability to read massive amounts of material in short-time frames, have good writing and communication skills, hold high expectations for good grades, enjoy applying critical thinking and commit a minimum of 15 hours per week per course (be prepared to allocate more, if necessary).

The Internet and the World Wide Web provide the critical technology platform for distance education. University technological and operational infrastructures (including hardware, software and transmission) provide the additional cornerstones to the technology platform needed to execute distance education programs. The delivery of academic content may be accomplished in several formats. The more traditional venues are correspondence courses, videos, audio-cassettes, CD-ROMS, and broadcasts via television and radio. Modern formats include synchronous and/or asynchronous education content distribution channels. Synchronous delivery refers to real-time interaction between instructor and student i.e., two-way video-conferences, whiteboards, chat rooms, telephone software (ex. Skype), and mobile technology devices. Asynchronous interaction does not involve real time communication. Instead, interaction between instructor and student is accomplished through the use of e-mail, DVDs, and the traditional education delivery formats.

As a student, you will need a desktop or laptop computer, an Internet Service provider, a cell phone, software (i.e., word processor, financial spreadsheet, calendar and Power Point), a backup storage disk drive (nothing can make your heart drop faster than losing a body of work that you’ve diligently developed), a headset with microphone for virtual team discussions and the traditional school supplies. Optional technology may include memory upgrades, scanners, digital scanners, and fax machines.

Ten Tips For The Successful Online Student:

o Have a credit card or debit card ready for downloading e-books and other required course reading materials.

o Maintain a list of more than one bookstore in the event that a required textbook is sold out. It’s always a good idea to obtain a list of the required textbooks midway through the term and order in advance for the following term.

o Do not be shy about asking for help if needed. I cannot stress enough the importance of communicating openly with your professor or instructor about course material that you may not understand. Online academic programs tend to move rapidly and course content that you do not understand will most likely cause problems down the road resulting in frustration and possibly, lower grades.

o Seek out a tutor. If there are areas that you know need strengthening, even before the class begins, have a tutor on stand-by. Also, the telephone number of a computer specialist should be in your rolodex.

o Time management will be critical. Keep a planner. Read your syllabus as soon as it becomes available and plan accordingly.

o Uphold your responsibilities as a virtual team member. Your contributions will directly impact the team grade.

o Exercise. Long hours at the computer can cause strain on the neck, shoulder, arm and back muscles, not to mention the hands. Remember to periodically stretch and tone.

o Eat a healthy diet. Keep good healthy recipes handy. Hydrate. Avoid heavy snacking on calorie-laden food and instead eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Avoid white flour and choose high fiber grains.

o See your doctor. A healthy body feeds a healthy mind.

o Stay in contact with your Academic Advisor to be sure that you are satisfying the requirements needed to complete your degree.

In the Fall term of 2006, 3.5 million students representing 20% of all U.S. higher education students, took at least one online course (2007. The Sloan Consortium). It is projected that distance education will continue to grow in popularity domestically and internationally. The most commonly offered online academic programs are Business, Computer Science and Engineering, Education, Engineering, Library Science, Nursing, and Public Health. Whether you select a community college, public institution, private institution or Ivy League university, enjoy the learning experience.

Know the Re-Sale Value Before You Buy That New Motorcycle

Know the Re-Sale Value Before You Buy That New Motorcycle

You should known exactly what the resale value of that new motorcycle is before you buy it. Out side of rider compatibility, resale value is probably the most important aspect in buying a new motorcycle. The reason for this is that when the time comes to trade your motorcycle for a new one, you will want to know that you will get what your motorcycle is worth, and you will not owe anything that will be tacked on to the end of your next motorcycle financing. I can assure you that in most cases you will not get what you think your motorcycle trade in is worth. An example of this is, I bought a new Honda VTX 1300S in 2005, and in 2007 I wanted to trade up for a new Yamaha Raider.

I went back to the Motor Sport dealer that I bought my VTX from in hopes of getting a great trade in offer. Even though I had purchased my motorcycle from them, the best the dealer could do was giving me $4800.00 trade in for my used motorcycle. I stilled owed roughly $6500.00 on the VTX, so I would have had to tack the difference on to the end of my financing for the new Yamaha Raider to pay off my Honda VTX or pay the difference out of pocket. I did have one other option though, and that was to sell the Honda my self to get what the bike was worth. The option to sell my Honda out right was the best way for me to get the best return and assure that I could pay off my motorcycle before I financed the new Raider. However, with all of the special incentives and deals on new motorcycles offered by the dealer, trying to sell my used VTX was easier said then done.

