Marvel Comic Books – A Reflection of Culture

Marvel Comic Books – A Reflection of Culture

Superheroes have always been popular among teenagers. Paper comic books were atop this wave of popularity before television shows, movies, or Internet threads about these superheroes were even available. Comic book fans revered these paperbacks as more than just stories. The comics actually delved into social, societal, and political thresholds, reflecting the state of the times they were released. Ever since first hitting the market, Marvel comic books have enjoyed a position at the top comic world. And, Marvel continues to be the biggest publisher of comics today.

Marvel’s history goes as far back as October 1939 when Martin Goodman commissioned Lloyd Jacquet’s company to publish the first comic book for Marvel. Incidentally, the book was entitled Marvel Comics #1. Marvel sold more than 80,000 copies of its inaugural issue. Seeing the success of its experiment with comics, especially the popularity of its first superhero Human Torch, Marvel introduced its second superhero-Captain America-in 1941.

World War II marked the end of what became known as the “Golden Age” of comic books. Marvel Comics responded to a precipitous decline in the popularity of superhero books, featuring characters such as Captain America, by introducing a new range of humorous books based around characters such as Super Rabbit.

However, the start of Vietnam War revived interest in comic superheroes. This forced Marvel into designing four new superheroes that teamed up as “The Fantastic Four” in the eponymous Marvel comic books. Marvel followed it up with other characters such as X-Men, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Hulk, and the immortalized Spider-Man. These characters are etched into the minds of generations of teenagers and continue to form the basis of several Hollywood blockbusters.

Marvel comics were educational as well as entertaining. Look at them closely and you should notice how they incorporated important issues into their story lines. Drug abuse is a good example of this. Because of this technique, many educators promoted these comics for student use.

Collectors pay a huge price for old comics, even millions of dollars for the rare issues in pristine condition. Ask your grandparents and parents if they have a fortune tucked in a drawer that contains the nostalgic stuff from their childhood. Even the government recognizes the immense influence of superhero comics on pop culture. In 2007, commemorative stamps featuring superhero comic characters were released.

What comprises children’s literature has become a subject of hot debate amongst today’s literary and pedagogical scholars. Put broadly, the umbrella term “children’s literature” covers all the books that are written about children and are read by children. Many a time, the definition of children’s literature is determined by the teachers, literary scholars from academic and pedagogical institutions, librarians and the various book awards committees.

Many standard authorities on the subject of children’s books believe that books can, alternatively, be classified on the basis of some basic formats namely, picture books, illustrated books, lesson books, easy to read books and graphic novels.

Most children’s books are written specially for children readership, including the world famous timeless classic novel: “Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Conversely, many works originally composed for children are being read and enjoyed by teenage and elders. For instance, many works of prolific writers like R.K.Narayan, Ruskin Bond, Mark Haddon and Phillip Pullman though originally meant for children are equally enjoyed by the elders. These works include R.K Narayan’s “Swami and Friends”, Ruskin Bond’s “The Blue Umbrella”, Mark Haddon’s “The curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” and Phillip Pullman’s “The Amber Spyglass”.

Recently, J.K Rowling’s sensational books forming the Harry Potter series have received considerable recognition from all parts of the world. The Harry Potter books have been widely appreciated for sparking an interest in reading amongst children at a time when children were thought to be giving up books for the pleasure of watching television playing computer and video games.

A number of online book portals have come up which provide a number of children’s books. These online book portals have scores of children’s books for pre-school and school-going children. These stores provide relevant information on the childrens books. Parents and teachers will find them immensely helpful as they give a chance to the children to select books. Five Tips To Find Quality Children’s Books

Five Tips To Find Quality Children’s Books

When you want to buy childrens books, it’s important to take a few things into consideration. You want your child to be able to follow and understand the story you’re reading depending on her age. You want them to be excited about reading a children story book. And you want them to have learned something when the story is finished. Here is a guide for how to buy the best fiction childrens books for your little one.

1. Cover: You know the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but sometimes you have to. If the illustrations on the cover of the book are unattractive or basic, and look like not much time was spent on them, that’s probably the case for the story too. Choose a book with a quality cover illustration and you won’t be disappointed when you read the story.

2. First Lines: When you open a book, read the first page to yourself. This is a good indicator of how the rest of the story reads. If it catches your attention, it is a good children story book. If you don’t care about what happens, and wonder if your child will find it boring, you should probably put it down.

3. Plot: If time permits, read more than the first page. Try to gauge the plot of the children story book. You should want to finish the story, no matter the length. When your attention is captured, your child’s attention will be captured.

4. Sequels: Usually a good children story book will have a sequel or other stories published by the same author or childrens book publishers. This shows that the author is dedicated to his craft, and the childrens book publishers are serious enough to print more than one story.

5. No Base Humor: Potty humor isn’t funny and it isn’t educational. If there’s going to be humor in your fiction childrens books it should be witty or ironic instead. Kids can tell when something is base. They’re much more likely to reread a story with quality jokes and plot twists than one that gets laughs from bodily functions. These books don’t have morals or lessons, and that’s why they don’t stand the test of time.

