5 Of the Greatest Housecleaning Tips and Tools To Maximize Your Time
It is important for many reasons to keep our home in good condition. I’m sure I don’t need to list all the reason, but here are a few: it affects the resale value, it keeps you healthier, you train your children to have good character… and I’m sure you have other reasons of your own. You are looking at this article because you have the character to take care of what God has given you and the desire to improve your skills at doing just that. Here are five great household cleaning tips and tools to maximize your time and effort.
This is a funny- looking, but fun and quick way to dust. Get a pair of clean cotton socks, wet them, and put one on each hand. As you pick an item up, you wipe it down and wipe the surface it was sitting on with the other hand. What a timesaver! Instead of following the traditional way of taking everything off a shelf or bookcase, you simply pick it up and swipe. When you follow a regular routine of this method of dusting you don’t need to use cleaners. It’s definitely less expensive and your items and surfaces won’t be damaged over time by harsh cleaners.
Some places are very difficult to reach when dusting. Who pulls out their refrigerator every week to dust behind it? Not me, but it is a place not to be neglected. Dusting behind and underneath the fridge will keep it running longer and more efficiently. So, grab a yardstick and duct tape a sock over the end of it. You can also just wet the sock, or maybe use a little dish detergent and clean away. Again, doing this on a regular basis will keep the dust and dirt from building up and you won’t need any kind of chemical agent. Just throw your sock in the laundry and have it ready for the next time. Small sponge paintbrushes are good for cleaning awkward areas as well because the hold plenty of soap and water.
There are three different types of brushes that you should add to your cleaning tool kit. An old men’s shaving brush is great for dusting sensitive surfaces like antiques. It is stiff enough to get into small cracks and crevices, but soft enough to not scratch or cause other damage. A baby bottle brush is ideal for cleaning things like lidless kettles or thermoses. Sometimes a child’s sippy cup or a reusable water bottle need this time of brush, which usually has a small bristle brush on one end and a larger one on the opposite end. Thirdly, purchase a separate toilet brush that you can use to clean those out of reach places and your back will thank you for it.
Take some of your wash cloths that you use for dishes and pans and sew a plastic button on the corner of each one. When you come across some dried on food, use the button to scrape it off. It won’t scratch the surfaces of your cookware and it will save you time and effort in the scrubbing. This is especially fun for children and you know your pans won’t be losing their special coating!
Finally, for cleaning and rinsing your bathtub, here is a great combination. Sprinkle baking soda instead of an expensive and harsh chemical. It works extremely well and doesn’t scratch (it’s also what I use for the kitchen sink). Purchase an inexpensive plastic garden watering can the next time you see gardening supplies and use it to rinse the tub.
These five cleaning tips are a great way to maximize your effort in cleaning. But, you have to plan your time and implement them on a consistent basis. Schedule your cleaning every month. You will feel wonderful when you check it off your list. Instead of apologizing, you will feel great when someone just “stops by” for a visit. Your appliances and furnishings will last longer and you will certainly reduce allergens and germs by keeping your home as clean as possible. Get started today!
