Buy Final Draft – The Industry Standard Screenwriting Software

Buy Final Draft if you are looking for software to make your screenwriting work easier. There are some other big names on the block, like Movie Magic Screenwriter and Sophocles to name a few (These are both fine screenwriting programs). However, Final Draft is the market leader and industry standard for many reasons.

If you intend to get serious about screenwriting then grab a copy. If, on the other hand, you are unsure about how serious you are and you want to just get your feet wet first then perhaps you should hold off on the impulse to buy Final Draft and explore some less expensive or free screenwriting software first (discussed further down).

Why Buy Final Draft?

1. Industry standard: the most used screenwriting software period.

2. Cross platform support: swap scripts between Mac and PC and between different file formats.

3. Ease of use: there is tons of support everywhere for learning this software due to its popularity.

4. Direct access for registering your work: It is the only screenwriting software with an authorized agreement with the WGAW online registry service.

5. Simple editing: a host of features allow for drag and drop editing as you look at your script from the top down on a virtual editing table. The Scene Navigator, Scene Properties Inspector, Scene View, and Index Card features are what make script editing and formatting a breeze.

6. Download script templates for almost any format of script: registered users get access to their database for templates. Graphic novels, musicals, sitcoms and many more styles are available. Whatever you want to write, you can find a template for it.

Can’t Buy Final Draft?

If the price is outside your means, fear not, because there are some legitimate strong alternatives that cost substantially less or are free. Some of these are marginal, and a few are contenders, but most importantly, they won’t force you to live on pasta for the next 3 months due to a blown budget. Consider, however, that most major production houses only accept scripts that are properly formatted with professional software because that is what they use; Final Draft and Movie Magic Screenwriter are two of the most common.

Coffee Bean Processing Method Affects Final Flavor

Coffee Bean Processing Method Affects Final Flavor

How do you take your coffee? Two creams, a dozen sugars? Nine splendas? Lots of high fructose corn syrup in that latte? Or are you more of a purist that loves the delicate nut and chocolate notes of a Guatemalan? How about the sweet caramel finish of the best straight espresso shot in town? Well, before you can drink up Joe in any method, coffee beans have to be removed from the cherry. Even organic coffee. That is done in a couple of ways depending on the country of origin and it is called processing. In addition to the growing region’s effect on cup taste, each method of processing helps to give the bean a distinct flavor profile in the overall final taste of the coffee.

The wet process is the process in which the fruit is removed from the seeds (beans) before they are dried. The wet process method is also called washed coffee. In this method the fruit is removed in water and the beans are usually dried on patios in the sun.

Wet processed coffees are like those from South America, Colombia and some from Ethiopia. Most Central Americans like Guatemalan and Costa Rican are wet-processed as well. These coffees are cleaner, brighter, and fruitier. Most countries with coffee valued for its perceived acidity, will process it using the wet-process.

The dry process is another method, also known as unwashed or natural process. It is the oldest method of processing green coffee beans where the entire cherry is cleaned and then placed in the sun to dry on tables or in thin layers on patios, completely intact and the dried cherry is removed after it has dried. This will give the coffee a sweeter taste due to the fruit drying intact.

Most of the coffees produced in Brazil, Ethiopia and India use the dry method. In rainy areas however, it is not practical. However, there are many characteristics that are directly related to the way these coffee beans are processed as well. Dry-processed coffees are like those from Indonesia, Ethiopia, Brazil, and Yemen. The dry-process (also known as the natural method) produces coffee that is heavy in body, sweet, smooth, and complex. This processing method is often used in countries where rainfall is scarce and lots of sunny days are available to dry the coffee properly.

Another method used in Brazil mainly but also used on some farms in Sulawesi, Indonesia and Sumatra. These are known as semi-dry processed coffee (aka pulped natural or semi-wet process). The coffee is prepared by removing the outer skin of the cherry and drying the coffee with the sticky mucilage and the inner skins still clinging to the bean.

As for the pulped natural method of processing coffee beans, eliminating the fermentation stage that removes the silver skin allows for a coffee that has both wet and dry characteristics. Therefore, more sweetness than wet-processed coffees, some of the body of dry-processed and some of the acidity of a wet-processed coffee. This type of processing only happens in countries where there is relatively low humidity and the coffee can be dried rapidly without fermenting. The country that has made this process famous is Brazil. FYI fermentation occurs when the inner slimy mucilage is removed before drying. Pulped coffee beans are put into cement fermentation tanks with water where they are allowed to ferment for 16-36 hours.

Usually re-passed cherries, or floaters as they are also called are discarded but some particularly have a flavor profile that is sweeter than most pulped coffees. These particular cherries float in the water during wet-processing because they have dried too long on the tree before being collected allowing the bean to stay in contact with the mucilage for a longer amount of time before fermentation begins. These are sometimes called raisins as well. This method may be considered a fourth method of processing coffee. However, these coffees are usually very limited.