I parked the VTX in the parking lot next to my house with a for sale sign on it. The road was busy with a lot of traffic. I did get an occasional passerby to stop and look at it but no calls or offers came in at all. Next, I put an ad in my local newspaper. It was not that pricey, but it wasn’t cheep either. I ran my ad for a couple of weeks and didn’t even get one call. Roadrunner has a classified advertisement section; so I placed an ad there as well, still not luck. I was just about to give up and go back to the dealer, take my losses and get my new Yamaha when I decided to try one more thing. I went to Google and I did a search for used motorcycles. I was amazed at how many used motorcycle auction portals and classified websites there are on the Internet. I did a bit of investigating and found a couple of motorcycle-classified webpage’s that looked promising. I was a little surprised they really weren’t very expensive at all. I placed an ad with a photo, price, and contact information and in just a few days, I started to get interested callers. I did finally sell my Honda VTX 1300S and I did buy the Yamaha Raider. I could have saved my self a lot of work and worry if I had done my homework, shopped around and bought a motorcycle with a better resale value. However, since I didn’t , selling my used motorcycle my self and getting the retail price for it was the best option.

If you are like me, you probably want to get as much out of the sale of your motorcycle as you can. The first thing you need to know is what your used motorcycle is worth. You should go on line to the Kelly Blue Book webpage and look in the motorcycle section. You could also go to the NADA guides on line, again go to the motorcycle section and look up your motorcycles make, model and year, and get the retail value. You can also find out the trade in value of your motorcycle just in case you do decide to trade it in. Once you know how much to ask for your used motorcycle, take a little time before you start to advertise and do a bit of investigating. Look for local publications, newspapers, and web page classifieds where you might be able to place an advertisement.

Compile a list of these classified sources. Find out how much it will cost to place an ad in each one. Find out if they have any testimonials or if you can contact some one that has posted an advertisement in their classifieds and made their sale. If you find a good news publication or webpage classified that has a great record of selling motorcycles then the chances are good that you will sell your motorcycle as well. Once you find where to place your motorcycle for sale ad, you will need just a few things to get the best bang for your buck. First, you need to think about and write down what you want to say in your ad. “Motorcycle for Sale” just will not work in today’s highly completive used motorcycle market.

If you’re selling a vintage lime green 1999 Yamaha Virago that only has 2500 miles on it and was once owned by the Madonna, then you need to say so. The more descriptive you are in your advertisement the better chance you have of some one looking for what you have to sell. The next thing you want to have is a nice clean and clear photo or photos of the motorcycle. Some times a description is not enough. Even if your description tells everything there is to know about your used bike.

I am sure you have heard a picture is worth a thousand words. Well it is true. Suppose some one is looking for that lime green 1999 Yamaha Virago once owned by Madonna, they have seen it in a magazine or on a news show. They know that there is such a bike, but is the one you have, that bike? If you have photos of the bike, they would recognize it as the same bike that they have been looking for and would more then likely buy it.Ok you have your price, description and your photos. You will need one more thing to get your used motorcycle sold. In my opinion, it is the most important thing you need to put in your advertisement. Can you guess what it is? It is your contact information. With out that no amount of descriptive poetry, colorful photography or reduced price will make the sale.

If someone does not know how to get in contact with you, your bike will never sell and you will never get the new motorcycle of your dreams. Take it from me. I have tried both print media classifieds as well as online classifieds to sell my motorcycle and in my opinion, the cheapest, easiest and quickest way to sell your used motorcycle and get the price you are asking is to sell it online. I’m out of here. I am going riding…

Finding the Best Airline Travel Deals

Finding the Best Airline Travel Deals

We are all hearing some pretty strange stories about how the airlines are charging people these days. I just recently heard about an airline that is considering laying their passengers and pricing their tickets accordingly. That’s pretty drastic stuff in my book, but then again, maybe it is justified. In any event, booking airline tickets can become a pretty expensive proposition.

But we as customers of the airlines have a way to fight back. And what I mean by fighting back is shopping smart and saving money. Whether you’re traveling on business or for personal reasons there is no excuse not to be able to find the best airline travel deals. It is a simple matter of knowing where to look and then actually doing your homework by searching out the best airfares. It is not at all difficult and in my opinion, well worth the effort.

I personally like to use the Internet to shop and compare airline travel deals. There are literally dozens and dozens of websites that are independent of the airlines and are therefore not beholden to them. What that means is that it is in their best interest to show you the very best airfares available.

Some of these websites can be a little bit intimidating at first but you will soon find that they are actually quite easy to navigate. They can actually be quite enjoyable once you get the hang of them. I see travel websites as treasure maps and it is up to me to find the treasure, which in this case are exceptional airline travel deals.

What you will find is that these travel sites usually offer a whole lot more than just airline tickets and information. Many of them offer package deals that include hotels, car rentals and visits to attractions such as theme parks and museums. Actually makes perfect sense doesn’t it? The bottom line is that you can get great airfares as a part of a travel package.

