Why Disability Insurance? Chances Of Becoming Disabled Are Greater Than Your Chances Of Not

Why Disability Insurance? Chances Of Becoming Disabled Are Greater Than Your Chances Of Not

If you and your loved ones depend on your salary for support, then you probably need long term disability income insurance.

Think about it: if you were to become disabled, even for a few months, how would you and your family manage? Who would pay your bills? Disabling illness or injury is one of the leading causes of bankruptcy in the United States.

Most people do not realize that their chances of becoming disabled are greater than their chances of dying prematurely. Yet they are more likely to buy life insurance than disability insurance. For this reason, people in the insurance industry call disability “the forgotten risk.’ According to statistics from the Journal of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters, if you are age thirty to fifty-five, your chances of becoming disabled are two to three times greater than your chances of dying.

If you are thirty-five years old, you have a 50:50 chance of experiencing a disability lasting last three months or longer before you retire. One in seven workers will become disabled for more than five years before he or she reaches age 65.

Many people mistakenly believe that the government or Worker’s Compensation will pay them an income if they become disabled. Actually, more than 80% of the people who apply for Social Security disability benefits are rejected. Social Security does not pay benefits for partial or short-term disability. Your disability has to either last a year or be expected to last a year before you can collect Social Security. Worker’s Compensation pays only if you were injured on the job and benefits are often limited to a few years.

Your health insurance will cover your hospital, doctor and other medical bills, but you will still not have a salary. Long-term care insurance only covers bills from nursing homes or assisted care center. Disability insurance, however, does not pay bills. Instead the insurance company gives you money on a regular basis. It is designed to replace your salary so that you and your family will not experience financial hardship during any period when you are too sick or injured to work.

What should you look for when you are buying long term disability insurance? First, the insurance company itself should have a top rating from Moody’s, A.M. Best, and Standard and Poor. These agencies rate companies in terms of capitalization, growth, earnings and other indicators of financial stability.

Secondly, you should make sure you understand the terms of your policy. Some policies require a waiting period before you start receiving benefits. For example, your policy may have a six-month waiting period before benefits are paid. In this case, your benefits would begin six months from the time of disability.

The waiting period is often called the elimination period. Choices usually range from 30 days to 720 days.

Look for a waiver of premium provision. This means if you become disabled, you will not have to keep paying for your disability policy.

What are the conditions for renewing the policy? If you’re policy is not automatically renewable, the insurance company has the right to cancel it.

Payment period options are another consideration. Some policies will only pay for a certain period of time, sometimes for only two years. Other policies last a lifetime. The most popular policies pay benefits until you reach retirement age, when you can begin to collect Social Security payments.

Most policies have a residual disability clause. If you suffer a disability, very often you will return to work part-time at first. Or because you were off work for a while, it may take you time to build your business back to the level it was before you became disabled. Your insurance should provide income for both these scenarios.

Check over the policy for a recurrent disabilities benefit. A recurrent disability is one that happens after you recover from your original disability. Your insurance should waive a new waiting period and/or not require proof that the two disabilities were related.

When you buy disability insurance, you buy it according to your income level. The more money you make, the larger the benefit of your policy. But you also have to figure that your income will rise as you get older. For this reason you want a future increase rider or automatic increase rider. These riders allow you to keep your policy but increase the amount of your benefits based on your increased earnings as you grow older.

When you buy your insurance, certain factors will affect your price. You will pay less for the insurance if you decide to replace 50% of your income instead of 80%. You also pay less if you opt for a longer elimination period. The insurance company factors in your current health and may exclude preexisting conditions. Women and smokers may pay more for disability insurance because they make more claims than non-smoking males. If you are in a high-risk job, your policy may cost you more.

Disability insurance policies can be confusing. It is always best to sit down with a professional insurance agent to discuss the terms of the policy together and to ask questions until you completely understand the details of the policy quotes being presented.

Affirmations can be used to improve practically any area of your life. It does not matter if the situation is a simple one or if it is absolutely critical, affirmations can be of great use. However many people who have used affirmations do not get the full benefit from them and even go as far as to claim they do not work. This is simply because they have not learned how powerful affirmations really are, how to use them to their fullest and why creating your own affirmations is so important.

What are affirmations used for?

