Book Promotion and Book Marketing With Online Book Reviews

Book Promotion and Book Marketing With Online Book Reviews

Book promotion used to be all about book tours and book reviews in print media. These days the reviews that count are not all in the print media. They’re mostly on online bookstores, especially the Amazon bookstore community.

Amazon has become so powerful that authors will invest scarce resources to get reviewed there. Many authors have false beliefs about what it takes to get an online book review. It’s actually quite simple and straightforward.

As a prolific reviewer and a published author, I have experienced the process and have some tips to share with authors who want to make online reviews a key part of their book promotion.

First, I am horrified to learn that authors pay freelancers and agencies to write reviews for them. This is a huge waste of money. Instead, use your budget to send review copies to the most prolific reviewers in your genre. Read the reviewer’s past reviews to discover his or her tastes. For example, if you have a book on parenting newborn babies, look at other books on this topic. Notice which reviewers seem genuinely interested. They’ll probably be happy to review your book, too.

Anyway, one or two great reviews will not save your book. Even if one or two reviewers think your book ranks up there with War and Peace and the top-selling Stephen King novel, they can’t save your book. It’s the cumulative ratings that create viral marketing for your book.

Do not ask reviewers to write a review based on one chapter or a pdf version of the book. Send a hard copy of the whole book.

Once a reviewer agrees to consider reviewing your book, move on to your next marketing step. Do not hound the reviewer. Most prolific reviewers have backlog of books in the “To Review” pile. Some reviewers will choose not to review a book (especially one from a self-published author or small press) if they don’t like the book. They reason that it’s going nowhere,so why add to the author’s pain?

And you cannot complain about your review. Believe it or not, the most convincing reviews are balanced. The puffy reviews are not taken seriously. Online readers are smart and their authenticity radar is finely-tuned.

Do not spend a lot of money on packaging. Skip the gold wrapping paper, ribbons and glossy flyers. I can’t imagine how they would influence a reviewer.

In fact, the best way to get a handful of 4-star and 5-star reviews is to (drum roll, please!) write a good book. Nothing will compensate for a bad book, even if you somehow convince your friends and family to write glowing reviews. The online book community will pick up vibes from those reviews and you may be worse off. Readers actually complain, “The first 20 reviews look like they came from the author’s mother.”

You may be able to blast your way to best seller status with a big campaign. But you won’t get authentic five-star reviews unless your book truly earns them.

Building Marketing Momentum For Your Small Business

Building Marketing Momentum For Your Small Business

The success of your business depends on your ability to build marketing momentum. Without the ability to generate new sources of leads your capacity to sell will slump and the growth of your business will stagnate or shrink.

Unfortunately, many small business owners are at a loss when tasked with coming up with new ways to market while others are frustrated into stagnation by seeing consistently ineffective results from their marketing efforts. It doesn’t matter if your business is young or established. If your business is young you must market well simply to survive. On the other hand, if you have had marketing success with a method that does not increase your opportunity to generate new business your success will be stunted by your limited ability to find new sources of business.

Building marketing momentum is like kicking a ball down a hill that keeps getting steeper. Each time the hill becomes a little steeper the ball will roll faster and pick up momentum. In marketing, any tactic you add to attract attention to what you do is like making the hill a little steeper.

The other day I was talking to Ed who runs a successful metal shining business. I asked him how he went about generating new sales. He told me that 100% of his marketing effort is networking. I couldn’t help but wonder why. I realize that he is doing well with it but if he simply placed an ad in the yellow pages that generated just one sale a year he would cover the cost of the ad and be profitable!

Even though Ed’s networking efforts are successful he is limiting his ability to grow his business by only implementing one form of marketing. By simply trying something new in addition to networking Ed can benefit from developing a new way to generate leads and build his marketing momentum.

Is your marketing effort one dimensional or stagnant? Here are five tactics you can use to build marketing momentum.