Now before you go gaga and pull up to the local Starbucks for a taste test, get real! You won’t find anything near cupping quality at the green giant. You have to go to a quality independent coffee shop or roaster of gourmet coffee beans. Most of these places are your local independent coffee house. And if you drink your coffee black you are ready to go! You can really pick out the flavor profiles of any coffee when you drink it in its natural state. If you are one to drown your brew in cream and sugar or are a vanilla latte junkie forget about it! You won’t taste anything but sugar. Drowning the coffee will not let the natural flavors be enjoyed and savored.

There are natural sugars inside coffee beans just waiting to come alive. This is what the roasting process does. As the bean heats from the inside, the sugars naturally caramelize and permeate the surface. The degree of sweetness and other flavors are directly related to the length of the roasting period. That is why dark (French) roasted coffees usually taste burnt. Dark=burnt coffee sugars. Get it? In order to get every nuance and note out of a coffee, it must be cupped. That is, ‘slurped’ from a spoon. By doing this, the coffee has a chance to literally cover the inside of your mouth and tongue therefore engulfing your taste buds. There really is not a better way to test coffee.

Basic coffee tasting terminology is:

Acidity – This is a pleasant tartness that is you can taste on the back of your palate. It should be distinguished from sour, or an unpleasant sharpness. An acidy coffee is almost like a dry wine.

Aftertaste -The sensation that is experienced after the coffee is swallowed. It is also known as the finish.

Balance- It means that no one quality overwhelms all others, but there is enough complexity in the coffee to arouse interest.

Body- The overall mouth feel. This is the sense of heaviness, richness, and thickness at the back of the tongue when you swish the coffee around your mouth.

Flavor -Acidity has something to do with flavor, and so do aroma and body. Some coffees just have a richer, fuller flavor than others, whereas other coffees have an acidy tang that tends to dominate everything else

Even if you are not planning to ‘cup’ coffee as we professionals do, you will get more out of your cuppa Joe by drinking it black. So, give yourself a treat sometime and try coffee black if you never have. If you have and didn’t care for it, chances are you did not have high quality Arabica coffee beans for your brew! You can’t find the true flavor characteristics of a coffee bean unless you use the high quality stuff! Go to your local independent coffee shop and ask to talk about their whole bean selection. They may just have some amazing coffees. Some local coffee houses are doing coffee tastings (cuppings) nowadays. It seems to be an in thing. Try it sometime!

If we focus on the thoughts we have during the day, we will be surprised to find out that 90% of them are negative. Every thought we have, any judgment we pass or any word we say is affirmation. Affirmations are directly linked to our subconsciousness. Affirmations are a ‘reprogramming software’ which implants any thought, either positive or negative, onto our minds in the form of a pattern when repeated many times. Our subconscious then implements these pattern into our daily lives either leading to a positive or negative change.

There are two types of affirmations: negative and positive. Negative affirmations are the ones where we think negatively and thus leading our mind to belief that these negative thoughts are true. One example of the effects of negative affirmations can be having a sense of failure before doing anything. On the other hand positive affirmation is linked to positive thinking such as having a feeling ‘I am sure I can do this project’.

Adopt a positive affirmation for a happier and healthier life. The first step is to get rid of negative thoughts, inner-belief and behaviors which lead to unhappiness or depression such as ‘I am so fat’ or ‘I cannot do this piece of work’. These thoughts hold you back from having an ideal life. Your mind is led to believe that these negative thoughts are true. Thus, adopting a positive attitude and giving positive affirmations to yourself is nothing but helpful, and can help you in many more ways than you may, at first, imagine.

The second step to adopting positive affirmations is to stay in present and let go of the past. Don’t think of what you lost yesterday but what you can gain today. It is also important to think not to think of the future. For example, instead of thinking to yourself and saying ‘I will be happy’ try saying ‘I am so happy now’. The positive affirmation should always start with ‘I’ so that your mind can feel that these thoughts are only about you.

The final step to utilizing positive affirmations is to remember that positive affirmations should be repeated over a period of time so that our mind completely accept the thought and start acting accordingly. One factor in this step is patience. We need patience in order to bring about a change in our lives. It might take a month or more depending on our will power for positive affirmation to become effective.

Positive affirmations can be used to change any part of our lives. From our mood to our business, positive affirmation is effective anywhere. One example of positive affirmation can be getting over our anger. Try to think positively first thing in the morning or whenever you feel angry such as ‘I am happy today’ or ‘I have a peace mind right now’. Positive affirmations can be used for getting rid of anger, boosting self-esteem or can even help in weight loss. Some examples of positive affirmation are:

“Every day I am getting stronger and stronger.”

