Day Trading Advice: Identifying and Exiting Losers

The majority of traders are looking for entries with a very high probability of success. Web sites and book stores are loaded with day trading advice to fill this “need.” Some of it’s pretty good entry advice. A lot of it is average, which is actually not a good thing. But good or average, if they are leading you to believe that “If you can find better entries, you’d be making money.” Than this is poor day trading advice, it’s a lie and they are taking your money and they are taking you for a ride.

Well, it’s time to stop believing the lie. Stop paying for “sure thing” entry methods.

I write a market newsletter each day, giving my “game plan” for the next trading day. I’m as specific as possible including Support and Resistance levels that I will be buying and selling against, which provides you with great trade set ups nearly everyday.

I’ve been day trading futures for 27 years and I’ve developed a strategy that makes money consistently. I don’t promise overnight success, anyone who is really serious about wanting to learn day trading realizes that it’s not a get rich quick profession. Yes, my method does include great entries, but most losing traders have decent entry strategies. My experienced day trading advice doesn’t focus as much on entries as it does on exits…Offense doesn’t win this ballgame, defense does!

If you’re going to make it day trading the stock market, and actually be successful at it, you must understand why this is, and then you’ll program your reflexes to follow your knowledge.

Think of it this way…large corporations spend millions of dollars inventing boatloads of products that are worthless. But in the early stages of research and development, the company can’t tell which products will make money. If they take all their new products to market, and only a few sell, the few won’t offset the losers, and the company will go under.

Most new companies (about 95% by some estimates) fail. The same is true of traders, they want to be successful, but just don’t know how to go about it, which day trading advice should they believe, and who’s just trying to take their money.

But there is an upside to all of this, successful companies know a secret. They find a way to identify their losers in the early stages… and close the projects down quickly before losing a lot of money in the marketing process.As James Surowiecki puts it in his book, “The Wisdom of Crowds”

“…companies place huge bets on losers all the time. What makes a system successful is its ability to recognize losers and kill them quickly.”

The same is true of stock trading strategies. Experienced professional traders place bets on losers all the time, but they know how to identify losers and kill them quickly before much (if any) money is lost.

I close bad trades well before my hard stops are hit, but anyone can do that. But, you also have to recognize your losers early. Otherwise you’ll be killing your good trades along with the bad ones.

Every successful trader I’ve met has a way of getting out early on bad trades. If you are day trading support and resistance , I can teach you how I do it. You may be able to find a way to do it on your own, but it will probably take years. I’ve been trading for more than 27 years, and publishing my day trading advice on the internet since 1996.

No matter which route you take, identifying and exiting losers is the key to trading.

Often the myriad of career options available today can actually work to confuse or even create a sense of fear avoidance in people, causing them to ignore the need for a proper process of career exploration. The consequences of avoiding career exploration however is that people can, often years down the track, find themselves working in occupations which provide little or no job satisfaction.

When this occurs people often find it difficult to understand how and why their career journey has taken them to where they are. It’s easy to miss the sign posts on the road of career exploration, and in deciding not to take a path toward career satisfaction people can find themselves reaching a career deadend and needing a career change.

Taking a career advice test, or assessment while useful at any stage of the career exploration process can be particularly beneficial in those early stages of career exploration process in order to help people actively think about the type of jobs they may be interested in. This may sound simple, and in some respects it is, however you would be surprised how many people work unhappily in a job or career for many years without every having really thought about the types of careers that may be best suited to them.

Career advice tests are often used by career counsellors because although they are unlikely to be the only answer in finding your ideal career, they are often an excellent starting point to help flesh out ideas and provide options that can be narrowed in on and explored in greater detail. From a career counsellors perspective a career advice test can provide a client with an opportunity to explore career interests in a well structured and productive manner.

One cautionary word before you rush out and take a career advice test, or assessment however. While any process that gets people to actively think and explore themselves and career options can be a good thing from a career counselling perspective, it’s important to recognize that many career advice tests or quizzes on the internet are not designed to be valid or reliable tests, but rather just fun tools to explore interests or career options. If such career quizzes are taken with this understanding and with this knowledge then there is no harm in taking a career quiz for a bit of fun, however unfortunately many of these test purport to be something they are not and this can have negative consequences. Although no career advice test is likely to provide “the answer” (as there is never just one answer), there are certainly some career advice tests that are better than others.

One of the ways people can spot a good quality career advice test from an unreliable quiz is to see if the test developer is prepared to make their research data available. Two of the better tests available on the internet that do always for uses to review their research reliability and validity data are the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs career advice test. These are very popular tests and importantly their validity and reliability data is freely available on the internet and can be access using a quick search engine search. Readers will find that, unlike the career quizzes, these better quality career advice tests are not free but when one considers the importance of making good career choice then perhaps spending a small amount of money on a proper career advice test is a wise more!