Another excellent alternative is booking last minute flight reservations. Usually to find the best deals you have to book your flight well in advance. But a little known secret is that if you are flexible enough and can travel at the last minute there are some great deals to be had. Airlines faced with last-minute cancellations will price their tickets to sell as opposed to having those seats go empty and the airline not making any money on them.

If you do find a great deal on last minute cheap flights then you must be prepared to travel at odd times. Usually what happens is that the airlines have most of their empty seats during their red-eye flights. But for my money, traveling at odd hours of the morning and night is an inconvenience that is more than compensated for by the savings enjoyed for the airline tickets.

I have personally had great success and save a lot of money by doing my comparison shopping online and taking advantage of those great airline travel deals that are available. They are out there believe me, you just need to know where to look.

Start Your Financial Retirement Planning Now!

Start Your Financial Retirement Planning Now!

With the economy on the decline, retirement may seem impossible. However, if you are concerned about the financial security of your retirement years, you have to be serious about financial retirement planning. Financial retirement planning is the first step to ensure that the lifestyle you’re dreaming of at retirement will have a better chance of becoming a reality.

No matter how old or young you are, it’s never the wrong time to think about financial retirement planning and start a retirement savings plan. However, the earlier you begin the better off you will be. Chances are you will have a larger nest egg at retirement if you begin saving at 30 years of age instead of 60. With more years to invest your investment will have a better chance of recovering from any drops or bump along the way. The longer your money is invested the better your chance of securing your future. By planning for your retirement needs, you’ll identify what you need to do in order to secure your future and be in a better position to deal with most issues that may otherwise confuse you and do damage to you financially.

The first consideration for your retirement savings plan will be where your investment money will go and for how long. As a basic strategy, you should invest some of your money in short term investments, medium-term investments and long term investments. The type of investment usually is determined by your time horizon. Generally, the more time you have before having to sell off the investment for cash, the riskier the investment.

If your time horizon is five or more years, which would be considered long term investments, you can choose investments that appreciate over time. Growth stocks and real estate are good long term investments if you have many years left before retirement. Volatile stocks or CDs are considered short term investments, investments that are held for a year or less, and should be reevaluated several times a year.

Times are different – you can no longer take the retirement planning advice of an investment adviser as gospel when it comes to financial retirement planning. You need to educate yourself and take charge of your money.

If you find planning for your retirement needs a daunting task, there are many retirement planning tools you can turn to for help. These tools include well-written books that can explain the difference between things like bonds and stock, etc. There are also individual classes and seminars that you can take to help you craft your retirement investment plan to reach the goals you set for your retirement.

You don’t want to find out too late that you don’t have enough money to cover your retirement needs. You must educate yourself to gain an understanding of what is possible with the money you invest. Generally, a balanced retirement savings plan should include investments in treasury bills, money market and savings account to provide accessible cash; stocks in small, medium and large companies for growth and appreciation; and other investments such as real estate for long term appreciation.

Your financial retirement planning should take into account the number of years you have left until you plan to retire. The more years you have to invest your money, the more risk you should take with your investment money. If you have only a few years before retiring, you should have more of your investment funds in readily available cash. You don’t want to be at retirement’s door with most of your money tied up in the stock market only to see a big portion of the money disappear in a market downturn, which can happen at any time.

If you do have many years before retirement, aggressive stocks and real estate can be a sound investment. Your nest-egg may growth faster with this investment strategy because the funds are shielded from certain taxes, and because real estate is a good hedge against inflation.

Financial retirement planning is not rocket science. It’s mostly common sense. Besides there are many retirement planning tools that you can use to help you create the best retirement savings plan for you. However, even the best laid out plan needs to be reviewed and adjusted with the circumstances. Review your retirement investment portfolio at lease once a year and make adjustments as warranted. Don’t let short term ups and downs in the market throw you off your path that leads to your goals. Ups and downs in the investment market are part of the normal cycle of investing. Stick to your informed long term plans and the bumps along the way should all even out over the years to provide for your retirement needs.

Conflict is one of Your Best Friends

Conflict is one of Your Best Friends

There can be no personal development in your personal life and your professional life without attending to the questions of:

How do you react when circumstances envelop you in conflict?

What actually pushes your buttons?

How quickly do you recognize that your buttons have been pushed, overtly or covertly?

Do you have strategies in place to deal with the above?

Do you re-evaluate these regularly and update them?

or

Do you fly by the seat of your pants and hope for the best when conflict takes a leap at you?

The Concise Macquarie Dictionary defines ‘conflict’ as:

o To be in opposition or at variance

o Disagree

o Antagonism as of interest or principles

o A prolonged struggle

o Controversy

Interesting range of definitions, wouldn’t you say? Quite a range along the continuum of the word from mild to strong in the emotional response it can trigger.

