Eight Steps for Building a Brand That Builds Market Share

The best way to ensure consistent brand share growth over competition is to have a powerful Brand and deploy it powerfully. Anyone who has a product (the term is used here to include services as well) can develop a reasonably sound Brand Building Program by making sure they take the following eight steps.

Five of these steps are strategic, and three involve how you execute them.

STRATEGIC STEPS

1. Identify the people who are most likely to have a pressing need for your product.

This first step involves your identifying the people who are most likely to be your core target group. These are the people whose pressing need for your product can turn them into core prospects for your product. Why the term ‘core’? These people can be expected to use the product more often and in greater quantities, because their need for your product compels heavier usage vis a vis the usage possible from other people who might have use for your product.

2. Identify the deepest and most lasting motivation of these people, which motivation can be addressed by your product.

This is perhaps the most important step you will take, because it involves seeking out the most powerful dynamics that are already operating out there in the market, so that you can harness their power, and thus multiply the impact of your marketing investment. is to isolate the most powerful emotional drives among these people, which drives might be addressed by your product.

It is important to note that this step is not primarily about your product. It is primarily about the people who are going to be your most valuable customers, because they can be expected to bring in the most revenues for you. In this step you should regard your product only in the context of ensuring that the motivation can somehow be fulfilled, or at least assisted with the use of your product.

Examples of such powerful motivations might be: career advancement, family security, health and well-being. As you can see, these motivations are not based on your product, but your choice would be based on your product being able to contribute toward fulfilling this motivation.

So the motivation you choose might not be the most powerful motivation among your core target group. But it will be the most powerful one that can be supported by your product benefit. This is important because, with this step, you are literally identifying the main thrust of your brand positioning, the one that will provide the greatest propulsion for your business.

3. Identify an attribute or capability in your product that makes your product either superior or unique vis a vis the competing products.

This step involves sharpening the competitiveness of your product in the market. Your product probably has several competitors, any of which might also be in a position to select the same or similar brand positioning. So with this step you will be able to preempt your competitors with a positioning that sets your product apart from theirs – in a way that makes your product preferred over theirs.

This step will allow you to sharpen your brand positioning with the comparative “Your product can …. better than other products can”, or the differentiating “only your product can…”. It is very useful to be able to claim outright superiority over competitors, at least in product attributes or capabilities, if not directly on your strategic positioning.

In the absence of any such outright superiority in your product, seek some product attribute or capability that is unique to your product. Of course, it it preferable for this superiority or uniqueness to be about something that contributes toward the products ability to fulfill your brand positioning.

4. Identify the most credible facts about your product, its formula, its capability, or its benefits, that can support its fulfillment of your sharpened brand positioning.

Not all products require believability. But most do. Hence it is useful to strengthen your sharpened brand positioning with a rationale that is believable, at least rationally, if not experientially. And this believability must be based on an actual ingredient, or design, or capability of your product.

5. Identify the kind of personality that best suits the kind of person who is believable at providing your core target group with your specific brand positioning.

After strengthening your sharpened brand positioning with a believable rationale, you need to establish the right brand personality for your product. The brand personality will bind all of your prospects’ and customers’ brand experiences in tone and character, and do so in a way that is consistent with the kind of motivation you are addressing, and the kind of rationale you are supporting it with.

This is not an easy step. There are many personalities that might work. Some possible personality types are: friend, teacher, lover, boss, advisor, etc. You can be sure that one of these personalities, might be better suited for your specific sharpened brand positioning – than the others.

We have now covered the five strategic steps toward ensuring that your brand is capable of building your market share. We now move toward the three executional steps that are also necessary to this end.

EXECUTIONAL STEPS

1. Identify the brand name, the brand logo, the brand colors, the brand sounds, and the basic brand graphic formats that convey the sharpened brand positioning, and are consistent with the brand rationale and the brand personality – in a way that is both attractive and memorable.

This first executional step involves the basic signals by which your prospects and customers will recognize communications and experiences that come from your product. This step involves considerable creativity. It also involves familiarity with the corresponding brand signals of your competitors’ brands, so that your brand signals are more attractive and memorable than theirs. Beauty and simplicity go a long way in carrying out this step.

2. Isolate a common experience in the lives of your core target group, a metaphor, or an image that can immediately telegraph the essentials of your sharpened brand positioning or rationale.

