Affirmations can play a key role in helping you to leverage daily the Law of Attraction (LOA) for your training for a marathon, half marathon, or other endurance race.

What is an affirmation?

The Law of Attraction essentially says, “We become what we think about.” And we attract more of the feelings and beliefs that we regularly affirm. This is the power behind affirmations.

Why should I use affirmations for endurance running or walking?

You should write and repeatedly read affirmations as an endurance runner or walker because they can focus the Law of Attraction on behaviors and beliefs that will support your racing goals.

Who is the subject of an affirmation?

You should be the subject of each of your affirmations, with the affirmation written in first-person, singular form (as in “I am…”). The reason that having you as the subject of the affirmation is ideal is that your unconscious mind has direct control over you but does not have direct control over anyone else.

How should I write each affirmation statement?

As a positive, not negative, statement: Your unconscious mind will ignore any “no” or “not” in a statement. For example, your unconscious mind will convert “I do not slow down as I approach the finish line.” to “I do slow down as I approach the finish line.”; so “I maintain my pace or speed up as I approach the finish line.” is the preferable way to write this affirmation. Another reason to write affirmations in the positive is that they feel better to say to yourself. And that single, good feeling that you attach to the statement as you say it gives it a stronger impact on your unconscious mind than would a mixed-emotions, negative statement. A third reason to write affirmations in the positive is a practical one: Positive statements tend to be shorter than negative statements. So you can write them more easily and read them more easily.

About the present, not the future: Your unconscious mind treats each statement about the present as something over which it has full control. In contrast, it treats each statement about the future as something over which it has no control. In other words, your unconscious mind operates in the present.

As if it were true, even if it is false today: Every time that you read an affirmation to yourself, you are incrementally strengthening in your unconscious mind the belief expressed by that affirmation. Given that your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between fact and fiction, you can read to yourself an affirmation that is not true today with the assurance that eventually your unconscious mind will align your life with that affirmation such that eventually the affirmation is true. In other words, an affirmation need not be true when written or read, but repeated reading of the affirmation increases the likelihood that eventually it will be true.

With specificity: Specific statements have a stronger impact than vague, general statements have on your unconscious mind. For example, “I am a five-hour marathoner.” is more valuable than “I am a fast marathoner.” as an affirmation.

How many affirmations should I have?

The number of affirmations that you have related to your endurance running or walking depends totally on you. Some people prefer to have just a few affirmations. Other people like to have lots of affirmations, including many that are re-worded versions of other affirmations.

Where should I be when I am composing my affirmations?

You should compose your affirmations at a computer in a quiet, private location. You may want to play some inspiring or gentle music while writing them. A few minutes of meditation before beginning could help your writing, too.

Ideally, each affirmation should feel as if it were an expression of your best self — as if your “higher self” were telling you what it believes you are capable of being, doing, or experiencing.

If you are stumped when you initially sit down to type affirmations into your computer, then give yourself a goal to carry around a pen and small notebook so that you record several affirmation ideas as you go about your daily life. You eventually should have enough ideas in your notebook to produce several affirmations when you return to your computer.

What are some examples of affirmations for endurance runners or walkers?

Here are examples of affirmations that are correctly worded for an endurance runner or walker:

“I always breathe aerobically when I run.”

“I shave at least one minute off my personal record in every marathon that I run.”

“I eat exactly what I need for each walk.”

“I give myself permission to run my own race.”

“I stop for water precisely when necessary at water stops while walking my half marathon.”

Why should I record my affirmations to a computer?

Typing your affirmations into a computer document gives you three benefits over handwriting them:

Typing them on a computer lets you craft them easily. The ease of editing text with a computer ensures that you can craft affirmations that are “just right” for you to repeat many times to yourself over the coming days, weeks, and months.

Typing them on a computer lets you update them easily. Having your affirmations in a computer document means that you can refine them easily to suit you better as your needs or goals change but without having to re-write your entire list of affirmations.

Typing them on a computer lets you print them in different sizes. This gives you the flexibility to make a single-page list for scheduled reviews, larger printouts of affirmations for in-your-face display in your bedroom, bathroom, or office, and a wallet-size, laminated list for on-the-go review whenever you have downtime.

How should I read my affirmations?

Always read them as if you believe them, even if they are not yet(!) true.

Always read them with an emotional intensity that will capture the attention and imagination of your unconscious mind.

Read them aloud if at all possible.

Even if you are only reading them silently in your mind, vary from session to session your pace (from a fast-talker to a slow-talker), your pitch or accent (your own voice, the voice of a favorite actor, etc.), and your volume (from a whisper to a gentle shout) — to avoid boredom and to stimulate your unconscious mind in multiple ways with the same affirmations.

When and how often should I read my affirmations?

Plan to read your affirmations several times a day but at least twice a day:

As part of a morning ritual in which you use several LOA methods to prepare you for the day ahead;

Later in the day — and perhaps as you retire to bed — to reinforce them.

If you work at home, reading your affirmations aloud during your workday may be no problem. If you work in an office, in a retail store, in a warehouse, in a factory, or otherwise with other people in your workplace, then consider using your automobile or a secluded outdoor area as your “sound booth” in which you read your affirmations aloud.