Let us look at why conflict is on the increase.

Previously, people

o were taught to avoid confrontations of any description or degree as it was regarded as impolite

o avoided unpleasant situations because they were the catalyst for an unpleasant working environment or relationship

o tended to work solo in their respective areas of expertise being compartmentalized

o accepted their place in the hierarchy of the work and social strata

If a person stood up for what he/she believed to be just, fair or logical, they were looked upon as being highly aggressive and looking for a fight.

Today

o People are encouraged to work collaboratively and it is expected, which leads to an intensification of the conflict level

o Avoiding expressions of differences is no longer accepted, nor is it viable in today’s fast-paced business world

o Solutions benefiting all stakeholders can only occur when working through a problem rather than applying the emu-method

Various types of conflicts can be recognized, the main ones are at the:

o Intrapersonal Level: This occurs when one person is at loggerheads with a group over what s/he feels is best for the team

o Interpersonal Level: This is when one person is at loggerheads with another single person, or when a person intervenes between two people who are having a dispute

o Group Level: When a person is in discord with peers, one can identify the group level category

o Inter-group Level: This is where it gets a bit more complex and greater negotiation skills are required. This level occurs when a person needs to intervene in conflicting groups

o Human Systems Level: Apart from excellent negotiation skills, intervention at this level often needs the assistance of arbitration. At this level, the organization as a whole may be involved in a wider publicity of the conflict such as in the media, and specialized personnel from the organization plus outside specialists may need to be brought in to deal with the conflict issue/s

As you can see from the above, with the growth of personal and professional freedom of expression, has also developed a more complex blend the conflict hierarchy.

To put the topic of conflict into perspective, let us look at the negative and positive aspects of conflict.

Negative Aspects of Conflict

o Time is wasted when an individual is not aware of what pushes their buttons and they how they then react. Each individual needs to learn about themselves in this area and develop strategies to overcome any personal shortcomings when such situations arise

o Time is wasted when an organization does not have training programs set aside for their staff to develop the insight mentioned in the above point. An organization also needs to demonstrate a clear, unbiased, empathetic policy that employees can refer to when conflict arises

o Stress is a bi-product of conflict

o Being distracted from the real tasks of one’s job when conflict occurs pervades not only those involved in the conflict but others as well

o The conflict affects others outside the immediate Levels mentioned above

o Conflict not only causes local disruption, but can also spread outside the organization, eg industrial action

o Conflict always damages relationships to some degree if not handled appropriately

Positive Aspects of Conflict

o Conflict identifies that there are different opinions in the organization, which is good, otherwise the organization would be static and eventually become a dinosaur. Even Mismatches are valuable

o This recognition allows parties to discuss the different opinions

o Recognition of conflict provides a platform of opportunity for resolving differences

o This leads to new ways of thinking and behaving

o Communication is improved

o Leading to improved relationships

o Knowledge and learning increases

o All of the above positive aspects improve organizational outcomes

As with all aspects in life and business, the attitude you take is going to determine whether a circumstance is going to be viewed as

o an opportunity for growth for all concerned

o an opportunity to show respect and appreciation for those involved

o a desire to continue on your quest to live life ecologically, ie good and safe for self, good and safe for others, and good and safe for the planet

With these last three points in mind, conflict is a good friend, for whatever assists the individual to expand to their best self can only be an asset.

A final quote from Carolyn Schrock-Shenk validates the importance of training in the communication skills of conflict management and resolution:

True dialogue is not a life jacket when the boat is sinking.

It is the boat itself, and very clever crafting is required to hold it together when the storm of diversity inevitably crashes it about.

Why People Really Buy Anything

Why People Really Buy Anything

Before you can understand the sales process, first you must understand why people really buy anything. If we know how people make buying decisions, what reasons they base them on and what motives lie behind their decisions we will be equipped to direct our sales presentation correctly and effectively.

For someone who has worked in direct sales for over 23 years it is t is truly staggering to see how little time sales companies and their sales people spend discussing the buying process. How can you sell if you don’t know how people buy? You can’t!

We are going to discuss three rules of why people buy which we help us to direct our sales presentations to where they will work best.

Rule 1 People buy for emotional reasons

One of the biggest mistakes that is made by all salespeople is: they feel comfortable if their product is cheaper than that of their competitors. They then try to show their customers as many features of their product as possible and if they don’t make the sales, drive away thinking ‘if my product was just a little bit cheaper I would have made that sale’.

We often feel that if we prove with lots of facts, figures and features that our product is the best value, people will buy from us. The truth of the matter is people buy for emotional reasons and then justify that decision with the facts later.

An example of that would be a man decides to buy a new BMW. His factual justification is, its tax deductible, it will have a good retentive resale value, it will cost him less in repairs because it a quality car and it will be more reliable etc.

