How to Choose the Right Pet Ramp Or Stairs

How to Choose the Right Pet Ramp Or Stairs

First of all, veterinarians have seen increasing problems in older pets, such as back problems, arthritic joints and muscle degeneration. Most daily routines of normally active pets involve jumping or climbing to lay on a bed, get in or out of a car, sit in a favorite chair, and so on. All too often, pets can experience pain as a first sign, and can begin to shy away from normal routines. They can become afraid of new experiences and their personalities can begin to change based on fear of doing something that could hurt.

On the other side, the pet parent is now forced to constantly lift and carry their best friend, avoiding any further pain or discomfort by putting themselves at risk. Many larger breed dogs can weigh more than half as much as their pet parents, which really sets the stage for potentially harmful results.

For a reasonable amount of money, potential pain, harm and injury to both pet and person can be avoided! The simple use of a pet ramp and pet steps or stairs can significantly reduce the risk of injury, help your loved pet regain their sense of independence, and can enhance the happiness between pet and parent.

Pets steps or stairs are the perfect choice when a somewhat permanent need must be addressed, such as when your doggie sleeps at the foot of your bed each night, but is having a hard time getting up or down. Choose steps that are not too steep, with large enough footing to make stepping up or down easy for your pet. Choose pet steps or stairs that are approximately the right height for your bed, chair or other pet spot, and choose a model that fits into the design and color of the room it will be in.

Pet ramps are generally used where the need is more portable. Entering and exiting cars or trucks is a great time to use a pet ramp. Pet ramps can make it easier to get your pet on a grooming table, in or out of your boat, or maneuvering around while on vacation. Use a pet ramp to go to the vet, on a camping trip, or just about anywhere else that your pet might need a change in height to live as normally as possible.

Many pet parents are realizing that incorporating pet ramps and pet steps or stairs into their younger pet’s life is a great idea. Younger pets are less likely to develop muscle or joint problems from repetitive impact when they’re older, if they have to spend less time making awkward or difficult jumps as part of their everyday routine. This is a great way to help keep your pet healthy and safe around your home.

Smaller pets, such as toy breed dogs, can be especially vulnerable. The world is a much larger place for them, and even a small step off a couch can feel like we would if we jumped off the roof of our house – a little scary and wishing we had a ramp!

When choosing a pet ramp, make sure it is strong enough and long enough. Consider the weight of your pet, and make sure the pet ramp can safely hold the weight. Consider the distance of the most common uses for your ramp, such as getting in and out of your vehicle. Take a tape measure or something solid and measurable, such as a broom handle, and measure the distance between several inches inside your car door to the ground, at a safe and sloping angle that your pet could walk down. Make sure the ramp is long enough to work at this “safe length”.

Ramps need to go with you, so two other important features that most pet parents appreciate are lower weight and the ability to fold up. Lower weight makes carrying and setting the ramp up a much easier task. If your ramp folds, it takes up less room in vehicle or home, and will telescope out or unfold to fit your needs. Lastly, make sure it has a non-slip surface to make it easier for your pet.

So there you have it. Purchasing a pet ramp as well as pet steps or pet stairs can give an older pet more independence and will allow you to enjoy the things you always did when your pet was younger. You can go to places that you had given up on and most of all you’ve given your pet a much better quality of life. Younger pets can greatly benefit by avoiding hard jumps and falls. Perhaps best of all, you can avoid personal injury to yourself, without guilt, while you enhance the bond between you and your pet!

The Best Car Deals – Low Finance Rates Vs Rebates – Which Should You Choose?

The Best Car Deals – Low Finance Rates Vs Rebates – Which Should You Choose?

How To Get The Best Car Deals:

Quick tips that will help you at the car dealer:

How to understand Rebates and low financing offers:

Vehicle MSRP: Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price – This price is always negotiable – don’t ever agree to pay MSRP

Exception: Some vehicles that might be “hard to find” or “limited in production” might be sold by the dealers at MSRP or, sometimes higher. This is usually called Market Adjustment.