What else can I do with my affirmations besides reading them to myself?

Post individual affirmations throughout your home, in your car, or in your office so that you see and unconsciously absorb them even though you do not consciously and deliberately read them.

Record yourself saying your affirmations, mix that voice recording with different background, instrumental songs that are suitable for the targeted periods for playback (such as for running, for stretching, or for winding down at the end of the day), and play the appropriate mixed recordings at least twice a day — such as while training for an endurance race, while driving, while in the shower, or while completing indoor or outdoor chores.

Affirmations really work for a lot of people. I have heard countless stories, firsthand, of people manifesting income, lovers, children, lost items and events that are joyful beyond words. Others however, do a smash up job of sabotaging their affirmations efforts at every turn and end up with nothing they affirmed and usually being farther behind than when they started. Is it the fault of the affirmation? Are the gods out to get this person because of bad karma? Well, maybe but I doubt it. The answer is really much simpler than dirty karma or cheesed off affirmations elves – the answer is in the flow.

You see life has a flow and sometimes you are racing downstream with your goal clear in sight. Your fans are cheering you on from the shore – you can see your goal, you can smell it and sometimes even feel it between your fingertips. Other times you meander down a shallow creek sometimes running up on a dry creek bed or even getting caught in an overhanging tree. In the end the tree branch saves your life and you reach your goal. It’s later than planned – but you get where you want just the same. Both of these events are part of life. Affirmers sometimes interpret these life events incorrectly and get themselves in a big muddle and end up tossing a super result down the ‘life toilet’. Here is a great (and real) example:

Harry is focusing on manifesting a job that is closer to his creative gifting. He is a freelancer and for the last two years he has been doing projects that have been lucrative, but not exactly in line with his creative area. Harry has been aggressively affirming:

“I am now working with my creative talents and being paid handsomely for it”.

So far it seems to make sense. As well as his job affirmation, Harry has been affirming to attract some new friends and live in a warmer climate. One day an old contact calls up Harry and asks him to work with him on a new product for a few months. Harry will be paid well, however, it is not in line with Harry’s creative gifts. Harry is not busy with other projects but decides to not take the work because he wants to stay true to his affirmation:

“I am now working with my creative talents and being paid handsomely for it”.

Harry continues to work his affirmation for the next two months. That old contact runs into Harry in a local coffee shop and mentions he still needs help with is product launch and lets Harry know he can still come on board. Harry, frustrated at his lack of progress with manifesting his job goal, again, says he is not interested. Later that week Harry tosses his affirmation in the garbage and angrily curses that darn blog that claimed ‘affirmations really work’.

Whoops. Harry really blew it. Here is what was going on in the background while Harry was affirming and affirming for his creative talents to be used. Remember the client that called Harry and wanted help with that new product line? He was the bridge that would get Harry moved to a warmer climate within the next year. That new product line caught the eye of a wealthy angel investor that wanted the whole team to relocate to San Diego. That wealthy investor was to become Harry’s best friend. Three years later Harry’s best friend would invest in a creative idea that Harry dreamt about one warm San Diego night – That idea was the perfect match for Harry’s creative talents.

Ouch. Well cheer up, Harry will never know any of this. Harry will continue on and think affirmations don’t work and maybe reach his goal but it will be hard and it will probably take a long, long, long, long, time. Most likely Harry will spend a lot of time being discouraged, angry and unhappy.

Life is not a linear ruler that we can sit on and see from one side to the other. It twists, turns and wanders all about. Think about how you met your spouse, or a really good friend. Was it planned? Did you wake up one morning and say “Today I will meet a great person that I will spend the next 20 years with?” Likely not. Affirmations sometimes work the same way too. We affirm for a certain item to come to pass. We visualize. We meditate and we affirm some more. We are religious in our practice day in day out. Suddenly, one day, an opportunity presents itself for us to get involved in something, or we get invited to an event, or our car breaks down and a co-worker offers us a lift, or a neighbor offers to call us a plumber because our sink is plugged. We turn down the opportunity, we decline the invitation, we take a cab and we get out the plunger and start plunging. After all, these offers don’t line up with our affirmations.

Or do they?

Accepting the flow in life in one of the best gifts you can give yourself and the key to seeing results from your affirmations. Remember flow means ‘flow’. It takes no effort and it seems to appear from nowhere with you doing nothing to bring it to you. The next time you get an unexpected telephone call from someone you have not heard from in ten years, take notice. The next time you are offered something you were not expecting, think about it. And the next time you are affirming – be open to leaving the how’s of your affirmation up to those affirmation elves*. I think they know what they are doing.

*Affirmation elves do not exist, I think.

As people begin to realize the importance and value of our thoughts in creating the life we desire (or the life we have, but would like to change), affirmations can be instrumental in re-training ourselves in how to think. Before we begin thinking, we start out a relatively clean slate.