“I love my job”

“I am ready and willing to release the past, now”

“My life is a joy filled with love”

You can choose to consciously think these positive affirmations, or you can take it upon yourself to repeat the positive affirmations to yourself out loud. Saying a positive affirmation with feeling leads our mind to a whole new dimension. Any thought with an emotion attached to it is more effective. Visualizing also helps achieving a better result. But remember basis of any type of affirmation is having positive affirmation. So keep a positive attitude to gain a better life.

Final Cut Pro Editing Starts Before the Shooting Stops – Tips to First Time Filmmakers

Final Cut Pro Editing Starts Before the Shooting Stops – Tips to First Time Filmmakers

In the past decade, digital video, Final Cut Pro, and YouTube have made film making accessible to anyone with a video camera and a Mac. In the 90′s, the budget for a shoestring feature could run tens of thousands of dollars; today that same feature could be shot so cheaply it would make El Mariachi’s reputed $7,000 budget seem opulent.

The bad news is that a lot more people with nothing to say are going to say it publicly (if you doubt me, just go to YouTube and search “zit”). However, the good news is that many artists who are serious about ideas and cinema, and the craft of film making, have an unprecedented opportunity-the chance to put our vision out there and let the public determine its value.

During eight years of freelancing as a Final Cut Pro editor and technical consultant, I have watched the same scenario play out again and again: a client, passionate about a project, has his (or her) first meeting with an editor after the project has already been shot; he is convinced that his twelve hours of footage can be organized in a day, edited in a week, and, at that time, he will receive a finished program that perfectly mirrors what he has pictured in his mind’s eye.

He will then mail it off to Sundance, just days ahead of the submission deadline. Six weeks later, when his picture is finally getting locked for sound, that client is invariably reeling from the tough lesson reality has just taught him, and I think to myself, “Why didn’t you come talk to us before you shot? We could have knocked two weeks off the edit and you would have gone into production better prepared.”

What follows is the talk we never had. It is what I would like to tell every first-time filmmaker before the first day of photography.

Talk First, Shoot Later

Low budget film shoots are frenzied experiences, in which all hands are on deck and everyone is hyper focused. There are familiar refrains: “Hurry, before we lose the light!” or “Hurry, before we lose our lead!” or “Hurry, before that cop asks to see our location permit!” In the drama of the moment, there is incredible pressure to drop what seem like time-wasting formalities: shooting legible camera slates, recording good room tone, penning the sample rate into the sound report. But these details add up, and omitting them can add days and weeks onto the post production schedule…if you are using professional editors. Even if, on the other hand, you plan cut the picture yourself, maintaining organized records and media is still extremely important.

Consider this scenario: in order to save money and time, you have verbally slated your shots, forgoing visual slates. You bring the footage into Final Cut the fast way-one whole tape or card at a time, without labeling any individual scene and take numbers. But it’s alright, because you only shot five hours of footage and anyway you have a pretty good recollection of the takes you want to use and where they are located. After two months, you have a cut put together.

Then, you show it to your best friend’s sister, who happens to work for Fox Searchlight. She takes a look and thinks that Fox would be interested in acquiring your film, if you could make it run faster, funnier, and a half hour shorter. And, could you have a new version ready to screen in two weeks’ time? You boot up your Mac and start to look for alternate ways to structure the film. Eighteen hours later, as you stare at your timeline through bloodshot eyes, you realize that you have hundreds of changes to make and you don’t have six weeks to search through all of your footage for new shots and takes.

You post on Craigslist, and an editor emails you saying that she can work with your schedule and budget. Then you take the drive to her office and open up the project…only to have her ask, “What am I looking at?” Even a highly trained professional is limited in how quickly she can work when facing a reedit with hundreds of clips cryptically titled 0003T2, 0004T2, etc. In order to avoid the likelihood of this scenario happening, here are a few suggestions-think of them as good shooting practices for shorter, cheaper, smoother post production periods:

Visually slate every take with legible, consistent labels. The reason for doing this is it makes logging and editing go faster. If the assistant editor can quickly find and read each slate, then he or she will be able to blaze through the footage. Think of it this way: if good slates shave a minute off logging for every shot, and you have 200 shots, you will have saved nearly a day. This is even more important when recording sound separately or on a backup device-such as a DAT or a Fostex-be sure that your sync markers are clean and in the frame. Otherwise, the assistant editor will be forced to spend extra time locating another sync reference.