Affirmations can be used in many areas of your life, for instance if you are going to an interview and you are feeling nervous you can use an affirmation like “I can do this, I will be a hit, I am a winner or I will succeed” to help you calm down and boost your moral and confidence. Affirmations can also be used to change your beliefs about something. Lets say you have the belief that there are no good men around anymore, you could use an affirmation like “I am open to the idea that there is a good man out there for me.” This will help you to change your belief about men. There are countless ways for you to use affirmations in your life.

Why write your own affirmations?

There are literally thousands of websites online offering you lists of affirmations that are supposed to change your life and although the affirmations are often powerful in of themselves, they often do not help the user for one simple reason. They are not specific to the users situation and beliefs. Here’s an example, suppose you are not happy about your body any you want to change the way you think about your body. So you choose an affirmation from a pre-written list that says, “I am beautiful and I love my body.”

Although this may be a good affirmation it is likely to be useless for anyone who is truly unhappy with his or her body. This is because if you have a negative belief and you try to change it by stating the direct opposite the first thing your mind will do is resist the positive statement as it is simply to big a jump from one end of the spectrum to the other. This is why it is so important to learn how to write affirmations that are specific and fully directed towards your needs.

Instead of trying to convince your mind of a fact that is directly opposite to what you believe, instead you would write an affirmation that is hopeful, positive and opens your mind to accepting a new belief. The affirmation could be something like, “I am making healthy choices to improve my body” or “little by little I am changing the way I look” or “I am open to the idea of reaching my perfect weight.”

When you soften your affirmations you receive less resistance and therefore stand a much greater chance of actually changing your beliefs and improving the negative self-talk. Then as your self-image improves you can make your affirmations even more powerful. The most important thing to remember when using affirmations is to focus on how the affirmation you are using makes you feel. If when you state the affirmation you feel tension or resistance to the words then the affirmation is too far away from your present belief and needs to be softened. Also when you do this you should include hopeful words and statements like “I intent to, I am moving towards, I am reaching for, and I am open to.”

Following these simple tips will help you to write powerful focused affirmations that will change your life and you will also be more in-tune with your feelings which will in turn help you to recognize when an affirmation is right for you and when it is not.

It appears that everywhere you turn these days you cannot help but run into someone espousing the benefits of affirmations. Many of these people are very well intentioned, and some are simply riding what they believe to be a popular wave of excitement. The truth is affirmations do work, when you work them.

Affirmations are not a new idea. The history of the word can be traced back to the mid 1500s. Still today’s culture provides a fertile playground for their use and abuse. Affirmations are touted as the end all and be all of human aliments, discomforts and desires. The truth is much more subtle. Reciting an affirmation once or twice or posting in on your bathroom mirror simply does not cut it. Affirmations must become a part of your feelings and emotions. We must also determine just what feelings and emotions are. Feelings are the physical aspects of an event and your emotions are the mental reaction to those feelings. It follows that first we must create a feeling, something that moves our physical being and this will produce an emotional response. Here lies the true power of affirmations.

In order to manifest our desires, change our conditions or create a new reality for ourselves we must create an underlying sense of having already accomplished our desire. Many of us have heard or used the phrase “Fake it until you make it.” While this does in some sense hold true, I prefer to think in terms of “Know it as possible and Know it as SO.” Affirmations help us to know the possibilities. I do not believe we need fake anything. Faking it subtly implies the impossibility of something. We are working with a very subtle principle here so the more specific we are the better results we will experience. Knowing IT is possible leads us to feeling hopeful, expectant, accepting of our truth or greater yet to be. This is the real feeling we are after with affirmations, the Greater Yet To Be. We simply know our good is coming to us; there is really no way it could not. The Law of Attraction (LOA) spells all this out clearly we will get whatever we think about. Affirmations are a simple way to initiate the LOA and we must do so with a firm belief that our requests are already manifest in the mind of the Universe. Once we recognize our affirmations as possible in the Universe it is only a short path to recognizing these same affirmations as manifest in and as our body of affairs. Are you with me?