Deliver a Great Marketing Message

A great marketing message will have the effect of generating interest in what you do. It never ceases to amaze me the number of small business owners that fail to use a compelling marketing message. How many times has someone described to you their business or what they do with a label like, “I’m an accountant” or “I’m in Communications”? Such answers are not likely to start interesting conversations and marketing opportunities are missed.

If you answer the “what do you do?” question with a savvy marketing message you will find that more people associate what you do with a need of their own or that of a friend, colleague or relative and you will win more referral business. Develop and use an outstanding, compelling marketing message and you will find that more people show interest in what you do. The result will be more better sales.

Make Cold Calling a Hot Source of Sales

Many small business owners hate to make cold calls. Their derision is understandable. By making cold calls they are setting themselves up for rejection. No one likes being rejected. However, rejection is part of the game when making phone calls. Once you realize that it’s not your fault when someone says no during a cold call you can move passed your barrier and add cold calling to your marketing arsenal.

The fact is that by regularly picking up the phone and reaching out to potential clients small business owners increase their chance of finding new business. A percentage of the people you speak with will become clients when you make cold calls, especially if you are targeting your market well and are offering something they need. What’s more you can work to improve your phone skills to increase your ability to make sales. Add cold calling to your marketing strategy and you will increase your opportunity to generate new business.

Use Your Web Site as An Effective Marketing Tool

Many companies have web sites that fail as effective marketing tools. Does your web site consistently generate leads and sales? It should. And it can. The World Wide Web is a continuously open marketplace that reaches hundreds of millions of consumers every moment of every day and allows you to easily and accurately target those who buy your products or services. A company without a web site as part of its marketing team is missing a fantastic opportunity to increase its revenue stream. Deliver a web site that functions as an effective marketing tool and you will consistently add to your marketing momentum.

Develop Your Network

Another great tool to use to build marketing momentum is networking. Networking is a highly effective means of generating referral business (which is some of the easiest business to get, once you get a referral). A person who is willing to take someone else’s advice to contact you about your product or service will transfer the trust he has in his friend or colleague making the referral to you. Making it easier for clients to trust you removes one of the barriers to making a sale. By developing a robust network you will increase your ability to find new prospects and do more business.

So then, just how should you go about building your network?

Ed, from our previous example, is able to successfully operate his business with networking alone. That’s because Ed networks the right way. Many small business owners and executives don’t realize what networking truly is. Unfortunately, all too often people think they are networking by reaching out only to the people they know when what they should be doing is taking steps to continually expand their network. Ed regularly attends networking events and is involved with multiple networking groups. He ads new people to his network all the time and has a successful business to show for it (though he could be even more successful if he added another tool to his marketing toolbox).

Measure Your Results

No matter what tactics you adapt to market yourself or your business be sure to measure your results. By measuring your marketing results you will be able to move away from or correct what does not work and stick with and reinforce what does. By diligently measuring your results you will improve your ability to ad to your marketing momentum and grow your business and success.

By measuring my results and trying new things I have been able to develop an ad that enjoys a 20% response rate. The ad is so successful I only need to run it occasionally to generate enough calls to keep me very busy. Not only does this great ad do a fantastic job of generating interest in my marketing services it saves me money on my advertising costs because I can meet my goals by running fewer ads.

You too can develop highly effective ads by measuring your results.

Move Your Marketing Forward

If your marketing efforts aren’t helping you reach your goals you can improve your results by implementing any one of the tactics outlined above. Choose the one you feel most comfortable with and take small measured steps toward realistic goals and you will see a beneficial transformation in your marketing results.

Why Book Reviews Are So Important to Book Marketing

Why Book Reviews Are So Important to Book Marketing

Book reviews are not only important to book marketing, but they are crucial, especially when it comes to self published book marketing. Most writers should do whatever they can do to get favorable self published book reviews in order to promote their writing.