Insist on accurate records of camera and sound settings, and write them down in the camera and sound reports. Panasonic’s HVX200 camcorder has 12 different shooting modes; 2 of them are 24 FPS (frames per second) modes, but only one, 720pn24, can be edited natively in a 24 FPS timeline when you ingest from a p2 card; the other mode, 720p24, ingests at 60 FPS. Good communication with your director of photography is key. When you-or the editor-get accurate camera and sound information at the start of logging, it further ensures a smooth, short prep time for the edit and helps to avert a scenario of, say, blowing a day trying to figure out why you cannot pull the excess frames out of your supposed 24 FPS footage. “Isn’t it the editor’s responsibility to know this stuff cold?” you may ask. Certainly a professional editor should be familiar with the current formats; he should also do his homework when working with new and emerging ones, but if an editor gets bad information and is told it is accurate-the ensuing confusion needlessly wastes precious time and money.

If you plan to ingest/capture media yourself and then turn it over to an editor, talk to the editor first. I have had clients bring in media on drives that would not open in Final Cut Pro because they were formatted for Windows rather than Mac and were digitized using Avid and not Final Cut. Good communication with the editor prior to logging and capturing media helps to ensure that the media, hardware, and software are fully compatible. If you are keeping a written log of the takes as they are shot, seriously consider including starting and ending timecode numbers for each take. When taken down accurately, this information enables an assistant editor to organize the footage on the computer much more rapidly than if he has to visually scan each clip.

If you are shooting on a digital tape format, pre-stripe all of the tapes. When you record onto a blank DV tape, there is always the potential for timecode interruptions, which can interrupt what would otherwise be an automatic digitizing process by the computer. Recording black on a tape before you shoot helps to maintain continuous timecode and enables the computer to capture clips overnight, without interruptions, saving, potentially, entire weeks of post production preparation.

Just Because it Worked in Barry Lyndon Doesn’t Mean it Will Work in Your Office Comedy

Many of us independent filmmakers find it necessary to do everything on our own-write, shoot, and cut. When that creative vision grabs hold of us, we want to protect it, and we need a certain degree of control to do that. That said, have you ever noticed that Darth Vader, as obsessed as he is with getting what he wants, never tells his Star Destroyer captain “Take a left here.” If you have hired a professional to edit your project, it is for one of two reasons:

1) because you want what is best for your project, and you value the experience and talent a professional can bring to it, or

2) because you do not have the time to cut it yourself. If the first reason factors in, at all, then you owe it to yourself to always hear your editor out. If he takes your ten minute scene of a guy silently cooking pasta in one take and cuts it down to twenty seconds of jump cuts, ask yourself if your original idea really worked as intended. When you and your editor get into a heated debate about that insert of the dead leaf that was your whole inspiration for the movie, go ahead and assert yourself, but please have more to offer than, “Because it feels right.”

That may be true, but that justification by itself it does not invite creative problem solving; all it does is silence someone whom you have hired for his insight. However, if you can learn to articulate what you felt or wanted when you designed the scene, you will then be inviting your editor to contribute his best efforts in helping you to achieve it. On the other hand, if you are only hiring an editor for reason number two, then by all means telephone the nearest medical school and explain that you’re interested in a pair of hands, not the full package.

Stay Out of Solitary Confinement

Finally, a few words about the relationship between the current project, the next project, and people. Filmmaking is at once romantic, dramatic, and immediate, but it is also desperate. If I had to choose between entrusting my car to a gambling addict or a filmmaker, I would pick the gambler; at least he is going to try to make a buck with it, whereas the rest of us are obsessed with getting our visions out there, business model be damned. Amidst the struggle to get our movies in the can, we are forced to focus on the necessity of the moment: if we need a couple running naked down Fifth Avenue, we grab the shot and run; if we cannot afford to have a stunt double get kicked by the horse, we put on some hockey pads and head to the country; and if we need to raise another grand, well, hopefully it will not come to sperm or egg donorship.

But when a filmmaker deliberately bounces checks, or interviews a prospective editor only to mine him for free information and tips, that person is in effect cheating himself of respect and support and help in the industry. He is also, unconsciously, telling his peers, “I do not plan to pursue my passion-after this one project, I’m locking the door behind me for good.” One of the most valuable lessons that I have learned as a filmmaker is that dealing with people is as much a factor in success as is understanding the craft. We simply cannot do it without other talented, passionate people.

Technology is now in a state of seemingly permanent flux, with new media formats emerging yearly. Aspiring filmmakers have good reason to believe that their creative opportunities are only going to grow with time. When a filmmaker treats her peers professionally and with respect, she also communicates that she, and they, are going to be a part of that future. And communities of forward-looking artists-from the unprecedented chiaroscuro of the Italian painters of the baroque period, through the anti-Salon impressionists of the 19th century, up through the film school bad boys of the 60′s and 70′s-are a hot commodity in every age.

Positive Affirmations, how do they work? What changes can I expect?