Manufacturers Rebates: This is your money and has nothing to do with discounts given by the dealership. This money is given to you directly from the factory. Never let the rebate be used as a negotiation tool by the dealer. Any discount or negotiation from the dealer should be separate of any rebates offered.

Low finance rates: 0.00% 1.00% 1.9% etc… These are called Sub-vented rates, they too are offered by the factory and not the dealership. Do not allow a “low” finance rate to be used as part of a negotiation by the dealer. These rates are granted over and above any discounts, rebates, etc.

Exceptions: There are several exceptions to Sub-vented finance rates, but here are two that you really should be aware of:

1. Not all people qualify for these rates. So, if you suspect that you might have some issue that will cause you not to qualify, there is nothing wrong with expressing to the dealer that the low finance rate is something you are interested in, and you would like to apply first, before going through the long, timely steps of deal negotiation. Many dealerships will view this as unusual; however, any “good” dealer will be happy to let you submit an application first if you insist. Why is this important? As we always say, knowledge and preparation are the keys to not overpaying at a dealership. What happens if your entire deal is worked, negotiated and finalized with the dealer? Then you head over to the finance office to finalize the finance terms and payments… You expected to pay 0.00% interest, then at the last second you are told: “Sorry” because you don’t qualify… NOT GOOD THE WHOLE DEAL CHANGES.

2. Rebates and “low” finance rates can not always be combined. Some factories allow it some times, however there is no rule; you must do your homework first. For instance, Chrysler offers manufacturers rebates on most their vehicles, plus they offer low finance rates on most vehicles as well. Though, you the customer must decide which offer you want, you can’t have both. Although, sometimes Chrysler will run special offers that allow you to “combine” both the financing and rebate offers at once. But be careful, dealers won’t always tell you that these offers are available, if you are unaware and you agree to pay higher finance rates, you are stuck.

Commonly Asked Question: Which is the right choice, Rebate or Low Financing?

This is an interesting question asked by many customers, the answer is simple yet many people have no idea.

Remember this rule: You should do what’s best for you, do not ever inquire with a person, dealer, or anyone else that has any other motive than what’s best for you.

What that means is this: When you ask a dealership which makes more sense, the dealer will likely tell you: “Take the rebate – not the low interest rate.”

The reasoning behind this answer is, if you take the rebate you are actually paying “less” for the vehicle than if you elected the low interest rate. So, being that the vehicle price is the most important issue, you should always take the rebate. Is this correct or incorrect?

Rule: Don’t be concerned what the dealer is making or loosing, it’s not relevant to what’s best for you.

Does the dealership stand to gain more if you chose the rebate vs. the low finance rate? The answer to that question is yes, the dealership does stand to gain more. They receive a little more in “reserve money” from the lender if you chose conventional finance rates. The fact is however; that this point is completely irrelevant. Who cares what the dealership is making? Why is that important anyway? Is there some rule that says a dealership is not entitled to make profit? The only person who is doing something wrong in this scenario is you. You’re asking the wrong party for information. If the complete and honest answer might cause the dealer to make less, chances are more than likely the answers will be carefully weighed to fall on their side.

Remember: Your concern is getting the best deal for you, don’t waist time caring about what the dealership makes. Prepare yourself by considering all the facts. Do not make the common errors of all the people we constantly heart about who over pay all the time.

Fact: People who think that dealerships are loosing money on them are usually the ones who pay the most!

Note: Please understand the purpose of this and every other post we write is NOT to condemn dealerships for making profit. Why should a dealer not be entitled to profit? What right do we have to ask them to lose money? Would you ever go to a restaurant and tell them that you insist they sell you dinner and lose money? It’s a stretch, but equally as ridiculous.

The purpose of this post is to assist fair people in getting the best deal for themselves. Protecting people from being “ripped off” by a deceptive dealership is our motivation. We don’t claim that all dealers are unfair or “rip off artists”, in fact we are aware that most dealers are honest and forthcoming. Although, everyone is in business to make a profit and the topics written about within these posts are for the purpose of assisting “fair” consumers achieve “fair” and honest deals. Why do we keep mentioning “fair”. Because equal to us having no concern about a cheating dealership, we also have no concern about the “unfair” consumers who want the good dealers to close down their business and lose money.