The actual emotional reason he bought it was because he would feel good when he drove it and his friends would respect him more because he looks successful. Once we accept that fact that will massively alter the way we sell to our customers.

Rule 2 They buy because they want it or need it

Although there has been a plethora of books written on buyer’s motives, you can simplify the whole process as follows: there are only two reasons people buy anything:

o They need it

o They want it

Needs tend to be thing we have to spend money on i.e. ‘utilities’. These include the food we eat, our gas, electric and water bills, our rent or mortgage, council tax bills and transportation and food and petrol etc. How happily do we spend money on the things we need? Often times paying for our needs are considered a chore! Do you ever hear of people who are feeling down paying their gas bill early as a form of retail therapy? No!

We do not get excited when we spend on needs, if we want to change our utilities suppliers we tend to make the decision based on price. Generally they are non-emotional decisions based on logic.

Because they want it

This really is the biggest motivator when it comes to people making buying decisions. When you assist people to really want our products because of the difference it will make to their life styles, selling becomes easier and much more enjoyable. Wants really a much stronger driving force in the buying process?

o Have you ever bought yourself a Kit Kat?

o Have you ever bought yourself some named brand clothing?

o Have you ever eaten in a restaurant?

o Have you ever been on a foreign holiday?

Have you ever ‘needed’ to do any of the above? No, you the bought the above because you wanted to! When we ‘want’ to buy something we get enthusiastic about it, we enjoy it and we use it as a way to reward ourselves.

Rule 3 Meeting expectations does not make sales

The third thing to remember about the buying process is this. Meeting expectation does not make sales.

The truth is, our customers expect certain features to come as standard with our products. They are not overly impressed when we mention them or are they particularly motivated to buy our products when we list them. These features do have some importance because the absence of any features they expect would motivate them not to buy! The fact that your product has all these features is not enough in itself to motivate your customer to buy.

During your presentation you need to uncover the emotional reasons behind your customers buying decision and be alert for signs of them. This is achieved by using skillful open ended questions and listening, no I mean really listening, to the answers your customers give.

Always aim your product at peoples wants and not needs. Slanting your products toward your customers wants is an easy sale, purchasing your product could be a way of rewarding themselves for all their hard work. Selling your product as a need is hard work as the buying decision will invariably be based on price, which is dull, boring and uninspiring for you and your customer!

Finally, do not fall into the trap of thinking the more features you list the better value for money it will seem to your customer. Concentrate on the additional features or unique selling points your products has which will really excite them to buy. It is those additional emotional features and benefits that your product posses that will motivate your customer to buy your product.

This is a very quick overview of a very important subject. Any of our sales seminars spend time explaining this topic in detail as we know it is the very basis of the sales process. If you can not attend one of our seminars please keep checking our website for other free articles at [http://www.21ksa.co.uk] , we also offer free support for sales people there.

Acne is a common skin problem for most adolescents and also afflicts some adults. People of all ages and backgrounds have had to deal with acne at some point. Hence, there has long been a desire to prevent it or cure it. We will look at some of the causes of acne as well as some of the ways in which people treated. Our hope is that you will gain a better understanding of why people get acne and what they can do for treatment and prevention.

Can acne be more serious than simply a cosmetic issue?

Many people ask this question. Perhaps you are wondering if acne has ever gotten so bad for someone that it turned into something worse. The answer is “yes”. Though acne is a larger health issue for only some people, it is still worth noting the development of the skin irritation into something more troublesome.

In some cases, acne leads to the scarring of the skin or the outbreak of a serious infection. This form of acne is known as cystic acne. Much like its name applies, cystic acne results in a large bump or cyst. Once a cyst heals, it may leave an obvious scar. It should be noted, however, that cystic acne is rare. If you believe that your acne is turning into something more serious than the usual skin irritation, consult a doctor.

How long will acne last?

The good news is that for most people, acne is a somewhat temporary situation. Ask any teenager about acne, however, and he or she will likely tell you that a fear is being destined to a life of acne. Such is the sense of despair and embarrassment caused by acne.

These teens will be glad to know that most will stop developing acne as they near their twenties, if not sooner. They can also rest assured that in most cases, the effects of acne are much less harsh as people exit their teen years. Unfortunately for some, acne can linger for many years after puberty.

Some adults experience severe cases of acne or notice occasional outbreaks as they near their thirties and beyond. In some extremely rare cases, individuals who have never had acne develop it in their later years.

What are the mental effects of acne?

Acne may show a body’s failure to properly deal with hormonal changes. Acne can indicate that a person is not dealing with stress effectively. It may be evidence of a potentially serious allergic reaction to a medication or other element. It is not these effects of acne that tend to do the most damage, though.

