What is Mindfulness?

The concept of mindfulness has actually been around for thousands of years. Its origins can be found in the earliest Buddhist teachings (2500 years ago). Being in this state of Mindfulness allows you to listen to your gut and discover what you truly need. Mindfulness allows you to acknowledge your feelings, witness your thoughts and redirect yourself away from distraction.

We live in era of constant upheaval and change. Actually, most of us get through life on autopilot. Our brain gets filled with restless ideas and memories that are hard to keep track of especially when we become stressed. We tend to “tune out” and just “try to get through the day.”

Everyone’s mind naturally wanders, but when you practice Mindfulness you are aware of your mind wandering and can gradually redirect it back to the present. Mindfulness allows you to gently quiet all the noise in your head. Paying attention to your breathing, tracking your thoughts, or scanning your body for tension are just few of the many ways to reduce mental chatter. People who practice daily Mindfulness are processing life rather than analyzing its content. The ultimate state of Mindfulness is mental resiliency.

In fact Mindfulness can also help you stay focused and aware even when you are engaged in mundane activities such as driving, eating, and walking. Research has shown its positive effects on boosting the immune system, managing pain, reducing stress and cultivating personal awareness.

A beginning Mindful sequence may involve:

- Sitting in a quiet and comfortable location

- Thinking about where you are and what you are doing at this very moment

- Closing your eyes

- Allowing thoughts about what already or will happen move in an out of your consciousness with your non-judging mind and gentle persuasion

- Focusing on the sensations of breathing each breath and noticing what that does to your belly, nostrils and lungs

- Making note of every thought and feeling that comes up and then returning to your breathing to further anchor your attention

- Observing your mind but, not getting stuck on any one particular thought or feeling as your breathing becomes more natural, full and steady

- Opening your eyes and looking at something you have seen before with a fresh perspective.

What are Affirmations?

Affirmations are declarative statements about something you now know, did, or intend to do. When you use an Affirmation you are not only being aware of your thoughts, but you are taking conscious control of them. When you say, write, read or even think of an Affirmation, you are, in effect, taking steps to acknowledge what is worthwhile about you.

Studies have shown that most of our daily thoughts are negative. Working with Affirmations makes you aware of how self-defeating thoughts chip away at your creativity. Affirmations help you create a new reality and visualize what you essentially want out of life.

Negativity can threaten your health and happiness. In fact, when you are not paying attention to your thinking, you are more liable to pessimistic and not realistic or optimistic. The more you are aware of what you are actually telling yourself, the more upbeat you will sound. Using command based phraseology, keeping the Affirmation in the present tense and making it reality based offers you more reinforcement. Repeatedly telling yourself that you are, or will be, deserving, healthy, and successful, the more your positive determination will flow. You’re more likely to see a bounce in your step and a lift in your life by using daily Affirmations.

What are Mindful Affirmations?

Mindful Affirmations ” are not just inspirational sayings. We use the term as thought provoking phrases that loosely derive from Mindfulness ideas of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, who founded the medical and meditative models of Mindfulness. He came up with Eight Stations of Mindful Meditation:

- Smile

- Breathe

- Arrive

- Attend

- Find the essence

- Slow down

- Listen

- See things with a new perspective

Mindful Affirmations incorporate one or more of these active stations into each passage in order to support the Mindful notion of keeping an “open mind,” where possibilities have no limits. They are not meditations as used by Dr Zinn and others. Mindful Affirmations take ordinary Affirmations like “Your self-confidence will carry you on,” and make them more reality based so the reader can gradually acknowledge and accept the truth about their life. An example of expanding the above Affirmation into a Mindful Affirmation would be “I barely thought of my own self-worth until I saw myself going backwards in life. Letting myself go and losing all I had gained made me feel stuck and dependent. I now see how harnessing my self-esteem can help me not only find my way but, carry me through life.”

This phraseology helps to evoke not only the reader’s subconscious mind, but keeps the reader focused on the key of Mindfulness, just being in the moment.

Pain is about growth and is inevitable. Unfortunately, too many of us have become addicted to suffering… but suffering is optional! Mindful Affirmations make our conscious and subconscious minds look at our pain and release our fears about the unknown. Our inner subconscious mind has the desire for change but doesn’t know just what to change or how to do it. Our outer conscious mind desires to be relaxed, in balance and accept our state of affairs. When working in concert our two minds remove expectations/accusations and allow us to gently examine our feelings, thoughts and behaviors about the past without dwelling or being judgmental.

