Green Saving Tips & Energy Efficient Guide

Green Saving Tips & Energy Efficient Guide

Let’s talk about this whole “green” craze. Is it me? Or did everyone turn into a tree huggin’ hippie the last 5 years? Well NO, the answer is you haven’t read the facts and if your not part of the solution, guess what?

You’re part of the PROBLEM!

Here are some things you could do to help out the environment and do your part. Some are bigger things, some are little things, but ANYTHING will help.

- Invest in buying a hybrid car.

The fuel- efficiency on these things are off the chart! talk about saving gas, saving pollution, maintenance issues. with the money your saving on all these fuel issues, these cars will pay themselves off in 2- 3 years.

**Also, an added bonus: you get fuel efficient priority parking spaces at IKEA, and other stores. You get complimentary overnight parking at green- friendly hotels in downtown Chicago or NY, LA

(a $50- $80 savings).

- Bring re- usable bags when you go shopping.

This mainly includes grocery shopping, but department store shopping as well. Target, whole foods, etc.

These bags help the environment, but also keep your items in a sturdy carrier and less susceptible to a plastic bag breaking. With 2- 3 of these bags, you’ll save over 5,000 gallons of bags in a matter of months.

**At a lot of places, you can get these bags for free. Take advantage of that and leave them in visible your car so you never forget. They can fold up and take up absolutely no room.

- STOP buying water bottles.

For some odd reason, everyone thinks that they will get lead poisoning if they drink from the sink.

Sink or tap water is not harmful to you. A lot of places have some of the cleanest water coming from the tap and if you’re THAT paranoid, buy a filtration system. Buy a Brita, a Pur – something that filters your water through the sink a little extra more. These are one- time buys, for a lifetime of water supply.

**Plus you never have to carry that 24- pk of water out of the car, up to your stairs and into the fridge and staying away from bottled water will save you money and save those little innocent plastic bottles we dispose of constantly everyday.

**Buy a permanent water bottle, that you can clean or reuse. This way, you can bring water with you to work, class or to the gym. Plus you can have a custom color and these can hold much more water than the flimsy disposable water bottles.

- Convert your home already!

From the light bulbs to the TV’s, stop wasting money, and start saving green!

There are LCD TV’s that use up more than 1/2 the power of that giant 70″ tube you’ve had since 1993.

Create solar panels to conserve energy. Magnetic power can power up your whole house, wind power can keep your electric on. update your kitchen! Keep an eye out for green- friendly appliances for your fridge, freezer, stove, oven, dishwasher, wine cellar. You could be using 3 times the energy now with your old appliances. It’s time to start saving green!

Saving money has become the hardest yet. Instead of investing in more superficial things, take the time to view some of your options. Open your eyes to a green saving environment, but it shouldn’t stop here – tell your friends, neighbors and family. The more you do, the more we save.

“Someone can’t do everything. But everyone can do something.”

Save Money With Carrier’s Energy – Efficient Heat Pumps

Save Money With Carrier’s Energy – Efficient Heat Pumps

When Willis Carrier invented air conditioning in 1902 he could not have foreseen how essential his novel invention would be to comfortable living in the 21st century. In over 100 years the company he founded has continued to be an innovator in designing mechanical systems for home comfort. Heat pumps are a good example of the Carrier Company’s innovative engineering.

The invention of heat pumps actually predated air conditioners by nearly 50 years, but companies like Carrier have increased the efficiency and therefore their popularity in the last three decades. Although they serve an important function in terms of home heating and cooling, especially in times like the current when energy efficiency is critical, many people have no idea what they are and how they work.

A heat pump is a mechanical device that moves heat from one location to another. They draw heat from the air, from the ground, or from water, and either cool it (in warm weather) or heat it (in cold weather). Because they move energy rather than create energy they are an energy-efficient replacement for traditional furnaces and air conditioners, particularly in moderate climates. For example, by replacing an electric furnace with an electric pump, a homeowner can save about 35 percent on the cost of electricity for heating. They also require less energy for cooling because they remove moisture from the air more efficiently than do standard air conditioners.