How many times have you heard “thoughts become things” or “what you think about you bring about”? These statements are very true, but can you simply think a thought once or twice and expect to experience a manifestation of that thought? Of course not, if this was true we would all be murders, divorced, or in jail. Our errant and wild thoughts do not become things because we give them very little energy. Our affirmations become reality when we give them energy. Where then does the energy come from? The energy in affirmations is repetition. How many times must a recite an affirmation for it to work? The answer is simple, as many times at it takes. I have always bee a proponent of “praying unceasingly” and this refers to praying until you see or experience the manifestation. Remember as soon as you affirm your truth the Universe begins moving that good into your life, if you give up affirming before you experience the good it is not that the universe failed to bring you your desire, it is that you must remain steadfast in your belief until your life matched the good you have been attracting. Repetition is therefore the key to manifesting our affirmations.

A good affirmation is short and easily to remember. This makes it a simple process to repeat 100 times a day. Try reciting “I am whole and complete with nothing missing in my life.” Now say that ten times. How long did it take? Now try repeating this affirmation ten times at ten different times a day. If it takes 1 or 2 minutes to repeat ten times you will invest ten or twenty minutes a day reciting this affirmation 100 times. It is a simple process to get to one hundred. The fun begins when you realize it need not be a verbal recitation to be effective. What if every time you used a restroom you silent repeated “I am whole and complete with nothing missing in my life”? Soon you will begin to feel this affirmation as the truth of your life. As you build the feeling you begin to believe this truth. As you begin to believe the Universe responds by bringing experiences that prove this as true of your life. As you begin to experience the proof of your affirmation you more easily accept and recognize the experiences of life as more proof of this truth. This self feeding cycle builds and builds until you no longer need remind yourself of your truth. Once you experience the manifestation of your affirmation you are open to moving into a new affirmation. Soon life becomes an amazing experience of Divine Truth operating as you life in every moment.

Will you slip and forget this truth? The obvious answer is yes you will, but you are not required to forget and repeat these reminders. The belief that you may forget your truth is one of those limiting beliefs that I believe no longer serve your Divine Life. Why not try affirming “I let go of any beliefs that no longer serve me and my evolution as a spiritual being.” The possibilities are endless and that’s the good news.

The truth of Affirmations is simply that they do work and they are the truth of your Divine Life if you use them. Many people today tell me they have tried affirmations and they did not work or that they worked for a short time and then they became too simplistic of a process. I ask you to consider if you are really working your affirmations or are you playing lip service to this powerful spiritual practice? The term spiritual practice is just that, a practice. We must continue to use the tools we have and practice them daily in order to master the skill.

I want you to know I recognize you as a Divine Emanation of Spirit, GOD, the Universe and you have the Power to express that Divinity in every moment. I suggest you practice reminding yourself of this truth by using affirmations unceasingly. Enjoy today and remember to affirm your truth until you see the manifestation and you will create the life you truly desire.

The New Age Thinking regarding the use of affirmations can be somewhat frivolous. The idea that you can simply think about or affirm what you want and then get it is decidedly absurd. Yet, there is no doubt that thinking is a formative force in the materialization and fabrication of our world view and the conditioned circumstances in which we exist. How we view the world, and ourselves, as we are in and of the world, determines how we act which in turn results in effects. Our current situation–all the conditions of our present life and the various contexts in which we find ourselves, is a direct result of our past, specifically how we have used language in describing ourselves, our capacities, abilities and goals all of which is a precursor for behavior which, again, is causative meaning it brings about effects.

Language is not only our tool for communication. It is also our tool for thought. We think in words as well as mental pictures. But, language is a rather crude instrument. In English, with a mere 26 letters, we codify and represent all our experience…and communicate that experience, as best we can, with language. How can 26 letters encompass not just decades but ages upon ages of experience?

Language is tricky…it’s not always easy to understand the true meaning of a word or phrase. For example “love” has many different shades of meaning. When we say we love that new restaurant down the street, is that the same as when we say we love our mother? And when we are told that we should love ourselves, what kind of love do we apply? The kind of love we have towards our pet? Our sibling? One of the most common New Age Affirmations is something along the lines of “I love myself.” What does that mean? Really? Do we love ourselves the way we love our spouse? The way we love our neighbor? We don’t do those very well, so how could we possible love ourselves any better?

