Home Pest Control: Protect Your Home And Family From Mice This Winter

Home Pest Control: Protect Your Home And Family From Mice This Winter

Most homeowners in Missouri have come into contact with the common house mouse at least once in their lives. Mice like to seek refuge inside homes during the fall months so that they will have a warm and safe place to spend the cool winter months. Finding a mouse scrounging around in your cupboard, or finding their droppings near your bread box is not uncommon, but it’s a lot more dangerous to have mice in your home than some people realize. Mice are known carriers of several different diseases and health conditions, and their presence in a home can cause asthma and allergies in young children. Before you find mice in your home this fall, here is some basic information about their habits as well as a few pest proofing tips you should follow to make sure your home and family are safe from mice this winter.

Mice can enter your home through tiny openings as small as ?” diameter. Small gaps around pipes and utility wires into your home can be enough to allow mice into your home, and gaps in siding or wood fascia can be inviting to mice and other creatures. Once inside your home, mice will start looking for a place to nest and for a food source. The food in your cupboards that is packaged lightly is easy for mice to get into, and they will devour whatever they can find, leaving their little brown rice-shaped droppings throughout your cupboards. These droppings can carry salmonellosis, and can contaminate the food in your cupboard. If you leave pet food out, mice will eat that too. They will nest inside walls, and chew up insulation and dry wall to make a comfortable nest for them. Often they will chew through electrical wiring, which can be very dangerous and even a fire hazard.

The common house mouse is easily recognizable; often gray or brown and about 7 and a half inches long, including their 3 to 4 inch long tail. Their eyes are black and beady and their ears are relatively large for their bodies. Mice are very quick and very agile, with very sharp senses. In only a year, a female mouse can have as many as 10 litters, each litter having up to 6 babies. In a very short time, you can have a large population of mice living in your home- feeding off your food, creating nests in your walls. In order to keep pests from wreaking havoc in your home this winter, prevention is very important. Locating and sealing up gaps in your siding, or around piping that comes in from the exterior of your home is a must. Sealing cracks in your home’s foundation and installing a chimney cap can keep mice from entering your structure. Finding all possible entry points for mice is nearly impossible- you just never know what tiny hole they’ll find in your home’s structure. If you have blocked all the entry points you can find, and still are finding mice or their droppings in your home, you need to protect your food sources. Putting food in your pantry in metal bins that have tightly fitting covers can keep mice from stealing your food. If mice don’t have access to food in your home, your home is no longer habitable to them. Make sure that pet food is not left out for extended periods of time, and that your cupboard is clean and free of food crumbs. Having a clean home can also help deter mice from finding your home habitable.

If you have sealed all gaps in your home, and have protected your food sources but are still finding new little mouse droppings, or are hearing them in your walls or cupboards, it’s time to contact a pest professional in your area. Pest control professionals have the knowledge and tools to help your home and family become free of mice and other annoying and damaging pests. They can help you find and evict mice populations living in your home, and they can also help you locate problem areas in your home that may be allowing mice in. In often just one visit a pest control professional can take care of a mouse problem so that you can rest assured that your family and home are safe from damaging house mice.

Using Bird Barriers to Control Pest Birds

Using Bird Barriers to Control Pest Birds

Each year building owners and homeowners spend countless hours and money cleaning up after and repairing the damage caused by pest birds. Not only are these problems unsightly; pest birds and their feces can spread 60 plus transmittable diseases. Safety, sanitation and health hazards caused by bird droppings can pose serious liability risks, and left untreated, can lead to accidents and lawsuits. Bird feces, bird nests and debris can also create a bad public image with tenants and patrons. Individuals, companies and government agencies are tired of cleaning up bird feces or repairing the damage that is caused by pest birds and their droppings. To solve the problems with pest birds, you must use some sort of bird barrier.

Bird Barriers are safe and humane products that deter pest birds from landing, roosting and nesting where they are not welcome. They come in several different types; physical bird barrier deterrents, visual bird barriers and sound devices to keep pest birds away. Choosing the correct bird barrier depends on the type of pest bird you are having a problem with and what they are doing.

Choosing the right bird barrier:

Physical bird barriers are used to keep pest birds from landing and roosting on flat surfaces such as ledges, window sills, parapet walls, channel letters and other surfaces you do not want birds. This type of bird barrier keeps pest birds away by creating a physical deterrent; they can not land on or enter the area protected. Physical bird barriers include bird spikes, electric shock systems, bird netting and bird spring wires.