Affirmations are one of the tools you can use to radically change your life. There is nothing new age, mystic, trendy or fashionable about them. Affirmation is part of an ancient ‘ Secret’, re-discovered and brought back to the limelight by TV. film and press, transforming with it several people into very wealthy gurus.

Affirmations have been around since man found the use of language and there is no secret ritual to use them.

You can basically have anything you want! This tool, if used correctly, will help you change, grow, and heal yourself.

I want to introduce you to the basics of positive affirmation and positive thinking. Later on you may want to surf the web and find out more about this fascinating subject.

When you start the affirmations, give yourself at least a thirty day tryout period. Depending on the seriousness of the problem you may need more time and more affirmations to achieve your goals. Talk to your family and friends about your resolution to change and ask them for their support. If it is a radical change you are envisioning a life-coach will be very useful suggesting the best approach to use and to keep you motivated. This is a big step. Opening up to relatives and friends show your commitment to change and solidify your intentions.

Don’t get discouraged, impatient or put off if nothing happens in a week or two. Just remember that you didn’t become this way overnight.

Affirmations can and will transform your life patterns and perception.

Affirmations support your positive thinking and together they form a very powerful and effective tool. They function as ‘key words’ of positive messages ‘dictated’ directly to the self. You consciously connect and direct your positive thinking to areas of your life that you want to change or heal. It works as a reminder to the self, keeping positive messages at the forefront of consciousness.

The benefits of affirmations are medically well established and really work.

On the other hand negative thoughts are just as powerful. So be aware of your negative thoughts as they are in essence self-destructive ‘key words:’ psychological mechanisms that make your life rotten.

First,  let’s check how aware you are of your thoughts.

Do you regularly have more positive or more negative thoughts running through you mind?

Only you can honestly answer that. So get ready.

If your subconscious is throwing out lots of negative thoughts then you must do some ‘brain-cleaning’ before moving into the desired new positive affirmation mode.

This may be very familiar to you, as your mind swirls with thoughts like: “I don’t like this, I like that, I feel great,  I hate him/her, I am afraid of, I don’t want them to see me like this, I am not sure about that, I feel rotten”.

Your mind incessantly interprets your experiences as an internal dialogue. These thoughts are generated on a deep level by your beliefs which were formed and accumulated from the time you were born.

We can’t control most exterior events of our lives but we do control how we interpret and react to them.

We create our own reality.

When we change our interpretation a change takes place in our reality.

So become aware of your thoughts. If you change your thinking, big changes will happen in your life.

Take a minute to think about why you are reacting to something or someone.

Get in touch with yourself. Accept the fact that these thoughts may have helped you in the past but they are out of place now that you have chosen to accept only positive thoughts and positive living.

While doing the new affirmations your mind will let go of the negative messages even if you are not aware if it.

Watch out also for resistance within yourself. With certain affirmations you may question, “What in the heck” – “are you kidding?”

It is ok, it is an old habit that is about to be changed. You grew up and had these thoughts for almost all of your life. Now it is time to form a new habit and you need lots of practice.

Let’s get started.

What would you like your life to be?

Think about it and write it down.

Fulfillment with your job, a happy family, better health, financial security?

Don’t hold back, go for it.

For the beginners the easiest way is to choose and write down two or three things you want changed.

For example, if you feel unloved and financially strapped, one of your affirmations could be: ” I am now ready to receive more love and wealth” and you may add  ”from the vast supply of the universe”.

If you also wrote down ‘low self-esteem’  the affirmation could be: “I am an awesome man/woman and I feel good about myself”.

Be creative, upfront and fearless. You are making a statement to yourself of your intentions.

Here are a few simple guidelines:

1- Present tense. Start all your affirmations in the present tense and have them already accomplished. You are telling your conscious mind that the affirmative action is taking place NOW and it is final. I AM HAPPY,  I CHOOSE JOY,  I HAVE CONFIDENCE. It is stronger and much more powerful than, I will be happy, or I am becoming happy, and so on.

2- How to phrase your affirmations. You can copy from an extensive list you’ll find on the Internet, use the examples below or simply write it down in your own words. Do it as plainly or as poetically as you speak. ” I am energetic and full of enthusiasm. I am safe, I am a prosperous man/woman. I attract positive people, I release my anger.” Make copies of it and leave it around the house, car and your office desk. The more you are reminded of the positive affirmations the more your mind will accept the new concept you are bringing forth. You will create a new positive reality and the universal energy will do the rest to connect this good energy to other positive energies.

3- Positive means Positive. Your subconscious usually focuses on the verb and relates it to past experiences. If you have fears, phobias or whatever, be careful with your choice of words. If you are afraid and say I am not SCARED, it will register I AM SCARED. The NOT was assimilated and ignored by your mind. Say instead I AM COURAGEOUS or I AM FEARLESS. Don’t use affirmations that have a negative attachment. You can comfortably use I ACCEPT, I CHOOSE, I DESERVE, I AM.  I developed one affirmation to counteract the negative thought that eventually peeks through, so I suggest you add it to the batch,  ”I ACCEPT ONLY THE GOOD AND THE POSITIVE.”

