Console Gaming vs. Computer Gaming

Console Gaming vs. Computer Gaming

It’s an age-old question that will only get more and more intense in the coming year as the Xbox 360 is in full swing and the PS3 and Revolution release. Which is better? What system is right for me? Well, I would suggest both, but if you have to choose one or the other then you have to consider a few things.

Price is definitely a big issue. I mean, when’s the last time you didn’t even bat an eye when are buying something 500 bucks or more? The bottom line: Computer gaming is more expensive. Why? Because computers aren’t made just for games. They are calculators, word processors, Internet navigators, music players, movie watchers, and photo editors. They are much more than a gaming machine. Consoles, on the other hand, generally aren’t. It’s only recently that consoles have gone online starting with the Dreamcast and I haven’t seen anyone printing off spreadsheets or book reports from one yet. Consoles are purely for gaming and run between 100-500 bucks. PCs on the other hand are much more than a gaming machine and run between 1,500-3,000 dollars and need to be upgraded every now and again to play the newest and greatest games.

Genre is an issue. If you are a Real Time Strategy fan and only have a console, I mourn for you. And if you are a platformer fan, then computer gaming will be a sad mistake. Genre makes a big deal because of the controller vs. keyboard/mouse issue. Different games play much better on the different configurations. Computer gaming is best for Real Time Strategy (RTS) games, First Person Shooters (FPS), Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORG), Flight Simulation games, and Point and Click Adventure games. The consoles on the other hand are better for Fighting games, Action/Adventure games, Platformers, Role Playing Games (RPG), and Sports games.

Tech savvy can possibly be an issue. Computers are a little more unstable than consoles. I mean, when’s the last time you saw a Playstation lock up or get a blue screen of death? Never, right? The same thing comes in here. Some computer games might be a little stubborn to set up the way your computer likes it or your computer might not meet the system requirements. Consoles, on the other hand, don’t have that problem. The people designing the games have to fit the requirements of the console so that you don’t have a problem. If you have a basic knowledge of computers, you’ll be fine. If you don’t, then a console might be better for you.

So as I’ve explained, if you want more than a gaming system for school and work or you just like gaming genres like RTS and MMORG games, I would go with a PC. If you love platformers, Action/Adventure, or Sports games or your wallet is a tad on the empty side, I’d go with a console. It won’t be able to surf the Internet or help you with anything else, but it’ll play some great games.

If you want a console by the end of this article, then you have 3 options at the moment. You could buy a Gamecube if you like innovation, buy a Xbox if you like the best graphics and FPS games, or buy a PS2 if you want a huge library of games or love fighting games, Action/Adventure games, platformers, and RPG games. You also have another option. You could wait until the Xbox 360 comes out this month and get that or wait until the Nintendo Revolution and PS3 come out next year.

What if the information is spread across all these places instead of one place? Then you spend more time looking for the information to do it yourself than you would doing the actual task.

You could buy a book or an e-book that has some of the information or you could go to the local collage and take courses that teach theory but not any actual how to do it. Or you could buy one of those ‘Dummies’ books that leave you wondering what did you miss because they don’t go far enough to complete the job. Then you could go buy another book to see if that had the information to complete the job. By now you are sitting in front of your broken computer scratching your head wondering what they are talking about, micro, nana, cap, resistor, bus, Mega Hertz, Giga bytes, totally Greek!

Now you have invested as much money and quadruple as much time as it would have been to have a computer tech come to you and repair the computer. Not much of a choice is it, looking for the information all over the world, litterly, and the world wide web.

Benefits Between Console Games and Computer Games

Benefits Between Console Games and Computer Games

There are many benefits of playing console games verses computer games; one of the major benefits is the fact that the console games are generally cheaper than having to buy a personal computer. However, computer games possess way better graphics than any other video game you will ever play. Therefore, it is difficult to decide which type of system you want to choose.

The console games are somewhat easier to set up and to play in fact they are so simple that young children can manage to play them without difficulty. Playing video games enables the player to escape into a new world of action and adventure. The player feels like he or she becomes the character in the game, and no task or level is too great to accomplish. However, you look at it; it depends on what game you choose to play. There are many levels of strategic missions to accomplish. There is the fantasy attached to see your self as being and doing something special like saving a downed solder in battle or saving lives. However, video games are not real and will in no way prepare you for real life.