Career Advice For Children Or Teenagers

In today’s society getting the right careers advice for children / kids and teenagers, is highly recommended. Many of the most successful adults today were fortunate enough to have been given some form of careers advice while they were still young. This gave them an advantage over many of their peers as they already knew and had a direction to head in when they had finished their secondary level of education.

When we are young we all dream of:

Becoming a scientist
Becoming a farmer
Working with the medical services
Working with the fire services
Working with the police services
Becoming a professional sports person
Becoming an architect
Becoming an astronaut
Owning a business
Becoming an actor

or one of the many other types of work that are available.

However, as we all know, there are hundreds, thousands if not millions of distractions that are available to take our attention away from the path that will lead us to that dream job or career that we always wanted.

Very often life turns out very differently from what we had originally expected and we end up accepting jobs or careers that are very distant from what we actually wanted to do when we became adults.

From an early age children should be encouraged to think about the following:

What do they enjoy doing?
What do they want to do when they are older?
Do they understand what their parents / carers do?
Do they understand how different jobs make up the society that they live in?
The importance of being a positive and constructive member of society.
The results of not being a positive and constructive member of society.
Enjoying childhood and teenage years while still remembering that they will one day become an adult.

Many people may think that these issues are too difficult for some children / kids to cope with. That is true. However, many children do have the mental capacity to identify with things that affect them but are not necessarily in front of them. Adults should encourage the children in their charge to think at the level most suited to that child. Careers advice for children can begin at any age. For example if a child shows an interest in art for example, it may be a good idea to take the child to an art gallery which could broaden the child’s thinking.

Or if a child shows interest in design, it might be possible to obtain some design equipment for them, or take them to a place where design is done at a professional level. They could even be taken to a trade or fashion show so they could see the end results of the design process.

Another important thing to remember:

Is the child or teenager naturally good at something?

This is often a major factor that is widely overlooked by parents and carers.

For example many children / kids and teenagers today want to be involved in the music industry. Adults usually think that this is a stage that the child or teenager will grow out of. However we also forget that it is usually ourselves that encourage them to learn musical instruments when they are young and we become upset or annoyed when they don’t pursue or wish to continue their musical education.

What could help in this kind of situation is to provide the necessary careers advice for children and teenagers about this and help them learn what is REALLY involved in becoming a professional musician. Once they have realised that it is not as easy as TV leads us to believe, they will either become serious about that intention or they will rethink their plans.

The most important thing to remember is to continually encourage the child to be successful at whatever they eventually choose to do. This will give them the self confidence necessary to achieve the best they can at their chosen career or profession.

Also remember that careers advice for children and teenagers could involve discussing further education. This is often looked at as a last resort for a youth who has not decided what s/he wants to do, when it is not. Further education can often provide the required foundation for youths that DO know what they want to do, and also for youths that Don’t. Either way it is an excellent subject to discuss with them.

Adults sometimes overburden children and teenagers with talk about ‘the future’. This could eventually have a negative effect on the childs’ or teenagers’ choice when choosing what to do.

Many people often have failed job or career dreams that they knowingly or unknowingly ‘dump’ onto youths. Adults often say things like

‘I wanted to be a……… but……… wouldn’t let me’
‘If I had been offered the chances that you have I’d be a……… by now’
‘If I hadn’t had children, I could have been a……… by now’.
‘There weren’t any opportunities when I was your age’
‘If I’d known what I know now I’d have become a………’

This MUST be avoided. Remember children and teenagers are very impressionable and can detect when there is resentment in what someone is saying. This could lead them to not want to talk about careers and jobs as they may think it upsets the adult.

A final note: Always be positive and constructive when providing careers advice for children / kids and teenagers. It is a good thing to point out what could happen if they don’t do well at school, college, university, or don’t make good career choices, however don’t let this be the main topic or subject of your discussions.

They must be taught that receiving careers advice is a good thing and providing they listen and carefully consider what is being advised, they will have a better chance of leading a happier, more fulfilling, enjoyable and worthwhile life. Remember it is their life, NOT yours.

Only 55 percent of workers earning more than $50,000, and 45 percent of those earning less than $15,000 per year say they are satisfied with their jobs, according to a survey by The Conference Board.

What’s going on here? This is serious stuff. Those findings ought to set off alarm bells with employers and employees alike.