Geothermal heat pumps transfer heat between the house and either the ground or a nearby source of water. Because of relatively constant ground and water temperatures, geothermal pumps are particularly energy efficient. They are, however, more costly to install, and costs vary according to the lot size and soil type. Geothermal pumps are more successful than air-source heat pumps in extremely hot or cold climates.

The absorption heat pump is a new option for heating systems for large homes. Instead of being driven by electricity, natural gas, propane, or solar-heated or geothermal-heated water fuels the system. Absorption pumps are often called gas-fired pumps because gas is the most common heat source. A big advantage of absorption pumps is that they can use a variety of fuels, making them particularly valuable for homes that do not have electric power.

Another way to maximize efficiency with a heat pump is with a hybrid system like Carrier’s dual fuel system. The system combines a gas furnace with an electric pump and switches back and forth between the two. An innovation in air-source heat pumps called reverse cycle chillers allows homeowners to choose from a variety of distribution systems for heating and cooling, resulting in greater comfort and lower energy costs.

When choosing a heat pump, homeowners should look for the EnergyGuide Label, which gives the system’s heating and cooling efficiency ratings. These ratings make it easier to compare the efficiency of various systems. Companies such as Carrier and Lennox offer different sizes and models of heat pumps that operate at different efficiencies.

Do You Want to Be More Energy Efficient?

Do You Want to Be More Energy Efficient?

Want to save money with money saving tips? It’s easy to save money in these tough economic times. Do you want to learn more on how to accomplish that?

Maybe you already have started with a few ideas and you’re looking for some more to do your part in making a better more Energy Efficient world. At the same time reducing your “footprint” on the environment and put money back into your pocket. It seems lately all we hear about is how we all should be going Green. Lets take a look at a few ways to accomplish this and at the same time putting some of that hard earned cash back into your pocket instead of throwing it out the window.

Lately, more and more products are being made Energy Efficient. Lets start off with a few easy ones such as our light bulbs, household appliances, building materials and a big one right now with skyrocketing fuel prices; our cars!

You’ve already heard about how we should be replacing those old incandescent light bulbs with the newer alternative Compact Fluorescent Lamps. For now the Compact Fluorescent is better on your pocket book and a good Energy Efficient alternative. What they don’t tell you is how to dispose of those Compact Fluorescent Lamps or any Fluorescent lamp for that matter. Do you just throw it in the trash? Heck no! You should not throw them in your trash. It’s bad for our environment. Have you ever replaced a lamp only to break it in the process? A Compact Fluorescent Lamp poses a problem, there is mercury vapor in it. You need to be careful with replacement and disposal. This is why we are starting to see the dawn of the LED lamp. LED is quite a bit more expensive right now but we should start to see the price drop as more people become educated on the dangers that are present with Compact Fluorescents. The LED does have a longer life and you don’t have to worry about harming the environment or yourself by inhaling the mercury vapor, should you happen to break a lamp. Contact your local department of sanitation office for a fluorescent disposal location.

Our household appliances are catching on as well. We are already able to purchase better Energy Efficient refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, toasters, blenders and the list goes on and on. There are a number of ways to reduce your consumption of energy with these newer products. What about your air conditioner, your water heater and your furnace? These are huge energy users and there are easy ways to reduce their energy consumption as well.

The materials we use in building our homes have caught on too. Have you checked your windows? We lose almost half of our heat through our windows and doors. There are things you can do to stop this loss; the first being to replace them for better built ones and you will receive a tax credit for doing just that. There is more you can do here to save yourself some of your cash.

Even with our cars there is a need to reduce fuel consumption and with the new Hybrids coming out we are accomplishing this. There are new ways out right now that will make even the Hybrids more efficient.

There are also products being made that can and will make more homes less dependent on the power grid. Such as Wind Turbines and making a come back in a huge way is Solar Energy.

Efficient Ways of Searching for Free Online Education

Efficient Ways of Searching for Free Online Education

Even though times have drastically changed, it still follows that one of the best things that one can have is something that is given for free; the same goes for free online education. Why pay for something that you can actually get for free? When we talk about free online education, it may refer to either the actual course or degree that is being offered for free. On the other hand, it may also refer to little bits of knowledge that we can get from the Internet at no extra cost, but are definitely useful in our everyday practical lives.