Most book reviewers write for a living. They work freelance at this type of job, read books and write about them professionally. They know how to write about a book without giving away an ending or too much about the plot. Good book reviews should leave the reader wanting to read more, they should give a reader a glimpse into the writing that can help the reader make a decision as to whether or not they want to buy the tome.

If a writer has a self published book, it can be difficult to get a writer to write a review. Not so if the writer sends the work to a book review service. A book review company can allow for the writer to be heard in that someone will read the work and write a professional review about it. Some services will allow for more than one review to be written about the work. And these are important as many people base their decision on whether or not to buy the book on the reviews. If a novel comes highly recommended by reviewers, it is much more likely to sell than one that no one has ever heard about.

It is in the best interest of any writer to see to it that their book is reviewed by professional book reviewers and is given a proper notice as this can be vital to the success of a book. Using a book review service is a good idea, especially in the case of a self published author as they will not have a good chance of getting a professional writer to look at their work without using this type of service. Book reviews are the way that the public gets to know if the novel or writing is something that will interest them. They should not be a sales pitch for the writing, but should just discuss the plot of the book, the writing style used by the writer and the strengths of the book for the reader. It will then be up to the reader to decide on whether or not to read this novel, based upon what is said in book reviews.

The Benefits of Using a Book Review Service For Your Book Marketing

The Benefits of Using a Book Review Service For Your Book Marketing

The primary goal for a book review service is to see you succeed as an author and provide honest, professional book reviews for their clients. This service is just another avenue for the author, publicist, publisher, or literary agent to successfully market your book to its fullest potential. It’s important for authors to get as many reviews as possible for their book. A review is not only a great way to promote your text, or ms; it is also a very effective way. It helps potential readers understand your text and gives good reasons why they should purchase your it. Reviews are very affordable, especially given the exposure that you receive from them.

Many different types of books are sold online, via the Internet. Of course the Internet is a great way to advertise. When a company reviews your text, most creditable and reputable review companies also will place the review on their website once they have completed the review. The potential customers will have the ability to purchase the text on that particular review website. This is another portal for selling your book, and having a link to your website increases web traffic. In addition, some review companies will post your reviews in multiple places, such as Amazon, or Barnes & Noble and many other places to help you get the desired exposure that your book needs.

These days it is very important for the author to be “Hands on” throughout the marketing process. This is really expected from the publishing industry. Having a book review is a very affordable way to market your book on a grander scale. You should include all of your book reviews in all of your press releases. Also it’s strongly recommended that you include your reviews in all of your book signings that you plan. You should have the review on display as a billboard, poster, or handout. This will give your book more credibility and deliver optimum authority.

Using Animation For Effective Marketing

Using Animation For Effective Marketing

Over the last couple of decades the face of marketing has changed drastically. About a decade ago marketing underwent another transformation. Where paper advertisements and radio spots used to be, the internet has stepped in to become one of the most widely used advertising and marketing tools throughout the world. Currently more people are using the internet to dig up reviews, information, and products than ever before and the amount of potential clients you can reach is growing daily. With this being the case, how can you make your site, product, or company stand out from the thousands of websites available to be memorable in a client’s mind? This is where animation steps in.

A website complete with tasteful flash animations, informational videos, and interactive content allows visitors to engage with your site and remain there longer to discover more about your company. While a static website is the bare minimum for any business these days, it isn’t enough to win out over a competitor who took the time to include an animation or two on their site. What is needed now is an aesthetically designed, visually appealing, and easy to navigate user interface that will provide a memorable and positive user experience.