These five tips should help you when you choose fiction childrens books. Children are smart. They realize things that adults forget after growing up. That means that they can tell quality just as easily as you can. So if you think something is good, chances are they will too. And if you think something is bad, they won’t have a doubt about it. After your child reads fiction childrens books she should be affected by it – and with these tips the effects will all be good.

Writing Books for Children – Submissions to Contract to Book Promotion to Writing Career

Writing Books for Children – Submissions to Contract to Book Promotion to Writing Career

The foundation of writing books for children, or any genre for that matter, is to learn the craft of writing. In regard to being a children’s author you will need to learn the specific rules and tricks to create appropriate stories with age-appropriate words and story lines.

Once you have taken the time to hone your craft and have critiqued, revised, and edited your manuscript to a polished state, it’s on to the next phases of the traditional writing books for children writing path: submissions, promotion, and a writing career.

1. Writing Books for Children: Submissions

Before you think about submitting your work anywhere, be sure you’ve completed the necessary steps to learn the craft of writing. You’re manuscript needs to be as polished as you can possibly get it.

Submissions can fall into two categories: those to publishers and those to agents. In regard to submitting to agents, in a webinar presented by Writer’s Digest, agent Mary Kole advised to “research agents.” This means to find out what type of agent they are in regard to the genre they work with and the agent platform they provide: do they coddle their authors, do they crack the whip, are they aggressive, passive, involved, or complacent. Know what you’re getting into before querying an agent, and especially before signing a contract.

To learn about agents, you can visit AgentQuery.com

The same advice works for submitting to publishers also; research publishers before submitting to them. Know which genres of children’s books they handle and the type of story lines they’re looking for.

Whether submitting to a publisher or an agent, always follow the guidelines and always personalize the query. There may be times the guidelines do not provide the name of the editor to send the query to, but if you can find that information, use it.

According to Mary Kole, it’s also important to know how to pitch your story. This entails finding the story’s hook. Agents and publishers also want to know what the book’s selling points will be and what successful books it’s similar to. In addition, they will expect to be told what your marketing strategy will be. It’s a good idea to create an online presence and platform before you begin submissions; let the agents and publishers know you will actively market your book.

Along with the story’s hook, you need to convey: who your main character is and what he/she is about; the action that drives the story; the main character’s obstacle, and if the main character doesn’t overcome the obstacle, what’s at stake.

Ms. Kole recommends reading “the back of published books” to see how they briefly and effectively convey the essence of the story. This will give you an idea of how to create your own synopsis.

When querying, keep your pitch short and professional, and keep your bio brief and relevant. You will need to grab the editor or agent and make them want to read your manuscript.

Here are four tools you can use to help find a publisher or agent:

1. Writers Market: Where and How to Sell What You Write
2. Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market: Over 700 listings for book publisher’s, magazines, agents, art reps, and more
3. Guide to Literary Agents: Where and How to Find the Right Agents to Represent Your Work
4. WritersMarket.com: Online resource to help you sell what you write

2. Writing Books for Children: The Book Contract

If you do your homework, your manuscript will eventually find a home. Don’t let initial rejections, if you receive them, deter you. A published writer may not be the best writer, but she is definitely a writer who perseveres.

Read your contract carefully, if you don’t understand something, ask for an explanation.

After you sign a contract, you’ll be ‘put in queue’ and at some point begin editing with the publisher’s editor. From start to actual release, the publishing process can take one to two years.

3. Writing Books for Children: Book Promotion

A couple of months prior to your book’s release, you should begin promotion to help with book sales. This will involve creating an author website and platform – your will need to create visibility for you and your book.

After your book’s release, you will want to take part in virtual book tours, do blogtalk radio guest spots, school visits, and all the other standard book promotion strategies. You can take this on yourself, or you can hire a book promotion service or publicist.

4. Writing Books for Children: A Writing Career

Now, you’ve got your book and you’re promoting it like crazy (this is an ongoing process). The next and final step is to repeat the process. You don’t want to be a one-hit wonder, so hopefully you’ve been writing other stories. If not, get started now. On average, an author writes a book every one to two years.

Along with keeping your writing books for children momentum up, having published books opens other writing opportunities, such as speaking engagements, conducting workshops and/or teleseminars, and coaching. There are a number of marketers who say your ‘book’ is your business card or your calling card; it conveys what you’re capable of and establishes you as an expert in your field or niche. Take advantage of these additional avenues of visibility and income.

Favourite Books From My Childhood

Favourite Books From My Childhood

My first memories of reading were when I was at school. The school used a series called Janet and John to teach us to read. Very quickly we progressed to other books including the popular Ladybird books.

At home we had beautifully illustrated copies of the European fairy tales of Hans Anderson and the Grimm brothers. I was certainly one of Enid Blyton’s biggest fans. To be given a collection of her books at the start of the summer holidays was a treat. My favourite series by her were Mallory Towers, The Naughtiest Girl and The Famous Five. My father had a collection of Just William books, by Richmal Compton, which I read many times over. Another favourite school boy hero was Jennings.