More than a health issue, acne is known causing people (mainly teens) a sense of shame and embarrassment. Acne is falsely associated with being unclean. Clear, healthy skin is associated with cleanliness, while severe forms of acne are often believed to be the result of sanitary neglect. Not only that, acne can be ugly and turn people away.

Most people who experience severe acne are emotionally scarred by the social rejection, leading to adolescent emotional insecurity and a sense of self-doubt. Because of this, acne should be treated as quickly and as thoroughly as possible.

Isn’t it true that staying clean helps prevent acne?

It is always better to rid your skin of toxins and dirt that accumulate during your normal routine. So yes, to some extent, it is true that washing skin can help prevent or decrease acne. Acne is a chemical matter, and it is something that occurs beneath the surface of the skin more so than on the skin itself.

Both daily cleansing and care of one’s skin will help reduce the bacteria that rests on the skin, but they cannot lessen the testosterone levels beneath the surface of the skin that help produce acne.

Understanding this basic fact should help reduce some of the stigma attached to acne. It should also allow people who suffer from acne to take some comfort in knowing that they are not necessarily less clean than others. The truth is that they have very little control over what is going on beneath their skin.

How important is a healthy diet to preventing acne?

It is no coincidence that people who eat healthy food tend to have skin that shines and glows. In contrast, think of someone you know who eats nothing but junk food. It is likely that they have some issues with acne. Experts agree that a good, healthy diet can go a long way towards either preventing acne or helping diminish it. The Chinese believe, and have been widely accepted in their belief, that acne is solely attributed to a poor diet.

They claim that too much sugar or grease leads to the potential for acne. Thus, they discourage the consumption of excessive amounts of chocolate and fried foods. Fruits and vegetables are generally considered better for the skin and a deterrent to acne. Another factor known to eliminate acne is continual drinking of water. Drinking plenty of it is your best bet to avoid acne.

Autoresponders: 15 Creative and Profitable Ways to Use Autoresponders

An interested visitor who has been strolling through your site has finally come to just what she is looking for and is about to make a purchase. It’s a sunny afternoon, and her cat, who happens to be sitting on the moss under the visitor’s large fifty-year-old snow-rose bonsai tree, suddenly jumps down, and the priceless tree topples over.

In the blink of an eye, your visitor exits your site, and your sale is dust – unless you have had the foresight to utilize an autoresponder that has captured her email address. If you have installed an autoresponder, you can then follow-up with her, and in all probability, make the sale when the poor woman has finished repotting her precious bonsai.

Autoresponders are remarkable, versatile programs that do so much more than just automatically answer your email. Here are a few ideas that will help you to creatively and

productively use your autoresponder to transform the casual visitor into a profitable customer. Use your autoresponder to:

1. Publish a newsletter. Certain quality autoresponders will manage subscriptions and follow-up with interested prospects. Your newsletter can keep your visitors informed about your services or products, while building your reputation as a credible expert in your particular business.

2. Publish a newsletter only for your affiliates. Inform them of current sales you are running and of promotional material that your affiliates can use themselves to increase their commissions. Include tips, advice, and techniques that your affiliates can use to successfully go out and promote your business.

3. Write reviews. Cover books, software, music, e-books, movies, etc., and put each review in an autoresponder. Review your affiliate programs, using a link to your affiliate’s page in your autoresponder.

4. Distribute your articles. Writing and distributing targeted articles is a powerful tool to build your business credibility, bring traffic to your site, and increase your sales potential. If your articles contain valuable information, many editors will print what is known as a resource box for you. A resource box contains your bio and a brief description of your service or product. It can also contain your autoresponder address. Let’s say you’ve

written fifty articles. Put them on separate autoresponder accounts and create a master list that contains the titles of each article, the autoresponder address, and a brief abstract. Then promote your master list. Additionally, include your publishing guidelines so your affiliates can add their articles to your list, increasing the number of writers who are represented in your article list.

5. Create mailing lists. Inform subscribers to your articles when you’ve written new ones that they may want to publish in their own newsletter or website.

6. Automate your sales process. Use an ad to insure repeated exposure of your message, which has been proven to effectively increase sales. In your ad, put your autoresponder address where a visitor will be exposed to numerous marketing materials. This multiplies the chances

of converting visitors into customers. For example, if you’re selling a particular product, put testimonials about how spectacular it is on your autoresponder, and add a detailed, enticing description of your product.

7. Distribute advertising. Let’s say you sell advertising on your website or in your newsletter or e-zine. Set your autoresponder to send the information about rates and how to place an ad automatically to all prospects’ email addresses. Then have your autoresponder follow-up. It can also send notification of any special deals you are currently offering.