When Mindful Affirmations are written in the first person they can help the reader not only empathize with the writer, but slowly begin to accept and validate their own pain, saying inside themselves, “I guess I am not alone.” Mindful Affirmations not only break down the reader’s self-imposed isolation but offer them options for change such as in the passage, “I now see that responding rather than reacting will build a healthy interpersonal world for myself.”

It has been my clinical experience that each time I ask a patient to read a Mindful Affirmation, they mention to me that they now see their old problem in a different way. One of the core values of Mindfulness is to be able to see yourself and the world around you with a “new set of eyes.”

The focus is on accepting, commitment and learning (refers to “ACT” therapy) a new way of living or looking at life. Mindful Affirmations help the reader’s mind stay engaged while supporting the surrender of old baggage and unfulfilled expectations.

Mindful Affirmations use positive assertions like “I feel happy,” but allow our present awareness to reinforce our declaration giving us clarity of thought to see our options. It is a coping strategy. For example, the statement “When I am stressed I make myself sit and take notice of my surroundings,” supports your inner desire to stay calm and centered rather than be overwhelmed and scattered.

The book takes Affirmations to the next level by first talking about how “I” (the reader) arrived at the state of not being able to take control, what resulted, and how “I” plan to take command of my life in the future.

Using these three components to the Affirmation not only supports the drive to do better, but plants the seed more firmly that “I” will make progress and “I” can learn from my past. Mindful Affirmations are cyclical in nature. Each time a negative feeling comes up the reader has a choice to make good or bad decisions. The truth is that we are more likely to accomplish what we set out to do, if we are keenly aware of how the past made us feel and what consequences may lie ahead.

Mindful Affirmations help you not only face reality, but look beyond it by challenging your old mental dialogue with a new perspective. Mindful Affirmations allow you to step back from life enough to examine regrets and embrace new options. Mindful Affirmations help you discover that who you really are is what keeps you alive, vital and present.

Selling products or services, it is important to understand why people buy. Marketing, sales, operational infrastructure, and customer service should be crafted with the consumer purchasing perspective.

First, we need to distinguish between why people buy, and why people buy from you. Typically, consumers make a decision to buy, before making the decision on which one to buy, or who will make the sale. Most organizations continually refine the process of studying consumer demographics to understand position in comparison to the competition. In other words, the organizations study why a consumer will buy from them, as opposed to the competition. Design, features, marketing messages, and sales plans are organized to differentiate from the current competition. To take a step ahead of the competition, focus first on the fundamental moment of truth, the point at which the consumer makes the decision that an investment or purchase is worthwhile. Before you can answer the question of “why you”, you must first answer the question, “why buy”?

Prestige, Luxury, and Style

Some purchases are based on luxury, style, and prestige. This applies to products from watches to cars, and collectors items to homes. It is easy to see examples of jewelry, watches, and other personal items as purchases based on prestige. Jewelry and watches can be a personal expression of style, achievement, a gift from a loved one, or the result of a special occasion. Some cars are purchased to accommodate a family, or to get better gas mileage. Some cars are purchased to make a statement, to convey status, or as an investment to show credibility and confidence. When the commitment is made to invest in an expensive timepiece, a luxury automobile, or prestigious real estate property, the decision to buy is typically based with this intent, well before there is a decision on who to buy it from.

Quality, Reliability, Durability, or Reputation

The decision to buy based on quality, durability, reliability, or reputation is often preceded by an experience that raises this as a concern. These considerations may also apply in the decision process for items like watches and cars, but typically not for the same consumers. Therefore, it may be necessary to understand the intent of the consumers in the market to which you are selling. While BMW and Mercedes have reputations for quality, reliability, and durability, the ‘ultimate driving machine’ is recognizably more a statement of luxury performance than a reassurance to avoid roadside assistance.

There is much more focus on durability in the Home Appliance market, for example. The lonely Maytag Repair Man is not trying to convince you that he represents a stylish washing machine, he is reassuring you that his brand is built to last. Once the decision is made to invest in a new washing machine, there are many selections with a wide variety of features. There is opportunity to upgrade for conveniences, for appearance, and for style. However, selections based on appearance are typically made after the consumer has already limited the playing field to a finite number of brands with a reputation for durability. Even the selection of brand is made after the decision that it is necessary to replace a home appliance, typically because the existing item is no longer reliable or must be replaced. Unlike a watch or jewelry, it is not very common for appliances to be replaced as a fashion statement.

Save Time or Money

Sometimes the consumer compelling reason to buy is based on the opportunity to save time or money. This can be just as pertinent to business and commercial sales as it is to individual consumer sales. Saving time, or making more effective use of time, can often be quantified in quality and monetary terms. There is also opportunity to save money by investing in energy conserving devices. Quite often, reducing expense or conserving time are not the catalyst to start the process of thinking about the buying decision, but rather contribute to the timing of the buying cycle. When confronted by a potential need to buy, the opportunity to save time or reduce cost can be compelling motivation to take action.