Starting as you wake up, say the affirmations out loud or in your head five times. Repeat the same process three to four more times during the day, the last one just before going to bed.

I suggest you end the affirmation session with a thank you  note. Gratitude will reinforce and validate the affirmations. Thank God, Jesus, a Spirit, the Force, the Universe or whatever you believe and feel comfortable with.

Visualize your affirmations with feelings and emotion. See yourself exactly as you are stating.  It will add an extra psychological dimension and have a much deeper impact on your mind. Using this method of visualization early in the morning and at night will make your affirmations much more successful.

You can use affirmations to help build self-confidence, self-esteem, self-improvement and personal growth. It can also help conquer your fears and anger management. Affirmations have been successfully used to relieve anxiety and depression and are an excellent tool for weight control.

If you check the web under Positive Affirmations you’ll find a multitude of books and affirmations to help you.

Here are a few examples of affirmations by topics:

The Importance of Gathering Home Schooling Information Before You Make the Final Decision

The Importance of Gathering Home Schooling Information Before You Make the Final Decision

Home schooling is a tough decision. There are many people who think that schooling one’s children at home does not adequately prepare them for real life situations. They will miss out on the fun things that public school can offer, such as social interaction, team sports, drama club, and band activities. These activities are important for emotional well-being and emotional growth. If you have not researched home schooling, you may have this very impression. The fact of the matter is that school offers after hours sports and extracurricular activities that your home schooled child can take part in.

Conversely, many will argue that there is as much social stimulation at home as there is in school. Many home-schooled children have friends in the neighborhood who they hang out with. Some parents enroll their kids in after school sports programs at community centers. It is these after school sports events that can make home schooling more well rounded.

If you are considering home schooling your children, you should ask other parents who home school for more home schooling information-such as what activities they have used to engage their children and whether or not they have taken a facilitated self-study approach or a lecture-oriented approach. Both approaches offer advantages and you must decide which is better for your child(ren).

This will give you a better idea as to whether you are capable of handling a teaching job. Teaching is not always an easy profession. Making sure children are excited about learning, teaching at the right pace, and maintaining interest is very difficult. Schools offer teaching classes for those who want more home schooling information. I know of one m other of three (3) that studied to become a teacher and that made her even more qualified to home school.

Another place to get information is online. There are web sites and blogs which offer honest home schooling information. These sites are run by parents who home school and will give you more information about what problems they have encountered and what solutions they found. There is a real wealth of information on the internet that discusses both pros and cons of home schooling.

Even though teaching can be hard work, many parents find it rewarding and fun. Their children learn more in a controlled environment. They make friends by participating in sports and musical activities offered through after school programs, allowing them to get the best of both worlds-an excellent education and a fulfilling social life.

Adjustments of Final Accounts

Adjustments of Final Accounts

To ensure that the final accounts disclose the true trading results, it is necessary to lake into account the whole of the expenses incurred, whether paid or not, and whole of the losses sustained. Likewise the incomes and gains earned, whether actually received or not, during the period covered by the trading and profit and loss account under consideration must also be recorded.

In mercantile system of accounting, it is essential to adjust different accounts before the preparation of final accounts. It is quite common to adjust expenses paid in advance, incomes received in advance, income accrued but not received, bad debts, provision for bad debts depreciation on assets and soon. Journal entries are passed to effect the required adjustments, these entries are known as adjusting entries.

Usual Adjustments

Outstanding Expenses

Certain expenses relating to a particular period may not have been paid in that accounting period. All such expenses which are due for payment in one accounting year but actually paid in future accounting years or payment of which is postponed are all outstanding or unpaid expenses. All such expenses must be accounted for in that accounting year in which they are incurred, irrespective of the fact whether they are paid or not. In other words, all paid and also unpaid expenses must be recorded in an accounting year if they relate to that accounting year only with a view to ascertain true trading results e.g. if salaries for the last month are not paid, no entry will appear in books of accounts unless these are paid. So profit and loss account in respect of salaries will thus be under charged than the actual expenditure, therefore the profit will be more.

Prepaid Expenses

The, benefit of some of the expenses already spent will be available in the next accounting year also, Such a portion of the expense is called pre-paid expense; since such expenses are already paid, they are also recorded in the books of accounts of that period to which they do not relate. The result shown by the final accounts of a particular period will not be correct because such expenses relate to future periods. Therefore, such prepaid expenses must be adjusted in the books of accounts to arrive at true profit. Generally insurance, taxes, telephone subscriptions, rent etc. are paid in advance, thus requiring adjustment e.g. Rent paid by x for one year on 1.7.79 when his accounting year is calendar year; thus rent for 6 months will remain unexhausted and will be c/f to the next year.