8. Distribute an email course. Each day, have your autoresponder send out another lesson. Just be sure that each lesson has quality content – not a sales pitch. Your content will do the selling for you, and will do it much more effectively. You can include tips centered on a different topic for each lesson, illustrating how your product will benefit the reader. Include the tangible benefits the visitor will reap by purchasing your product. Make sure to include a paragraph or two at the end of each lesson enticing your prospect to consider making a purchase.

9. Automate a reminder about your service or product after a visitor has completed your course. This will increase the possibility of sales from visitors who have taken your course but are dragging their feet about actually making a purchase. You can also use these reminders to promote new products or services, and the products and services of your affiliate programs.

10. Distribute free reports. This gives your visitor an idea of the type of information you can provide and the quality of your product or service. Make sure these reports are not sales letters or you will more than likely lose a potential customer than gain a sale.

11. Create trivia quizzes on your site and place the answers in an autoresponder. Your visitor will then be motivated to request your autoresponder, and you will have a record of the visitors’ email addresses who took your quiz. Or create a contest and have any visitors that enter send their responses to your autoresponder. Your autoresponder can be set-up to send them a confirmation of their entry.

12. Offer a trial version of your product. Give your prospects a sample of your ebook, course, software, membership, etc. People who are exposed to a little taste often end up wanting the whole pie. You can also capture their email addresses when you offer them a free trial from your website. Set up your autoresponder to give instructions on how to obtain their free trial, and then make sure to follow-up to try and close the sale.

13. Link to hidden pages on your autoresponder. For example, a hidden page could be your affiliate page that contains graphics, promotional articles, and text links that interested affiliates can make use of. Inform visitors that they may have free access to your affiliate page by simply requesting your autoresponder. You will then gather a list of visitors who may be interested in becoming your affiliates.

14. Use an autoresponder on your order page. Post a request form for visitors to be notified of special offers or discounts in the future. This creates a very effective mailing list that contains the names of people who are already your customers.

15. Put your links page on your autoresponder. It should contain up to fifty links that would be of particular interest to your visitors. Make sure to add your own promotional copy at the top or bottom of this page.

Now that you have proof that autoresponders can be used creatively, see if you can come up with some brilliant ideas of your own!

Directors of Animal Welfare: Helping Los Angeles Communities and The Animals That Inhabit Them

Directors of Animal Welfare: Helping Los Angeles Communities and The Animals That Inhabit Them

It’s a man’s sympathy with all creatures that truly makes him a man. Until he extends his circle of compassion to all living things, man himself will not find peace.

These words spoken decades ago by Albert Schweitzer ring true to a special group of dedicated and caring Los Angelenos. Appointed to be the eyes and ears of those who can not speak for themselves, The Directors of Animal Welfare (DAWs) work with their Neighborhood Councils to tackle problems, initiate proposals and hold events aimed at solving problems or creating awareness on issues that help humans and animals live together harmoniously. In 1999, the new L.A. City Charter divided Los Angeles into 90 geographic areas and a Neighborhood Council was empowered in each to represent its respective neighborhoods.

In October 2004, Valley Glen Council member Dr. Charlotte Laws introduced the idea of appointing a representative to each Neighborhood Council to handle animal-related issues. The Director of Animal Welfare program was part of her proposal to make Los Angeles a No-Kill City. With approximately 40,000 dogs, cats and small animals euthanized in L.A. annually at a cost of $14 million, it is a crisis in need of resolution. Valley Glen, won over by Dr. Laws’ enthusiasm and good ideas, promptly appointed her to the position for their area. Additionally, Laws proposed the formation of a California Animal Commission. Comprised of non-paid individuals committed to animal welfare, the Commission would serve in an advisory capacity to help cities and counties achieve the no-kill goal at their public shelters. According to Laws, “This would be an important first step towards ending the needless killing of tens of thousands of animals each year.” If formed, California would be the first to have such a Commission and would lead the nation by recognizing the plight of its animals.

In Los Angeles County there are 2.6 million dogs & cats in private homes, so helping them peacefully cohabitate with humans makes good sense. Recently Ed Boks, General Manager of the L.A. Department of Animal Services (LAAS), wrote a letter to all 90 Neighborhood Councils encouraging them to support the DAW Program and select a stakeholder as their representative. Currently 35 DAWs have been appointed, so the program is still looking for more individuals to get involved. With eleven committees, there is something for everyone, from Spay/Neuter Education to the Elephant exhibit issues at the L.A. Zoo; from disaster preparedness plans, to horse trails to animal cruelty cases.

According to Burbank DAW George Shea, “The value of the DAW Program is simply that if you’re into animal [issues], you can feel isolated – a bunch of separate groups not knowing what each other is doing and with no real clout behind us. Becoming a DAW has brought it all together for me…I’m not alone in my struggles; we exchange ideas and support each others goals.”