Bird spikes are the most common bird barriers in use today. When a ledge is covered with bird spikes, it makes it impossible for pest birds such as pigeons and seagulls to land, so they will move on to a more hospitable area. Bird spikes from Birdbgone.com are easy to install, economical and require little to no maintenance.

Electric shock systems are extremely low profile bird barriers that will work with all pest birds. These systems give the birds a slight shock or “jolt” that quickly changes their habits and desire to land in the area protected.

Bird netting is used to completely exclude birds from areas such as under loading docks and eaves, airplane hangars, warehouses and other enclosed areas. Once installed bird netting is a practically invisible bird barrier. It has a long life with little to not maintenance required.

Visual Bird Barriers are those that cause some sort of visual distraction to the birds. The birds will become confused or agitated and move on to a more suitable area. Ideal places to use visual bird barriers are in trees, on boats, in vineyards, and other outdoor areas you want to keep pest birds from. Visual barriers include, flash tape, scary balloons, bird diverters and even such items as hanging cds. Visual deterrents are effective if they are moved around so that the birds do not get used to them.

Sonic or Sound Bird Barriers are devices that create a sound that scares the birds away. These units will usually play some sort of predator call and target bird distress calls. Sound deterrents are best used out of doors in wide-open places. Being heard for over an acre of land; they are very loud. They make the ideal deterrent for use on orchards, vineyards, landfills and electrical substations; open areas where it is impossible to use physical bird barriers.

The time and money spent to install some type of bird barrier is well worth the investment. In the long run it will save you all of the time and money spent each year on clean-up and repairs to the damage left behind by pest birds. Some bird barriers are easy to install while others may require a professional. Contact your local pest control company to see if they a certified in bird control product installations.

Affirmations can play a key role in helping you to leverage daily the Law of Attraction (LOA) for your training for a marathon, half marathon, or other endurance race.

What is an affirmation?

The Law of Attraction essentially says, “We become what we think about.” And we attract more of the feelings and beliefs that we regularly affirm. This is the power behind affirmations.

Why should I use affirmations for endurance running or walking?

You should write and repeatedly read affirmations as an endurance runner or walker because they can focus the Law of Attraction on behaviors and beliefs that will support your racing goals.

Who is the subject of an affirmation?

You should be the subject of each of your affirmations, with the affirmation written in first-person, singular form (as in “I am…”). The reason that having you as the subject of the affirmation is ideal is that your unconscious mind has direct control over you but does not have direct control over anyone else.

How should I write each affirmation statement?

As a positive, not negative, statement: Your unconscious mind will ignore any “no” or “not” in a statement. For example, your unconscious mind will convert “I do not slow down as I approach the finish line.” to “I do slow down as I approach the finish line.”; so “I maintain my pace or speed up as I approach the finish line.” is the preferable way to write this affirmation. Another reason to write affirmations in the positive is that they feel better to say to yourself. And that single, good feeling that you attach to the statement as you say it gives it a stronger impact on your unconscious mind than would a mixed-emotions, negative statement. A third reason to write affirmations in the positive is a practical one: Positive statements tend to be shorter than negative statements. So you can write them more easily and read them more easily.

About the present, not the future: Your unconscious mind treats each statement about the present as something over which it has full control. In contrast, it treats each statement about the future as something over which it has no control. In other words, your unconscious mind operates in the present.

As if it were true, even if it is false today: Every time that you read an affirmation to yourself, you are incrementally strengthening in your unconscious mind the belief expressed by that affirmation. Given that your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between fact and fiction, you can read to yourself an affirmation that is not true today with the assurance that eventually your unconscious mind will align your life with that affirmation such that eventually the affirmation is true. In other words, an affirmation need not be true when written or read, but repeated reading of the affirmation increases the likelihood that eventually it will be true.

With specificity: Specific statements have a stronger impact than vague, general statements have on your unconscious mind. For example, “I am a five-hour marathoner.” is more valuable than “I am a fast marathoner.” as an affirmation.

How many affirmations should I have?

The number of affirmations that you have related to your endurance running or walking depends totally on you. Some people prefer to have just a few affirmations. Other people like to have lots of affirmations, including many that are re-worded versions of other affirmations.