Accrued Income

There may be certain incomes which have been earned during the year but not yet received till the end of the year. Income like interest on investments, rent and commission etc. are normally earned by merchant during a particular accounting period but actually not received during that period. Such income items need adjustments before the preparation of final accounts. Such incomes should be credited to that particular income account. At the same time the income so -earned but not received is an asset because the amount is still to be received.

Income Received in Advance

Sometimes, traders receive certain amounts during a particular trading period which are to be earned by them in future periods. Such incomes though actually received and therefore, recorded i.e. not yet earned. Such incomes should be credited to the profit and loss account of the year in which these are earned. Therefore, such income though received is not the income but a liability of that period

Closing Stock

It represents the unsold stock at the end of the year. Closing stock is valued and following entry is passed at the end of the year: Closing Stock account To Trading Account Closing stock at the end appears in the balance sheet and is carried forward to the next year. At the end of the next year it appears in the trial balance as opening stock and from there it is taken to debit side of trading account and thus closed.

Depreciation

The value of fixed assets diminishes gradually with their use for business purposes. Although this decrease in the value happens every day but its accounting is done only at the end of accounting period with the help of following entry :D epreciation account To Particulars asset

Interest on Capital

The proprietor may wish to ascertain his profit after considering the interest which he losses by investing his money in the firm. Interest to be charged is an expense for the business on one hand and income to the proprietor on the other hand. Following adjusting entry is recorded at the end of accounting period: Interest on capital a/e To Capital a/c Interest on capital being an expense is debited to profit and loss account and same amount of interest on capital is added to capital.

Interest on Drawings

As business allows interest on capital it also charges interest on drawings made by the proprietor. Interest so charged is an income for the business on one hand and expense for the proprietor on the other hand. Following adjusting entry is passed at the end. of accounting period: Capital ale Dr. To Interest on drawings a/e The interest on drawings being an income is credited to profit and loss account is shown as a deduction from the capital.

Bad Debt to be written off

Bad debts are irrecoverable debts from customers, during the course of the financial year. These are recorded as follows: Bad debts a/c To Sundry Debtors a/c It results in the reduction of customers debit balance and addition to the loss i.e. Bad Debts. At the end of the year when the trial balance is drawn, these two accounts show debit balances. The balance on sundry debtors account, thus arrived, is the net balance, after deduction of any bad debts recorded during the year. But after the trial balance is prepared and before the final accounts are drawn trader may find that there are additional bad debts. Such bad debts must be recorded with the same adjusting entry and giving it following effect in ledger and final accounts.

Provision for Bad Debts

At the end of the year, after writing off the bad debts about whom we were sure of becoming irrecoverable, there may still be some customer balances from whom it is doubtful to collect the entire amount. However, it cant be written off as bad because non-recovery of such amount is not certain. But at the same time the balance in sundry debtors account should be brought down to its net realizable figure so that balance sheet may not exhibit the debtors at more than their actual realizable value. Therefore, to show the approximately correct value of the sundry debtors in the balance sheet a provision or reserve is created for possible bad debts. Such an adjustment entry is recorded at the end of accounting year.

Provision for bad debts is an attempt to anticipate possible losses due to bad debts and to keep aside an amount out of profit to meet the loss estimated in the following years. When the provision for bad debts is created, following entry is recorded:

Profit and Loss A/c Dr. To Provision for bad debts A/c

Some important considerations while creating provision for bad debts

(i) Sundry debtors account should not be credited with the amount of provision for doubtful debts because the loss has not actually been incurred.

(ii) Treatment of bad debts or provision for bad debts appearing inside the trial balance. If some balance (credit) is already appearing in provision for doubtful debts account inside the trial balance, it is the previous years unutilized balance of this account. If some bad debts are also appearing on the debit side of the trial balance, these should be transferred to provision for bad debts account, with the help of following entry: Provision for bad debts a/e To Bad debts a/e. It is important to note that, as these items appear inside the trial balance, so these are to appear only in profit and loss account as debtors have already been reduced during the year.

(iii) When bad debts and provision for bad debts appear in trial balance, new provision is to be created and further bad debts are to be written off. If already bad debts and provision for bad debts are appearing in trial balance, these should be adjusted and only difference should be taken to profit and loss account.

If bad debts written off plus bad debts to be written off plus new provision for bad debts is more than the credit balance of old provision appearing in the trial balance, the difference should be debited to profit and loss account.