As we pick up beliefs and ways of thinking throughout life we begin to think that who we think we are is who we actually are.  This is not the absolute truth.  In actuality, we are much more than we could ever imagine and the negative stuff we have picked up along the way is something we can part with, because it’s not our true essence.

The purpose of affirmations is to affirm the truth and desires about ourselves and our circumstances. What can happen as we begin to focus on what we want and actually verbalize those desires in the form of affirmations, is the stuff that gets in our way will let itself be known.  This is the stuff that life has caused us to believe is really us.

Are affirmations a way to circumvent reality?  Some people use them that way, but clearly intentional use will yield the truth every time: affirmations only affirm what is really inside.  It just needs some affirmation to be fully realized, inside and out.

When people view an affirmation as a band-aid to a problem, the problem they are referring to is the stuff that has stopped you from feeling that the affirmation is true, through and through. Affirmations are most useful when put into practice as a tool to help one get to know him or herself better through clarifying wants and determining unhelpful thoughts and patterns so they can be released.  That ensures the affirmation is healing the cause and not being used as a band-aid.

Your True Self knows you are totally lovable and loving, that you have every resource available to you (even if it is in a different form than you may expect), and that you can make your life into what you want it to be. However, your ego or inner critic, will tell you otherwise.

Practicing affirmations deserves your full attention.  It is of great value to bring affirmations into your life to invite the stuff blocking your way to come up and show you where you can let go and let your True Self shine through. All you need to do is make a simple commitment to yourself: I will be open to be with what is coming up.

You do not always need to know exactly what the issue is that is presenting itself, or the root cause. If it does show itself to you, that is fine. If not, the feeling can still be tended to.

When uncomfortable feelings or thought patterns rise to the surface, much like bubbles coming up from an underwater spring, allow yourself to be with them. Take a few deep breaths and refrain from giving them names (if they don’t have a script running already) or getting involved in the story that goes with them. Ask your feeling or thought what they are about if you desire. Know that acknowledging the uncomfortable feeling will help it dissolve. Do not push against it for that is what has kept it with you to this point.

If you find yourself resisting feeling negative emotion simply remember that it is okay to feel what you feel!  Dealing with painful or stressful emotions or thoughts can be well handled through first allowing yourself to feel them by deeply breathing and following your breath into your body while imagining it cleansing and honoring the emotion, and second, seeking out some techniques to assist if they persist. Working through emotions can be achieved through a coaching session as well.

To get started with affirmations, it is as easy as bringing to mind some statements that on some level you know to be true or you would like to feel the truth of such as: I love me. I am perfect, whole, and worth of goodness. I am financially free. Begin by saying and writing these statements to yourself at least 5 times per day, 10-20 will have a more profound effect. This is the power of changing your thoughts with deliberate action.

As you progress, remember the importance of allowing whatever is standing in your way to come up and dissolve. It may also be helpful to ask yourself questions about your affirmations such as

How would it be possible for me to be financially free?

Why do I love myself?

What about me is perfect and whole?

It is initially natural to question one’s self so use your mind to your advantage in this manner!

Affirmations are not a band-aid.  They are an affirmation of who you truly are and what you can truly do with your life when you learn to believe them.  To believe something you must think it over and over again.

Using affirmations is helpful along any journey to self-love and conscious creation of your life.  It is important to realize that creating affirmations with clear intention is a learned skill.  Start with affirmations that are just out of your belief, but you think may be true. For instance, if saying I love me to yourself feels funny, but sort of true you can stretch it to include other affirmatve statements like I love me and I am fun to be around or I am open to loving myself and I am learning to like myself.

To help yourself get out of your own way, be gentle with yourself as you change and grow and modify your affirmations as necessary.  If an affirmation does not feel good, change it!  Use affirmations daily and often for as long as you desire and know that many people use them for months to feel and notice a substantial change.  We create our thought patterns that are not helpful and use them for decades.  To re-train ourselves it takes some time as well.  Perseverance pays off!

When saying an affirmation to yourself get centered first, take a deep breath, and connect with the feeling of your affirmation, believing it to be true.  In combination with becoming aware of what stands in your way and a commitment to unite with your true self, affirmations are a great tool to discover the true you!

Are We Running Out of Trails to Ride our ATVs?

Are We Running Out of Trails to Ride our ATVs?

Okay, here’s the million dollar question – are we running out of trails to ride our ATVs? In recent days where the popularity of ATVs is growing tremendously and so is the growth of the population in the United States, and with these growths, we find that there are lesser and lesser ATV trails available in the country. It is rather frustrating for ATV riders to look for “adventurous” trails to ride on, especially when great ATV trails are so scarce now. Besides, with the ever-shrinking availability of ATV trails now, there aren’t many people who are willing to share where one can find a great trail to ride – because they are afraid that such places will be “abused” by irresponsible riders or users.

So, if you are a true ATV “hot blood” enthusiast, you wouldn’t be satisfied with just riding your powerful machine at the backyard of your home all the time, would you? Somehow, riding your ATV right at the backyard of your home gives you a different kind of “feel” compared to the adrenalin rush you feel when you venture out into some ATV hot spot trails. Hence, there is without doubt, you would want to bring your ATV out in the woods or some exciting ATV trails for some thrills. The question now is, how are you to find an ATV trail out there?