If we would like to look for free online education involving a professional degree, then we can look for scholarship programs that we may be eligible to apply for. This will depend on the field of study that one is interested in, as well as one’s financial standing. Most of the time, you will be successful in getting a scholarship if you are able to prove to the grantor that you are financially incapable of supporting yourself but at the same time, you have what it takes to be successful and outstanding in that field of study. Free online education may also mean study now, pay later schemes, but be cautious because these programs may have a very high interest in the long run.

Free online education also refers to the little bits and pieces of knowledge that we can get from the Internet just by being resourceful and patient in researching. For example, we may stumble upon a certificate program that costs about a hundred dollars or more. We may have the urge to pay for it right then and there, but if we try to look for other resources, we may be surprised to find out that someone else is offering free online education that exactly outlines the same information and the same knowledge that we have almost paid for. This means that we can use our money elsewhere.

Getting free online education may be challenging, but not impossible. Whether we are looking for a means to get a college degree for free, or we are just simply looking for helpful information that we can use for work or for whatever purpose it may serve, the key to getting free information is patience and determination. Free online education may not be readily available during the first few times we search for it, but once we are successful in finding it, the experience will be definitely rewarding mentally and emotionally. Getting what you need and getting it for free is definitely an experience that nobody else can take away.

Commodity Futures and Options Trading – How Efficient Is YOUR Trading? – PART 3

Commodity Futures and Options Trading – How Efficient Is YOUR Trading? – PART 3

It’s frustrating when we perfectly forecast a move but barely make a profit due to a string of problems and errors. Lets say the E-mini futures contract hits a brick wall at 1300 and you expect it to decline to 1296. This is a potential short sale of four points, and let’s say it does just that. We enter and exit “at the market” making our spread cost one half point. We pay a round turn commission costing one-eighth to one-quarter point. We give up a half point of market slippage by the time we push the mouse button.

The move looks so good we overstay our welcome by a few minutes as it rallies back a full point. We panic out giving up this full point. For even a good trader, this is sometimes a normal train of events . We gave up 2 1/4 points of a four-point move, thus, we pulled out roughly 45% of the total move.

But what would have happened if the move went only two points instead of four? Or what if we procrastinated longer on entry? And what if the move went against us right from the start, stopped us out and then made the expected four point move? There are so many detours to the perfect trade. A big move that we accurately predict is rare. It’s important to catch them and pull the maximum out when they occur. That’s because they make up for the times when the move doesn’t materialize or we mess up the trade ourselves.

The bottom line is not to beat yourself up when you do not get perfection from each future contract or options trade. No one does. Remember that – no one trades perfectly! The objective is to just be better than most. You don’t have to be the best to make money; just better than most.

Your job is to watch yourself trade and identify the money drains. Pretend you are an efficiency expert watching a factory production line. You need to identify and then work out the reasons why you are not getting at least 50% of the best moves. If you can eventually do this better than MOST commodity futures traders, you’ve succeeded and the market will pay you accordingly!

Good Trading!

There is substantial risk of loss trading futures and options and may not be suitable for all types of investors. Only risk capital should be used.

Green Check Up – Making Your Car Energy Efficient

Green Check Up – Making Your Car Energy Efficient

Many Americans are looking for new and effective ways to cut fuel costs and reduce the negative impact cars have on the environment. Some are buying fuel efficient vehicles such as hybrids or cars that run on biodiesel or clean-burning natural gas or have low-emission engines (PZEV and ULEV). If you don’t have an energy efficient vehicle, have no fear because there are several things you can do for your car to keep it green and save money.

Think Green, Drive Green

The factors that have the most impact on fuel economy are tire pressure, engine performance, oil and air filters and emission controls. By maintaining your car and driving it safely and defensively can help cut greenhouse gas emissions and save you gas mileage and money. Driving just 10 mph over the speed limit can cost one mile per gallon. Aggressive starts and stops greatly reduce fuel efficiency by 33 percent on the freeway and five percent on surface streets. Not to mention that aggressive driving puts unnecessary wear on a vehicle and could end up costing you more money on maintenance.

