Words of affirmation are so prevalent, important, and powerful but yet subtle, so subtle that we don’t even notice it being the underlining governor in our minds and in our life’s experiences. Words of affirmation have conditioned us in ways that most people have not even considered in their adult years.

For instance, we have been conditioned from school, through things like mathematics, to create problems for ourselves over and over again. Through all of the different equations we had to find to solve all of the many problem-solving questions that math teachers gave their students, and still are giving them today… we have been conditioned to create problems for ourselves. This can be turned into good if it forces us to find solutions to where our attention and focus are more steered toward solutions but unfortunately with the mental overwhelming of mind activity, and lack of concentration, we focus more on the problems and create more problems for ourselves.

But on a subconscious level we have seen the words “Problem Solving” so much in our youth that we have hardwired our brains to search out and notice problems just to solve them for the chemical rush of being right, which can put us in a state to refining our skills in that area. But most schools, at the same time of flooding students with problems to solve, have numerous intellectual commitments, assignments, test, exams, essay papers and many other things that keep the mind at a constant turbulent multi tasking state.

This unfortunately makes it harder for kids to realize and expand their talents and concentration skills and interest because they are mentally tired from all of the requirements of problem solving. Whenever things seem to be going right, the minds is conditioned to seek out a problem that is hidden and the world respond and bring us situations to deal with that we interpret as problems to solve.

Not a lot of attention was put into concentration, contemplation, mental rehearsal and imagination. More of the attention was on problem solving and measuring apartness and separation and calculating reactions and implementing solutions. This can be effective if used rightly but we fail to ascend from the problematic limited way of thinking to the expressions of creativity, abundance and infinite possibilities ways of thinking.

This same mentality has creeped into the minds of most adults and the word job is the new school for problem solving mechanisms using some form of “work”. We have forgotten unconditional love and hardwired our families to be computers to survive in this tough financial problem solving society.

The love has been striped out of families for survival because on an unconscious level we have prepared and organized our brains to seek out problems to solve without us even knowing it which cripples the idea of enhancing and refining our skill to strategies and master challenges in a subconscious and automatic implicit way for a desired outcome using concentration and pure powerful thinking.

We seem to have been stuck in a problem-seeking mode and when we get overwhelmed we go on vacation with the family to catch up on expressing love and life. Our spirit guide knows that it needs love to continue life’s full expression rather our minds allow it or not. This is what creates the imbalance in our wholeness because our intent in mind is different than our intent in heart.

We have been programmed to survive and as parents we sometimes see our kids as motivation to survive which works for a while but you naturally need to Love, Love and Love first. Seek the way of the creator first and your needs will be meet. But we have been delivered from youth, certain problematic words of affirmation in our DNA unconsciously, that has implicitly become our automatic behaviors and ways of thinking.

Love and life has become secondary to surviving. What a tiresome way of living life. Oh lets survive by getting a job, paying bills and keeping a roof over our heads, food on the table and clothes on our backs and then when we have time we will pay attention to one another.

I am explaining the high maintenance family who is conditioned to work, work and work to live and find time to play in between some how. They are prime examples of the conditioning of creating problems over and over again to have to deal with when our minds cannot consciously manage all of the problems we have created with the constant exposure to problematic words of affirmation.

The people who master these problem-solving techniques become our leaders in government, education, media and mainstream. They set the tone and reinforce a system that creates a world of chaos and limitations because all the problems are based on limitation, apartness, labels and division and we have identified our selves and who we think we are with our ability to solve problems.

This is why the entrepreneur world is so big because there are so many problems and an entrepreneur is no more than some one who solves problems and address needs for people for a profit. Helping the needy has become life’s purpose because the parasite exists in the minds of the poverties but Christ consciousness is the keys to full fill this gap. There are many needs in this world because the adversary, through mind, has kept the knowledge away from us of how to create abundance instead of limitations.

From the jump early school systems painted the picture of education that they wanted us to see so that we will live a life of trading time in for ends meet. They know time is limited, which is a problem for us, if that is what you have to rely on to survive. They have mentally equipped us to be in a rat race of specific problems that we had no part in creating. We are at the bottom of the employee food chain acting out as parts of the equation that the successful problem solver has put in place and created a business out of.

This may seem all to coincidental or distant for a lot of people but I assure you if you look deeper you will see that the underlining words of affirmation that has been hardwired in our intellect corresponds equally to

what we believe and what we manifest in our present reality.

The very few wealthy people in the world have surpassed this limited way of thinking and they see that there are no limitation problems in the now. They see what most people label as problems as challenges that they have learned to graciously overcome. They have implanted into their memory program a new set of words of affirmation. Affirmations are so effective in our lives rather we are affirming abundance or limitation. Whatever you organize your brain to tell you is what it will produce.

Most people do not realize that words of affirmation works on an unconscious level in a very big way. Our unconscious thoughts produce measurable changes in our physiology but most people are not aware of the unconscious thinking in their heads. If you are worrying about some future moment in the back of your head and you can’t consciously remember exactly what it is your worrying about at that moment, you are affirming some form of words that have been planted in your subconscious.

We have been conditioned by time to treat the present moment as a problem or an obstacle that needs to be over come. Some how we have gotten stuck in the “oh no its another problem” mode. The idea of no problems but only challenges and solutions starts to make your brain works differently but that different feeling is the unknown. The familiar is so seductive because we can relate to what a problem feels like.

PEACE AFFIRMATIONS

We have not hardwired our brain to experience a reflection of paradise with ultimate peace and only love because of the parasite in our mind that keeps the past alive. Every time we think there is no problems, the body and mind conditioned past finds a problem. Christ tried to present us another way of living when he implied to his followers that they should live like nature. He said look at the lilies and the birds. See how they grow with no stress or toil. You can live like that too.