Because thought, which uses language, is a formative force. Affirmations are important. What we say to ourselves, and how we say it, does have an impact upon our mind, our body and our behavior…which, being causative, brings about effects. It behooves us to consider the positive and accurate use of affirmations as part of mental health hygiene. Just as you brush your teeth twice a day, so taking a few minutes to use language and thought in such a purposeful way that the mind is imprinted with positive impressions, is healthy. And, just as toothbrushes come in different styles and choosing one that works well is a consideration, so too designing an effective and accurate affirmation takes some meditation.

There are some basic guidelines to the proper use of affirmations: relatively short, first person singular, realistic, and yet not necessarily a present reality, vividness and kinaesthetic intensity, which is feeling. An affirmation is generally no longer than a few sentences and mostly just one simple sentence. The most common beginning of the sentence is “I am” and this is actually a very good affirmation to start with. After you brush your teeth, look in the mirror and say to yourself “I am.” After you’ve done that for a couple of months consistently, you can add on to it. For example, “I Am Healthy.” Of course, exactly what “healthy” consists of is not detailed, nor should it be. The word “healthy” is associated with dozens, if not hundreds, of other words, phrases, images and feelings. It’s those associations that gives that word its meanings. As you say “I am healthy” the subconscious mind automatically conjures images of what that means. As you repeat that affirmation as if it is a mantra, the images and feelings become intensified. But, you ask, what if I am not healthy, as many people in fact are not. You can still affirm this statement. It is not a hope or a want, it can be a statement of fact…even though it may currently be a lie.

Many of the beliefs and world views we hold today were built up through repetitive use of affirmations…simple sentences…which were, at the time, untruths. But, having repeated them so often, in first person singular, with vividness and feeling, these simple statements which were not at the time realities, became so. For example, a child growing up and learning language might imitate their parent who might often say “I’m such a klutz.” The child begins to imitatively repeat this affirmation and, although not a reality at the time, can easily become one.

To affirm something in the present which is not currently a reality is not a lie. It is simply a conflict. The subjective reality of the affirmative statement, coupled with vividness and feeling, is in conflict with the objective reality of consensual agreement. As the new affirmative statements are repeated the conflict increases. During this period of conflict there may be very strong thoughts attempting to convince one that the objective consensual reality is “the truth.” By continuing on with daily affirmative statements the creative subconscious mind begins to work towards conflict resolution. One of the two “realities” must be dissolved. There is tremendous force and momentum behind the objective consensual reality. Yet with simple persistence, the new subjective affirmative reality which was in conflict with the objective consensual reality begins to take dominance. The objective consensual reality’s basis, which is nothing other than established internal, subjective, affirmative statements becomes less rigid…it begins to crack. It becomes subordinate, and diminishes, and eventually dissolves away. Objective indications of the new affirmative position begins to be noticed in the world of consensual agreement…a new personal reality begins to emerge which is also substantiated by growing objective consensual agreements.

So, you may currently be very unhealthy. That does not matter. You can still affirm “I Am Healthy.” Be warned however, that as the weeks and months pass, as the conflict between the objective consensual reality and the newly forming subjective affirmative statements increases, there may be tendencies to prove to yourself that you are unhealthy. These tendencies need not be acted upon and, like storm moving through the region, they too pass; and then you may find yourself engaging in behaviors which are more aligned with the newly forming subjective reality of being healthy. What these new behaviors are will vary from individual to individual. There is no prescription as to diet, exercise, etc. The behaviors arise from the subconscious mind which is now accepting the newly forming reality. Although some may argue that you must affirm specifics, this writer believes the more generic, the greater the chance of allowing the creative subconscious mind to organize and formulate the necessary components of that reality without undue influence from the conditioned conscious mind.

There are a number of simple, generic affirmations that can be practiced. For example, “I am competent,” “I am efficient,” I am relaxed,” are some very simple affirmative statements that if practiced regularly can impact the subconscious mind in such a way as to bring about behaviors that are in alignment with that affirmation. Here is a longer affirmation that can be useful to repeat upon awakening in the morning and upon retiring in the evening: “I am a unique person, wonderful in many ways. I am gifted with the freedom to make choices and the means to act. I live in a world of possibilities and respond with intelligence. I am alert to what is happening around me. I can communicate. I am able to reason and I can learn. I will often remember…I am a unique person, wonderful in many ways.”