Provision for discount on Debtors

It is normal practice in trade to allow discount to customers for prompt payment and it constitutes a substantial sum. Sometimes the goods are sold on credit to customers in one accounting period where as the payment of the same is made by them in the next accounting period and so discount is to be allowed. It is a prudent policy to charge this expenditure to the period in which sales have been made, so a provision is created in the same manner, as in case of provision for doubtful debts

An important point to note is that no discount win be allowed on debts that become bad. Therefore, the provision required for discount will be in respect of the other debts only. So the amount of provision for discount be calculated after deducting the provision for bad debts from sundry debtors.

Provision for discount on creditors

Prompt payment, if made, enables a businessman to receive discount. The question arises whether this discount should be treated as income of the period in which purchases were made or of the period when the payment is made, if both events are in different accounting years, it has been well decided by accountants that it should be treated as income of the period in which purchases are made. So on last date of accounting period if some amount is still payable to creditors, a provision should be created for such probable income and amount should be credited to the profit and loss account of that year in which purchases are made. Following adjusting entry is passed for it :P rovision for discount on creditors a/c Dr. To Profit and loss account

Losses by Accidents

Sometimes a business suffers certain losses not because of trading but because of certain accidents. These may destroy some fixed assets of the merchant. In such a case the asset account is credited and the profit and loss account is debited.

If goods (stock-in-trade) are lost by accident the value of closing stock win be lower than otherwise. This will reduce the amount of gross profit. So the cost of goods lost by accident is credited to the trading account and debited to the profit and loss account. The increase -in gross profit will be neutralized by the debit to the profit and loss account and thus the net profit will not be effected. The entries to the passed are as follows: Loss by accident a/c To Goods lost by accident a/c

Commission to manager payable on profits

Sometimes the manager is entitled to a commission on profits.. Such commission may be :

(a) Fixed percentage on net profits before charging such commission.

(b) Fixed percentage on net profits- after charging such commission.

Such commission being an expense is debited to commission account. However, as it has not yet been paid, so commission payable account is given the credit and finally it is shown in the balance sheet as a liability. Calculation of Commission First of all trading account should be prepared in usual manner and after transferring the gross profit or loss all expenses and incomes should be debited or credited except the commission which is still to be calculated.

Goods used in business

Sometimes goods purchased for the purpose of resale are used in business as giving them away for charitable purpose or distributing them as free samples. In these conditions purchases account should be credited with an amount equal to the cost of goods used in business and same amount is debited to charity or advertisement expenses account, as the case may be.

There’s talk by people who claim that practicing self affirmations can really be effective. That it really bring positive changes and success to many areas in their lives. However, there are others who do not experience this. They claim that despite practicing self affirmations for some time, they still do not see any results from it.

So why are there 2 contradictory opinions? What makes the difference between these 2 groups?

First of all, let us understand what self affirmation is. Self affirmation is the act of repeatedly affirming what you desire to have. This can be done in a similar way to reciting or chanting out your affirmations. There are no limitations to what you can affirm for. You can practically do self affirmations for almost anything.

Here’s an example of a self affirmation;

- “Everyday in every way I am getting healthier and healthier”

An affirmation is just a simple statement like that. Or lose the “everyday in every way”. Just go something like “I am getting more and more healthy”.

Affirmations are made with ‘I am’, ‘I can’ and ‘I will’ statements. Such as “I am confident” or “I can be confident” etc.

How Affirmations Work

Practicing self affirmation works because of the power of intention. Affirmations are not just all talk and no action. Chanting affirmations signal of your intent to the universe. You are declaring it to everyone and everything in the universe.

The brain cannot differentiate between reality and something you imagine vividly. The more intense and real you make the imagination; the more your brain will accept it as reality. It is the same with chanting affirmations. When you do it with high intensity and emotion and the brain would accept it as reality too. This is why self affirmations work.

The more you repetitions of the affirmations, the more ‘real’ it becomes to the brain.

So why does it not work for some people?

So how come there are people who say that self affirmations don’t work? Is the power of intention real? Will the brain actually feel that you’re just kidding yourself?

Well there are basically 2 reasons why it does not work for some people.

The first reason is because they are not doing the affirmations correctly. What do I mean by that? As stated earlier the power of intention is displayed when we are repeating affirmations with power, passion, emotion and intensity. When there’s no power, no passion, there’s no belief. The brain would immediately reject the affirmation when it is done in a weak, uninspired manner.

The second reason is because of lack of congruence after practicing the affirmation. Remember that practicing affirmations is not the final act. After the doing the affirmation, you must still put in your effort to work together with it. You must try your best to live your life congruently with it.

That is the mind-set to have when it comes to affirmations. Self affirmations should not be considered as the end all solution. We must work with it. Be determined to help the affirmation take effect by putting in the effort to change our lives to reflect the affirmation.