Where should I be when I am composing my affirmations?

You should compose your affirmations at a computer in a quiet, private location. You may want to play some inspiring or gentle music while writing them. A few minutes of meditation before beginning could help your writing, too.

Ideally, each affirmation should feel as if it were an expression of your best self — as if your “higher self” were telling you what it believes you are capable of being, doing, or experiencing.

If you are stumped when you initially sit down to type affirmations into your computer, then give yourself a goal to carry around a pen and small notebook so that you record several affirmation ideas as you go about your daily life. You eventually should have enough ideas in your notebook to produce several affirmations when you return to your computer.

What are some examples of affirmations for endurance runners or walkers?

Here are examples of affirmations that are correctly worded for an endurance runner or walker:

“I always breathe aerobically when I run.”

“I shave at least one minute off my personal record in every marathon that I run.”

“I eat exactly what I need for each walk.”

“I give myself permission to run my own race.”

“I stop for water precisely when necessary at water stops while walking my half marathon.”

Why should I record my affirmations to a computer?

Typing your affirmations into a computer document gives you three benefits over handwriting them:

Typing them on a computer lets you craft them easily. The ease of editing text with a computer ensures that you can craft affirmations that are “just right” for you to repeat many times to yourself over the coming days, weeks, and months.

Typing them on a computer lets you update them easily. Having your affirmations in a computer document means that you can refine them easily to suit you better as your needs or goals change but without having to re-write your entire list of affirmations.

Typing them on a computer lets you print them in different sizes. This gives you the flexibility to make a single-page list for scheduled reviews, larger printouts of affirmations for in-your-face display in your bedroom, bathroom, or office, and a wallet-size, laminated list for on-the-go review whenever you have downtime.

How should I read my affirmations?

Always read them as if you believe them, even if they are not yet(!) true.

Always read them with an emotional intensity that will capture the attention and imagination of your unconscious mind.

Read them aloud if at all possible.

Even if you are only reading them silently in your mind, vary from session to session your pace (from a fast-talker to a slow-talker), your pitch or accent (your own voice, the voice of a favorite actor, etc.), and your volume (from a whisper to a gentle shout) — to avoid boredom and to stimulate your unconscious mind in multiple ways with the same affirmations.

When and how often should I read my affirmations?

Plan to read your affirmations several times a day but at least twice a day:

As part of a morning ritual in which you use several LOA methods to prepare you for the day ahead;

Later in the day — and perhaps as you retire to bed — to reinforce them.

If you work at home, reading your affirmations aloud during your workday may be no problem. If you work in an office, in a retail store, in a warehouse, in a factory, or otherwise with other people in your workplace, then consider using your automobile or a secluded outdoor area as your “sound booth” in which you read your affirmations aloud.

What else can I do with my affirmations besides reading them to myself?

Post individual affirmations throughout your home, in your car, or in your office so that you see and unconsciously absorb them even though you do not consciously and deliberately read them.

Record yourself saying your affirmations, mix that voice recording with different background, instrumental songs that are suitable for the targeted periods for playback (such as for running, for stretching, or for winding down at the end of the day), and play the appropriate mixed recordings at least twice a day — such as while training for an endurance race, while driving, while in the shower, or while completing indoor or outdoor chores.

Bird Control – It’s Not Just For the Birds

Bird Control – It’s Not Just For the Birds

Bird control is for home and boat owners, property and city managers, architects, churches, sports fans at ballparks, the list goes on and on. Basically it’s to keep our structures and statues clean and sanitary by safely discouraging our fine-feathered friends from landing, pooping and nesting on our prized possessions, including our food. While birds destroy many worms and insects that infest orchards, blackbirds and starlings will attack apple orchards and peck holes in apples just as they begin to ripen. So even here, bird control is essential.

More importantly, bird control can save lives. The FAA says that birds are attracted to airports with disastrous results. A tragic example is U.S. Airways flight 1549, which was forced to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River after a flock of geese flew into its engines. Between1976 and 2007, there were 76,000 reports of accidents with birds and aircraft, and of those, 11 people died.