Few would argue the formative power of thought. Every single tool in our culture, from a simple hammer to space shuttles was first a thought in the mind. And clearly language plays a critically important role in thinking. Sometimes crafting an appropriate and accurate affirmative statement requires some assistance by a psychological wordsmither. Ten Ways to a Greater ROI on Professional Coaching

Ten Ways to a Greater ROI on Professional Coaching

Coaching is becoming one of the leading development interventions in the corporate world. In a recent study by the Corporate Leadership Council, executives ranked coaching fourth in importance. The coaching profession has grown significantly over the last decade and many executives find it a wonderful “perk” to have a coach while other organizations find it imperative to provide their executives and key management staff with coaches. Coaching provides a customized development process for the individual as well as a confidant for the most senior level staff members. How do you, as an individual or organization seeking or using coaching, make sure you’re getting your money’s worth? Here are 10 Ways to Ensure a Greater Return On Investment from your coaching dollar.

1. Develop a standard criteria and process for selecting coaches: Many coaches are selected for engagements based on word of mouth. Develop a standard process for interviewing and selecting coaches based upon specific criteria or competencies as you would any other position.

2. Develop Service Level Expectations: Spell out the exact expectations you have of the coach such as number of meetings, length of meeting, reporting back to individuals within the organization such as the clients direct manager or HR professional, any written development plans, etc.

3. Involve the Coaching Client in the Process: The coaching engagement is a relationship between the coaching client and the coach. Making a good match is key to successful engagement. Make sure the coaching client is involved in selecting his or her own coach.

4. Link Business & Development Goals to the Coaching Engagement: Often times coaches are brought in to assist in the development of the key staff member, yet the development that is requested is not connected to the business strategy or goals. Ask, “How will the coaching, or the skill development or project support assist the company in attaining their goals?”

5. Involve the Coaching Client’s Direct Manager: The coaching client’s direct manager should be integrally involved in the coaching process with regular meetings with the coach or, even better, three way meetings between the coach, “coachee” and their direct manager to discuss progress.

6. Provide Additional Support: The coach is often not a member of the client’s organization; supplying the coaching client with a mentor or similar support can help the coaching client more effectively implement the development that is taking place with the coach.

7. Assign a person in the Organization to Manage the Coaching Process: Frequently, centralizing the requests for and selection of coaches can streamline the process. It can also ensure that coaching is being used where it’s the most effective intervention and that the coaches selected are appropriate for the assignment.

8. Develop Measurable Goals: If the coaching objectives are not identified prior to the engagement, ensure that the coach and coaching client develop measurable goals. How will you know if the engagement is successful? Some of the outcomes of coaching may difficult to measure but going through the exercise will greatly increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the coaching engagement.

9. Develop Coaching Plans: Ensure that the coach and the coaching client develop a detailed plan to achieve the goals that are developed. The coach often works “in the moment” but a plan of action or outline, to help the client get from point A to point B will lead to greater success.

10. Measure the Impact of the Coaching: It’s often hard to actually measure quantitatively the impact of coaching. There are often many variables going on in the business at the same time. Where it is feasible make an effort to measure the return on the coaching. Some measurements might include employee satisfaction, turnover rates, process times, increased sales, etc. as well as measuring qualitative data such as how the individual felt about the coaching, did they achieve the objectives, what value does the coaching client put on the coaching experience, to name a few.

Some of the greatest business leaders in the economy are advocates for professional/executive coaching. In some studies coaching has documented to provide anywhere from 500 – 1000% return on the investment. With those kinds of results coaching will continue to be a highly requested development tool. Putting in place the actions and processes to get a consistent value for your coaching dollar will continue to be a key to it’s success!

Affirmations get a bad rap by many in the areas of personal growth and development, and at the same time by others are touted as the magic to changing your life. There are those who tell you that using affirmations is THE way to changing your thinking thus changing your life, and others who say they are a useless waste of time.

Here I will attempt to clarify and set straight the place and value of affirmations in your self improvement efforts to change and grow in your life. The topic of affirmations fits into what I call “A fine line.” There is a fine line between going too far one way or the other. To get the value from something you must find the “fine line” place in the middle, too far one way or the other, and you loose it. And so it is with affirmations.