The only way we can live like that is through the thoughts we choose to focus on in this moment. In order to live like the lily your thoughts has to be natural and clear like the growth of the lily. We must allow life to be freely with an attitude of peace and wholeness no matter what the present circumstance. This action creates a reaction of peace in the future.

The karma for a natural flower is natural beauty because it’s action and reaction is natural with no distress and rooted in love. It takes in just enough solar energy and water and the roots grow and create beauty on the outside through the creators love. The only thing that gets in the way of us living our lives so peacefully like the Lilly and the bird is fear in the human mind. We have lost control of it do to the conditioning of problem solving words of affirmation.

We have to gain control of our subconscious memory system and alter our attention to abundant words of affirmation. We have been condition by school for most of our early years so more than likely you have to unlearn some things you’ve been taught. Whatever words of affirmation you have plant in your mental garden, will be the same words that grows in your physical world as manifestation of things and reality and now is the time to pluck up roots and plant new seeds.

Then the new seeds of abundance have to become deeply rooted and implicit so that it can be automatic. Peace and love becomes second nature and all other needs are added as a result of producing compassion now.

Words of Affirmations effect life in many different areas

· Affirmations for healing

· Affirmations for abundance

· Affirmations for wealth

· Self Confidence Affirmations

· Positive Thinking Affirmations

· Affirmations of Happiness

· Affirmations for Money

· Affirmations for Relationships

· Audio Affirmation

Pluck up the negative words of affirmations that creeped in unconsciously through

· Affirmations of Problems

· Affirmations of Limitation

· Affirmations of Disease

· Affirmations of Anger

· Affirmations of Fighting

· Affirmations of Surviving

· Affirmations of Fear

· Affirmations of Victim

These words of affirmations come in through many ways- from what we read, what we see on televisions and the news, what we learned in school, what we experience at work, what we hear on radio, what we perceive from others, what we see in hospitals, what we experience through drama and chaotic episodes, what we hear in church and what we learn from surviving life situations.

Our conscious mind is like a compass and it guides our subconscious by the words of affirmations we hold in our mind and make more real than anything else. Words are thoughts externalized and as a man think in his heart, so is he. This explains why we become what we have affirmed implicitly. Our spirit guide has to plant new affirmations but first it must make unconscious negative affirmations conscious so that we can recognize it and be in a position to choose a different way of affirming our experiences continuously.

We are constantly affirming reality through the words of affirmations we have stored in our storehouse of affirmations. If we have affirmed going to school, getting good grades and graduating and going to college then working for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week for 40 years and retire, then rest assure you will get exactly that.

Bill Gates wired into his brain a different set of affirmations than the large crowd. He stepped out of the norm and created Microsoft words of affirmation and this stepping out of the norm yielded him a life that stands apart from the normal affirmations of lack. The few people who followed him took on a new mental organization in which they believed enough in his affirmation of abundance in computer programs.

What words have you affirmed in your mind? Have you affirmed problems or have you affirmed abundance? Have you focused more attentions on bills and confrontations or have you focused more on wealth and peace? Where is your point of awareness?

How are you implicitly affirmed to react to challenges in your life situations? Have you mentally prepared yourself to respond to money as of though it is abundant or have you prepared your response to be one of lack and not enough? If you look closely at how you feel and the certain way you act towards money you will see that your world and experiences about money comes to you in an exact proportion of your corresponding inner state.

We can only perceive what our brain is organized to tell us. Perhaps the reason why we have not perceive the life of a millionaire is because we have not organized our brains to attain millionaire status. A millionaire thought is a millionaire seed.

The following article is one of a series of articles which focus on Personal Development, Self Improvement, Motivation and Empowerment. It is based on research done over twenty years as a personal and business coach. This self improvement article was written in response to questions which I have been asked as well as address common challenges that people have with this subject and all aspects of personal development.I sincerely hope that you find the following information of value.

The Real Power Of Affirmation

“I am, therefore I exist,” is a phrase affirming one’s existence as a being. It may be a simple phrase, but it says everything about the being saying them. It indicates a confidence not commonly found among other beings.

But why do people need affirmation? Why do beings need to be affirmed? Is existence relative to one’s affirmation?

Affirmation is a very powerful technique to empower one’s subconscious. Once the subconscious is disciplined to believe one’s affirmation, the latter is converted into a positive action for the conscious mind. Through affirmation, beings are empowered to do, to work, and to strive for more things. Affirmation allows people to believe in themselves and to put their thoughts into action.

Affirmation is a combination of verbal and visual techniques of a preferred state of mind of a person. Strong affirmations can be very powerful, and can be used by almost anyone to achieve his goals and fulfill his desires. However, the power of an affirmation depends on how strong or weak an affirmation is.

Affirmation is merely an assertion made by a person, about something or about a state of being. A person can affirm those that he chooses to attain, like “I now have a good life.” Being healthy in mind, body, and spirit can also be made possible through affirmation.

A strong affirmation should be stated in the present tense to be more effective. An affirmation of “I am now a happy being” is more effective than an affirmation saying, “I am going to become a happy being.” Affirmation should always be in positive terms because it is supposed to work for you and not against you. Instead of saying, “I am not sad,” why not make an affirmation saying, “I am happy.”

When it comes to the subject of self improvement, I fully understand (through my own experiences) that it is a lot easier said than done. However, you are here, right now, because you have a desire to improve your self or you are at least interested in this subject. Perhaps you are reading this to help a friend or colleague – great. If this article helps you or your help a friend, paying it forward is what life all about so we all win.

An affirmation should be made up of simple but concise words, and it should be short to be more effective. A very long affirmation can work the other way around, instead of creating a positive mindset for a person. A short affirmation can be easily spoken and repeated by a person. It can serve as a mantra that can be repeated over and over again.