Sales, Marketing, and the Web

Once you have identified the contributing factors that compel consumers to make a purchase in your market, then it is time to reflect on your message and how you will reach out to those consumers. Your message of ‘why people should buy from you’, should be framed in the context of this moment of truth, the moment that consumers make the decision to buy. This is a distinctly different direction than beginning your planning based on what you have to offer and want to promote from your own features and benefits. On the contrary, begin with the perspective of that precise moment in time that your prospective consumers flip the mental and emotional switch to relinquish monetary funds for the products or services in your market. What are your customers feeling and thinking about at that precise moment? Your marketing and sales messages should be empathic to that moment of truth, and to those customers. If you are struggling to identify that moment of truth, talk to your current customers and find out why they made a decision to change or buy.

Design your web site to welcome consumers at the moment of truth, and to give them your compelling and empathetic reason to buy. Your messages and images should be based on what the customer is looking for in a provider of goods or services. Your web site is not a place to shout your features to the heavens and hope that customers will be hypnotized by your exotic and unique advantages compared to your competition. On the contrary, if the message on your web site clearly identifies customer needs at the moment of truth, then your competition becomes irrelevant. Use your web site and your marketing materials to identify with your customers and create a relationship through demonstrating awareness, compassion, and commitment to that pivotal moment in the purchase process.

Beyond Sales

It is more than marketing messages, web sites, and sales. The awareness, compassion, and commitment to your clients must resound in every aspect of your organization and delivery. Whether you are providing goods or services, the manner in which support and customer service is delivered to the individual consumer must be consistent with the message conveyed before the sale.

If the message before the sale is based on luxury and prestige, then rest assured that your clients are expecting to be treated with luxury and prestige after the sale. The operational functions and customer service must be designed to deliver exceptional personalized treatment and consideration.

If the message before the sale is based on quality, durability, and reliability, then service after the sale is expected to live up to the same merits. It is inevitable that some products or services may experience unexpected failure or defect. The response to defects in material or workmanship should be as reliable as the product is purported to be, and should mirror the same standards of quality. The quality of customer service has much longer lasting impact on a reputation for customer service than any marketing message or brochure. Quality customer service and operational expertise can be the foundation of a reputation for reliability, and the backbone of integrity with existing and future customers. Reliable service is a compelling reason to buy.

Beyond These Examples

These are just a few examples of compelling reasons that consumers decide to buy. The purchase of services may be predicated on product failure, a convenience to replace personal workload, or a strategic decision to outsource a business function. A business decision to buy may be based on periodic timing to implement changes, end of lease, or financial stimulus. There are many scenarios, but it is important to understand the perspective of your customers and the reasons that they buy. There may be multiple contributing factors, and it may be necessary to prepare several different messages to accommodate the different perspectives. Find the most common reasons that your consumers decide to buy, and then work on your marketing, sales, and customer service delivery to match that moment of truth.

An entire industry has developed around the simple skill of public speaking. Studies have shown that public speaking is more feared than death by most Americans. Of course, the greatest fear must be of public speaking to death, that would combine the worst of all evils. Why are most Americans so afraid of public speaking?

My first memories of public speaking fear tie back to early memories of school, and more importantly public speaking at school. I think many of our fears of public speaking tie back to that scenario. I recall being required to stand before the class and recite, from memory, a poem by Chaucer. I was terrified that I would not remember it, and watched as classmate after classmate forgot the poem, and stood there besieged with laughter from his classmates. When I think of my classmates, I wonder how public speaking, given this memory, affects them later in life. Did this one horrible event make everyone fearful of public speaking?

I wish that this instance was unusual, but I hear it over and over again when I ask students when they developed their fear of speaking. It is my theory that a lot of public speaking fear is really fear of memorization. That’s why, in my public speaking courses; I try to eliminate all memorization. I teach speakers that in real life, nobody memorizes anything. You speak from a prepared text or, at a minimum bulleted notes. I have found that once I remove memorization from the public speaking syllabus, speakers loosen up and focus their energy more on positive delivery than negative fear. To me, memorization is the cause of public speaking anxiety. That is why I completely remove it from speaker’s lives to make them happier and more effective.

Do you look stiff reading from a prepared text? Not if you practice and learn good eye contact techniques. Sure, you look more natural without looking at your notes, but you sacrifice your health and happiness. Also, the tension will eliminate any off the cuff naturalness. In the end, you really are better off, and more successful, without making memorization a part of your public speaking job.