“A GOOD DEAL IS WHEN BOTH PARTIES ARE SATISFIED”

As we have mentioned so many times; price is not always the most important issue.

The following is the one and only correct answer to the Rebate vs. low rate debate:

With any issue that causes you to make a decision there are always certain facts in place, those facts make up the “pros and cons”. With any decision we make, we weight the pros and cons and ultimately are lead to a decision. Then of course, we hope that decision was the right one.

Remember this rule: There is always a point where the two lines will cross, that point is where you will find the correct answer.

This means; there are variables that create change in every deal. For example: It may be a better deal for me to take the rebate, while it is a better deal for you to take the low financing rates. Let’s explain:

You might be financing $30,000 and your finance term is 60 months. The Factory is offering a $3000 manufacturers rebate or 0.00% for the 60 month finance term. Which do you choose?

I might be financing $12,000 – The factory is offering a $3000 rebate or 0.00% for the finance term. Which one do I choose?

Obviously the answers vary; your lines of “break even” will obviously cross way sooner than my lines. The reason: different factors in the two deals will yield different answers.

Here’s how you figure out the correct answer based on your factors:

For this example we’ll assume that you are considering a $30,000 car with $3,000 rebate or a 0% interest rate, and for the sake of finding an answer, we’ll assume that you’re putting $3,000 a down payment and you qualify for all offers.

First: Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper; on one side write Rebate on the other side write 0%

Second: on the 0% side write in the sale price of $30,000 – and on the left side (rebate) write in the sale price of $30,000 as well.

Third: On both sides add in your local tax rate. For instance: if you live in Queens NY add 8.25% as sales tax.

Fourth: on both sides add $300 – this should cover DMV – Inspection and dealer Doc Fees.

Fifth: On both sides – subtract $3,000 for you down payment

Sixth: On the rebate side subtract $3,000 for the rebate

If you did this right, so far you should have the following results:

Both sides: should show Sale Price $30,000 Tax $2,475. DMV $300. Sub Total: $32,775

Rebate Side Should show $6,000.00 Total down payment and an “unpaid balance” of $26,775.00

The 0% side should show $3,000 Total Down Payment and an “unpaid balance of $29,775.00

Assumption: If you chose not to take the 0% – the dealer offered you a 5.5% interest rate.

Compare to see where the lines cross:

Next step – find an auto loan calculator – you can go on any search engine type in “free auto loan calculator”

I am not able to attach a link to this area of the post so I will simply suggest a very user friendly, free calculator (which we have no affiliation) is chase.com just search:

“Free chase auto loan calculator”

Calculate:

REBATE SIDE

$26,775 Amount Financed

5.5% APR

60 Month Term

Answer: Payment $511.43

Total Interest: $3,910.80

Total of Payments $30,685.00

0% SIDE

$29,775.00 Amount Financed

0% APR

Answer: Payment $496.25

Total of Payments $29,775.00

Summery: On your deal, 0% came out to be $910.80 less than the REBATE, so obviously the better deal for you is 0%.

On my worksheet, using the same method, it turned out that the rebate was quite a bit more of savings, (only because I was financing much less) if I chose to finance more money perhaps the lines would cross sooner.

Final notes to remember:

1) If you choose to lower or raise you down payment and lower and raise your amount financed, the out come of “which one” is a better deal will vary. So, keep testing the different scenarios using the method provided above and you will find the best deal for you. Every time!