To be effective, an affirmation must be repeated. Repetition works and influences the subconscious, which in turn motivates the person into acting out his affirmation. A person who creates the affirmation should be deeply involved with the words he will be using, so he will be able to actualize his affirmation. Writing words that one believes in can be very powerful, and this can be put to good use when creating an affirmation.

However, creating an affirmation alone and repeating them a million times would not make the affirmation a state of mind. The important thing is to live one’s affirmation and to be open-minded enough to do the things that would help the affirmation become a reality. Feeling the affirmation and applying it in one’s life will help in making the affirmation a reality.

While affirmation is generally used to make an individual better, it can also be used to boost or confirm another person’s value. By affirming another person’s existence, you are helping him improve his self-worth.

Affirmation is a very simple thing that can make a very big difference in a person’s life. It can be a great motivator and can make things happen.

NOW is the time!

O.K. you have read the article. Now is the time for action. Without action, this article adds no value whatsoever to your self improvement. But remember, without action, you cannot blame this self improvement article or any article for that matter. So, take action NOW.

Even if only one piece of advice, one piece of information, one tip makes a difference, then the whole article has been worth it for all of us. NOW is the time!

How to Use Motivation to Achieve Goals in Your Internet Based Business

How to Use Motivation to Achieve Goals in Your Internet Based Business

What motivates us to achieve? Current research suggests that motivational reflexes are controlled in the Amygdala located near the center of the brain. According to Peter Lang and Michael Davis, brain researchers from the University of Florida, we are similar to other animals in our response to threats or to positive motivational cues. If we are exposed to danger, we respond by releasing hormones in a “fight or flight” response. Once we are clear of the danger, our emotional responses change and we learn to avoid the danger as a natural urge for survival. However, human motivation to achieve is much more complex. Our need for financial and social success is tied to our instinct for survival.

Brain researchers are continually adjusting their theories in the context of social, gender, and cultural issues that influence individual motivation. R. J. Wlodkowski, in his book, Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn (1999), posits that an individual’s motivation is bound to social construction and individual determination. But how does a person develop intrinsic motivation? Is a person just born with the desire to learn new things or is this desire shaped by their environment? There is no doubt that our attitudes are shaped by our experiences in life. There is J.M. Keller’s (1987) ARCS model of motivation in which attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction are factors that determine our motivation for learning. If our experiences capture our attention, have meaning and relevance, give us confidence and are satisfying then we are more motivated to learn.

Whether we are starting a new web-based business or communicating through Internet blogs or Facebook, we are more likely to be open to new ideas if they are relevant to our own background and experiences. Gaining confidence to start an Internet business begins by communicating with others and learning new strategies that will provide us with the next step toward financial success. The “4-Step system” used to train and mentor our new associates are based on years of experience, motivational factors, and collaboration with other Internet marketing experts.

Basketball Coaching: Team Motivation

Basketball Coaching: Team Motivation

Some of us will come home from practices and wonder, “Why on earth did Johnny decide to come out for the basketball team if he doesn’t want to try?” We spend so much time and energy on the frustration and the struggle to get players to perform at their optimum level during games.

I think it can be summed up in one common sports phrase:

“The way you practice is the way you play the game.”

Too many of our players don’t take practices seriously and they are joking around and not focusing on the task at hand. They don’t pay attention in practice and it is reflected in the way they play on the field, court, or arena. What makes the problem even worse is the fact that these players often have a detrimental effect on the attitude and coachability of others.

So, how do you motivate all of the players on the basketball team to start practicing hard? First, accept that you will always have at least one bad apple. The key is limiting the amount of influence that player can have on the rest of his or her basketball teammates.

Here are some of the other methods you can use to get your basketball team motivated to practice hard and play hard:

oReward the basketball team for ‘basketball team’ efforts – Often times peers are the best motivators. You don’t need to crack the whip on any particular player, singling that player out more than the rest. You simply need to motivate the majority of the basketball team by rewarding them when the entire basketball team comes out to work hard during practices and games.

If their basketball teammates don’t want to work and the rest of the basketball team misses out on rewards, or worse yet have to do more work at practice, you can bet that person is going to hear it from the players. I would suggest that will often be motivation enough to get most players in line with practicing hard.

oSet a goal with the basketball team before each game – In hockey, you could set a goal of each basketball team member making a good pass in each period. If the basketball team achieves that goal then they are rewarded.

The goal can be as simple as winning a game, or doing a number of different basketball team skills effectively – even in a loss. As the coach, you can find any number of goals that a basketball team can try to reach during a game or even a practice, in order to motivate the players.

oExplain to them the importance of practice – You can use all sorts of coaching tactics for this one. Start with the fact that other basketball teams are preparing for them, so they need to prepare hard and well for the other basketball teams. You can tell them that improving skills is crucial in raising the basketball team to the next level.

There are literally dozens of different motivational tactics that can be used by coaches to get their basketball team up by showing them the importance of practice. The only thing that you shouldn’t do is be negative. Always be positive with the approach that you are taking. Players don’t often respond to negative remarks.

oHave fun at practice – Set the example early that practices are going to be work, but they are also going to be fun. That way a player knows that they are going to be able to have fun during the practice, but they will also be able to have fun.

This is especially important for the younger players. At that level, you are trying to maintain excitement and enjoyment for players that are probably just learning a game. If they see and hear a coach that is negative and yelling and the practices aren’t fun, then you probably aren’t going to see them for much longer. If they stay, you likely aren’t going to get much out of them.

oSimple encouragement – You wouldn’t believe how far positive encouragement and telling a player when they are doing well goes. It is unbelievable. Just think back to when you were a player in your sport and you heard your coach say, “That was a great steal Joe,” or “how to get the ball out quick Jenny.”

All of those comments help. They help a heck of a lot more than degrading or getting angry at players. No one wants to work hard for a coach that yells at his or her players during a practice or during a game. Players like coaches that lead them to victory through positive reinforcement, good coaching and setting a good example.

