2 years ago I was introduced to the idea of using articles as a marketing strategy. Like so many other ideas we are subjected to, it didn’t sink in right away. Excuse after excuse, I let procrastination stand in the way.

I had never written an article before …

As I began to see more and more SEO consultants and successful marketers discussing article marekting, I decided to dig in deeper and see what all the fuss was about. It sounded good, and I wanted in too.

Ironically, I begin to read articles about writing articles. Article after article the concepts begin making sense. I understood why article marketing worked, I understood how article marketing worked … but I still had no clue how to start my first article.

I discovered my first article topic quite by accident one evening.

While in a general discussion with another site administrator I realized the KEY to successful articles or any ad copy.

Find a problem and solve it. That is what we all want – we want solutions to our problems!

The scenario went like this.

My colleague offered live event webinars and needed a easy way to update specifics of these classes to members. Further more, I wanted a way to tell people about the live training without the burden of updating these live events through HTML on my web site.

Having some background experiences with blogs, and actively testing different blog creation scripts and services, he welcomed my advise on adopting RSS as an option to easily feed us the training class schedules.

It solved his problem of updating the live class schedules to us, and my problem of updating the content for my visitors.

Realizing the solution to a problem – the research for the article began.

I started in the search engines, read some forums, and gathered facts.

The facts were then picked apart to determine the benefit of each fact. I used those benefits as the central focal point of my article.

My first article “Got Blog” was written and published soon after. Taking that first step and writing that first article, opened the door for me to be able to write a second article, then press releases, and Ebooks now too.

That article was submitted to only 15 free directories, and then I left it alone and went on to other projects.

By digging through all those articles about articles, I inadvertently learned “top notch” techniques from successful article writers themselves.

I felt that learning by this method was so helpful to me, that I created a free guide called “All About Articles the Marketing Advantage “. This guide incorporates all the great articles and techniques that gave me the confidence to build my first article campaign.

The guide was not created until a year after I had published several of my own articles and seen the successful results for myself.

One year later … there are over 140 sites – many of which I have never heard of, some of which are high traffic and successful sites, proudly telling people some interesting tips on using RSS – each one with a healthy link back to my website for more information.

I found the above information by doing a keyword search on Google using the exact phrase of the byline used on that article.

Article writing and circulation has been the single most rewarding “free” promotion effort I have accomplished in my years of trial and error! Be inspired, if I can do it, you can too!

You can use caricatures of yourself in your own promotional material or in your programs to make fun of yourself. You can do the same thing to make fun of your competitors or your competitor’s products by amplifying whatever feature you want to emphasize.

Caricature artists are not too hard to locate. Many times you can find them by looking in the yellow pages under the categories of entertainment or party planning because they frequently perform at parties.

There are three ways to use cartoons: first, you can tell the audience about a cartoon you saw; second, you can cut the cartoon out of its publication and show it; and third, you can make up a cartoon yourself.

I saw a cartoon once where a lady was holding a gun to her purse. The caption said, ‘Give up the keys!’ I use this example in my Business Lite Seminar when I want to illustrate the use of humor to help ease the tension in embarrassing situations. (I have also used this line many times when I am with a woman who is fumbling through her purse.) When I tell the audience I saw a cartoon, it helps them paint a mental picture of what I am describing with words.

Describing a cartoon is an easy method for using cartoons without having them physically available or needing audio/visual equipment to show them. Showing a cartoon is a more powerful way to convey its humorous message. This is especially true in international audiences where the visual aspect takes on a greater significance. In a very small crowd I might hold up the cartoon or I might pass it around. In larger audiences, the cartoon should be projected (don’t forget to get permission from the copyright holder) so everyone can see it clearly. I like this method better anyway because I can control when it pops up on the screen. I want everyone to see the cartoon simultaneously so their laughter will be cumulative. Try to fill the frame of the visual with your cartoon or comic strip. You will create a greater impact.