So whether it’s pigeons, sparrows, seagulls, starlings, crows or geese, bird pests can cause all sorts of problems. Not the least of which is the high concentration of uric acid found in bird droppings. It can discolor paint, stain wood, erode metal, even crumble concrete and expensive stonework. And don’t forget the health risk of bacteria, fungi and parasites that live and grow in bird droppings, which can carry and transmit any of 60 known diseases. The fleas, mites and ticks that attach themselves to birds can also carry disease. All told, the costs to cleanup and repair what pest birds do runs into the millions of dollars annually.

One especially effective bird control device is the bird spike. Ideal for keeping pest birds from landing on rooftops, awnings, gutters and girders. Some spikes are made of rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate. Others have flexible stainless steel spikes. They come in a variety of widths and colors, are easy to install and won’t harm birds. Be sure to install a sufficient amount of spikes to cover an entire ledge to keep birds from sneaking around them. And close off corners and all open sides of a ledge.

Bird control netting is another highly effective bird control solution. Ideal for courtyards, patio covers, and rooftops. Properly installed, pigeon netting presents an impenetrable barrier against these pest birds. If you want to keep birds away from fruit trees, crops, vineyards, you’ll need agricultural netting. For buildings and other structures, try heavy-duty bird netting. It’s most often prescribed by architects. Its ISO 1806 mesh test polyethylene fabric is U.V. stabilized, flame resistant and rot and waterproof. The sub-zero stable, non-conductive webbing comes in 3/4″, 1-1/8″ and 2″ mesh sizes to control a variety of birds. Be sure to place the netting over window recesses, balconies or even whole rooftops to prevent birds from reaching nesting areas.

Another simple, but effective bird control measure is the bird slope. These slippery PVC panels are ideal for ledges, eaves, beams and other 90-degree areas where birds tend to nest and roost. The steep angles they present won’t allow birds to get a grip, causing them to simply slide off and move on. Bird slope panels come in a variety of colors to match any structure’s décor. They can be easily glued to any surface or screwed to wood. Be sure to use UV stabilized polycarbonate panels that can be painted to match the structure.

Other bird control products used by many building managers include electric-track bird repellers. These present birds with a harmless, but irritating mild electric shock that discourages them from landing. Once shocked, birds alter their habits to nest or feed on that particular building. Ideal for use on ledges, rooftops, and flat or curved surfaces like signs. Building and restaurant owners often prefer this method of bird control because its low-profile electrified track conforms to any architectural configuration. And because it’s almost invisible close-up or to those looking up from below. Choose a flow-through design to prevent water from damming up on rooftops and other surfaces. These systems use copper knitted wire mesh that’s stronger than steel, resistant to corrosion and highly resistant to alkali and acidic environments. The knitted design features a single strand of higher gauge wire and a tube-within-a-tube design for greater conductivity, strength and reliability.

One novel bird control device is a Solar Powered bird repeller. Its arms rotate at 30 RPM and gently sweep birds away. Ideal for pigeons, seagulls and larger birds, the repeller can be used on signs, billboards, parapet walls, roofs, or any flat surface, including outdoor eating areas. Their are also a number of sonic bird repellers available for a wide range of outdoor applications.

For bird control on a budget, there are an almost endless number of “bird scare” products currently on the market. They discourage birds from landing on trees, overhangs, gazebos, patios, eaves, pool areas, and other areas. They include iridescent reflective foil or flash tape and inflatable balloons imprinted with lifelike reflective predator eyes and markings. Some bird repellers have iridescent foil eyes to scare away birds by day and glow-in-the-dark backsides to keep them away at night.

Finally, for a fast and economical bird control solution, there’s bird gel. This non-toxic, sticky chemical leaves a surface that’s tacky and uncomfortable to most birds. The gel skins but never sets hard, providing an unstable surface for the birds to land on. Birds hate it, yet it’s safe for both birds and people.

Enterprise Carbon Emissions Management Ties to Effective Energy Control

Enterprise Carbon Emissions Management Ties to Effective Energy Control

Governments around the world never saw the earth in the same way again after the signing of the Kyoto Protocol.

The scope of this problem is already well defined at the present and specifications on scopes pf responsibilities has already been set. The new US administration is already bound to address environmental issues more effectively.

Today, as the role of business in the play of climate change is the subject of much attention, enterprise carbon and energy management systems are in the process of becoming key management tools.