It isn’t always easy getting a basketball team motivated for practices, but that is the place to start – especially if you also want to get them motivated for games. Helping to build that motivation by giving players and the basketball team some positive goals to work for – with a positive coaching mentality is the best way to get the most motivation out of your basketball team.

Motivation, Commitment and Engagement (Primal Differences for HR Thought Plan)

Motivation, Commitment and Engagement (Primal Differences for HR Thought Plan)

Motivation, Commitment and Engagement

(Primal Differences for HR Thought Plan)

Under pressure of ever-increasing competitiveness of ever-changing economy, HR Department of every Organization is focused on launching beautifully created training programs and development workshops for capturing the ‘focus’ of employee on his job, for creating that ever-elusive capability and to fire motivation resembling ‘live company, breathe company, sleep company’. In simple words all above training & development programs have one primal agenda that is to make employees more productive, one of ways of which is to make them ‘engaged’. This particular phenomenon where employee has his complete ‘focus on the job’ is known by many terms in Organizations simply as employee engagement, engaged performance, committed employee, motivated employee or many a times by more exotic names like people oriented job capability module etc.

Notwithstanding above what is observed in common is that HR professionals with all their good intent still create programs which intermix the concepts of Organizational Behavior. In this particular thought paper I have tried to clarify how three widely used yet commonly misunderstood concepts of ‘Motivation’, ‘Commitment’ and’Engagement’ are primarily different from each other.

Motivation

What is:Motivation is energy behind attainment of a particular desire. As per Arnold J. Robertson (Work Psychology, 1991) Motivation is a behavior that consists of:

Direction of desire

Effort for that attaining that desire

Persistence for attaining that desire

It is to be noted that it is variability of above 3 elements Direction, Efforts, Persistence that will determine the direction & extent of Motivation in a person.

Theory:Motivation has been a part of numerous researches, experiments and studies. From as old as Indian Scriptures like Vedas describing Motivation as basic desires which drives ego to achieve intended results or Aristotle that it was “the real or the apparent good” of some anticipated consequence, or image of “what is to come” derived in “reference to what is present,” that simulated a living organism to pursue it (if positive) or avoid it (if negative).

Famous theories which have left their impregnating effect on HR scenario are:

Theroy X and Theory Y (Douglas McGregor):

Theory X and Theory Y are about working style of a supervisor/organization in relation to their subordinates/employees.

Theory X assumes that an employee by nature is unproductive therefore has to be motivated to work better through coercion only.

Theory Y goes exactly opposite and assumes that employee when committed will be self-directed and highly productive.

Observation:It is to be noted that though Theory X has been shown by research to be counter-productive, conclusive research on Theory Y has NOT been conducted till date. Therefore author’s view is that one cannot solely rely on either of them for basing one’s decisions.

Herzberg’s 2-Factor Theory (Herzberg):

The Herzberg 2-Factor theory contemplates about what an employee perceives good and bad about in a working environment.

Satisfiers (Motivator):Employees feel good about job content, public recognition, challenge, development opportunities, working culture in the working environment.

Dissatisfiers (Hygiene Factor):Employees feel bad about supervision, policy and administration, salary and working conditions.

Observation: When surveys are conducted then high score in Motivators indicates that employee takes that self-initiated steps or work an extra mile out of Commitment. High score in Hygiene factor is just indicator that employee is not dissatisfied yet since high score doesn’t add to Commitment by employee. While going through complete research of Herzberg, readers will observe that this theory can be claimed as one of the first base on which HR Departments initiated Job Enrichment and Intrinsic Motivation workshops.

Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow):Maslow argued that there are 5 needs of every person and person acts on them as per his position in hierarchy model. As per Maslow’s hierarchy the needs of person always starts at bottom of 1st level and only when this level is satisfied employee shall move to higher level.

5th level: Self Actualization: Challenge, creativity, realization of potential etc.

4th level: Esteem Needs: Self-esteem, confidence, respect etc.

3rd level: Belonging Needs: Relationships including social circles etc.

2nd level: Safety Needs: Security of self, family, resources etc.

1st level: Physiological Needs: Food, water, air etc.

Observation: It is to be noted that researches show that this hierarchy is not always strictly followed and model itself appears to be inconsistent with same experiment repeated in society based in Asian countries like India. It is also observed that needs at lower levels does not disappear once a person is on higher level, making a person always vulnerable to variables of environment.

McClelland’s Achievement Model:Author has found Achievement Model to be one of the least understood concepts on Motivation but one of the most powerful in application. McClelland used Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT) for arriving at research results. This theory states that every person has 3 dominant needs and that each need can measured:

Need for Achievement (N-Ach):Need for achievement indicates the need of individual to continually keep on achieving and excelling at their endeavors. This need is benchmarked against self-determined/accepted performance standards.

Need for Affiliation (N-Affil):Need for affiliation indicates need of an individual for belonging to groups, teams, society, relationships.

Need for Power (N-Pow):This indicates need for having Institutional or Personal power. This may be redefined as need for having control over people and situations. High N-Pow (institutional power) is requisite for effective leadership.

Observation: McClelland focused primarily on Need for Achievement. His assertion mentioned following combinations:

For high standards of excellence employee should have High N-Ach.

Good managers should have High N-Pow and low N-Ach.

N-Affil should be lower than N-Pow for effective behaviors, as high N-Affil scorer may tend to nepotism, favoritism or submissive behaviors.

Diverse Research on Motivation

Understanding & appreciation of Motivation is the basis on which HR Professional conceptualizes, develops and implements Organization policies. Experiments by Dan Ariely (Predictably Irrational, Harper Collins ed. 2009, Pg: 67-88), by Margaret S Clark (Record keeping in two types of relationships, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Volume 47, Issue 3, September 1984, Pages 549-557) and Alan Fiske (Four Elementary Forms of Sociality, Psychological Review, 1992) one can observe that there exists primarily two separate categories of Relationships in every individual’s mind:

Exchange or Market normswhere individual thinks only in terms of money, trading for any service given or provided. Essence is of Give & Take.