2) Be careful – No rebate is final, while low financing isn’t: Keep in mind this very important consideration: If you choose low financing over the rebate – essentially you just paid more for the vehicle and you can’t get that money back. However, you chose to do so in return for free financing terms. (Very smart) You did your homework, you made your decision based on solid factors and you made the overall least expensive decision. EXCELLENT WORK! Though, you must remember you made this comparison based on a 5 year repayment term. If you keep the vehicle for 5 years, and pay as expected you win, your calculations were perfect and you achieved the best deal for you. On the other hand, if something changes and for any reason you decide that you are not going to keep this vehicle beyond the second or third year… Then, you just gave back the benefit of the low financing. The variables have changed once again and the better deal swings back to the rebate. So remember, in the privacy non pressured environment of your own home; carefully consider all your options and likelihoods. For instance, if you know you don’t keep a vehicle beyond a couple of years, this must be included as a decision factors.

Long story short: Always compile all the facts first, limit the variables that can change the deal and negotiate with confidence.

A free service: http://www.BuyerCents.com, assists clients with good or bad credit alike. The BuyerCents program helps people understand the “pit falls” they should avoid, while additionally assisting with the general do’s and don’ts that cause many people to over pay or simply get ripped off at the dealership.

While BuyerCents is not claiming that all dealerships try to rip people off, its intention is to see that customers are treated fairly and all parties are “happy” with the deal. BuyerCents motive is not for dealerships to lose money, but simply to exchange aggressive, no nonsense pricing for a higher volume of loyal and able customers. http://www.BuyerCents.com

How to Choose the Best Baseball Equipment

How to Choose the Best Baseball Equipment

With baseball just around the corner, most cities across the USA have youth leagues like Little League. Baseball teams for kids range from age 4 for tee-ball to high school before these kids enter college or even go pro. Youth players have more baseball equipment choices than ever before. From composite bats to custom gloves, you can find baseball gear that will fit just about any budget or need.

Baseball Gloves – A proper fitting glove is essential to every baseball player. Gloves come from many different manufacturers and with many different price points and features. Some of the most popular youth gloves are the Rawlings Primo Baseball Glove, Nokona Bloodline Baseball Glove or the Louisville Slugger Pro Flare. Other top baseball manufacturers include Rawlings Baseball Gloves, Akadema Baseball Gloves and Easton.

Baseball Bats – You can’t hit the ball without a bat. Bats come in many different sizes and materials. Most of your youth baseball teams will use an Aluminum Baseball Bat. The better the actual aluminum alloy the better the bat and the more “pop” you will receive when you hit the ball. “Pop” refers to the distance the ball with travel when the bat strikes the baseball. In addition, you can purchase composite and composite/aluminum mix bats which give even better performance. Some of the best Youth Baseball Bats include the Easton Stealth bat, Louisville Slugger baseball bat, and the Rawlings EXOGRID baseball bat. Other manufacturers also include Worth Bats, DeMarini Youth Bats, and Miken bats.

Baseball Equipment – There are alot of training exercises teams should use when preparing for the upcoming season. Training videos and training aids will help develop young baseball players quickly and add enjoyment to the experience. Pitching Machines including base ball and combo pitching machines are available from the most popular manufacturers in the business. Choose from top of the line ATEC, JUGS and Zooka machines all for great prices.

About the baseballs – Baseballs are measured in circumference in inches and weight in ounces. They have either leather or synthetic covers that are glued to the windings and stitched together. Leather covers are the traditional choice because they offer the best grip, performance, durability, and shape maintenance. Usually, the more expensive the ball, the higher the grade of the leather, and the better the cover and the process used to bond the cover to the windings.

Synthetic covers are usually vinyl and less expensive than leather covers. Synthetic covers vary in texture and grip depending on the quality. The high quality synthetic covers have a grip and feel that is close to leather. Synthetic covers resist dirt, maintain color well, and do not absorb water.

Boating Course – How To Choose The Right Type of Boat To Do Things You Love

Boating Course – How To Choose The Right Type of Boat To Do Things You Love

Boating is a fun thing to do and an expensive one too, especially if you want to own your own boat. The most common trap that most first time boat buyers fall into is to buy the one that attracts their eyes first. Kind of like love at first sight. Friendly advice: do not fall into this trap!