Corporate practices and methodologies are always changing and dependence on sophisticated platforms and interaction among diverse stakeholders are increasing. We live in a very aware society, one in which media and communication has evolved beyond all recognition. No organization can keep its head stuck in the sand when it comes to climate related issues and each company must take responsibility for its position.

ECEM systems will be able to forge companies to make a stand and be included in the new carbon economy. Significant efforts are on its way to mandate companies to buy allowances for carbon emissions, which is championed by the CRC Energy Efficiency scheme of the British government. In a very short space of time, the carbon footprint has emerged from the realm of public relations to become the subject of a tradable commodity, core to an organization’s very existence.

AS early as 2010, a cap and trade program might be adopted in the US as legislation on this is on the table. We have already seen the willingness of Pres. Obama to focus on core sustainability, as his executive order is now causing federal agency chiefs to hurriedly define their agency emissions, understand sustainability and plan for reductions. Forward thinking organizations should be able to see the possibility that these initiatives will become mandatory in the near future.

Enterprises really need powerful solutions which will be able to provide the needed information and material to succeed. There are already upcoming Enterprise Carbon and Emissions Management Systems.

Carbon trading, in and of itself, can represent a threat or opportunity, depending on how you view it and how prepared you are. It is certain that highly accurate data will be required and that this will require a thorough analysis of the business life cycle. Asset performance must be optimized, understood and recordable, as at the core of enterprise carbon and energy management systems. It is no longer acceptable to “do-it-yourself” using any number of hybrid calculations and approaches. The integrated system must anticipate the information that will be required and provide it in timely fashion.

Many systems provider like Verisae offer platforms which can help address enterprise carbon and energy management. The Sustainability Resource Planning product gathers data from assets across the distributed enterprise, drawing resources together, providing real-time information on energy use, efficiency and subsequent carbon emissions.

Got Birds – Absolute Bird Control Addresses Top Ten Pest Bird Problmes Home Owners Encounter

Got birds? Absolute Bird Control is a website dedicated to providing the very best in affordable and humane bird deterrents. The site offers a full line of easy to use products that can remedy virtually any pest bird problem, and the products are designed for home use! Whether you have pigeons under an eave, geese in your yard, or sparrows nesting on a window sill, Absolute Bird Control has the right product for you!

Pest birds can be quite a nuisance. They create a mess, and can carry disease such as West Nile Virus, Avian Flu, and Histoplasmosis. It is important to address a pest bird problem as soon as one is spotted. The longer birds inhabit an area, the harder it is to get them to move on.

For years Absolute Bird Control has been dedicated to helping home owners find the best product for their pest bird problems. The customer service department is committed to educating customers on the different products available.

Recently Absolute Bird Control polled its customer service department to find out what the top ten “pest bird” questions they received were. The list below provides solutions for the most common bird problems home owners’ encounter. If you have a pest bird problem, Absolute has a solution!

1. Pigeons On a roof

Birds like the highest points on buildings for predator and food lookout. When you take away the option to land there, they will usually move on and find another spot. Pigeons or seagulls can be deterred by using the spike products. Birds know they cannot land on such a surface. An outdoor sound deterrent also works well in this situation. These units are weatherproof, and can cover large areas. Other options would be the gel repellants. Applied to the roofline, birds do not like the “sticky sensation” on their feet, and will move on. Making the area uncomfortable will be your best bet. Because it can be difficult to access a roof area, calling in a authorized pest control company may be the best way to take care of birds on a roof. To find an installer in your area, call 1-800-392-6915.

2. Small Birds nesting under and eave or canopy

An eave is the perfect home for a bird. It provides shelter from the elements and predators. Scents in the nesting material and droppings will lead the bird back to their own nest. The most important step is to make sure all of the nesting material is cleaned away. Calling a pest control professional to help aid with the clean up and installation is your best bet. Bird droppings carry disease, and the proper protection is a must. Once the nests and droppings are cleaned up, there are several products that can help. The best way to keep smaller birds out of an eave is to block them out with netting. The netting acts as a physical barrier. Treating the beams that the birds are nesting on with the Bird Gel will also help. The Bird Chase Supersonic, an outdoor sound deterrent, is weatherproof and can be programmed for smaller birds. Predator calls signal the birds to move away from danger.