An ATV gold mine trail is a rarity these days, but do not be discouraged just yet. There is still one place that you can always stop by – http://www.atvoutdoors.net This is a fabulous website for all your ATV trails information together with other ATV related matters. From a wide range of information on ATV trails to opinions and comparison notes on various ATVs in the market as well as ATV parts, http://www.atvoutdoors.net is a great site for all ardent ATV fans out there.

Not only that, http://www.atvoutdoors.net also provides information for those who are planning a camping trip with their ATVs, hunting or any other outdoor activities that you can think of under the sun! If you sign up as a member at http://www.atvoutdoors.net and when you get on the good side of the other ATV fans (some of whom are regular contributors to the forums), you can be sure that they will share with you their secrets of great ATV riding spots and other wonderful tips and tricks about ATV riding too.

Joining an ATV club is also another great way for you to get information on where to ride your ATV. Some ATV clubs arrange ATV riding trips for their members and they usually go to really cool places to ride! Don’t miss out – if you do not belong to any ATV club, you should seriously consider joining one. Find out more about ATV clubs at the forums at http://www.atvoutdoors.net if you want, don’t be left out on best kept secrets of where to ride your ATV.

Lastly, we would like to remind you that it is everyone’s duty to keep the ATV trails “ride-able” and “usable” for continual riding and other outdoor fun activities – so don’t be an irresponsible rider out there, your share of responsibility counts too! Let’s work together and keep the best trails available for a long, long time to come!

Recreational Running – How to Start and Improve Your Recreational Running

Recreational Running – How to Start and Improve Your Recreational Running

Recreational running as the name suggests is leisure or fun running. Though running has been around for as long as the humans have existed, recreational running has become more common in today’s world. Where as some people have made recreational running part of their lifestyles most of them have still yet to get started. Knowing the benefits of recreational running is a vital part in making the decision whether to pursue it or not. Before we look at how to get started with fitness or leisure running, here are some of the main benefits:

o Promotes healthy lifestyle, helps in losing extra body weight

o Reduces life related stresses and brain fatigue

o Refreshes and relaxes the mind hence the whole body

o Improves the general body strength, endurance, power and stamina by building muscle

o Can lead to competitive running sometimes

o Boosts the immunity of the body (most people who engage in recreational running rarely get sick)

o Great form of entertainment

These are just a few of the benefits, but the next question is how can someone with no prior experience start recreational running? Here are some of the helpful tips to help you get started and continue to make it part of your lifestyle:

1. Do your physicals: – Seek medical advice from your physician to make sure that your health status can allow you to pursue recreational running. It is especially important for people who are overweight to consult with their physician to ensure that they are physically able to run or jog without overstressing their body systems.

2. Find a trainer or coach: – Once you have been cleared by your physician, you need to sit down with your trainer or personal instructor who will advise you accordingly. With the help of your trainer or coach, set some realistic goals. Your trainer can help you decide on the right training shoe and tracksuit. Remember to start slow, it is really tempting to put too much on your plate the first time and not be able to get started. Most people get discouraged early in the process as a result of taking too many steps at one time. One step at a time is all you need and before you know, one step becomes a mile and a mile eventually becomes a couple of miles each day. Your goals should not become an obsession; but rather they should just be motivating factors. Remember recreational running should be fun and entertaining not a job.

3. Join recreational runner friends, groups or clubs: Unlike other recreational sports such as indoor games, fitness running is more challenging physically and mentally. Having other people with similar or same interests around is significant for progress. This is especially important for support when the going becomes more challenging. It is also easier to achieve your goals if you treat recreational running as a social activity, after all you are having fun with friends. If for some reason you can’t find others to run or jog with, you can always take your dog for company, he/she will really enjoy doing that and it is great for his/her health too.

4. Participate in fun competitive races: One good goal to include in recreational running is to compete on fun road running. This is a great motivator for both beginners and experienced recreational runners alike. Running or jogging and finishing a 5 K, 10K, half marathon fun race is a wonderful experience that only the competitor is able to explain. There is something special about running with hundreds or thousands of other runners. By this point, recreational running will have become part of your live.

5. Take breaks to recover: I am sure you trainer or coach is knowledgeable enough to include breaks in your training program. The body needs to recover in order for it to make any progress. The principle behind improving your performance in any sport whether recreational or professional is “recovery and adaptation”. The simple explanation of this principle is, training stresses the body, but recovery enables it to recover and adapt to the new level of stress. So the more you train the better you become as long as you recover and do everything else right. Ideally, you can rest 1 – 3 days every week depending on your level of training and your goals. It is also significant to take a complete rest once every few months and do something else like swimming, playing tennis or anything else you enjoy doing other than running for fun.

Other key points to take into account for successful recreational running include:

o Eating healthy: always stay on top of healthy balance diet. It will only help your progress if you eat right, you don’t have to worry about counting calories.

o Hydrate always: Remember almost 75 percent of our bodies are made up of fluids. It is always healthy to drink as much water as possible. This can be supplemented with sports drinks or 100 percent juices. Avoid drinking carbonated drinks if you can, they only help to dehydrate your body.

o Supplements are vital: Mineral and vitamin supplements are crucial for your body’s well being especially when you are involved in recreational sport of any kind.