This second executional step involves the identification of a BIG PICTURE, or SELLING IDEA, that conveys your specific sharpened brand positioning or its product-based rationale in a way that is consistent with your brand personality. This step involves the crystallization of your brand message in a specific visual and conceptual way that you will deploy in all of the experiences or communications that your prospects can have of your product in all your communications with them, and which can explode in meaning in their minds, anchoring your brand’s positioning deep in their psyche. This step can multiply the power of your communications investment, because it makes more sure that your brand message is delivered effectively, every time.

3. Ensure that all the ‘channels’ through which your target group might have experiences or receive communications that they associate with your brand name – know that they are brand communications media, and that they each deliver your sharpened brand positioning, and is consistent with your brand rationale and brand personality.

This step is perhaps the most important one at the execution level of work. It’s thrust is to overcome the tendency of many departments in your company to engage in communications and activities that work AGAINST your business building efforts. Many departments in your company might have the mistaken impression that your brand is a function of the Marketing or Advertising Departments. In fact, contrary to conventional wisdom, these departments are often not the most important means for building your brand in your target groups’ minds. Here’s why.

Target groups are made up of people. People are always interpreting their experiences, and forming opinions and judgments based on them. Hence EVERY experience that a member of your target group might have, which they identify with your brand name, is a means of either strengthening or weakening your brand. For this reason you need to know all these “channels” that might contribute to your core target group’s cumulative impression of your brand.

Several of these ‘channels’, especially the experiential ones, like interactions with your sales people, your drivers, your billing statements, your customer care people, your collections people, and most importantly, the functionality of your product’s packaging, its usage, and its performance – are all based on specific functions that may not be regarded as brand-building functions in your company.

So it is critical that you, and especially they, realize that the functionalities through which they interact with your core target group are powerful brand-influencing media, and that you make sure they are able to fulfill both their functionality and their brand-influencing prospect-experiences carefully.

It is essential that you don’t miss a single such ‘channel’ of experience or communication that can affect the brand that forms in your target group’s mind. Otherwise the one you missed might deliver an experience or communication that leaves behind an impression that can weaken or dilute your brand in your target group’s minds.

In short, you will have to make sure that each kind of experience or communication that your core target group gets, is optimally designed to work hard toward building exactly your sharpened brand positioning. So this step might involve the institution of intra-company communications material, training programs, and motivational programs.

These need to be in place to make sure that each of the customer-facing ‘channels’ that are based on ‘other’ functionalities between your company and your core target group deliver your refined brand positioning optimally while executing their native function effectively.

Conclusion. You now know the five strategic and three executional steps necessary to build your brand in a way that builds your market share. If you make a sustained effort to carry out all these five strategic and three executional steps for your product, you will have a sound chance to increase your market share. When a brand positioning and its execution are pursued responsibly and single-mindedly in this way – you are more likely to convert your competitors’ customers, than you are likely to lose your customers to your competitors.

Affirmation statements -we hear them spoken often by motivational speakers, authors, writers etc., but what can we personally do to harness the power of affirmations in our own lives?

Think about a time in your life when you desired to make a change – something major, like finding a new job, moving to a new city or home, or something less momentous like a New Year’s resolution to improve your overall health. Can you think of a past experience like that? Now, think about the tools that you used or steps that you took to help guide you through that transition and keep you focused on achieving your goals while making that change.

These tools in effect, involved you setting in motion a series of events to accomplish the goals you’d set out for yourself, and one of the easiest ways to achieve success is to create affirmations.

Affirmations are very easy to use and quite powerful once you get the hang of practicing this daily exercise. Affirmations keep you focused on what’s important to you and help you achieve positive transitions. Basically an affirmation is a declaration that something is already true and has come to fruition in your life in the present moment. You have to believe what you are looking to achieve or obtain has already arrived in order for ‘it’ to show up in your life.

If your desire is to create personal well-being, first choose a phrase that describes what you desire. For example, if you desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then your affirmation statement could say, “I feel good and look good when I live a healthy lifestyle.” Or “I enjoy the great feelings I get from exercising daily.” Short powerful statements are more focused and work much better to bring about results than long, drawn-out paragraphs.

There are some rules to follow when creating an affirmation that I’d like to share with you.

Rule # 1: The phrase must be in the present tense, such as “I feel good”, as opposed to “I will feel good” which implies that at some point in the future you ‘might’ achieve your goal. Remember to phrase your affirmation as if your desire.

Rule #2: The statement must always be written from a positive perspective, instead of a negative one. For example, you wouldn’t say “I don’t feel good when I am not healthy” as this places your health – which you are trying to change – in a negative context. Always phrase your desire/affirmation statement in a positive context and in the present tense.