3. Pigeons on a Balcony or patio

Pigeons on a balcony or patio area are a very common problem. These areas provide shelter, and prime nesting locations. Because the birds land indiscriminately on these areas, it is important to choose something that will encompass the patio or balcony. Many people have success with stringing visual deterrents such as Mylar Flash Tape or Scare Eye Diverters. Both use visual scare tactics to frighten birds away. A sound deterrent can also help with this problem; they cover wide areas, and require no maintenance. For table tops and A.C. units, the Repeller, a solar powered unit that uses motion to scare birds, will also work.

4. Geese in yard, making a mess of grass area

Geese are large birds, which create large messes. Absolute Bird Control carries three different products to deter geese. There is a topical grass repellent called Migrate. It is made out of grape extract, and geese can’t stand the taste. Applied to a lawn area, geese will realize they do not have a food source and move onto a better spot. There is also a product called the scarecrow which is hooked up to a garden hose. Every time the unit detects motion it will spray out water. Lastly there is a sound deterrent called the Goose Chase Sonic, which uses distress calls of other geese to move geese on. If you only have a few geese any one of the goose products will work. If you have a greater number of geese on the property, you may want to consider using a combination of the products.

5. Woodpeckers destroying the side of a home

Woodpeckers peck into surfaces for a three reasons, to look for food, to attract a mate, and to create a nesting cavity. If woodpeckers have chosen your home to peck at, there are a few successful items you can use. Visual deterrents, such as the Diverters, Scare Eye Balloons, or Mylar Tape work well with a woodpecker problem. These three items have reflective surfaces which woodpeckers will avoid. The Bird Chase Super Sonic can be programmed for woodpeckers. The unit can cover between 1-5 acres, and is weatherproof.

6. Birds sitting on a window sill

Window sills provide a perch, and often shelter. Making the sill un-usable for birds is a good way to stop a bird from choosing your window. Products such as the Bird Spikes or Bird Gel work well in this situation. If you have birds flying into a window, or pecking at a window, we carry “window alerts”. These are decals applied to the window itself, which help birds recognize the surface, and ignore the reflection.

7. Seagulls or Pigeons making a mess on a boat or dock

When a boat owner goes out to their boat, the last thing they want to do is clean bird droppings. The masts and spreaders of boats provide perfect landing spots for these large birds. We have two great products to help boat owners battle a tough bird problem. The Bird Spider is a very simple product, with very successful results. Steel arms bounce in the wind, the motion will frighten birds away. Usually one spider at each end of a boat will be enough to deter birds. The Repeller, the solar powered bird deterrent, can also be used on boats. This unit is ideal for flat surfaces such as canopies or covers. The continuous sweeping motion of the rods will keep the birds at bay.

8. Noisy Birds in a nearby tree

Its 6:00 am and the birds in a nearby tree are at it again! Usually customers are troubled with the noise and mess birds create while in a tree. If they are not nesting you could try the outdoor sound deterrent (the Bird Chase Super Sonic) this emits predator and distress calls, when birds hear these calls their natural instinct is to flee the area. Visual deterrents in the tree such as our Mylar flash tape of scare eye balloons may also help. Fruit growers have success with the Scare Eye Diverters when trying to protect fruit trees.

9. Birds / Ducks in or near a pool

If you are having problems with birds around your pool you may want to consider the outdoor sound deterrent. This devices uses predator and distress calls to scare the birds. It is weatherproof and can be programmed to which bird you are having the problem with. Because you cannot really treat the pool with surface treatments (like spikes or gel) this may be your best option. If the problem is ducks in a pool, the scare eye balloons used in the pool have proven to be successful. The “Scare Eye Balloon” has mock predator eyes printed on the balloon. Ducks will be frighten by the site, and move on.

10. Small Birds nesting in a Garage / barn

Nesting Birds are tough to get rid of. Absolute Bird Control gets calls about birds in a garage or barn area often. Again these structures provide perfect shelter. As with question 2, netting off areas is the best way to keep birds out. Blocking access to the rafters or beams that the birds perch on is a great way to protect these areas. We also carry an indoor sound deterrent called the Bird Chase Super Sonic. This unit uses high frequency ultrasonic noises to deter birds, and can cover up to 6,000 square feet.

Get Control of Your Acne

Get Control of Your Acne

There are many varieties of acne and many different treatment plans. Technically called acne vulgaris, this skin disease affects millions of Americans annually. Nearly 85% of people develop acne at some time between the ages of 12-25 years.