Most of the books I read came from our local library. A number of North American authors were popular such as L M Alcott who wrote Little Women, Susan Coolidge the author of What Katy Did and Lucy Montgomery, the Canadian writer of Anne of Green Gables.

As I grew older career books became a fascination for me. The Bodley Head series which included Air Hostess Ann, June Grey Fashion Student and Valerie Fashion Model and the Sue Barton nursing series gave me an insight into independence and life after school.

Agatha Christie’s detective books were ingenious murder mysteries which never failed to intrigue me.

Finally I embarked on reading classics. Wind in the Willows with its quirky animal characters and Alice in Wonderland a story about a fantasy world. I loved the Yorkshire based Secret Garden and the haunting story of Jane Eyre. Over time I read all the Jane Austen and Bronte sisters’ romantic novels.

Life without books as a child would certainly have been much less colourful, a simple pleasure which gave me immeasurable satisfaction.

Affirmations get a bad rap by many in the areas of personal growth and development, and at the same time by others are touted as the magic to changing your life. There are those who tell you that using affirmations is THE way to changing your thinking thus changing your life, and others who say they are a useless waste of time.

Here I will attempt to clarify and set straight the place and value of affirmations in your self improvement efforts to change and grow in your life. The topic of affirmations fits into what I call “A fine line.” There is a fine line between going too far one way or the other. To get the value from something you must find the “fine line” place in the middle, too far one way or the other, and you loose it. And so it is with affirmations.

First, some of the misconception comes from people grasping for the quick fix. We all know how we can easily read into something what we want. And that what most people are looking for is the quickest, easiest way to make changes in their life, which does really not exist.

All related factors must be addressed to realize real results. Affirmations do play a role in your overall self development and growth but are certainly not the only tool that must be used to get the results you want. Affirmations alone will not bring about the major change in life some believe, on the other hand they are not totally worthless as many others make them out to be.

Much of what is taught in the personal growth and development field is just part of the story. Where someone has focused on one or even a few aspects of what is involved and highlighting just those parts, which gives the impression that, that is all there is. Yes, in short change it is simple, but there are many ‘between the lines’ aspects that come into play, and one of these is affirmations.

It’s easy to allow ourselves to get consumed with one aspect of life development when our focus is on just one element, which is the case with many books and trainings. It is good to study and focus on one aspect if this is something specifically you feel you need to learn and user, but don’t forget about the whole picture.

Now those who say that just using affirmations will fix your life, seem to ‘forget’ about the aspects of action, among other things, which we can’t escape as we are in this physical reality. Yes, your thoughts and your feelings play a crucial role in how you manage and develop your life, but that’s not all. You must take appropriate actions, it’s your job, your design here in this physical reality we enjoy. If we weren’t suppose to be involved physically why are we here?

And, those who say affirmations are worthless are missing out on a powerful tool that has some purpose when one is working on their thinking. And, yes, your thinking is absolutely critical as everything revolves around it. I think why some people look down on the use of affirmations comes from their reaction to others who say that affirmations are all you need. But this all or nothing reaction does not serve anyone well.

Here are some ways that affirmations are useful in your self improvement work:

* Affirmations help set your tone. Your overall attitude and feeling will affect what you think about. It affects how you act and interact with others. It virtually colors your day. Using affirmations will help direct your daily tone.

* Affirmations help keep your thinking positive – on what you want and away from what you don’t want. If affirmations serve no other purpose for you than this, it makes them well worth using, if all you do is use affirmations to replace unwanted thinking with desirable thinking you have won big. A critical part of change is to learn to stop focusing on what you don’t want and rather focus on what you do want.

* Affirmations help build mental discipline. As you learn affirmations and actually use them regularly, you are training your mind to a different way of thinking on a daily basis. You are learning how you can change your thought and how to keep it as you want. You are learning to take command of your thinking by directing it rather than allowing everything to be automatic.

* Affirmations help evolve your thinking in the direction you want. As you develop affirmations for yourself, you are thinking about and expanding your thinking in the areas that you want to play a greater role in your life. The more you work with developing affirmative and supportive statements, the more you will discover what is possible.

Now, maybe if your thinking is already 100% supportive of what you want in life, where you are going, and you never slip into any thought of doubt, worry and what you don’t like, you don’t need affirmations. Actually if this is the case, you have already assimilated the affirmation like thought into your everyday thinking. Your conscious mind is already always on the positive, supportive congruent thoughts of your ideal life as it is freely unfolding. For anyone else, affirmations can be a useful tool.

Affirmations are a wonderful tool for effecting your thinking, which is very important in your growth and development, as long as you don’t get stuck thinking that this is all you need to do. It takes more than just your thoughts to see results, but developing your thinking is key to your knowing the right actions to take, when and how to get the results you want.