This is not an exhaustive guide to recreational running but it is a good starting place. There are numerous resources to find more information online. Start recreational running today and enjoy a new fulfilling healthy lifestyle.

10 Tips for a Running a Silent and Live Charity Auction

10 Tips for a Running a Silent and Live Charity Auction

10 Tips for a Running a Silent and Live Charity Auction

1. Choose the right date for your silent and/or live auction

Choosing the right date for your auction is critical. Most auctions are held in either the spring or the fall. Summer is not a good time to hold a major event since many guests may be vacationing. Winter is also considered a bad time of year as many are preparing or recovering from the holidays. Fall is normally considered the best time of year to hold an auction because many of your guests are beginning to get into the holiday shopping mood and may find that what you have to offer is on their shopping list. Weekend evenings are the most popular time to hold auctions since most auctions last well into the night.

2. Pick the right auctioneer for your live auction

You have two choices, a professional auctioneer or a volunteer. This decision generally comes down to the following considerations. A professional auctioneer will charge for their services. However, they will auction more gifts faster and for more money. A professional auctioneer can auction approximately 75 items in an evening, at 20-25% higher than an amateur auctioneer. If you are running a small auction, you may want to use a volunteer. It might also make sense to use a volunteer if you have someone in your organization that has a great personality and is known by many of your potential guests. Best of all, they are free. However, volunteers can cause the evening to run very late and ruin the opportunity to get guests to return to future auctions.

3. Use the most effective strategy for acquiring gifts for both your silent auction and your live auction

Teams provide the moral support necessary to approach a potential donor. Additionally, using teams helps ensure that the paperwork is completed properly. When setting up teams, pay attention to personal dynamics. Certain team members will be more comfortable asking donors for gifts than others. These individuals should be teamed up with team members who do not necessarily have this talent. Also, this allows teams to share the workload by allowing the more reserved person to take on tasks which are more suited to them (documentation, collection of the gifts, etc.).

4. Obtain tangible gifts for both your silent auction and your live auction whenever possible

Many businesses, especially restaurants, will offer to provide you with gift certificates instead of actual gifts. Focus on local businesses that can donate tangible items. You should not turn away businesses that can only provide gift certificates, but they should not be the focus of your campaign. Tangible gifts create a very exciting auction night environment. Just imagine an auction with no actual gifts, but rather just a bunch of gift certificates lying around on a silent auction table. Secondly, a gift certificate is only going to bring in the amount on the certificate, or unfortunately, sometimes not even that. A tangible gift is much more likely to bring in a value that exceeds its real value.

5. Know what to put in your “Auction Packet”

The auction packet is given to guests when they arrive. Some of the items you should include in your packet are:

The auction program

Addendum to auction Catalog

Organization fact sheets

Auction rules

Payment options

Advertising

Silent auction table closing times

Drink coupons

Raffle tickets

Flyers for other upcoming events

Auction paddles

6. Close down the silent auction tables properly

Closing down the silent auction can be a bit tricky. There may still be several bidders bidding on the same item right up until the closing time. To prevent a situation that is perceived as unfair, it is important that the table be closed at exactly the time advertised. It is a good idea to announce the closing of table at prescribed intervals before, such as 15 minutes, 5 minutes, etc. This helps to get interested bidders to enter their “best and final” offer before the time for bidding expires. It is also helpful to close different sections of the silent auction at different times, to allow your volunteers time to pick up all the bid sheets quickly.

7. Take advantage of other opportunities to make money at your auction

Admission fees, the sale of beer, wine and cocktails, raffles, door prizes and the sale of advertising in your program are a few of the ways you can augment your auction revenue.

8. Send out invitations for your auction

If you are lucky enough to have a database of your members or guests from previous auctions then you can send out formal invitations. The design of your invitation can range from very simple to very elegant. Your should mail them approximately 90 days before your event to make sure your guests have not already made other plans for the evening. You should also develop a plan to send out reminders at periodic intervals to those who have not sent in their RSVP. Remember, RSVPs also tell you who has declined, which reduces the number of reminders you need to send.

9. Know the laws regarding silent and live auctions and stay out of trouble

Fundraising events create tax consequences for the guest and the organization hosting the event. According to the IRS; “A donor cannot claim a tax deduction for any single contribution of $250 or more unless the donor obtains a contemporaneous, written acknowledgment of the contribution from the recipient organization.” Also, “A donor may only take a contribution deduction to the extent that his/her contribution exceeds the fair market value of the goods or services the donor receives in return for the contribution; therefore, donors need to know the value of the goods or services.