Some forms of animation that are used to demonstrate an idea or illustrate a concept and which capture a visitor’s interest are:

• 2D Animation

• 3D Character Animation

• 3D Modeling & Product Design

• 3D Walkthrough Animation

• 3D Mobile, Online and PC Games

Using one of these forms of animation in a short, tasteful, and informative manner can let your visitors get a snapshot of your company before they decide to explore further. This is very similar to the teaser trailer of a movie. You put your best foot forward and from that impression you entice a movie-goer to see your movie weeks or even months later because it impacted their desires and engaged their interest. Using this same analogy we can take it one step further. The visitor watches the trailer (your animation), then decides to read the full plot summary (your text), then they look to find out when and where the movie is playing (your company information), following that they go to see the movie (purchase your product or service). By including an animation on your page you have just moved a visitor to your website into a client for your company. Your animation gave you that leg up on the competition who decided to leave the animation out of their site. In summary the advantages of animation are:

• more visual appeal

• lasting impression

• greater product understanding

• preference is given by all major search engines to sites with animation

Properly conceived and executed animations have no disadvantages. However, if an animation is poorly done, the impact on your website can be severe. Silly animations on a professional site decrease the company’s image, reliability, and value. Similarly, animations inappropriate for the intended audience can cause a perpetual block on your website and may even offend some visitors. It is for these reasons that you need to meet with a professional web design firm who can work with you to develop an audience appropriate, company mindful animation that can help influence each visitor to decide on your company.

Successful Marketing for Home Based Businesses

Successful Marketing for Home Based Businesses

‘A successful marketing strategy is not based on doing what you like but liking what you do…’

Are you looking for information to build and grow a home-based business? If so, you are in the right place! Here you will find information on implementing a successful marketing campaign and growing your home based business.

The Problem

Many home-based business owners don’t know how to best market their businesses. Some ignore marketing altogether, hoping that customers or website visitors will appear out of thin air. Others market in a scattershot way producing untargeted traffic or unqualified prospects. Either approach will keep you from achieving your business potential and reaching your financial goals and possibly even damage your reputation.

The Solution

Whether you’ve been thinking about starting a home business or you’re already a seasoned home-based business owner, the principle remains the same. Your business’ survival and success rests on how effectively you market your business or product. Examine some of the following marketing strategies and tools to help you boost your home based business profits.

Home-Based Business Advantage

Low overhead costs, no commute to work and the ability to work around your children are some of the few advantages for home based business owners. Gear your marketing efforts to capitalize on these and other home-based strengths including:

Adaptability – Information Technology has escalated the rate of change in the marketplace. To survive and thrive, you must be prepared to act, and act quickly. As a home-based business owner, you can make adjustments instantly, without having to cut through the red tape of bureaucratic decision-making procedures common in larger businesses.

Technology – Computers, the Internet, PDA’s, and other emerging technologies can take home based businesses to a more level playing field with bigger companies, empowering home based business owners to accomplish tasks that used to require hiring staff to perform. Try to keep up-to-speed with technology.

Flexibility. – Unlike traditional businesses that require full-time attention and high overhead costs, home based businesses can be operated part-time, at low cost, and depending on your financial goals can be phased into full-time operations.

Taking Your Business To The Next Level

A common reason home businesses fail is because owners neglect the up-front planning needed to position their ventures. Once you have defined your market position and where you want to take your business in the 12 months you will have moved one step closer to success.

If you already have a business begin by taking inventory of where your business is right now. What specific goods and services do you provide? How do you set yourself apart? What is your business’ reputation? How are you perceived by your customers or clients as far as your prices, reliability, and other elements of your products or services?

The next step is to project where you want to take your business in the 12 months. What market position do you want to occupy? Is the niche market you want large enough? How will your benefits outsell those provided by the competition? Do you have the ability, capital, resources and support to make your market position a reality? Your answers will give you the information you need to begin designing or updating your marketing plan.

Planning Ahead

Once you have determined where you want to go, outline the essential steps to get there. Begin by writing a one sentence purpose (mission) statement for your marketing campaign. The rest of your plan should include a brief description of each of the following:

Benefits of your products and services.

Your target market.

What marketing tools will best help you achieve your mission.

Your market niche. What sets you apart in the market place.

Your marketing budget.

Keep your marketing plan brief. The more concise you make your marketing plan, the more effective it will be in evaluating your marketing efforts.