Before you decide to buy your first boat, you have to be aware that there are a lot of different types of boats available out there in the market. Buying the most beautiful boat does not mean you are going to be satisfied with it especially after you find out that it does not allow you to do the things that you want it to do.

Choosing the right boat for you is not something that can be done in a matter of seconds. One of the best tips to know beforehand is to determine what you are planning to use the boat for, whether you are going to use it for pure enjoyment such as cruising the lake, oceans or rivers or just going to use the boat for fishing trip with your friends.

At the moment we are not going to discuss whether you can afford the boat or not, or whether you should buy a second hand boat or a new one. We are discussing more on the types of available boats that will be suitable for the types of activities that you are going to utilize it for.

Fishing Boats

So, in order for you to choose the right boat, you have to take your time and decide the purpose of your purchase. Even if you decide that you want to use the boat for fishing, it might surprise you that there are different types of fishing boat designs out there. Choosing the wrong boat will have quite an impact on your fishing experience.

Choosing a bass boat allows you to fish from several different angles. If large fish is what you are after, then you might want to choose a boat designed especially for sports fishing.

However, there are also all-purpose fishing boats which are great for saltwater or freshwater fishing. These boats are suitable for different types of fishing and perform wonderfully in rough waters. Another type of boat is called air boats. These types of boats are designed specifically to get you to swampy waters or locations that other types of boats are not able to reach.

Leisure Boats and Cruising Boats

Some of us would like to have a boat that only allows us to do nothing but cruise along the river or lake and enjoy the beautiful view and nature. If your idea of a great day consists of spending time with your friends and families cruising around the lake or river, then you’d have to find a boat designed for this need.

Below are some of the boats available out there and its purpose.

Bowriders – due to its open deck design, there are plenty of family rooms that come with plenty of seating area for everyone and for sunbathers to work on perfecting their tan. Designed for comfort and convenience for family fun and relaxation. Also ideal for water activities such as fishing, skiing or swimming and also for cruising. Plenty of storage rooms.

Closed bow runabout – an excellent choice if you are participating in a lot of water sport activities.

Sailboats – uses wind to navigate. This one is perfect for cruising down the lakes and oceans while at the same time enjoying your favourite drinks and the beautiful nature with the company of your loved ones.

Fish and ski boats – as the name implies, you are able to enjoy the best of both worlds if you are into fishing and water skiing.

Deck boats – can carry up to twelve passengers at one time. Perfect for bringing your close friends and family on this one.

Yachts or Houseboats – considered to be the most expensive of all boats as it has this sense of power and luxury, though some might disagree. Perfect for those who are planning to spend most of their time on the water as it provides comfort.

Pontoon boats – this is a flat bottom boat which is more like a raft, simply constructed from cylinders. Suitable for short family boat rides cruising by the lakes and rivers as they are slower to run.

Above are just a few examples of the different types of boats available. Therefore, it is very important for you to spend some time in deciding what type of boat that will be suitable for you and the type of activities that you are planning to use the boat for. There is no use in buying a boat for water skiing, when all you want to do is go fishing with your friends. Choosing the right boat means getting the full benefits from your investment.

“One comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself sufficiently often, whether the statement be true or false. It comes to be dominating thought in one’s mind.”

– Robert Collier

Repetition of words creates repetition of thoughts.

Repetition of thoughts creates reality.

By intentionally choosing the words that wallpaper your mind, you change the tone of the room in which you live and you change the life you are living.

******* The Power of Words *******

We typically dilute our words by drawing them from vague and conflicted states of mind. We present a muddy impression on the creative medium in which we live and our reality mirrors our dull efforts. This is so easy to remedy that you may actually shock yourself with your radical improvement in results as you become more intentional with your affirmations.

Words are not just signposts that point to meaning. When we use them to simply report what we observe it’s like using a racecar to deliver newspapers.

Words are powerful instruments of manifestation. When given an open road they will perform extraordinary feats.

******* Eliminate These Words *******

We use certain words habitually and somewhat unconsciously. By eliminating them from your affirmations, you will automatically begin implementing 2 of the 3 ways to supercharge your affirmations, without even yet knowing what these 3 ways are.