10. Use checklists to make sure everything goes smoothly

Room reservation checklist

Room setup checklist

Refreshments checklist

Sound system checklist

Check-in checklist

Check-out checklist

Raffle and door prize checklist

Silent auction checklist

Live auction checklist

Auction cleanup checklist

Instead of meaning working on your computer and talking on the phone at the same time in an office, your new version of multi-tasking when you work in your own home based business may include talking on the phone while you feed your baby, recording business letters while you walk your dog, or problem solving while you throw in a load of wash. Hundreds of thousands of people are operating their own home based business.

Finally, you need to choose which industry or topic you are interested in. You need to choose a business in which you have some expertise or experience and that you enjoy. After making all these decisions, you can choose a home-based business that will work for you and begin working on marketing your business to your target customer.

The increase in home-based businesses popping up nationwide is due very much to the idea that many mothers are starting businesses in order to choose a work-at-home lifestyle to bring income into the home, and at the same time, raise their children at home rather than placing them in daycare. While these home-based business are operated in a nontraditional work environment, in perhaps a nontraditional style of operation, they are nonetheless the same as other businesses in the style of carrying inventory, making purchases for the business, marketing the business, and creating a web presence. Business loans for women are crucial for small businesses such as these. Many have proven to be just as successful or even more successful than traditional businesses and businesses owned by men.

Owning a home based business offers many benefits to you and your family. When you work at home in your own home based business you can often adjust your work schedule to reflect the needs of your family, working, for example, when small children are sleeping or in school. Owning a home based business also gives the term ‘multi-tasking’ a whole new meaning!

A home based business is just like any other business except it allows the owner(s) to work at home some or all of the time and — generally speaking, they cost less to start because of greatly reduced overhead. Obviously, with your own home based business there is no storefront or office to rent, fewer or no additional phone lines to pay for, little or no additional utility expense, little or no additional furniture to buy and the cost savings go on!

Some of the expenses of a home based business are the same as brick and mortar types of businesses and will vary depending on the type of home based business and how it is operated. These types of expenses include: advertising, employee costs, corporate taxes.

There may also be many tax benefits to owning your home based business. You may be able to deduct, for example, the mortgage payment, property taxes, repair, maintenance and cleaning costs, as well as heating and cooling costs for certain parts of your home that are directly involved in the operation of your home based business.

Organizing your tax records and information can be a cumbersome task. For most business owners, the tax benefits of running a home based business are often lost among stacks of paperwork and accounting jargon. In this video you will learn tax saving tips that will help you run a more effective and profitable home based business.

There are probably thousands of different types of home based businesses that one can start. There are also many home based business kits and plans that can be purchased which would allow the new home based business owner a ‘ready to go’ business that may involve less risk and less start up experimentation. Another type of home based business is the home based mail order business which would involve basically three components:finding and advertising products or services that sell, processing orders that arrive on the internet or in your mail box, and delivering your orders.

A home based business is any business where you work from home (the clue is in its name, really). There are innumerable great opportunities for starting your own home based business. The advantages of a online home based business are obvious: commuting, no boss, more money for you, setting your own schedule. Many people dream of all these things but never seem to make that leap.

The Evolution of Running in Humans – Why We Are Among the Best Endurance Runners on the Planet

The Evolution of Running in Humans – Why We Are Among the Best Endurance Runners on the Planet

If you have been running for any length of time, you’ve probably received derisive comments and odd looks from friends/family regarding your running habit. “You’re going to ruin your knees” is a common one, “humans aren’t built to run long distances” is another. Fortunately for runners, these sometimes scornful comments couldn’t be further off-the-mark. Read on, and I’ll attempt to explain why it is that humans are among the premier long-distance runners among mammals, how we got to where we are atop this podium, and why sitting on the couch is really what is most unnatural for us as a species.

Ever since I started to run in earnest, I’ve had a sense that running is something natural, something that we as humans are supposed to do. To a certain extent, this probably arises from my training as an anatomist/physiologist and evolutionary biologist. If you think about human history, our human body evolved under a very different set of conditions than it is exposed to today. Our bodies did not evolve in an environment where obtaining food simply required a drive to the nearest supermarket or fast-food restaurant. Rather, humans evolved from ape-like ancestors in an environment where food generally had to be either gathered, scavenged, or hunted, and thus physical traits that enhanced the ability to accomplish these food-gathering behaviors were critical to our survival as a species. Of these physical traits, being able to run is hypothesized by some scientists and anthropologists to have been exceptionally important – our ancestors had to be able to catch prey on the run and get to carcasses before they were scavenged by other animals.

Indeed, endurance running is still a tradition in some native cultures, such as among the Tarahumara of northwestern Mexico. The Tarahumara are widely admired for their endurance running capabilities, and a hunting tradition in the tribe is to chase a wild animal like a deer until it collapses from exhaustion, at which point it can be caught and killed. This type of hunting, called “persistence hunting,” is also practiced by some Kalahari bushmen in Africa, and was described in detail in one of my favorite episodes of NPR’s This American Life (Episode 80). In this episode, titled “Running After Antelope,” Scott Carrier recounts his story of trying to catch a pronghorn antelope by running it down on foot. There was something raw and emotional in Carrier’s story that really struck a chord with me, and if you’re a runner of any kind it’s a must listen. The book “Why We Run: A Natural History,” by Bernd Heinrich, also describes persistence hunting (as part of the larger story of why he, and we, run), and is probably the most enjoyable running book that I have read.