Keeping your car tuned can increase fuel efficiency by four percent. That means it only takes one misfiring spark plug to cut fuel economy. Another important green maintenance you can do is to change your air filters regularly. Driving with clogged air filters can decrease gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.

Maintaining Pressure

One simple thing vehicle owners can do is to check their tires frequently. Properly inflated tires increase fuel efficiency by three percent and reduce greenhouse gases by 1.42 to 0.69 percent. Under inflated tires also wear easily and will decrease the lifespan of your tires. If a tire has too much pressure, the tread will wear more easily or the tire could blow out, depending on conditions. Blow outs cause accidents, so be sure that you are not overinflating your tires.

The side of the tire will indicate the maximum tire pressure. Be careful, because this is not the recommended amount that you should use for your tires. Many people overinflate their tires because they believe that this is the correct amount. Check your Owner’s Manual or ask your local dealership.

The New Age Thinking regarding the use of affirmations can be somewhat frivolous. The idea that you can simply think about or affirm what you want and then get it is decidedly absurd. Yet, there is no doubt that thinking is a formative force in the materialization and fabrication of our world view and the conditioned circumstances in which we exist. How we view the world, and ourselves, as we are in and of the world, determines how we act which in turn results in effects. Our current situation–all the conditions of our present life and the various contexts in which we find ourselves, is a direct result of our past, specifically how we have used language in describing ourselves, our capacities, abilities and goals all of which is a precursor for behavior which, again, is causative meaning it brings about effects.

Language is not only our tool for communication. It is also our tool for thought. We think in words as well as mental pictures. But, language is a rather crude instrument. In English, with a mere 26 letters, we codify and represent all our experience…and communicate that experience, as best we can, with language. How can 26 letters encompass not just decades but ages upon ages of experience?

Language is tricky…it’s not always easy to understand the true meaning of a word or phrase. For example “love” has many different shades of meaning. When we say we love that new restaurant down the street, is that the same as when we say we love our mother? And when we are told that we should love ourselves, what kind of love do we apply? The kind of love we have towards our pet? Our sibling? One of the most common New Age Affirmations is something along the lines of “I love myself.” What does that mean? Really? Do we love ourselves the way we love our spouse? The way we love our neighbor? We don’t do those very well, so how could we possible love ourselves any better?

Because thought, which uses language, is a formative force. Affirmations are important. What we say to ourselves, and how we say it, does have an impact upon our mind, our body and our behavior…which, being causative, brings about effects. It behooves us to consider the positive and accurate use of affirmations as part of mental health hygiene. Just as you brush your teeth twice a day, so taking a few minutes to use language and thought in such a purposeful way that the mind is imprinted with positive impressions, is healthy. And, just as toothbrushes come in different styles and choosing one that works well is a consideration, so too designing an effective and accurate affirmation takes some meditation.

There are some basic guidelines to the proper use of affirmations: relatively short, first person singular, realistic, and yet not necessarily a present reality, vividness and kinaesthetic intensity, which is feeling. An affirmation is generally no longer than a few sentences and mostly just one simple sentence. The most common beginning of the sentence is “I am” and this is actually a very good affirmation to start with. After you brush your teeth, look in the mirror and say to yourself “I am.” After you’ve done that for a couple of months consistently, you can add on to it. For example, “I Am Healthy.” Of course, exactly what “healthy” consists of is not detailed, nor should it be. The word “healthy” is associated with dozens, if not hundreds, of other words, phrases, images and feelings. It’s those associations that gives that word its meanings. As you say “I am healthy” the subconscious mind automatically conjures images of what that means. As you repeat that affirmation as if it is a mantra, the images and feelings become intensified. But, you ask, what if I am not healthy, as many people in fact are not. You can still affirm this statement. It is not a hope or a want, it can be a statement of fact…even though it may currently be a lie.

Many of the beliefs and world views we hold today were built up through repetitive use of affirmations…simple sentences…which were, at the time, untruths. But, having repeated them so often, in first person singular, with vividness and feeling, these simple statements which were not at the time realities, became so. For example, a child growing up and learning language might imitate their parent who might often say “I’m such a klutz.” The child begins to imitatively repeat this affirmation and, although not a reality at the time, can easily become one.