Here are the words to eliminate:

no, not, don’t, doesn’t, never, won’t, can’t, stop, quit, will, am going to, should, want to, plan to, hope to.

Every time you create an affirmation, check for these words. If you find them, reword your affirmation without them.

******* 3 Superchargers for Your Affirmations *******

Supercharger #1

==>Always Affirm in the Present Tense

When you are creating an affirmation, you are like an artist creating a painting. Whatever you affirm with your paintbrush becomes the reality on the canvas. As an affirmation artist, you do not have colors on your palette. Your words are your paint. You are pulling potential realities from the formless realm into the manifest realm through the narrow birth canal of your carefully chosen words.

Choose your words in the present tense so that the reality you choose becomes experienced now. Now is the only time that has the mystical power to pour forth a manifestation. If you word your affirmations in the future by saying, “I will…,” you keep that carrot dangling in the fictitious future and you pull the plug on the power of your affirmations. A surefire way to begin an affirmation is with the sacred words, “I am…”

Supercharger #2

==> Always Affirm in the Positive

You are bothering to create an affirmation because you are living something unwanted and you desire a change. It is only natural that you would understand your desire as not wanting what you’ve got. But if you point your affirmation toward getting rid of a habit or condition, if you say what you will not do, or if you affirm that something will go away, you are actually chaining yourself to it.

It simply does not work.

In fact you’d be better off not to affirm at all because this sort of negative affirmation is like affirming the opposite of what you want. Remember, to affirm means to make firm. It is the process of bringing things into form. Remember also that the universe does not hear the word “no.” So whatever you are talking about, whether you are affirming or denying it, you are in effect, affirming it.

Instead of saying, “I will quit smoking,” which is both in the future and negative, say something like:

All my actions are healthy and intentional. I choose my actions and I enjoy all my choices. I am in charge of my actions. I have healthy life affirming habits. I love being in charge of my life.

Supercharger #3

==> Feel as if it’s Already True

Once you have a well-chosen phrase to affirm, one that is positive, in the present tense, and feels good when you consider it, enter into its world. Step into the affirmation as if it were already your reality. When you say it, imagine that it is already true. Feel how you would feel if it were already manifest. Steps 1 and 2 build a powerful rocket. Step 3 lights the fuse and sends it off with a blast.

Affirmations can literally change your life. They are free. Everyone has equal access to them, and they work day and night, always ready and willing to bring your good to you. Use these 3 superchargers every time you do an affirmation process and watch your life transform before our eyes.

Affirmation statements -we hear them spoken often by motivational speakers, authors, writers etc., but what can we personally do to harness the power of affirmations in our own lives?

Think about a time in your life when you desired to make a change – something major, like finding a new job, moving to a new city or home, or something less momentous like a New Year’s resolution to improve your overall health. Can you think of a past experience like that? Now, think about the tools that you used or steps that you took to help guide you through that transition and keep you focused on achieving your goals while making that change.

These tools in effect, involved you setting in motion a series of events to accomplish the goals you’d set out for yourself, and one of the easiest ways to achieve success is to create affirmations.

Affirmations are very easy to use and quite powerful once you get the hang of practicing this daily exercise. Affirmations keep you focused on what’s important to you and help you achieve positive transitions. Basically an affirmation is a declaration that something is already true and has come to fruition in your life in the present moment. You have to believe what you are looking to achieve or obtain has already arrived in order for ‘it’ to show up in your life.

If your desire is to create personal well-being, first choose a phrase that describes what you desire. For example, if you desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then your affirmation statement could say, “I feel good and look good when I live a healthy lifestyle.” Or “I enjoy the great feelings I get from exercising daily.” Short powerful statements are more focused and work much better to bring about results than long, drawn-out paragraphs.

There are some rules to follow when creating an affirmation that I’d like to share with you.