Video games require skill and coordination as well as memory a player must learn and remember what each button does as well as learn the outline of the game. All of this is in order to conquer the game. Playing video games can be addicting to a person playing the games but would you rather have you child at home playing video games or out in the world getting into trouble.

The console games have recently developed systems that provide much better quality of games and features. They also have increased in the price and numbers for these types of consoles. The newer console systems allow players to play on or off line. If you choose to play online then this enables you to play multiple player games as well as chat with new people.

The computer game consoles have opened up a completely new world to video game players. The more advanced systems that connect to the computer allows the players to play alone or with groups of players or teams to venture into unknown or alien worlds and accomplish even greater feats than the older game could. The technology in computer advancement has improved the graphics so much everything on the screen is life like or real in appearance.

The only draw back is the more advanced the technology the greater the cost of producing the games and the systems. Therefore, as you can see there are many benefits to both the console games as well as the computer games: so either one will allow you to escape from the everyday world of trouble for a short while.

Computer Forensics Tools

Computer Forensics Tools

In general, a computer forensic investigator will use a tool in order to gather data from a system (e.g. a computer or computer network) without altering the data on that system. This aspect of an investigation, the care taken to avoid altering the original data, is a fundamental principle of computer forensic examination and some of the tools available include functionality specifically designed to uphold this principle. In reality it is not always easy to gather data without altering the system in some way (even the act of shutting a computer down in order to transport it will most likely cause changes to the data on that system) but an experienced investigator will always strive to protect the integrity of the original data whenever possible. In order to do this, many computer forensic examinations involve the making of an exact copy of all the data on a disk. This copy is called an image and the process of making an image is often referred to as imaging. It is this image which is usually the subject of subsequent examination.

Another key concept is that deleted data, or parts thereof, may be recoverable. Generally speaking, when data is deleted it is not physically wiped from the system but rather only a reference to the location of the data (on a hard disk or other medium) is removed. Thus the data may still be present but the operating system of the computer no longer “knows” about it. By imaging and examining all of the data on a disk, rather than just the parts known to the operating system, it may be possible to recover data which has been accidentally or purposefully deleted.

Although most real world tools are designed to carry out a specific task (the hammer to hammer nails, the screwdriver to turn a screw, etc.) some tools are designed to be multi-functional. Similarly some computer forensic tools are designed with only one purpose in mind whereas others may offer a whole range of functionality. The unique nature of every investigation will determine which tool from the investigator’s toolkit is the most appropriate for the task in hand.

As well as differing in functionality and complexity, computer forensic tools also differ in cost. Some of the market-leading commercial products cost thousands of dollars while other tools are completely free. Again, the nature of the forensic examination and the goal of the investigation will determine the most appropriate tools to be used.

The collection of tools available to the investigator continues to expand and many tools are regularly updated by their developers to enable them to work with the latest technologies. Furthermore, some tools provide similar functionality but a different user interface, whereas others are unique in the information they provide to the examiner. Against this background it is the task of the computer forensic examiner to judge which tools are the most appropriate for an investigation, bearing in mind the nature of the evidence which needs to be collected and the fact that it may at some stage be presented to a court of law. Without doubt, the growing number of both civil and criminal cases where computer forensic tools play a significant role makes this a fascinating field for all those involved.

Know What is Running on Your Computer and How This Information Can Help Speed Up Your PC

Know What is Running on Your Computer and How This Information Can Help Speed Up Your PC

One of the things that happens to many Windows users is that their computers end up slowing down over time. Much of this is attributed to virus issues, malware problems, and registry errors. There are programs to deal with each one of those. One problem that a user causes on their own is not knowing what programs are running on their computer at all times.

To find out what programs are currently open and running, the easiest way is to hit Control + Alt + Delete. Push these and hold all three down at the same time until you see a dialogue box come up. In that box click on “Processes”. This brings up a list of the applications and programs that you are currently running.

Before you do anything be careful that you don’t accidentally shut something off that is actually needed to keep Windows running properly. If you do shut something off, you will have to reboot to fix the problem.