Community or Social normswhere requests are friendly requests on the basis of strength of relationships and need only without any thought to monetary value. Essence is To Give As Much As I Can.

Observation:Above 2 relationship spheres operates in different manner. It was found that Communal Norm is more productive but highly susceptible to mutate into Exchange Norm even if an iota of Exchange Norm is involved. These experiments indicate following implications for HR:

Dependence on Monetary benefits only as a motivator leads to trade thinking only without any increase in commitment, engagement or motivation as desired.

Employees’ relatedness with their Organizations, Peers, Superiors and Subordinates are Social Exchange. Social exchanges work best when kept away from any type of monetary exchanges. Social Rewards, Appreciation and Commitment work best when kept separated from any type of monetary benefit.

Social Rewards are much better motivators than monetary rewards.

Commitment

What is:Commitment refers to attachment and loyalty to a cause or to a role model. As per Mowday, Porter (Employee-Organization Linkages, 1982) Commitment refers to 3 characteristics:

Desire to ‘remain’ a member of Organization.

Belief in & acceptance of values & goals of Organization.

Readiness to exert considerable effort on behalf of the Organization.

Observation: From above theory it is observed that ‘readiness to exert considerable effort’ is what makes difference with respect to presence of commitment. However this readiness also creates confusion often misquoted as employee engagement.

The problems with concept of Commitment especially when espoused by HR are as follows:

The measure of Commitment cannot be same for everyone, since organization is coalition of different interest groups (Management, Union, IR Department, Finance, Operative units etc.). The varying motivation of different interest groups brings up the question: ‘Commitment to What?’ (Power in and around Organizations by Mintzberg, 1983).

Author will place an argument that another problem with HR rational of Commitment is that at any point of time people have multiple commitments, which are consistently changing due to internal factors like new found interest, focus on society etc. and external factors like change in policy, devaluation of currency etc. Individual behavior of an employee therefore will keep changing due to intensities of these different multiple commitments.

Therefore it is entirely a different notion of Commitment that is defined as adhering to organization’s value system, which is actually Compliance as expressed by employee vs. the Commitment as desired by HR. (Mowday, Porter.)

When two separate areas that is “Commitment to What” and “Multiple Commitments” are read together then one can observe that presence of ‘Direction of Commitment‘ and ‘Intensity of Commitment‘ makes linkage to performance a concern. As per D E Guest (Personnel Management: The end of orthodoxy; British Journal of Industrial Relations, pp: 149-176, 1991) high organizational Commitment is associated with lower labour turnover and absence, but there is no clear link to performance. That is to say high commitment does not lead to high performance on job. On a lighter note this is analogous to: High Overtime does not necessarily mean High Productivity.

Application:

Commitment to Organization in itself may not lead to higher job performance, since individual employee efforts are rarely visible in Big Picture of organizational performance. However commitment to a cause of organization (or even a team) led by competent Leader should show desired results i.e. direction given by Team Leader becomes sole guidance for directing the efforts of committed employees in that team. This in turns also places important observation that when HR is basing its program and planning on commitment then following is to be kept in mind:

Employee to be committed to Team and Organization both.

Organizational commitment can also be built by better implementation of company policies and practices.

Team commitment can be built by allowing people to affiliate more.

Team commitment and thereby team results are dependent on Team leader.

Engagement

What is:Engagement is said to be present when an employee displays positive discretionary behaviors and efforts towards completion of the job. This can be understood as below:

Discretion in behavior and efforts:A Person when chooses to perform an action/behavior or chooses to not to perform an action/behavior is said to have exercised discretion at his disposal.

Positive Discretion in behavior and efforts:A Person when chooses to perform an action/behavior or chooses to not to perform an action/behavior, both of them when lead to completion of job is said to have exercised positive discretion at his disposal. A negative discretion shall be slacking at work.

Intensity of Positive Discretion in behavior and efforts:It is the extra mile which an employee is willing to walk for completion of his job defines the presence of engagement. A high intensity of positive discretion actions assures that seemingly long stuck issues get resolved.

Following matrix should difference between Engagement and Commitment clearer. (Pg 7 of article)

http://www.scribd.com/doc/44574926/Motivation-Commitment-and-Engagement-Primal-Difference-for-HR-Thought-Plan

Courtesy: pp: 337, Armstrong’s Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice, 11th Ed., 2009

Observation:Above matrix brings out two points to be observed as below:

High Commitment may not always lead to job engagement, yet it is than low commitment.

A highly productive employee may not necessarily be attuned to Corporation. In worst case scenarios such an employee shall resign or display hyper competitiveness damaging work environment.

Application:As per research by IDS, London (HR Studies Update, 2007a) there are 2 elements which are present in any genuine engagement:

Rational Aspect:This aspect talks about employee’s rational understanding of their roles, work itself, fitment of work with Business, economy oriented issues etc.

Emotional Aspect:This aspect talks about employee’s feelings of their roles, work-value alignment, relationships etc.

It is to be noted that both of above aspects shall overlap at many times e.g. work itself is source of rational thought as a economic cycle, also it is related to confidence of employee. Finally, analysis by V Vroom (Work & Motivation, 1964) indicated that it is High Performance that leads to Job Satisfaction i.e.a productive worker need not be satisfied worker and a satisfied worker need not be a productive worker. That is also to say Organizations can now base decision that:

Job Engagement is about Work or Job itself

Giving an individual a job, which she likes, is creating Employee Engagement.

Training her to do her Job better is better Engagement.

Creating Environment which enables her to do her Job better is better Engagement.