Almost everyone suffers from outbreaks of pimples at some point in life, making acne one of the most common skin disorders. Understanding the facts about acne may be the first step towards finding a successful acne treatment and controlling your acne.

Many teenagers outgrow their acne, but it is common for some women to need treatment into their late thirties.

What Causes Acne?

No one knows for sure exactly what causes acne, or why it usually begins in adolescence. Since the medical knowledge about acne is still relatively small, many misconceptions and rumors about what causes acne exists. No one factor causes acne.

Acne lesions develop in the oil-producing structures of the skin called pilosebaceous follicles. Oil secretions build up beneath the blocked pore, providing a perfect environment for the skin bacteria Propionibacterium acnes to multiply uncontrolled. For unknown reasons skin cells of acne patients stick together in the pore (this may be made worse by grease, pomades, makeup, etc.).

Deeper still acne causes cysts which are the worst form of acne and carry the possibility of permanent scarring. Genetics also play a role in the development of acne and thus there is a tendency for the skin disease to run in families.

There are other skin disorders that may resemble acne, but are unrelated.

Acne and Bacteria

Pimples are often caused by Propionebacterium acnes, a common bacterium on the skin that feeds on sebum. The bacteria cause the surrounding tissues to become inflamed and acne is formed. The acne bacteria feeds off this mixture which leads to inflamed conditions.

Acne-causing bacteria are anaerobic, meaning they cannot survive in an oxygenated environment. Bacteria called Corynebacterium acnes, which cause skin fats to break down into irritating chemicals, can also directly contribute to an outbreak.

Acne in Teenagers

Due to the hormonal changes they experience, teenagers are more likely to develop acne. Most teens who develop acne have the milder form, called non- inflammatory acne. Hormonal disorders can complicate acne in girls.

If are a teenager and you have acne, you have a lot of company. About 80 percent of all teenagers develop acne, but the disease may also start as late as age 25 or 30, particularly in women.

Acne in Adults

Just when you thought your “bad skin” days were over, adult acne strikes. Just when you’ve successfully navigated the ravages of adolescence on your skin, you wake up and find acne.

There are various causes of adult acne. The new trend in medical circles is to discuss acne as a hormonal imbalance. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or menstrual periods can cause or contribute to acne. Also, hormonal changes related to starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne. Excess emotional strain on the body can contribute to hormonal changes that have been known to cause acne as well.

Adult acne is different from teenage acne and therefore your treatment approach should be different.

Severe Acne

Boys have more severe acne and develop it more often than girls. Severe acne can cause scars which will never disappear. All but the most severe grades of acne are controllable although not curable. The most severe type of acne consists of cysts (closed sacs) and nodules (hard swellings).

Vigorous treatment of more severe types of acne can help prevent facial scarring.

Treatment of Acne

There is a myriad of products sold for the treatment of acne, many of them without any scientifically proven effects.

The primary products used to treat acne are a pharmaceutical grade glycolic acid solution and a topical antibiotic. By applying a chemical solution to the skin, known as a chemical peel, mild scarring and certain types of acne may be treated.

Non-prescription medications are available over the counter to treat mild forms of acne. Topical antibiotics are commonly used in the treatment of acne and are often prescribed along with a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids are used in the treatment of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne.

The cost and duration of acne treatment with topical applications and oral antibiotics make standard therapy far from ideal. This is why researchers have been studying the effects of specific peak wavelengths of light in the treatment of acne, with very successful results.

Acne Medications

Benzoyl peroxide inhibits the bacteria that cause acne. As with other acne medications, overexposure to extreme wind or cold or use of irritating skin care products may aggravate the skin.

Most acne medications only mask the symptoms of acne and do nothing to stop the real cause of acne. There are even herbal based acne medications, such as tea tree oil.

Today with proper treatment, acne can usually be dealt with successfully and controlled before it becomes totally unsightly. If a vigorous approach of study and application is made, the effects of acne can be greatly reduced and in some cases overcome entirely.

Take Control of Your Health and Fitness and You Can Have Everything You Always Wanted in Life

Take Control of Your Health and Fitness and You Can Have Everything You Always Wanted in Life

When is the last time you heard someone say, “Well, if you don’t have your health what do you have?” Can you relate to this sentiment? Can you take this sentiment to heart and embrace it? Maybe, for the rest of your life?