Finding Your Niche

This is often the hardest task for a beginning home-based business owner but also one of the most crucial. In order for your venture to survive in a competitive marketplace, you must distinguish yourself from other businesses and find a niche. What makes your business unique? Why should someone choose to buy from you over a competitor? Prospective clients want to know. If you can give them a compelling answer, you will position yourself as a leader in your industry boosting your profit potential. Research your market thoroughly before jumping in.

Marketing Tools

No matter how you choose to publicize your business, one quality will set you apart from your competitors: The ability to write effective ad copy. You’re vying for the attention of consumers bombarded each day with advertisements. It is estimated that the average person is exposed to over 1,200 advertising messages per DAY! Make sure your advertisement stands out from the rest of this ‘noise’.

When you have determined your market position and drawn up a marketing plan you are ready to start spreading the word about your products and services. One effective way is using the existing offline media in your area. You have a variety of media choices depending upon your target market and your advertising budget including magazines, newspapers, television, radio, and the internet. Start by evaluating how and where your competitors advertise. What’s working for them? Take their best ideas; then design your own winning layout, positioning yourself as having the best offer.

The Importance of Headlines

As the first phrases seen in advertising copy, headlines should arouse enough interest in the reader so that they will want to read or listen on to learn more about your business or product. To get ideas about what headlines will work best for you, scan different types of ad copy, particularly those from your competitors. Create a swipe file of different ads and ideas that you come across from different sources. But remember to be careful of using other peoples copyrighted material.

Capture your customer’s interest with a compelling statement of offer

Highlight the most important benefits

Offer extreme value

Make a call strong call to action.

Testing Your Ads

Advertising can be expensive, but for just about any business a mandatory investment. To get the most out of your ads, test them by the following criteria:

What is the quantity of leads or prospects that the ad generates? Compare this amount in terms of a unit cost of advertising (dollars in advertising per leads generated).

How many of these leads convert into sales? Different advertising media due to the audiences they target will vary in the numbers of actual closes.

Continually check the response from your ads, make changes or run a new ad if necessary. Use ad trackers and keep testing, testing testing until you achieve the response required.

Internet Marketing

Imagine! You can have a salesperson working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week even while you sleep. A web site and effective use of e-mail marketing can turn your small home-based business into a global business putting you on a level playing field with large corporations. With easy and afforbable web design tools getting a web site up and running is within reach of everybody.

Sell Benefits Not Features!

Any seasoned business owner knows that it costs five times more to sell to a new prospect than to an existing client. Studies show that each satisfied customer will spread the good word about your business to at least one other person. On the reverse side of the coin a dissatisfied customer will complain to up to five or ten potential customers. Your mission in getting customer referrals to turn passive satisfied customers into actively enthusiastic supporters who will promote your business. The best way to do this is through:

Offering outstanding value to your customers

Delivering your product on time.

Solving customer’s problems.

Maintaining regular contact with customers through feedback forms

Following up your customers regularly.

Creating long-term relationships with customers.

Personalising your product or service.

Finally…

Whether you’re just launching your home based business or have been building one for years, don’t allow lack of information keep you from achieving your financial dreams. Study your marketing options and decide which marketing strategy will best position you for long-term success.

Start Your Own Internet Business – Online Marketing Success for You As A Marketer

Start Your Own Internet Business – Online Marketing Success for You As A Marketer

Before you buy one more internet training, or listen to one more teleseminar where they show you yet another way to earn a million dollars in the next 3 months! Stop… stop the insanity and evaluate exactly where you are and what you really need to do to get to the next level. Stop digging.

My name is Glenda Millette and I am a newbie…an internet newbie, to top that off a non-technical newbie! That’s like being hired to be a mechanic and not understanding how to change the oil. But the good thing is that there is hope for all of us newbies.

I believe that the first level of being a newbie is the greenhorn stage. Some other words for greenhorn are a novice, or a raw recruit, tenderfoot or beginner. I personally like the phrase raw recruit that is what the first year of the internet experience felt like for me. I was pretty well beaten up.