First, some of the misconception comes from people grasping for the quick fix. We all know how we can easily read into something what we want. And that what most people are looking for is the quickest, easiest way to make changes in their life, which does really not exist.

All related factors must be addressed to realize real results. Affirmations do play a role in your overall self development and growth but are certainly not the only tool that must be used to get the results you want. Affirmations alone will not bring about the major change in life some believe, on the other hand they are not totally worthless as many others make them out to be.

Much of what is taught in the personal growth and development field is just part of the story. Where someone has focused on one or even a few aspects of what is involved and highlighting just those parts, which gives the impression that, that is all there is. Yes, in short change it is simple, but there are many ‘between the lines’ aspects that come into play, and one of these is affirmations.

It’s easy to allow ourselves to get consumed with one aspect of life development when our focus is on just one element, which is the case with many books and trainings. It is good to study and focus on one aspect if this is something specifically you feel you need to learn and user, but don’t forget about the whole picture.

Now those who say that just using affirmations will fix your life, seem to ‘forget’ about the aspects of action, among other things, which we can’t escape as we are in this physical reality. Yes, your thoughts and your feelings play a crucial role in how you manage and develop your life, but that’s not all. You must take appropriate actions, it’s your job, your design here in this physical reality we enjoy. If we weren’t suppose to be involved physically why are we here?

And, those who say affirmations are worthless are missing out on a powerful tool that has some purpose when one is working on their thinking. And, yes, your thinking is absolutely critical as everything revolves around it. I think why some people look down on the use of affirmations comes from their reaction to others who say that affirmations are all you need. But this all or nothing reaction does not serve anyone well.

Here are some ways that affirmations are useful in your self improvement work:

* Affirmations help set your tone. Your overall attitude and feeling will affect what you think about. It affects how you act and interact with others. It virtually colors your day. Using affirmations will help direct your daily tone.

* Affirmations help keep your thinking positive – on what you want and away from what you don’t want. If affirmations serve no other purpose for you than this, it makes them well worth using, if all you do is use affirmations to replace unwanted thinking with desirable thinking you have won big. A critical part of change is to learn to stop focusing on what you don’t want and rather focus on what you do want.

* Affirmations help build mental discipline. As you learn affirmations and actually use them regularly, you are training your mind to a different way of thinking on a daily basis. You are learning how you can change your thought and how to keep it as you want. You are learning to take command of your thinking by directing it rather than allowing everything to be automatic.

* Affirmations help evolve your thinking in the direction you want. As you develop affirmations for yourself, you are thinking about and expanding your thinking in the areas that you want to play a greater role in your life. The more you work with developing affirmative and supportive statements, the more you will discover what is possible.

Now, maybe if your thinking is already 100% supportive of what you want in life, where you are going, and you never slip into any thought of doubt, worry and what you don’t like, you don’t need affirmations. Actually if this is the case, you have already assimilated the affirmation like thought into your everyday thinking. Your conscious mind is already always on the positive, supportive congruent thoughts of your ideal life as it is freely unfolding. For anyone else, affirmations can be a useful tool.

Affirmations are a wonderful tool for effecting your thinking, which is very important in your growth and development, as long as you don’t get stuck thinking that this is all you need to do. It takes more than just your thoughts to see results, but developing your thinking is key to your knowing the right actions to take, when and how to get the results you want.

I hear of so many people using affirmations as the universal remedy for everything that ails them. They wake up in the morning and verbalize their affirmations. They go through their days verbalizing positive statements about situations and their lives. Then, they go to bed saying their affirmations like bed-time prayers.

I tried reciting affirmations for a while, but never quite understood how stating that ‘I choose to be rich’ would have any effect on my life as long as I sat in front of the television with a bag of chips. The problem was that, I wasn’t doing anything to give the affirmations a basis from which to operate. While an affirmation might have made me feel good, it certainly didn’t create the situations I needed to reach my goals.

If ‘affirmations’ are positive messages to my brain, to retrain it, and to the Universe, to let it know where you choose to be, then planned ‘actions’ provide a basis of reality on which the affirmations would function. This is where I began applying affirm-actions in my life.