Letting her do the Job where she can succeed is Job Engagement.

Ideally, a job should irresistible that employee finds solace in his job (musicians, artists etc).

Job Engagement is NOT about

If Employee doesn’t like his ‘Job’ then engagement cannot be found, even if his performance is superior.

Breaking rhythms of work (micromanaging), interruptions in work (meetings!), dictating that is ‘factors which lead to a feeling in an individual that one will not be able to do her job to her own satisfaction is losing engagement’.

Learning opportunities on the job may or may not increase engagement.

The dictionary description is:

af-fir-ma-tion [af-er-mey-shun]

1. The act or an instance of affirming; state of being affirmed.

2. the assertion that something exists or is true.

3. something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.

4. confirmation or ratification of the truth or validity of a prior judgment, decision, etc.

Thoughts repeated regularly and systematically sink into the subconscious mind and become habitual. Affirmations as these are called are used by many children and adults to create lasting changes in their lives. Finding the right affirmations to use is much more effective if it is in your own words and way of thinking. It is important that your affirmations are written in your own words since the subconscious will react better to your own thoughts than to the thoughts of someone else. It is easy to understand that you probably would not trust anyone more than you trust yourself. Start by taking notice of what you want to change in yourself. Write down on paper your thoughts, desires, and feelings that you may wish to improve upon.

How to use affirmations

When wording your affirmation, you need to use words and phrases for your affirmations in a positive manner rather than a negative manner. As an example, if you wanted to quit smoking, you would not want an affirmation such as “Cigarette smoking makes me sick” because you will in turn cause yourself to get sick. It is better to phrase affirmations like “I am a non-smoker” or “I am healthy and dislike the smell and taste of cigarette smoke” thereby instructing your subconscious to see a different you. When your subconscious sees yourself different, you will become different. Whatever the subconscious mind believes, the conscious mind becomes.

It is important to choose your words wisely. You do not want to use phrases like “I want” because no change will take place since your subconscious is already there. In other words, affirmations worded with “I want” simply are a statement of what “you want”, this only affirms that you will always want whichever it is your affirmations are presenting. You must see yourself as a different you by visualizing what it is you would like to accomplish. Use words like “I am” or “I have”, this allows your subconscious to visualize and believe you are already what you wish to become instead of what you want to become.

Positive affirmations can enhance any area of your life, from improving health, skills, success, relationships and more to conquering bad habits like unhealthy eating habits, aggressive tempers and attitudes, biting nails, bed wetting, drug addictions, or lack of attention and motivation. There are many resources available to help those who find creating affirmations to be difficult. Affirmations can be found on the Internet or in books. Remember to try and use any outside suggestions only as an example and maybe rephrase it in your own words. Thoughts and phrases should come from words within your terms of speaking. If you wish to improve your health, you can find hundreds of examples on the Internet that reflect healthy aspects. Though if for instance you were to find some health affirmations worded in a manner that you would not typically speak, you need to re-write that affirmation into your own words so that you comprehend what your affirmation means. Your subconscious will work faster with affirmations spoken in your terms of speaking faster than that of someone else’s if you do not fully understand it. An example of this could be the legal terminology that most attorneys use, most of us can read it and somewhat understand it, but the lawyers are the ones that can pick it apart and know exactly what it is exclaiming to in ways we probably never imagined. If your mind does not fully comprehend the meaning of the affirmations you are feeding it, your process will not take effect as fast.

How long before you see results

It can take approximately 20 days to create a lasting change but can start taking affect on your behavior a lot sooner where you can notice yourself actually beginning to change in the way you have expressed through your affirmations. It does matter how you use the affirmations too, if you only use your affirmations during the day instead at night like suggested, it may take longer to take affect. Using a recorder or an affirmation unit such as the Mindmaster at night can allow you to create the change subconsciously without the common distractions one normally endures during the day with normal everyday life. Whether it is distractions with traffic, kids, work, cellphones, animals, you name it, they take away from the effectiveness of repeating your affirmations. You could also possibly take time out of your day to go somewhere that is maybe free of these distractions, but that is sometimes a luxury that many of us don’t have. It also takes away from getting other things done too. However, when you are sleeping you have no distractions and the subconscious mind receives everything you tell it. Since your subconscious never sleeps, it is even more receptive to receiving and retaining messages because any doubt and disbelief, which are conscious barriers, are dissolved while you are sleeping, allowing your subconscious image to be changed more effectively.

Affirmations and children

Affirmations though not as widely used as they are for adults can be used with children to help them overcome obstacles that they face with growing up. Fears of the dark, fears of the potty, eating habits, aggressive behaviors, controlling emotions, improving skills and confidence. There are many uses just like with adults that can help your child as well. They should be able to utilize all available tolls that they can when growing up, this shapes them into who they will become later in life. Using affirmations with a child can be a bit different from the way we may use them as adults. Adults have the ability to remember they need to repeat their affirmations where kids usually lack the ability to remember the simplest things they were just told to do. This is where targeting the subconscious mind works best. Much like how adults use recorders, there is a product on the market that is designed for children to repeat their affirmation back to them at night while they sleep on a timed program so it is not in a continuous loop. It has been proven to work successfully with speaking toddlers guided by their parents directive. If you are having problems with potty training for instance, children have stopped wetting the bed in as little as a week, for good and all on their own. This not only helps give the child a sense of accomplishment but also self confidence and belief that they can achieve their goals.

Some Simple Affirmation Examples Are:

* I am a great salesperson who is confident in my abilities to succeed.

* I am productive and a success in all that I do.

* I am efficient and stress-free.

* I am a non-smoker and in control of my health and wellness.