Before I explain the evolutionary hypotheses in more detail, let me start by emphasizing that we humans are darned good endurance runners. In fact, we may just be the best among all mammals when it comes to endurance running. What we lack in speed, we more than make up for in our ability to run long distances at a slow, sustained pace. For this reason, we are one of the few species on earth that can actually complete a marathon. Take dogs for example – I frequently run with my black lab Jack. In a flat out sprint, Jack would blow me away (he spotted a deer behind our house one afternoon, and his sprint through the woods was a thing to behold).

However, when I’m marathon training, I’m careful not to take him much more than 6-7 miles since he burns out after about that distance. Even in winter, there are times when we return from a run and he has to roll around in the snow just to cool down. Keep in mind, dogs are pretty good endurance runners as animals go, but we humans blow them away when it comes to running long distance. As another example, most people would hold horses up as a prime example of an animal designed to go the distance. However, during the annual Man versus Horse Marathon in Wales, humans have defeated the fastest horse in the race on at least two recent occasions, demonstrating that when it comes to endurance among mammals, we are right there at the top. Indeed, in a 2007 article in the journal Sports Medicine titled “The Evolution of Marathon Running,” authors Daniel Lieberman (Harvard) and Dennis Bramble (University of Utah) report that “for marathon-length distances, humans can outrun almost all other mammals and can sometimes outrun even horses, especially when it is hot.”

So lets look at the the data supporting the hypothesis that humans evolved to be runners in a bit more detail. The logic according to the 2007 article by Lieberman and Bramble goes something like this:

1. Our primate ancestors are not good runners. The reason for this is that their anatomy is more suited to life in the trees, and whereas chimps can sprint, they cannot do so for much more than 100m.

2. Fossil evidence shows that about 2 million years ago, our already bipedal ancestors began to exhibit anatomical traits that make for more efficient running (see list below, also see a 2004 Nature article by Bramble and Lieberman titled “Endurance Running and the Evolution of Homo”).

3. These anatomical changes appeared in association with the invasion of a new habitat and the appearance of new food-gathering tactics (i.e., a new niche in ecological parlance). Human ancestors were moving from the trees onto the ground, and we were becoming daytime hunters, with a penchant for eating meat. Fossil evidence (e.g., tooth characteristics) suggests that human ancestors began incorporating meat to a larger degree about 2.5 million years ago (this is not to say that chimps don’t eat some meat – they do). In order to get meat into the diet, we had to hunt and scavenge (and keep in mind that our earliest ancestors didn’t have stone-tipped spears, bows, or high-powered rifles and shotguns).

Lieberman and Bramble (2007) cite a 2006 paper by John J. Shea from the Journal of Archaeological Science (citation provided below) that indicates that stone-tipped spears didn’t appear until about 200,000 years ago, whereas bows have been around for only about the last 50,000 years. Thus, to kill an animal, we had to do it at close range, which means either ambushing them (which can be dangerous to the hunter) or chasing them down. We also had to compete with other carnivores and scavengers (think lions and hyenas) for limited resources in a hot, arid environment. This placed high emphasis on speed and endurance, as well as efficient heat regulation. End result = we as humans evolved to be outstanding runners, and what’s more, we can run efficiently for long distances in environmental conditions that would rapidly exhaust or could potentially even kill most other mammals.

So what is it about humans that makes us such good distance runners? What are the traits that separate us from our nearest relatives? Bramble and Lieberman (2004) and Lieberman and Bramble (2007) suggest the following:

1. Energetics – Humans have springy ligaments in the legs and feet (e.g., the Achilles tendon and the Iliotibial Tract are examples) that allow us to store energy during each down-step and then release that energy like a spring on the up-step. Conversely, in apes these tendons/ligaments are more poorly-developed or absent.

2. Stabilization – It is harder to stabilize the body while running than it is to do so while walking, especially in bipeds. Humans have unique anatomical characteristics that confer much greater stability while running. Among other things, these traits include a well-developed gluteus maximus that is mostly active while running (yes, big butts!), a narrow waist, mobile torso, and improvements in the inner ear that help us to better maintain balance.

3. Thermoregulation – As any runner knows, physical exertion generates body-heat. Because running is muscle-intensive, it generates much more heat than walking, and if we don’t get rid of that heat we can get into trouble (i.e., hyperthermia). One of the reasons why many mammals can’t go the distance is that they don’t have specializations to offload all of the heat produced while running. This is why my dog, Jack, can’t join me for a 20-mile marathon training run in the spring or summer. Humans, on the other hand, can run long in the heat (like on the African plains, or in the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon) because we are expert sweaters. We have no fur (well, most of us) to heat us up, and our sweat glands are densely and widely dispersed across the surface of our bodies. When we run, we sweat, often profusely. When we sweat, we cool down. The trade off here is that we humans lose a lot of salt and fluid when we’re active, which is why companies like Gatorade stay in business.