Acrylics is the most versatile of paints for fine art. There are many attributes of acrylic paints that make it my choice of paint. There are 3 main advantages of acrylic paints to oil paints and watercolors.

1. Varied Viscosity and Textures

Acrylics can be purchased with different levels of viscosity. This allows the artist to apply color using infinite choice of different techniques. One can apply the impasto technique by slapping on thick globs of paint on the support, or choose to thin the paint with water and make color wash like watercolor.

Acrylics have strong molecular bonds. The material is tacky and stretchable. This makes is possible to be mixed with solid granular or fibrous material to create interesting textures.

2. Different supports

The molecular structure mentioned above allows the paint to stick well to any thickness of material, from paper to wood or even metal, as long as the surface is not totally smooth.

3. Quick Drying

Quick drying paint is a boon to artists who paint layer on layer. Layering is not easy with oils because they take long to dry between layers. Watercolors are not color fast. Layering with watercolors is tricky since the paint is not color-fast. Layering of watercolors lead to bleeding and smudging of the under layer if one is not patient enough.

Within the scope of this article, I shall explain more of painting, as in applying color and not so much on drawing.

Skin Tones and Realism

Contrary to what many art teachers subscribe to, I do not believe there is such a thing as a formula for the color palette. One can use any combination of colors to create paintings of the human figure. I personally, use a very limited palette of not more than 2 colors plus black and white to paint people. The colors used should reflect the artist’s own painting style, and also the tone of the subject matter.

The use of black is actually optional. Some artists do not use black, but rather mix two complementary colors to produce a dark. One great mix would be Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine. However, one can also use Cerulean Blue instead of Ultramarine for a more ‘realistic’ skin undertone.

For eyes, hair and lips, when trying to achieve realism, less is often more. Keep the color of these features muted if unsure. The exception is, of course, when the intention is to exaggerate these feature.

Clothes and Accessories

Clothes and accessories make paintings interesting. If possible, try to paint these last after painting the complete figure. I tend to use the figures as the support for these accessories.

Different Physical Techniques For Painting People With Acrylics

Creating art is free. There are so many ways to apply acrylic paint. Here are 4 broad techniques one can explore.

1. Color Washing

This method is similar to watercolor painting, except that one can use this method to paint on paper or canvas. Use the most fluid Acrylic paint, and thin it with water. The best results are obtained when the paint is really watery-thin. Paint from the highlights and darken as you go. The way to darken the tones is to wait for each thin layer to dry and then paint another thin layer over.

The more layers, the more control one will have on the skin tones. Start with the lighter skin tones like the yellow highlights and gradually add the burnt sienna, and the blue tones for shadow.

The idea for this style is to keep the colors loose and free.

2. Impasto

This techniques looks best on sturdy medium like stretched canvas and wood. It will not look so stable on paper. Visualize the famous portraits of Vincent van Gogh. The paint is thickly applied as if it was just squeezed out of the tube. Acrylic paints look like oil paint when applied this way. Buy paint which has high viscosity. If you need thicker texture, add acrylic gel medium. Apply the colors each stroke next to each other until the canvas is covered. While painting skin tones, most artists applying this technique would paint the darks first. This is because you want the highlights to appear on top of the surface. Hence, start with the shadows.

Extent of realism in this technique depends on the size of the brush strokes and the thickness of the paint. More realism is generally achieved by smaller strokes and less viscous paint.

3. Layering

This is the technique I use most in my present portfolio. The idea is somewhat in between the first two techniques. Use paint of varying viscosity. For lighter areas of the body, use paint thinned with water, and for areas which are darker of less detailed use slightly thicker paint.

For more control on realism, use thin layers. One can also adopt this technique called “Grisaille” method where the first under-painting is monotone to block in the shades.

4. Collage Techniques

Very popular with abstraction painters, and many artists today. This technique is not so much about painting with the traditional brush. The versatility of the paint allows us to mix and stick objects to the paint and onto the support. One can, use these objects under the paint or on top of the paint. Either way, there will be infinite possibility of textures and styles. Normally, realism in painting the human figure is not priority with this style.

Getting that X-factor in a painting

Human figures are the most interesting subjects to have in a painting. Even a landscape, a tiny figure of a person becomes the focal point. We are always drawn to body language. That is why I find it easy to communicate with art by painting people.

In order to add more drama, more expression in a figure painting, one can try experimenting on lighting, foreshortening, composition and clever use of color and brushstrokes.

The possibilities of painting people with acrylics are endless. An ultimate painting of the human figure can speak volumes and express a whole lot.