Rule #3: Repeat often. After you create an affirmation, write it down on something that you can keep with you, like a notebook or card to put in your purse or wallet, or place it somewhere that you look at often throughout your day such as on your bathroom mirror or your desk at work. Make sure that you read your affirmation statements as many times during your day as possible.

Studies have shown that using the power of affirmations can lower stress and I have found this to be true in my own life. When I get clear about what I want in my life and focus on my desires with affirmations every day, I am more content and peaceful. What we focus on grows, so the more you focus your attention on your affirmations, the more likely you are to create positive changes in your life and achieve your dreams.

His & Hers – How to Share Emotional Space in a Relationship

How much emotional space do you take up in your relationship? Could the amount of emotional space you and your partner take up in the relationship have anything to do with whether your relationship makes it or not? Indeed it does. Definition of “emotional space”: time and energy spent dealing with or listening to a person’s emotions, words, thoughts, wants, needs, etc.

In terms of the emotional-space dynamic, there are three types of couples:

Type 1 emotional space dynamic: One person in the relationship takes up most of the emotional space.

This is the type of relationship in which one partner seems to be super-involved, expressing most of the feelings and needs in the relationship. This person may seem extreme, emotional, needy, intense, possessive, etc. The other partner in the relationship will seem to be hardly involved and will appear to have hardly any needs at all. The partner that seems super-involved is often filling up emotional space in the relationship, frequently out of fear that there will not be a relationship if the emotional space is not filled up.

Unfortunately, this is a mistake. The emotional life of the relationship needs to be generated by two people, as equally as possible. Otherwise, you end up with a lopsided relationship and with both people unhappy. One will be unhappy because he or she is always working on or putting into the relationship, and the other will be unhappy because he or she seemingly can’t get a break from the drama.

What’s more, the person who is taking up the emotional space in the relationship will eventually get burned out and will need to stop. If the lopsided relationship has been going on for too long, it may simply fall apart, because the partners will not be able to shift gears into sharing emotional space.

Type 2 emotional-space dynamic: Both people alternate in how much emotional space they take up, with one of them always taking up too much.

This type of relationship is a version of Type 1 above, except that the couple is more intertwined and involved with each other. This is a positive for the couple but it also makes them more volatile.

In this relationship, one person is always overbearing and the other person is always under-involved. The two of them spend most of the time dealing with each other’s reactions and have little time or energy left for anything else.

These couples get exhausted and burned out and never get the closeness and connection they crave. They may end up being the couple who say, “I love you but can’t live with you” to each other and get away from each other to simply reduce the drama.

Type 3 emotional-space dynamic: Neither person in the relationship takes up much or any emotional space.

This is a relationship in which people reach a minimum level of intimacy and stay there. They may enjoy each other’s company, perhaps see each other on a regular basis, may even be intimate. They may have been together for a long time, or may even be living together or be married. Yet, they do not move deeper into each other’s emotional lives.

For some people, this type of relationship is more than satisfying, more that enough. For others, it is only a satisfactory prelude to the real depth couples are capable of reaching together.

If you are in this type of relationship and it works for you, great. But if you are in this type of relationship and you want more, read the solution section below.

Type 4 emotional-space dynamic: Both people in the relationship take up enough emotional space to feel connected and loved.

Obviously, this is what a healthy relationship looks like. One aspect of a healthy relationship is that both people can stay involved emotionally and flow with the amount of space each one takes up at any given time. Some periods of time may be predominantly about one person, while most of the time the couple will stay fairly balanced. Neither partner will shut out the other or be too far emotionally removed from the relationship at any given time.

What to do if you are in a type 1, 2 or 3 relationships (see above):

Help for Type 1 relationship

If you are the person taking up most of the emotional space, stop. By taking up most of the space, you prevent your partner from participating in the relationship. Stop taking up the space by shifting your needs outside the relationship (not infidelity). Instead of talking to your partner, talk to your friends or family, or to your journal. Instead of asking for many needs to be met, ask for only some to be met, or for none to be met for a period of time.

Create a vacuum, so that your partner has something to step into. This means you stop trying to create the connection, stop trying to create spending time together, stop trying to be the center of attention. Step off the relationship stage for a bit and let the stage be empty. It will feel strange and uncomfortable, but it is necessary discomfort. If you will not give your partner the room to participate in the relationship, he or she may look for more connection elsewhere.

Get help in learning how to stop taking up so much emotional space. Hire a good therapist or a relationship coach to work on this. You may also need help as a couple in learning how to share the emotional space and in teaching your partner how to take up more space or step up more in the relationship.