The 3 Keys to Self Improvement and Motivation

The 3 Keys to Self Improvement and Motivation

Most people want to improve themselves in some way, whether it is to lose weight or give up smoking or increase their confidence. Self-improvement is something that we carry out over a life time, but it is a task that can require a lot of motivation. Keeping your motivation levels up and steady can be a job in itself. In order to achieve the motivation required for self-improvement, we need to look at the three keys that will help us succeed in our goals.

1) INSPIRATION

You need inspiration in order to keep you motivated and focused on improving yourself. If you are not as interested in your self-improvement as you should be, your motivation level will not high enough to be able to sustain interest for long periods. You need to take an honest look at your inspiration level. Are you excited about your self-improvement goal or does it feel more like a chore? If it feels like a chore, you are likely to grow weary and uninterested quickly because you have no inspiration or passion to sustain you during the difficult times you will encounter during the journey to self-improvement.

Becoming a better and fuller person should be inspiration enough but when we face setbacks and discouragement it can be difficult to maintain our motivation. The important thing is to reward the progress you make. If you are dealing with shyness, for instance, and successfully socialise with strangers at a party, you should reward yourself for working towards your goal of banishing your shyness. Treat yourself to something you like or enjoy doing – a facial or a new life-affirming book, a trip to the cinema or a wonderful dinner at a restaurant. Spoil yourself a little and do so knowing that you are worth it.

Try and link your self-improvement goal with something that you love doing, like a hobby you are passionate about. Using shyness once again as an example, you could try and work on banishing your shyness by joining a club or evening class that relates to your hobby. That way, you are doing something you love as well as meeting your self-improvement goals and because you are doing something you love you are more likely to continue attending the class or club rather than find excuses to stop attending and as a result weaken your motivation.

2) SET GOALS

Setting short and long-term goals is vital for anyone whose aim is self-improvement. Goals are also an excellent aid to our motivation, spurring us on towards achievement. Most importantly, if you do not set goals you will lack a definite purpose and direction. It’s impossible to be motivated if you’re not even sure about the direction you need to take. The best thing to do is to set out your goals in writing. This does not have to be at all daunting as it is nothing more than putting your aims and wishes in writing. You can view it as a private contract you have with yourself, but the difference is this contract can be changed whenever required so that it suits your needs.

Write down the short term goals that can be accomplished in a matter of hours, days, or weeks. For instance, if you wish to build up your confidence, start learning some positive affirmations and become conscious of your negative thinking patterns. If you suffer from anxiety, learn some breathing techniques. Include your more ambitious long term goals also, that may possibly take months or even years to complete. Do not let timescales worry you. Remember that regular, small steps will take you far. From time to time, refer to your plan to remind yourself of your aims and to fire your motivation. Written goals will make you feel more serious about and connected to your aims and it will also free you from having to work out every day what your goals are. This will save you time which you can then use on fulfilling your self-improvement goals.

3) NETWORKING

Another key to staying motivated is to network with other like-minded people and learn from those who have expertise in self-help. Networking doesn’t necessarily mean you have to meet people face to face, although this is often the best way of communicating with someone. Networking to aid your self-improvement and motivation also means joining groups on the Internet, carrying out home study courses, reading self-help books, websites and blogs, joining online support forums and communities. There is a wealth of different self-help communities on the Web providing worthwhile information and help. You can’t be expected to have all the information you need to understand every stage of your self-improvement so use others’ expertise to help you. You’ll be able to conquer challenges you perhaps could not have done alone.

Networking also helps you to stop feeling alone in your goal to self-improvement. It is very comforting to find that other people are striving for the same goals as us. None of us can truly succeed without the help of others – mutual support is very motivating. If you find a mentor or the right networking group your self-improvement and levels of motivation are likely to soar. Sharing ideas, hopes, problems, wishes, knowledge and successes are an invaluable aspect of motivation and self-improvement and with others to rely on and help you will find that you can accomplish more in less time and also have more fun along the way.

You already have most of the knowledge in the self-improvement subject. Still, why are some people more successful than others? You might have been inspired by a book or tape in the past. Why doesn’t that motivation last longer? Even if you already know the things, why weren’t you able to apply them effectively as the time goes by? The answers to these questions are in affirmations.

Key point is you need to be constantly reminded of the positive qualities you already possess. It has been said that the repetition is the mother of skill. Affirmations provide an excellent way to accomplish that.

It’s a well known fact that our beliefs create our reality. If we think we can win, we can. Affirmations are the best way to develop our belief system.

What is Affirmation?

The Official I AM University website defines Affirmation as A positive statement that has been specifically worded for the purpose of reprogramming the subconscious mind with positive and spiritual thoughts. One of the key tools of attitudinal healing and reprogramming our subconscious mind. This is a fundamental tool given that our thoughts create our reality! (iamuniversity.org/glossary/cv_glossarylist.php)

Affirmation is also known as: Pep talk, Autosuggestion, Positive self talk, Self-suggestion, Mental programming, Positive thinking, Self-hypnosis, Psycho-cybernetics, the Alpha method.

Affirmation is the medium for influencing the subconscious mind.

How Do Affirmations Work?

You know the commercials – same advertisements are shown over and over again. They know the importance of repetition. It takes repetition for an idea to sink in our minds. You need to do the same thing with the positive qualities you are aware of, for them to be absorbed and acted upon by your subconscious.

Napoleon Hill says in Think and Grow Rich – “Here is a most significant fact – the subconscious mind takes any orders given it in a spirit of absolute FAITH, and acts upon those orders, although the orders often have to be presented over and over again, through repetition, before they are interpreted by the subconscious mind.”

Statistics show that negative news is broadcast 11 times more than good news. How can we positively influence our thinking in such a negative environment that we live in? Auto-suggestions help you stay positive even during adverse conditions.

The law of correspondence says our outer reality is a reflection of our inner reality. You attract what you are. It’s true with your financial success or any other success.