Sort the programs by their ram usage to see what the biggest computer speed hogs are on your machine. You might notice quite a few applications are in your active RAM that you aren’t currently using. Some of the usual ones are Microsoft Office running in the background or the iTunes Updater. You can end these processes to free up some RAM since you don’t need these things running all the time.

Another important reason to look to see what is running is because something viruses and malware will show up here. You can see them open and running while using your computer. Many have become smarter about not showing up in this list but some still do. At times these can also be caught by looking at your bandwidth to see if these programs are sending or receiving data.

Once you understand what is going on with your machine, you will be able to maintain it much easier and help it run more efficiently.

The Mature Worker and the Computer – Are You Ever Too Old to Start Using One?

The Mature Worker and the Computer – Are You Ever Too Old to Start Using One?

My father is without question one of the smartest people I know. Now in his late 80′s, he’s still very engaged in life, actively pursuing his passions and hobbies, reading, gardening, volunteering. His days are full and very productive. He never stops learning.

That said, a few years ago he made the decision not to learn about or use computers. He felt he’d made it to his eighties without using a computer, and felt no need to start. I can’t disagree with his decision: he manages perfectly well by phoning people, and by writing long, beautifully-written personal letters. I love getting them.

But lately, his lack of connection to the Web has become a minor problem for me. He has a wealth of knowledge about the business world and I frequently seek his advice on business matters. Unfortunately, my only choices for contacting him are phone or snail mail. So he’s never seen my website, seen my family photos on Facebook, or read any articles I’ve posted online. I can’t e-mail him business documents for his advice, and since nowadays business moves so fast, I can’t wait the week it would take for him to receive documents in the mail, then phone me with his thoughts.

So it raises the question: Is there such a thing as “too old” to start using a computer? In the end, of course, it’s a matter of personal choice. And if someone is perfectly happy without a computer, I don’t see why they should change, especially if they’re well into their eighties and nineties.

However, if a person is thinking about re-entering the workforce, they would do well to seriously consider learning some basic computer skills, not matter what line of work they’re going into. Today even the most basic entry-level jobs usually involve at least a small amount of computer savvy, even if it’s just operating a computerized cash register. Also, many older people would find enjoyment and companionship in the ability to stay in touch with family and friends that the Internet, Facebook, and e-mail provide.

What usually holds people back is that they’re intimidated. They’re convinced that computers are very complicated and difficult to learn, and that only geniuses, rocket scientists and teenagers are smart enough to learn how to operate them. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. This is why you now see four and five-year-olds who are computer savvy. You’d swear they were born with a mouse in their little hands.

If you’re just starting out, and want to put a toe into the cold stream of technology, where do you start?

1. The easiest way is to visit a friend or family member and have them show you. Start each session with a specific goal: “Could you show me how to send an e-mail?” or “Show me how to get on the Internet and look up a website.” You may be shocked at how easy it is.

2. There are all kinds of great computer books out there – in my opinion, the simpler, the better when you’re getting started. And don’t worry – just because the book may have the word “dummy” in the title, it doesn’t mean you’re a dummy. (I say this because recently a friend of mine in her late fifties needed to learn some basic computer for a new job, and was highly offended when I suggested one of these books. I had to explain it wasn’t an insult – that intelligent people used them all the time!)

3. There are various types of computer courses you can take. Some are classroom- based, where you learn with a group. Personally, I prefer the courses you do either at home or in a classroom, with special programs and tapes, at your own speed, while a teacher stands by in person or on the phone in case you have a question. I never enjoyed the experience of learning computer as a class. There’s nothing worse than sitting there twiddling your thumbs while the teacher takes ten minutes to explain the idea of “mouse” to someone, or at the other extreme, feeling stupid and embarrassed as your whole class sits and glares at you because you’re the only one who can’t catch on to how to set up a margin.

4. If you get a computer for your home, it’s crucial to find a computer nerd of your own, whether a friend, child, grandchild, or the young boy next door. You need someone you can call to say, “Why won’t my computer come on?” or “What does ‘fatal error’ mean?” Without them, your computer will spend more time in the shop than your car. With them, you’ll find most problems have easy solutions.

So jump in, get started. You’ll be glad you did.