Help for Type 2 relationship

Stop the drama. The key for both of you is to tone down a bit all of your emotions, needs, wants, upsets, etc. The two of you must learn to soothe and balance yourselves emotionally, so that no matter what happens, your reactions are minimal. The two of you must learn that you are adults and are OK no matter what.

If you stop having reactions or tone yours down and your partner continues his or hers, let him or her go on with this for a while. There maybe a time adjustment during which the two of you don’t quite know what to do in your relationship.

The key is to learn to relate to each other in a more subtle, loving and calm way.

This may sound simple, but in fact it is difficult to do. Get help from a coach or a therapist on how to stop the drama and balance your relationship.

Help for Type 3 relationship

If you are in a relationship in which neither one of you takes up too much emotional space or gives too much emotionally, the two of you will eventually drift apart. If you want to keep the relationship, it’s time to invest more of yourself in it and invite your partner to invest more as well.

But do not cross over into Type 1 relationship and take up all of the emotional space. Do go slowly; perhaps begin by sharing some small part of yourself you have been holding back. Be a bit more open and a bit more authentic in your responses. Take small emotional risks and see if your partner will follow.

Do be aware that your partner may not want to follow you into deeper emotional waters – some people are highly uncomfortable being close. If this is the case, you will need to choose whether you want to continue the relationship or not. You will need to decide how emotionally close a relationship you ultimately want to have with your life mate.

Here’s what you want to shoot for in your relationship in terms of healthy emotional behavior and space:

o You and your partner can be yourselves with each other and appreciate each other’s quirks.

o You and your partner always ask each other the things you want to know.

o You can bring up any subject, including the relationship, and your partner will talk to you

about it – maybe not gladly, but your partner will talk to you and try to resolve whatever issues you bring up. Sometimes your partner brings up issues.

o You and your partner can ask for what you need from each other. This doesn’t mean either one of you always gets your way, but you can ask and be heard.

o Your partner knows you. You feel seen and appreciated.

o You know your partner. He feels seen and appreciated.

o You love and adore each other.

o You are still hot for each other.

o You can give each other space and time to do things without each other.

As in all things, when it comes to emotional space in relationships, balance the key. Work on balancing the amount of emotional space your take up in your relationship by working on being emotionally mature, so that both of you get to be yourself and be happy together.

In January of this year Steve Jobs told the New York Times:

“… the fact is that people don’t read anymore. Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year.”

Don’t believe it.

If people are reading less why are there more book reviews than ever online? Today you can find hundreds of websites that feature reviews, as well as traditional newspapers and magazines. Just Google book reviews. Somebody out there is reading the reviews and buying the books.

Reviews are proliferating because readers still find books to be an enjoyable entertaining escape and they want to share the experience with other readers. The internet has made it easier than ever to pass on the excitement after closing the book on an especially good story.

Many sites will let you submit your own review; some will even send you the books. You might even set up your own website or blog. If you do decide to publicize your opinions here are a few things to remember.

First let me clarify — a book review is not a book report. A report summarizes the subject matter and presents it in an objective manner.

The book review on the other hand provides a brief synopsis and the reviewer’s opinion of content and technique. It’s subjective and it’s meant to help a reader decide if they want to spend their time and hard-earned cash on it.

Each publication or website has their own requirements. Some may want only a simple plot summary while others require a more complete synopsis. One may ask for an opinion while others call for a numbered rating as well. Make sure you read the submission guidelines and follow them.

These tips will apply to all reviews.

1. Read the book, the entire book. You may be tempted to put aside a novel you find boring. Don’t. Give the author a chance to captivate you. They’re not all bestsellers. Other readers want to know why. If you don’t finish the story you won’t be able to tell them. If it was that awful, be honest. Admit you could not finish it.

2. Do not read other reviews. At least not until you’ve written your own. Don’t let someone else’s opinion influence yours. Come to your own conclusions and have confidence in them.

3. Be objective. You may not be reading your favorite genre. If you love romance and you’re reviewing true crime try to evaluate on style, structure, technique and content. Don’t take off points because it’s not a love story.

4. Criticize without being nasty. Try to find one redeeming feature and start off with that. Remember this is someone’s baby.

5. Make notes while you read. Jot down page numbers or quotes that will help you when it’s time to write your summary. Back up your opinions with examples.

6. Do not give away the ending.

Most of all have fun. Enjoy the pleasure of sharing something you love and the fun of coming across new authors and books that you might not have discovered otherwise.