Pat Riley, Coach, Miami Heat Basketball team, 2006 NBA champions, quoted – “A champion needs a motivation above and beyond winning” – When you find your purpose and commit it to your core through affirmations you can find that kind of motivation.

A coach motivates his team. Words motivate. You use the affirmations to motivate yourself.

Psychologists and scriptures affirm again and again the importance of having faith. One must have faith in self to achieve any amount of success. “… FAITH is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of auto-suggestion.” – says Napoleon Hill the author of classic Think and Grow Rich – “… you may CONVINCE the subconscious mind that you believe you will receive that for which you ask, and it will act upon that belief, which your subconscious mind passes back to you in the form of ‘FAITH’, followed by definite plans for procuring that which you desire.

“…. any impulse of thought which is repeatedly passed on to the subconscious mind is, finally, accepted and acted upon by the subconscious mind, which proceeds to translate that impulse into its physical equivalent, by the most practical procedure available.”

Dr. David J. Schwartz, author of Magic Of Thinking Big says – “Build your own ‘sell yourself on yourself’ commercial. Think for a moment about one of America’s most popular products, Coca Cola. Every day your eyes or ears come in contact many times the good news about ‘Coke.’ The people who make Coca Cola are continually reselling you on ‘Coke’ and for a good reason. If they stopped reselling you, chances are you’d grow luke-warm and eventually cold to ‘Coke.’ Then sales would drop.

But the Coca Cola company isn’t going to let this happen. They resell you and resell you and resell you on ‘Coke.’ “

You got to sell yourself on yourself again and again to have faith, belief and confidence and then to succeed.

Mark Fisher and Marc Allen, authors of How to Think Like a Millionaire say – “Both authors of this book have experienced wonderful results by using a simple formula or affirmation developed by a famous French pharmacist, Emile Coue. … which consisted of these words: Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.

The golden rule of self-suggestion is repetition, so this should be repeated daily – throughout the day – to have the best effect. A relaxed state, where the subconscious is most receptive to new information, is the best – though not essential. It makes the process effective much more quickly, however.”

Affirmation Examples:

Suppose you want to work on increasing your self-esteem. Self-esteem is a self-image at an emotional level; circumventing reason and logic, a key factor in success. You can use the following affirmations to increase your self-esteem: – “I like myself. I am a winner.” – “I am a valuable person.” – “I have abundance of good things in my life and I am thankful.” – “I am enthusiastic, energetic and full of hope and promise.” – “I am tough, bold, strong and confident.” – “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better”

Similarly, about Goal Setting and taking action: – “I set long, medium and short term goals.” – “My dreams and goals make me look forward to each day.” – “I take an action step toward the attainment of at least one goal everyday.” – “I create an environment that enhances my focus on my dreams and goals.” – “I just write down what I want, prioritize them, and set them as goals with a date.”

Affirmations must be in first person, present tense format to be most effective. There are also secondary affirmations that positively influence our environment favorable for success. They are, such as – famous positive, motivating, empowering quotes, pictures, our own notes and jots that remind us of the inspiring things.

As Deepak Chopra says in Affluence – you do not need to consciously think about the affluent qualities, you just need to listen daily. Similarly, just complete an affirmation session everyday and subconscious will pick it up eventually and do the work.

“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” – Michelangelo

21 Days Make a Habit:

How can we develop good habits? Experts agree that after 21 days of repetition of positive actions you develop them into a habit. So, to start with, just pick only one category, repeat the affirmations and act on it. After 21 days you can move on to other categories.

We are the creatures of habit. 21 days make a habit. You can develop a good habit by working on it consistently for minimum 21 days.

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”–Eleanor Roosevelt

Why do people tend to forget? You need constant reminders. When you use it regularly, this tool can act as a reminder of positive qualities you already possess.

Music:

Studies have shown that slow (60 beats per minute) music brings the heart rate down to relaxing levels, calms the mind, and increases memory, learning abilities and effectiveness.

You must have experienced a good feeling while listening to an uplifting or melodious music. Listening to slow rhythmic music during affirmation may increase the effectiveness of affirmations though not necessary.

“It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception.” – Albert Einstein upon being asked about his theory of relativity.

“Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself.” – Henry Ward Beecher.

Anything is accomplished taking one step at a time and that starts with the first step. As Karen Lamb quoted – “A year from now you may wish you had started today.” So, start using the Affirmations today.

The Theories Behind Human Motivation

The Theories Behind Human Motivation

There are several theories to motivation that have helped lots of people to actually get themselves motivated and figure out what they need to do with their lives. One of the basic theories is called human motivation.

So what is Human Motivation?

Human motivation is the study of basic human nature and drive and how it pertains to human evolution. Human motivation is the setting aside of the animal instincts and focusing on the things that make humans uniquely human, and not animal this is what differentiates humans from animals. It is important to study human motivation because it explains the reasoning behind pursuit of happiness and idealistic human ideas. It involves the reasons behind life and the reasons that humans do what they do.

Freedom of choice is one of the things that make humans unlike any other in the animal kingdom. Only humans have the ability to make intellectual choices and use reasoning.

Human motivation is something that has been the focus of a lot of study. It is what makes humans able to reason. The reasoning skill behind human motivation is something that is involved only with humans and not with animals. This is what helps humans to talk about what is right and what is wrong, instincts non withstanding. This might mean that a human has the ability to decide what they should and should not do, even if their instincts tell them to do something. For instance, it is a human condition that says that stealing is wrong, and human motivation is the motivational factor that will convince a human that it is wrong to steal. On the other hand, animals have no sense of property, and if something is wanted by another animal, it will just take it, with no regard to right and wrong. The concept of human motivation is what sets humans apart from animals.

Using human motivation one can track the results of what a human being does and does not do during the course of their lifetime. There is a separation between instincts and survival processes of animals and the actual reasoning skills in animal processes, when working by the processes of human motivation.