We all know and understand the idea that you can have all the money in the world; or, the perfect relationship; or, the perfect house – but, if you don’t have your health to go with it, then you may not be able to enjoy whatever it is that is so perfect. So, what’s the real message here? It’s simply to begin putting your health and fitness higher up on your list of priorities so that you don’t find yourself one day not able to enjoy what you have worked so hard your whole life for. And, by higher up on your list I mean very close to the top!

But, I can hear your objections now. I don’t have the time to do any more than what I am doing now. This obligation is more important. My boss won’t understand. My family needs me now. And, on and on. Look, you can give me all of the reasons in the world but you and I both know that your current situation is merely a manifestation of every decision that you have made up to this point, right? Even if you were not able to control certain things (e.g. disease that struck a relative, etc.) you still were not totally left with absolutely no control. So, your current situation, for the most part, is really just a result of past decisions that you have made. Well, if that is the case then don’t you think that you can begin to reverse your current situation by controlling your decisions going forward? Of course you can. You know it. And, I know it. No excuses.

Look at it like this peoples – you can give up control, but never responsibility for your life. It does not matter what is happening, who is in your life, or what you are going through – in the end, whether you choose to take the reins and take control of your life or not, you, and only you, are stuck with the consequences of your decisions. Period!

So, if you don’t want that future scenario to happen to you – do something about it! Talk to a trusted friend about it. Just don’t tell me you don’t have time. Make the time and do it now – take control of your health and fitness!

Look at taking control of your health and fitness as an investment of time and money. You see, health and fitness boils down to this – health is how you feel and fitness is how you perform. When you maximize your health and fitness you maximize how you feel and perform everyday. So, health and fitness is the basis for everything else you do in life. If you can prioritize now and get control of your health and fitness then once you do, you will be working on a totally different plane of energy, emotion, confidence, and self-esteem. And, when you start making decisions on this totally different plane you will truly be able to get everything you always wanted out of your life! Don’t think so? Try it!

Taking Control of Your Career, I Know You Want Too – Book Review

Taking Control of Your Career, I Know You Want Too – Book Review

Indeed, I suppose everyone is concerned with their career, and we all realize that there are choices we make now which will have drastic effects on the rest of our lives later. If you make all the right moves, you will move quickly to the top, of course you need the savvy and skills to stay there, and you’ll need the leadership talents to do it right, once you do achieve such lofty heights. Thus, career planning is paramount.

If you wish to advance in your career, if you want to find the right job and keep it in a solid industry you will need to do a little bit of research, study, and get the correct information. Not long ago, I was discussing this with a friend and I recommended a very good book for her to read. It’s one I could just as well have recommended to you as well. In fact, let me do that now – the name of the book is:

“What Next?: The Complete Guide to Taking Control of Your Working Life,” by Barbara Moses, published by Dorling Kindersley Publishers Ltd, England; (2003), 336 pp, ISBN: 978-075136-4460.

If you want upward mobility in your career then this is the book to read, and there are chapters on getting the right job, surviving in the workplace, and seizing opportunity. Also, you’ll learn how to be the best boss with the best leadership schools in this fast pace world of ours. Why is that important you ask? Well, once you get to the management level, you are in charge and you can make or break the company and your team. For instance let me give you a recent example, no not in the book, but it made me recall the advice I learned in this book;

An interesting article in Government Executive, an insider US government publication with an online newsletter; “Executive Coach; BP’s Tony Hayward: Worst Leader of the Year,” by Scott Eblin and it was essentially about the reality of taking your career to the next level, written on June 9, 2010. The article had this quote, but I recommend that you do go find this article online and read the whole thing to form your own opinion;

“I’ll acknowledge that it’s just too easy to nominate BP CEO Tony Hayward as the worst leader of the year. Granted, he’s got some stiff competition, but he deserves every inch of the big target on his back. Like a lot of people, I’ve got a crick in my neck from shaking my head after all of the stupid things he’s said and feckless things he’s done.”

Had Tony Hayward read this book by Barbara Moses, I just bet he’d have been able to handle the onslaught of negative media which has taken 10s of billions of dollars from the BP market cap after this spill. If you plan your career from the start, from the time you get out of college and get that first big break, until you one day become the boss, then you’ll need this book.