Rule # 1: The phrase must be in the present tense, such as “I feel good”, as opposed to “I will feel good” which implies that at some point in the future you ‘might’ achieve your goal. Remember to phrase your affirmation as if your desire.

Rule #2: The statement must always be written from a positive perspective, instead of a negative one. For example, you wouldn’t say “I don’t feel good when I am not healthy” as this places your health – which you are trying to change – in a negative context. Always phrase your desire/affirmation statement in a positive context and in the present tense.

Rule #3: Repeat often. After you create an affirmation, write it down on something that you can keep with you, like a notebook or card to put in your purse or wallet, or place it somewhere that you look at often throughout your day such as on your bathroom mirror or your desk at work. Make sure that you read your affirmation statements as many times during your day as possible.

Studies have shown that using the power of affirmations can lower stress and I have found this to be true in my own life. When I get clear about what I want in my life and focus on my desires with affirmations every day, I am more content and peaceful. What we focus on grows, so the more you focus your attention on your affirmations, the more likely you are to create positive changes in your life and achieve your dreams.

My favorite book on affirmations and the power of healing is Louise Hay’s, You Can Heal Your Life. In this fascinating book you can learn more about the healing power of affirmations and how you can harness them to improve your overall health and well-being. And frankly, who wouldn’t like to live a healthier, more serene life in these turbulent times?

Using the power behind affirmations can truly change your life for the better. Put this into practice this week by writing down three short affirmations about three areas you’d like to make positive changes in your life. Be sure to state your desires in the present tense and in a positive way. Practice repeating these statements as many times as you can for 7 days and see what wonderful changes reveal themselves in your life.

Foster-To-Adopt – Private US and International Adoptions – How To Choose Which Is Right For You

Foster-To-Adopt – Private US and International Adoptions – How To Choose Which Is Right For You

Considering adoption can be overwhelming & confusing. Should I adopt from foster care, international adoption or private US adoption? It can seem overwhelming to have to choose and the answer for each family will be different. Information to help you decide which path is right for your family. Orphans, no matter where they are from, need a loving family – are you willing to be that family?

Adopting from Foster Care

Why adopt from Foster Care:

There are 115,000 children available for adoption in the foster care system. (Number quoted is from Adopt Us Kids)

The requirements are often very flexible. You do not have to be married and whether or not you already have children does not matter. Your race, sex, and sexual preference (homosexual or not) does not matter. You can have many different medical conditions and still be a wonderful foster/adoption parent. (International adoption often bars those with medical conditions.) It does not cost much, if any money, to adopt from foster care. The training, home study & legal fees are usually paid by the state. If you do have to pay anything out-of-pocket, you will get reimbursed when you file your taxes by taking the adoption tax credit. (Visit IRS for more details) Children from foster care may come with monthly stipends (older children or those with special needs) to assist you with covering their expenses. For some children, this money will continue to be available, even after you have adopted them. These children are often also available for free college tuition (at a state school).

You can adopt children from your own state or from out-of-state. Children are often posted on websites, such as AdoptUsKids.org

How to get started – contact your state’s Department of Family & Protective Services.

Things to consider about Foster Care:

You can choose to foster-to-adopt. Which means, you will have a child placed in your home as a foster child. The child will be in the process of being declared available for adoption. You will have an opportunity to have the child in your home before you make a final decision to adopt or not. The downside is, there is a small chance after the child is placed in your home that the birth family may choose to take the child back. This window of opportunity for the birth family is small – usually 6 months or so. Once that period is over, the child can not be taken from you. You will need to talk to your social worker to learn more about the individual circumstances of your child. Children were removed from their families and often come from abusive backgrounds. Children may have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused. Children may have been exposed to alcohol or drugs while in the womb. An excellent book to help you parent these children is “Parenting the Hurt Child” by Gregory Keck and Regina Kupecky. Only 3% of children in foster care are less than one year old. The odds of getting a baby are slim. 60% of children in foster care are over 6 years old. 60% of children are minority. (Numbers quoted are from the Adoption Institute)

Private U.S. Adoptions

Why adopt from private adoption:

Parents choose to give up their child for adoption and often pick out the family for their child. These adoptions are often through profit and non-profit agencies. You may also go through an adoption attorney. If you would like a newborn, this is often the only way to add a newborn to your family. Most private adoptions are for children under 6 months of age. Many times, the adoptive parents will be able to bring their baby home from the hospital. More information is available about the child. You will likely know information about the birth family, including medical history. More choice – you have a greater say in choosing your child. (In international adoption, a social worker will choose your child for you & you can only decline them if they have significant medical conditions.)