Job Tip: It’s a proven fact that workers who enjoy their jobs are more productive and successful; therefore, for their employers’ bottom lines benefit. At the same time, employees who find satisfaction in their work earn more, and enjoy better health, both mental and physical.

Career Advice: How do you feel about your job? If you are among the huge number of those who are “unsatisfied” with the path of your career, it’s time to get cracking with an action plan to improve your life on the job. Left uncorrected such a state of mind slowly but surely breeds frustration and ennui, which in turn sap your strength and abilities to build a successful career.

Rate Your Job Satisfaction

The first step is to take inventory of your career goals and where you stand in reaching them. Rate each of the following points on a scale of one to ten. The higher the number the more satisfied you are.

1. The total of your compensation: your paycheck, your benefits including health insurance, savings and retirement and vacation.

2. Your balance between work and time-off.

3. Your workload.

4. Your chances for advancement.

5. Your job itself.

6. Your boss relationships.

7. Your work environment.

Take the total of your ratings and divide the number by seven. Still on the scale of one to ten, how satisfied are you with your career path?

Now, move to step three by answering these questions:

1. What changes can make to raise your satisfaction level to the seven to eight range in your present job?

2. Is the shortfall in your satisfaction score due to external forces that surround your job?

3. Is your dissatisfaction of your own making?

Are You At Fault?

Career Advice: If the problems are of your own making, you must know that they will follow you wherever you go until you make corrections in your own thinking.

If you are not convinced that you can achieve a seven or eight score on your present job it’s time to consider looking elsewhere for career success.

Whatever, you do, if you are not reasonably well satisfied with your life at work take action this day.

Remember the frog. Put him in a pot of cool water and set it over a flame. The frog will frolic about happily as the water goes from cool to warm. He will continue to adapt, swimming about contentedly, even as the water begins to simmer. It is not until the water reaches the boiling point that the frog finally recognizes he is in serious trouble and tries to get out. But by that time, his strength has been sapped and it is too late.

Face the fact, you are the master of your own destiny. The reading on your satisfaction scale is the result of your own efforts.

New Book Offers Amazing Advice on Building an Amazing Career

From the first page of “Building an Amazing Career,” I was hooked because I fully knew where author Jodene Hager was coming from when she began with her optimistic words:

In school, the future was looking so bright. The doors would swing open, the clients would come running, and I would finally reach a stage of having enough in my life. My teachers had said something about how important networking was, but I didn’t quite get what that really meant. I couldn’t wait to graduate and get my license to practice.

As I read on, I realized that I felt a lot like Jodene. Although she is a massage therapist and I’m a writer, editor, and book reviewer, I started out as an English major thinking a job would just be available to me, and as great as my education was in terms of teaching me about writing and literature, it did not prepare me for the job market or even knowing what to do with my degree. After years of teaching, and ups and downs in the job market, including jobs that had nothing to do with my degree, I eventually became self-employed and found myself using my degree to do what I was most talented and qualified to do. Like Jodene, I felt in some ways that my education had failed me in terms of how to build a career or business and things would have been easier if someone had just taken the time to talk to me or visit my class and share information. Similarly, and early in her career, Jodene realized there needed to be support groups for healthcare professionals, so she promised herself that once she had the experience she needed, she would build them.

My point is that, no matter whether you’re in healthcare or not, this book is full of information that will benefit you in building an amazing career and Jodene’s personal stories will resonate with you while giving you tips to improve your situation. In fact, I’m sure it’s no accident that “Building an Amazing Career” wasn’t titled “Building an Amazing Massage Therapist Career” because its information is largely applicable to every career. Just one vital across-all-professions point Jodene makes is about the importance of networking with people outside of your profession. Reading this book really made me understand what it takes to be a chiropractor or massage therapist, and I can only benefit from that understanding and apply her advice-about networking, building a business, hiring and firing employees, or being self-employed-to my own situation as a self-employed writer who continually contracts and networks with others in the publishing world.

If Jodene had chosen another name for this book, it might have been “Everything They Failed to Teach You in School about Having a Career.” Whether it’s about interviewing for a job or interviewing employees, learning how to network with others in your field or other professions (Jodene knows “networking” can seem scary, but also that it’s vital for success), giving back to the community or profession through creating fundraisers, talking to students who plan to make your current profession their future one, or sharing both horror stories and funny anecdotes about what actually happens day-to-day in the healthcare world, Jodene has excellent advice that can be applied to almost every business and employee situation. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Building an Amazing Career” became required reading for nurses, doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, and even all businesspeople. The book encompasses essential information for everyone in business-and we’re all in business-whether as an employee, employer, or a self-employed individual.