I had been a successful business woman working in the Interior Design Industry. I saw myself as a smart, self sufficient, intelligent woman. I thought it would be easy to switch from marketing myself the way I had been for the last 25 years to simply doing it a different way on the internet. After all I heard many stories of people making a lot of money on the internet.

I had a dream to teach more people how to use principles of design especially how to pick and use color in their homes. I wanted the ability to work virtually anywhere in the world and make unlimited income (the harder I worked the more money I made). The internet seemed to fit the bill.

In 2008 I started my business, and the first thing I did was to buy an expensive training course from a very successful and well know marketer. The information was good, but so far over my head that I was lost as soon as I opened the package and took the training manual out.

I was such a greenhorn that I thought I could make it work, after all if I hired the correct people to help me anything was possible. I hired a couple local webmasters; they had about as much understanding of this program as I did. They gladly took fifteen hundred dollars of my money to set up this site the way the highly successful marketer said it should be set up. It took three weeks and then I was up and rolling!

When I opened the site the next morning I had thousands, yes thousands of hits from Oprah. Two hours into the second day the hosting company closed down my account, and called me. They were not very happy. My webmasters had screwed up the site so badly it was impossible to fix and the hosting company said my business was not something they wanted anyway.

I didn’t stop there if throwing away $3,000 in the first 3 months didn’t work, then I must spend more money and get more training, and more training and more money spent. You get the picture within 6 months I was so confused, spend several thousands and felt so bad about myself not being able to do this business I quit.

Thank goodness that was not the “end of the story”. I found out how to get clarity and understanding about how to do this business, using simple and easy steps, finding great teachers along the way. My blog will chronicle the steps to do an internet business from start to success online.

Automotive Direct Mail Marketing – A Proven Approach to Marketing

Automotive direct mail is one of the most commonly read types of direct mail. In fact, an article by DM News cites a survey showing that 73% of car buyers respond to direct mail.

Why do so many auto dealers and manufactures use direct mail marketing?

1. Direct Mail is Cost-Effective

Automotive direct mail campaigns can be shaped around any marketing budget. Direct mail can be as simple as a 4″ x 6″ postcard, or as complex as multi-part letter kit. The smart automotive marketer can use the more affordable pieces for lead generation, while reserving the more expensive pieces for current or past customers.

Automotive direct mail is also cost-effective due to volume factors. Most direct mail companies offer price breaks with increased volume. Under such a system, the more you mail the more you save. Automotive direct mail volumes can be easily scaled up or down to coincide with budget cycles or limitations.

Then there’s the ROI factor:

When used effectively, direct mail marketing can yield a favorable ROI. It has for decades, and it will for many more years. Sure, direct mail strategies have changed with advances in technology, the Internet, etc. But the fact remains that automotive direct mail produces results. Why else would the vast majority of auto manufacturers use direct mail?

2. Direct Mail is Flexible

Automotive direct mail can support any marketing goal. Whether it’s a lead generation program for potential customers, or a service reminder to existing customers, automotive direct mail can produce results. Here are some of the most common uses for automotive direct mail marketing:

New model announcements

Lead generation campaigns

Customer rewards / loyalty programs

Inventory updates

Service reminders

These are some of the most common uses for automotive direct mail, but they are by far not the only ways to use the medium. Forward-thinking automotive companies are finding new ways to use direct mail every day. Direct mail is a dynamic, versatile marketing tool.

3. Direct Mail is Measurable

Direct mail is one of the most measurable of all marketing channels. Once you have a response-tracking mechanism in place (like special 800 numbers, web page tracking, or business-reply cards), the rest is simple math. With television or radio advertising, you have no way of knowing how many people saw your ad, even if you can count responses.

Conclusion

Automotive direct mail can be an effective marketing tool, but it requires a good deal of research and planning. We hope this resource has increased your knowledge of automotive direct mail, and we wish you well in your direct mail marketing endeavors.