Reseda DAW Missy Woodward was already active in her Neighborhood Council before being appointed its Director of Animal Welfare. Her Council took their time, listened to Woodward speak, had their President attend a DAW Meeting and asked a lot of questions. They then felt that appointing a DAW to their Council would be mutually beneficial. A city on the verge of revitalization, Reseda has made Emergency Preparedness a priority and hopes to furnish a van with all the supplies their community will need in the event of the “big one.” Community members will be CERT (Certified Emergency Rescue Team) trained and preparations will be made for their animals as well. Woodward feels “the Katrina Disaster showed us the best and worst,” and she hopes that Los Angelenos will learn from it and be prepared – for themselves and for their animals.

Kris Kelly, DAW for Beverly Hills and Pacific Palisades, feels the program’s biggest accomplishment to date is the relationship formed with Ed Boks. “I think Mr. Boks and his department no longer feel alienated by the animal community. We’re working together for all of Los Angeles.” The DAW Animal Abuse Committee, which Kelly chairs, was recently asked to join with the new Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force to share ideas and achieve goals. According to Kelly, “The only way we are truly going to make L.A. a no-kill city is by joining hands, not fighting with each other.” Differing groups have varying approaches but their goals are the same, so the DAW Program is serving as a unifying conduit to make things happen — a sort of “United Nations” of Animal Welfare.

Case in point: The combined efforts of several DAWs, the West Hollywood Neighborhood Council and the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department recently arrested a puppy dealer who was abusing underage puppies. This criminal now lives in a cell far roomier than the animals housed in our City & County Shelters, but at least he is unable to hurt any more dogs — at least for the time being.

Atwater Village, situated near the Los Angeles River, has long been a dumping ground for unwanted pets, so its five DAWs organized a monthly Pet Adoption Fair at the Farmer’s Market on Glendale Blvd. Additionally, the group educates residents who are unaware of leash and chain laws. According to Beatrice Shapiro, “Any resident violating a leash law is first given information on the rules and best ways to contain their pets. On a second offense, the resident is given a courtesy notice with the offending Municipal Code attached. If this doesn’t get the message across, Animal Control is contacted regarding the violation.”

Over in Lake Balboa, Lisa Reveen is busy on an avian cause. “A well-meaning lady arrives each morning to feed the birds, but her good intentions have led to chaos for all,” Reveen explains. “Commuters cut through the park to avoid the main roads and since there are no speed bumps or visible stop signs, they do so at high rates of speed. The ducks, geese and other species of birds, now dependent on their morning feeding, are no longer mindful of the cars, dogs or people who mean them harm and are losing their lives in alarming numbers.” Reveen is asking for speed bumps and stop signs, as well as visible law enforcement to slow down traffic and prevent people from feeding the wildlife.

Attorney Tiffany Krog, who is the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council DAW, hopes to put her legal expertise to use for the animals by encouraging LAAS to put into operation a screening process for potential adopters of Pit Bulls. Krog states, “By helping animals and promoting their welfare, humans are also benefited – it has been established for some time that animal abuse is a clear indicator of violence towards humans. Not only is this breed physically abused, it is wrongfully maligned and misrepresented. The reality is that Pit Bulls are being used successfully as search and rescue dogs and have rated higher in temperament tests than Golden Retrievers according to the American Temperament Testing Society’s statistics.” Additionally, Krog is working towards ensuring that a foster program is implemented by LAAS so that animals can be placed in a home or foster home while court cases are still pending. Currently evidence animals are held in specials areas of the shelter where they can not be seen by the general public and therefore do not have a chance of being adopted. An abuse case can take a year or more to prosecute and all this time the animals are hidden away.

The Directors of Animal Welfare have a lot on their plate and with kudos to Charlotte Laws, the program has created an environment that welcomes all causes and points of view. The individuals come from diverse backgrounds with differing priorities, yet they are finding the organization an excellent forum to make things happen. After speaking with a dozen or more members of this grassroots organization, I find they work like the many spokes of a wheel…together they move forward and keep themselves in balance. Most are pet parents and concerned with Animal Welfare (those whose goals are to prevent suffering and provide care for animals) and a few are Animal Rights Activists (those who wish to end all human exploitation of animals). There are Realtors, attorneys, rescue workers, hair stylists, photographers, actors, business professionals, athletes and at least one medical doctor who together are turning the wheel of progress and hope to roll Los Angeles in the direction of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision: The moral greatness of national should be judged by the way it treats it animals.

For more information visit http://www.dawprogram.org or contact DAWs President Dr. Charlotte Laws at (818)781-5280. Already the program has spread to Orange & San Diego Counties and even to Canada. Don’t just say you want to make a difference, do it! Become a Director of Animal Welfare or an Assistant DAW and take part in your community.