Things to consider about Private Adoption:

Private adoptions are not cheap. The price will vary depending on the agency you use, but are usually between $10,000 – $20,000. Also, these fees may vary greatly based on the circumstances such However, do not forget about the adoption tax credit from IRS. You may qualify to have a tax credit of up to $13,000. You will usually know who the birth parents are and they will (usually) know who you are. The birth mother is often the one who picked you! You will have the option of keeping in contact with the birth mother/family (an “open adoption”). Birth mothers can change their mind. However, this is governed by law & will be determined by the state that you live in. Most states limit it from the day the child is born up to 30 days later. You may not get to choose the gender. You may be matched with a child that is not born yet & the gender is unknown.

Adopting Internationally

Why adopt Internationally:

There are 143 million orphans in the world. (Number by Unicef)

You can pick the country you adopt from & your child’s ethnicity. The most popular countries for adoptions are (listed in order) – China, Ethiopia, Russia, South Korea, Guatemala, Ukraine, Vietnam, Haiti, Kazakhstan, India. (Source – US State Department)

You may be able to choose their gender. Each country has different rules on this issue, but many will let you state a preference. If you already have a child, this may impact whether or not you can specify gender.

You can request a certain age. While newborns are unheard of in international adoption, it is possible to get a child under 1 or older. Most children will be closer to 1 by the time the are brought home, if you request a baby. There are many toddlers and younger children available (as well as older children).

Very unlikely, if not impossible, that a child once he/she is matched with you will be taken back by the birth family.

Things to consider about International Adoption:

It is expensive. No way around this – the costs are usually around $20,000 – $40,000 or more. You will pay for your agency, your home study, training, the orphanage donation to the foreign country, travel costs and more. However, for many people, the cost may be a deciding factor. If you decide this is the right option, there are many ways to raise the funds, including refinancing your home, no interest adoption loans, an extra part-time job, gifts from family & friends, fundraisers with your church, etc. There is a tax credit of up to $13,000 from IRS and many grants available.

Choose your adoption agency carefully. Some agencies are only out to make a profit, others are out to help children find a permanent home. Talk with others who have adopted using your agency. Research the agency on Better Business Bureau. Join adoption groups online & see what others are saying about the agency.

International affairs can greatly impact your adoption. A country that may be open for adoption today could change their laws tomorrow. Countries change their requirements for adoptive parents & this could interrupt your adoption plans. Visit http://www.adoption.state.gov/ for more information about international adoption.

This will usually be a closed adoption. You may know very little if anything about the birth family. You may not have any medical history about the child or their birth family. Sometimes, the child’s birthdate is just a guess.

The requirements for international adoption are very strict. If you have medical or mental conditions, you may not be allowed to adopt. If you have too many children, weigh too much, have too many divorces, or even single or homosexual, some countries will not allow you to adopt. Each countries requirements vary, with China being one of the strictest and countries in Africa often more lenient.

NO MATTER WHERE YOU ADOPT FROM:

There are 143 million orphans in the world. You can choose to make it 143 million – 1.

As you begin this process, be sure and talk with families who have adopted. If you do not know of anyone who has adopted, contact an adoption agency and ask for references. Some churches have orphan/adoption ministries where those who have adopted get together for support. They would love to have you join them and ask questions. Also, the internet is full of families who blog about their adoption. You can “follow” their blogs and see what they experience. One family you can follow is the Redden family as they adopt a special needs little girl from China. http://whenlovebringsyoutome.blogspot.com/