A lot of what Jodene advocates may surprise you, such as why you should not advertise, why you need to educate your patients about your work, and Jodene’s request that if she left anything out of the book, you contact her to share stories for future editions of this book and others. I was struck throughout by her honesty and her enthusiasm for her work and her earnest efforts to help her fellow health care practitioners.

Networking examples may be the strongest part of this powerful book, and Jodene has proven herself a fantastic networker as evidenced by all her stories and all the people (health care professionals and patients) who enthusiastically gave her endorsements. From the time she made hundreds of dollars a week in her pet sitting business, starting at age twelve, to the day she found the courage to write a book and share what she has learned, she has obviously been a go-getter, a bundle of positive energy, and a fountain of information to all those who know her. She has also clearly accomplished what she promised early in her career to do-build support groups for health care practitioners. Jodene has gone from being a successful businesswoman herself to someone who assists and even creates organizations, networks with and brings together her fellow professionals, educates students, and still manages to find time to do what she loves-massage therapy-despite experiencing injuries.

I don’t think anyone who plans to go into massage therapy or business in general could have a better friend or mentor than Jodene Hager, and I can’t imagine any readers will come away from “Building an Amazing Career” without thinking they got a real steal for just the price of a book considering all the information inside it. Kudos, Jodene! Keep inspiring!

Failures or shortfalls in careers do not usually result from the lack of education and training. The number one reason for such disappointments is most often not knowing “how to work”.

Said another way, the difference between winners and losers in the world of work is that achievers know how to translate their “know-what-to-do” skills into “how-to-get- things-done” strategies and actions.

People who can carry out the procedural functions associated with a job are a dime a dozen. But those who can manage people and resources to complete a successful project are in the minority.

CAREER TIP: COMMON SENSE IS THE KEY

Without common sense, the careerist is severely handicapped in driving ideas from incubation to results. He may have brilliant ideas, but unless he can move them through the organization to achieve tangible results, those ideas will die without serving a useful purpose for anyone.

Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, father of the U.S. nuclear navy, put it this way: “What it takes to do a job will not be learned from management courses. It is principally a matter of experience, the proper attitude and common sense–none of which can be taught in a classroom.”

In his groundbreaking book EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, Daniel Goleman posits: “I would argue the difference (between high achievers and also-rans) is quite often in the abilities called emotional intelligence, which includes self-control, zeal and persistence, and the ability to motivate oneself.”

That equates to common sense in my experience.

Common sense is not very common. This rare quality is much easier to see in hindsight. Some people are lucky. They seem to have been born with common sense. But most have to work to learn its rules. Alarming News and Advice For Unapologetic Safety

It is not unusual to hear alarming news and disturbing stories these days. Society can be most predictable in its instability and unfortunate leanings toward criticism, judgments and, sadly, unnecessary violence. A well known sports writer was recently quoted as saying, “The greatest human instinct may be censorship.” Unfortunately, in many forms, that could very well be true.

A religious group in Canton, North Carolina has publicized their plans for a Halloween-night book burning. Are they going to set fire to pornography, racy selections or text wrought with profanity? No. Rather, they intend to burn bibles (oh, only the NON-King James version scriptures), literature by Christian authors and assorted Christian music. Apparently the Baptist church congregation and their head pastor deem all these things an affront to humanity, as well as to their rather narrow definition of God.

In Westchester, New York, one of the school districts meted out very minor punishment to a teen girl who hurled degrading and threatening racial slurs at a fellow student. Further escalating the interracial disturbance, the girl’s older brother and an entourage of friends soon after lit a burning cross on the victimized student’s front lawn.

The 21-year old brother spent some months in jail for the cross burning antics and is now back in prison for making alleged internet threats against our President. Thank goodness for the Secret Service and that nice, tall fence around the White House; otherwise this lawless group would likely have a tall cross ablaze on the presidential landscape, too.

You may be wondering; what is wrong with people? Certainly we have every right to ask; why do so many folks foster this relentless need to act out against and negatively censor anyone they don’t personally approve of? And we need to consider; what do we do in the event that someone disapproves of us with threatening intent?

While we should all hope that such ridiculous and unevolved behavior would never be directed toward us, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility (especially considering that it appears such a popular pastime).

Carrying a personal alarm can help alert others if you are in danger when outside your home. Inside our houses, security devices such as alarms, motion detectors and remote cellular monitoring equipment helps to keep us as safe as possible.

No one wants to incite paranoia or develop undue cynicism toward humanity, but at the same time we need to look out for ourselves, for our families, and exercise a reasonable degree of protective suspicion with relative caution. There is a lot of truth to the old adage, ‘Better safe than sorry.’