The third way to use cartoons is to make them yourself. When I first started teaching this subject I could not take advantage of this method unless I hired an artist. Things are different now. There are a number of inexpensive computer software programs available which can be used, one of which is Corel Draw. This program has 25,000 pieces of electronic clip art, many of which are cartoons. I can make custom overhead cartoons for my speaking engagements. All I do is pick an applicable cartoon, add a custom caption for my audience.

The Problem With Using Humor In A Speech

You are a great speaker. It’s just that if you use humor incorrectly, that might screw everything up. We’ve all been told that humor is a powerful tool that can make a speech that much more enjoyable for our audiences. That makes us all want to use humor and to use it more. However, if you screw it up, you’ll have to stand around and watch your next speech go up in flames.

Why Humor Does Not Always Work Out For A Speaker

Why can’t we all be stand-up comedians? Actually, the reason that we can’t is because as speakers we have a different goal than a standup comedian does: they just want to entertain their audience, we want to communicate information and motivate our audience to take action.

The biggest problem that I see speakers having with humor is when they simply try too hard. This unfortunately becomes obvious all too early on in a speech. What we see happening is when a speaker tries to tell a joke or use humor that they’ve seen somebody else use and for some reason it just doesn’t work – it’s not funny and the audience doesn’t laugh.

The problem here is that the speaker is trying to use humor that was not created for them. Humor is very much like a custom piece of clothing. If clothes have not been designed for your body shape then you’ll look funny wearing them. The same thing goes for humor. If you try to use humor that wasn’t designed for either your delivery style or the type of speech that you are giving, then it’s just not going to work.

What To Do If You Are Not Naturally Funny

Which leads us to the heart of our discussion. What should you do if it turns out that you are not a naturally funny person? We all know that humor is a powerful tool for speakers to use and each of us would like to be able to make the most of this tool.

If it turns out that you are lacking whatever it is that makes some people funny then don’t despair! Instead, understand that you can still use humor in your speech – you are just going to have to be very careful how you go about doing it.

The simplest way for all of us to incorporate humor into our speeches no matter how funny we may (or may not) be is to tell stories. The best kind of stories to tell are stories about things that have happened to us. Ultimately your goal needs to be to get the audience to laugh at the situation that you found yourself in. It’s easy for an audience to relate to you and so it’s just a small step to getting them to laugh at your story.

What All Of This Means For You

As someone who is willing to get up there and give a speech, you know how powerful humor can be. However, that power comes with a steep price – blow it and your whole speech can fall apart.

Humor does not always work out for speakers who try to use it. There can be a lot of reasons for this includes a failed attempt to use a canned joke that was created for somebody else’s style of speaking. Speakers who are not naturally funny can solve this problem by telling stories about themselves in a way that makes the audience laugh at them.

Yes, humor is a powerful tool. However, as speakers we need to realize that humor is simply a tool that can make our next speech that much more powerful. Taking the time to craft humor that works with our speaking style and the type of speech that we’re giving is the key to delivering a speech that will not only make our audience laugh, but also will make them remember what we had to say.

What source do you use to get political news? Are you sure you are reading or watching an unbiased version of events? Recent polls suggest that most journalists tend to be liberal and thus are more likely to vote Democrats than Republicans. Depending on the individual or the network they work for, their private opinions can sometimes affect the quality of the news they broadcast.

It is a journalist’s job to bring the news to the public but it should be presented without being influenced by their personal opinion. They are obliged to tell the truth and remain independent from the event being covered. This is fine in theory but in practice how often are the news people or the publications or networks they represent impartial?

Some people believe that political news is always biased depending on the source of the information. For example certain individuals will only believe what they hear on Fox news and not CNN, while others prefer CNN. Some people believe that Fox leans to the right while others maintain it just provides the news in a format that suits their listeners. At the end of the day, it is a matter of education. You should try to obtain information from a variety of sources so that you can form your own educated opinion on current events. Political news will often be controversial. Good news never sold newspapers or increased ratings!

But the people reporting political news should let the facts prove the point. They shouldn’t be tempted to stretch the truth particularly if the reason for doing so is to improve ratings.