— Positive Words —

For many years, affirmations have been considered the solution for many of life’s issues. Confidence, success, and power have claimed to have been gained through daily affirmations. But, many people with whom I’ve spoken say that affirmations do absolutely nothing for them. The problem lies in the fact that you must align your life such that the affirmations can ring true.

The core problem with repeating affirmations to ourselves is that, unless our conscious mind feels that the affirmations are true, it will not process the positive statements. Our conscious mind intercepts the information we are receiving, and filters unrealistic messages, or messages that contradict our belief systems, from the subconscious mind.

Have you ever repeated, as we’ve been taught, sometimes for months and even years on end, the simple sentence, ‘I choose to be wealthy’? Even though it might have made you feel good, were you actually wealthy, or did you become wealthy, at any time? For most people, the answer is ‘No’.

The reason is that your conscious mind was filtering that message as a lie. The conscious mind takes that information, wretches your ‘gut’, and echoes back, ‘Look around! Wake up!’ The good words were not even making it to the subconscious mind where it counts. As long as your conscious mind filters your affirmations as lies, then there is no amount of present tense affirming that can change what ‘you are’ into what ‘you are not.’

— Mixing Words with Actions —

To resolve this problem, you have to do two things: make a plan and change the wording of your affirmations. You not only have to have your subconscious mind involved to actively process your desires, but you also have to give your conscious mind a way to accept the ‘misconceptions’ of the affirmations. Instead of lying to yourself, make a plan and execute actions that support your affirmations. This is where affirm-actions come into play.

You must first make a solid plan that defines your vision, mission, and goals. This plan takes into consideration where you are and how to reach your vision. By making a plan and believing in the plan, you are empowering your conscious and subconscious mind with a weapon to overcome the negative feelings and beliefs that you currently have buried in your mind. This approach will open the channels of communications for your affirmations to make it into your mind.

The second part of the solution is to change the wording of your affirmations. You have to convince your conscious brain to process the misconceptions of the affirmations as truths. Since your conscious brain will filter out lies, you have to word the affirmations in such a way that it will appear as a ‘possibility.’ For instance, instead of saying ‘I choose to be wealthy’ or ‘I am wealthy,’ reword it to say ‘I will be wealthy.’ This is actually converting the ‘lie’ into a command to tell your brain where your plan is leading you.

As you can see, an affirm-action is a more assertive form of affirmation. Essentially, you are converting a baseless affirmation to one that is a possibility simply by associating it with an action. The affirmations then become factual, positive statements that ‘remind’ you of my vision and inform the universe that this is the direction you choose to go.

— What’s next? —

Positive words alone cannot change a world—your world. But, words combined with action can materialize a future of which, at one time, you could only dream.

The purpose of an affirm-action is not to try to convince yourself that you are something that you are not. It is not there to falsify your future or alter the things of the past. It is a way of using your experiences through an intelligent plan and reminding yourself why you’re working so hard along a given path to reach your vision. You are claiming your vision of the future, telling the universe that this is what you want, and going after it.

By combining actions with words, you are initiating a plan to show your conscious mind that you are indeed heading in the direction of your desires. When you begin using your affirmations, in conjunction with the actions, your desires are now making it past your conscious mind into the subconscious mind where it will be of greater use. This is where the soul can get an idea of what you’re doing and will help you get there.

Why the London Riots Created a Greater Business Travel Threat Than a Terrorist Attack

Why the London Riots Created a Greater Business Travel Threat Than a Terrorist Attack

Introduction to the London riots threat

If you have business travel to London, you need to read this article. In this article you will discover why the London riots created a greater travel threat than a terrorist attack. We will examine the threat posed by the London riots and demonstrations, terrorist attacks and resulting travel delays, disruptions and changes. At the end of this article, you will have a specific understanding of the required business travel management response and awareness as to why this will happen again.

The London riots and demonstrations has resulted in one of the largest business travel disruptions of 2011.

London Riots and Demonstrations

The London riots and demonstrations have come as a complete surprise to many. It is not a unique event and certainly not unique to the UK. The scale, violence, fire and failure of the authorities is often something expected in other countries but the lack of preparedness for destinations like the UK is common and widespread. Therefore, the lack of preparedness and last-minute scramble to respond and the inability to avoid major business travel disruptions are widespread as a result.