To affirm something in the present which is not currently a reality is not a lie. It is simply a conflict. The subjective reality of the affirmative statement, coupled with vividness and feeling, is in conflict with the objective reality of consensual agreement. As the new affirmative statements are repeated the conflict increases. During this period of conflict there may be very strong thoughts attempting to convince one that the objective consensual reality is “the truth.” By continuing on with daily affirmative statements the creative subconscious mind begins to work towards conflict resolution. One of the two “realities” must be dissolved. There is tremendous force and momentum behind the objective consensual reality. Yet with simple persistence, the new subjective affirmative reality which was in conflict with the objective consensual reality begins to take dominance. The objective consensual reality’s basis, which is nothing other than established internal, subjective, affirmative statements becomes less rigid…it begins to crack. It becomes subordinate, and diminishes, and eventually dissolves away. Objective indications of the new affirmative position begins to be noticed in the world of consensual agreement…a new personal reality begins to emerge which is also substantiated by growing objective consensual agreements.

So, you may currently be very unhealthy. That does not matter. You can still affirm “I Am Healthy.” Be warned however, that as the weeks and months pass, as the conflict between the objective consensual reality and the newly forming subjective affirmative statements increases, there may be tendencies to prove to yourself that you are unhealthy. These tendencies need not be acted upon and, like storm moving through the region, they too pass; and then you may find yourself engaging in behaviors which are more aligned with the newly forming subjective reality of being healthy. What these new behaviors are will vary from individual to individual. There is no prescription as to diet, exercise, etc. The behaviors arise from the subconscious mind which is now accepting the newly forming reality. Although some may argue that you must affirm specifics, this writer believes the more generic, the greater the chance of allowing the creative subconscious mind to organize and formulate the necessary components of that reality without undue influence from the conditioned conscious mind.

There are a number of simple, generic affirmations that can be practiced. For example, “I am competent,” “I am efficient,” I am relaxed,” are some very simple affirmative statements that if practiced regularly can impact the subconscious mind in such a way as to bring about behaviors that are in alignment with that affirmation. Here is a longer affirmation that can be useful to repeat upon awakening in the morning and upon retiring in the evening: “I am a unique person, wonderful in many ways. I am gifted with the freedom to make choices and the means to act. I live in a world of possibilities and respond with intelligence. I am alert to what is happening around me. I can communicate. I am able to reason and I can learn. I will often remember…I am a unique person, wonderful in many ways.”

Few would argue the formative power of thought. Every single tool in our culture, from a simple hammer to space shuttles was first a thought in the mind. And clearly language plays a critically important role in thinking. Sometimes crafting an appropriate and accurate affirmative statement requires some assistance by a psychological wordsmither. A Quick Primer on Energy Efficient Products For Your Home

A Quick Primer on Energy Efficient Products For Your Home

One issue homeowners looking to implement renewable energy always seem to face is what options are available to them and how do they work? The truth is that wind turbines aren’t for everyone and in some cases solar panels will exceed your budget but there are a lot of other products and appliances that might be useful to you and make a big difference in your carbon footprint in the long term.

Here is a quick primer on energy efficient products, including traditional alternative energy producers, that may be able to help you on your way to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Tubular Skylight

A tubular skylight is an energy efficient way to bring natural light into your home. A cylindrical and highly reflective tube is capped with a clear sunlight dome “collector” to channel sunlight and disperse it evenly in a room. Minimal roof penetration is required and they are less expensive and more efficient than traditional skylights.

Solar Attic Fan

Solar attic fans are powered by a solar panel and vent hot air from attics via a fan installed in a gable, roof or wall. By keeping attic spaces cool and well ventilated there is less heat transfer to living spaces, therefore reducing your energy needs related to climate control.

Solar Water Heater

Solar Water Heaters use the sun to heat water in roof mounted collectors. This heated water then heats the potable water for the home via heat exchanger. You can reduce your heating bills up to about 25% by implementing solar hot water heaters in your home hot water system.

Wind Turbine

Wind turbines harness the potential power of wind by converting the energy of motion of a turbine, driven by wind, into a power inverter. Wind turbines work beautifully in hybrid systems or standalone. The success of a residential wind power system depends on space, wind speed and the amount of energy (kwh per month).