To summarize the logic of what’s above, I offer the following: We humans evolved to be hunters. To hunt without bows and guns we needed to run. In order to become more efficient hunters, we evolved anatomical and physiological traits that made us better runners. Now that hunting is no longer a necessity, our species for the most part has stopped running, but that absolutely does not mean that running is unnatural or dangerous. Rather, I would argue (strongly) that running is completely natural for humans, and that not running is in fact what is aberrant. Think about it for a minute or two and see if you agree.

Let me finish with a few thoughts. First – the next time someone tells you that running is unnatural, refer them to this article or to the work of the scientists cited here. Simply stated, we as humans evolved to run, and there is nothing more natural that we could do. Does this mean that running marathons every day is natural? Probably not. Does it mean that running a race like the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon is natural? Probably not. Does it mean that running everyday on asphalt and concrete is natural? Probably not. What it does mean is that the next time you lace up your shoes for a run, you are simply celebrating our evolutionary history as a species, and doing something that we have been doing effectively for millions of years. In short, you are being a good animal, a good human. To look at this in one last way, I’ll quote the final paragraph of Lieberman and Bramble’s excellent 2007 article:

“In short, the human ability to run long distances, such as a marathon, is neither a simple byproduct of the ability to walk bipedally, nor a biologically aberrant behaviour. Instead, running has deep evolutionary roots. Although humans no longer need to run, the capacity and proclivity to run marathons is the modern manifestation of a uniquely human trait that helps make humans the way we are.”

How’s that for motivation.

If there is a country that is obsessed with cars, then that would definitely be the United States. After all, this is where mass production of affordable cars for the masses first took place.

For an American, a car is some sort of a birthright. At some point of our lives, it is really a personal necessity to have a car. It is not surprising that the US has one of the highest car populations in the world.

The U.S. Department of Transportation Statistical Records Office estimates that there are 254.4 million registered passenger vehicles in America. That means that more than 80 percent of Americans have automobiles.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the automotive industry, despite the recent setbacks suffered by the Big Three, is definitely one of the cornerstones of American economy.

There will always be an automotive business regardless of the status of the economy.

But competition in the automotive industry is at a very high level these days. More and more automotive business players are coming into the play. If you are in the automotive industry, you should certainly invest on strategies that would give you an edge over your competitors.

Some would say that putting up a website is a sure way to gain more clientele. After all, are not we living in a digital age where almost all people do things over the Internet? Certainly, a website would do a lot for your business.

But you should not rely on a website alone. You should come up with various marketing strategies to ensure your long-term survival. No serious businessman would limit himself to just a single marketing tool option. To ensure that you will gain an edge over your competitors, it is necessary to invest on automotive business cards.

If you have an auto repair shop or a dealership, chances are your business thrives because of loyal customers who keep on coming back for your services. There are guys who will just walk into your shop occasionally, but the main lifeblood of your enterprise is those folks who have been seeking your service for several years. So, a great long-term strategy is to generate more loyal customers.

This is where automotive business cards come into the play. Satisfied customers tend to recommend the services of a particular business to their co-workers, friends, and relatives. Business still is marketed in the old word-of-mouth fashion. It would be, thus, a great advantage for you if you supply current loyal customers with automotive business cards. When they refer you to their friends or relatives, the referrals would get to readily know about basic information about your business, such as your shop’s location. And if that referral would be satisfied with your services, there is a high possibility that he will seek your services again and would become another loyal customer.

Points to Remember on Getting Automotive Business Cards:

As with other business, your card should have a professional look. If you have a poorly designed business cards, people would think that you don’t care about your business. Appearances matter in business. Automotive business cards printed on high-quality gloss or uncoated stocks would surely attract customers.

The size of your automotive business cards is also essential. Business cards should not be bulky. Credit card sized automotive business cards are perfect because they can be easily stored in wallets.

Know What is Running on Your Computer and How This Information Can Help Speed Up Your PC

One of the things that happens to many Windows users is that their computers end up slowing down over time. Much of this is attributed to virus issues, malware problems, and registry errors. There are programs to deal with each one of those. One problem that a user causes on their own is not knowing what programs are running on their computer at all times.

To find out what programs are currently open and running, the easiest way is to hit Control + Alt + Delete. Push these and hold all three down at the same time until you see a dialogue box come up. In that box click on “Processes”. This brings up a list of the applications and programs that you are currently running.

Before you do anything be careful that you don’t accidentally shut something off that is actually needed to keep Windows running properly. If you do shut something off, you will have to reboot to fix the problem.

Sort the programs by their ram usage to see what the biggest computer speed hogs are on your machine. You might notice quite a few applications are in your active RAM that you aren’t currently using. Some of the usual ones are Microsoft Office running in the background or the iTunes Updater. You can end these processes to free up some RAM since you don’t need these things running all the time.

Another important reason to look to see what is running is because something viruses and malware will show up here. You can see them open and running while using your computer. Many have become smarter about not showing up in this list but some still do. At times these can also be caught by looking at your bandwidth to see if these programs are sending or receiving data.

Once you understand what is going on with your machine, you will be able to maintain it much easier and help it run more efficiently.