Due to the footprint of disruption, many routes and modes of transport have been negatively affected. Simple commute from the airport, trains and ports to planned accommodation options have been altered and continuous review of hazard or threat assessment are required. Furthermore, travel support providers such as taxis, hotels, restaurants, emergency services an other basic amenities have also been affected, to varying degrees.

Travel and risk managers need to immediately identify:

Affected areas,

Degree of threat,

Affected and exposed (inbound and outbound) business travellers,

Arrival/departure points,

Safe and non-affected areas,

Mitigation or eradication options,

Cost of implementation,

Funds available,

Emergency support,

Accommodation options,

On-going or developing events,

Social or non-business activity,

Insurance claims and compliance requirements,

Cancellation criteria,

Resumption of travel criteria,

Extended event plans,

Travel alternatives (domestic and international)

The London riots have affected multiple support systems related to business and leisure travel. Any leisure travel disruptions will further compound business travel threats such as decreased accommodation options, airport congestion and increased public transport demand. Even simple actions like withdrawing money from an ATM will prove a challenge and compound the hazard/s.

The London riots have had a prolonged affect on UK business travel sector, far greater than the majority of terrorist attacks. Further affects such as planning and preparation for the 2012 Olympics will also contribute to the lingering affects.

A lack of planning and subsequent response capability by businesses could constitute a failure of duty of care, due diligence, corporate social responsibility, workplace health and safety or other related legislation.

Terrorist attacks less of a threat than London riots

With the exception of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, most have limited travel disruption and only affect a narrow band of travellers. Inclusive of the Mumbai terror attack, terrorist attacks typically have clearly defined threat elements (terrorist, bombings, gunfire, etc) whereas the London riots is a constantly changing and unclear threat. Most business travellers will be unprepared for such decision-making demands and lack sufficient experience to make consistent and safe decisions.

Most contemporary business risk management systems focus on location and plausible event threats, then seek to inform or prepare travellers for the best results to mitigate or eliminate the hazards and threats. Therefore, the bulk of business travellers will not be prepared or educated on how to respond in London, with such wide spread disruption and threats. Few will have residual knowledge from information and preparation for such events in other locations, considered more likely to be medium to high risk. Many of the supporting business travel management departments and managers will be equally unprepared and resourced.

A terrorist attack and other similar violent crimes would have a much smaller footprint of disruption, not affected such a wide business travel demographic, not affect business travel support providers so comprehensively or have such a prolonged impact on all exposed.

Routine travel delays, disruptions and changes represent one of the most persistent and probable travel risk management issues.

Travel delay, disruption and changes

Change management and the decision-making involved is one of the most commonly accepted workplace hazard concerns. This is equally relevant to business travel and business travel threats.

The instinctive and guided response of travellers to any delay, disruption or change can significantly affect the outcome of any spontaneous or new hazard as it presents. Particularly when this is the first level of response, before support options and resources can be activated or come into affect.

Travel delays have been triggered due to airport and airline workers unable to get to work, taxi drivers not able to refuel vehicles, hotels and staff overwhelmed, business travellers unprepared and convergence of business and leisure travellers upon all available exit travel nodes.

Access to information, at all levels, the ability to consume and process all the options and explore alternatives is imperative in this and similar travel disruption events. Crisis leadership will succeed more frequently than simple crisis management, to which are dependent upon timely and accurate information from all available resources.

Unfortunately, many will fail to fully understand the gravity of the events, the threats posed and respond or prepare accordingly. While many others exposed will chalk it up to another force majeure or random act that is just part of the rich experience of international travel. Courts, business travellers and peer review increasingly do not share this flippant view.

This scenario and lack of preparedness has been played out numerous times in recent history. Volcanos, volcanic ash affects, Japan’s tsunami, airport closures, airline failure and many others have caught business travellers and managers alike unprepared. This disturbing trend will continue.

Conclusion: London riots threat

You should now see why the London riots have a far greater impact and threat to travellers than you may have originally thought. We have examined the business travel threat posed by the London riots, terrorist attacks and resulting travel delays. You now have a specific plan for this and similar events and the required business travel management and response. This will happen again. Perhaps not in London, perhaps not a city wide demonstration but this kind and scale of business travel disruption event will happen more than once before the end of 2011. Review your plan and make the necessary enhancements now.