Composting

Composting is one of the easiest methods to reduce your landfill footprint and greenhouse gasses by turning your vegetable kitchen waste into rich soil. Using a drum composter can speed this process up considerably and you can use the rich compost for your own garden. Also consider a solar digester for meat, dairy and other non-compostable materials.

Solar Oven

Solar ovens cook your food using the power of the sun. Able to reach between 360 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, they are portable, efficient and completely safe as well as being fuel free.

Solar Panels

Solar panels also referred to as photovoltaic modules convert direct, visible sunlight into electricity. They can be mounted on the roof of your home or on your property and can be incorporated into grid-tied or off grid electrical power systems. Solar panels can also be used in portable power systems.

CFL Bulbs

Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce your energy consumption. They use approximately 75% less energy in the long run. CFL bulbs do need to be recycled properly because they use a small amount of mercury.

Saving Money With Energy Efficient Water Heaters

Saving Money With Energy Efficient Water Heaters

Manufacturers have made many technological advances on their water heaters. They are no longer an oversized tank that contains a heating element in order to heat water. These older models are not energy efficient at all and they could be costing you hundreds of dollars each year in unnecessary heating bills. Newer models are much more efficient in heating water and the very high energy efficient models are even offered with tax rebates or government subsidies.

Most builders almost always install a cheap tank appliance when they build a home. They do this in order to save money on their own costs. These units are either too small for the job in hand or they are the wrong type of model all together.

Smaller homes where there is only one bathroom present will benefit from a tankless water heater. These are on-demand units that only supply hot when it is required by appliances and family members. They are no longer frowned upon where they do not provide enough hot water when required. They are even being used in much larger homes as you can link two together to provide enough hot water for three bathrooms.

Smaller tank models can now be bought that can provide you with the same amount of hot water as your older large water tank. This is because the elements are more efficient at heating water and the tank is also much more efficient at keeping the stored water hot. New technologies such as heat pumps are also able to use a combination of supplying hot water from a tank as well as providing hot water on demand. This means that you have the best of both models within one. This can also be called a hybrid water heater.

Make sure that you speak to an expert before making a purchase and don’t just swap your old water for an exact same model.

Commodity Futures and Options Trading – How Efficient Is YOUR Trading? – PART 2

Commodity Futures and Options Trading – How Efficient Is YOUR Trading? – PART 2

Let’s add up our trading expenses. For the E-mini, if we buy at the market, we give up ¼ point buying at the offer, and later, another ¼ point selling at the bid. This means we need to make ½ point on the trade just to break even. The futures contract commissions will vary depending on whether you trade discount or full-service. If you are a profitable trader and are able to watch the market during the day on your own, then a self-directed discount account is the way to go. But if you are not yet profitable, then you need the guidance of a good commodity futures broker or mentor.

What you save in discount commissions for the year can easily be wiped out in a few weeks of poor trading or human errors. Depending on your rate, commissions can add an additional 1/8 –1/4 point to each trade for the S&P futures contract. The bid and ask can be even wider for other less liquid futures markets. Commodity options can be very wide and illiquid in certain futures markets. This also applies to trading stocks.

In my opinion, day trading should be done either through a self-directed discount account by the client himself, or as a managed futures account by a CTA on behalf of the client. Fast executions are mandatory and almost impossible if a client needs to be called at the moment of every trade. The third alternative is to give the full-service commodity broker wide berth like, “I authorize you to buy two Dec E-mini’s for me between 9:30AM and 4:15PM today, at the market.” Once the broker makes the futures trade, he would call you with the report. You would then authorize him to liquidate it in the same manner.

So now that we’ve touched on the major “expenses” of commodity futures trading, lets look into specifics. Possibly the biggest drain on “swing efficiency” (what percentage of the perfect move you take out) is what is called slippage and skids. Once the decision is made to enter, this is how far the market moves before you get an execution. Sometimes it can be positive slippage where it helps to give you a better price. But much of the time it is negative slippage and eats away at your bottom line. Normal slippage is caused by time delays in the futures pit or other problems in the order chain.

Another form of slippage is what I call “trader slippage.” This can be the result of procrastination and not pulling the trigger right away.
