Since Katrina, the Environment Is Front-Page News

Ever since the end of August, when Hurricane Katrina devastated the major American city of New Orleans and the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Alabama, the consequences of environmental degradation have been front-page news. Politicians and ordinary citizens are openly discussing what scientists have believed for years: that the widespread destruction of wetlands along the Gulf coast eliminated a natural buffer zone which in the past had served to slow down powerful hurricanes before they hit dense population areas.

The manmade levee systems in New Orleans and along the Mississippi River also came in for some blame. The levees disrupted natural processes which in the past had expanded the fertile farmlands of the Mississippi delta. Instead, the diversion of water caused subsidence which actually lowered major parts of New Orleans below sea level – making them a prime target for flooding, even without the breach of the levees.

Katrina and other recent natural disasters have become grim lessons in the consequences of failing to protect the earth’s natural environment. Floods on the Malibu, California coast periodically wash away million dollar estates – a result of the soil on hillsides being weakened by clear cutting which eliminated the root systems of trees that had served to hold the soil in place. High priced residential communities encroach into previously virgin old growth forests, and then are destroyed as wildfires, often a natural result of lightning storms, wreak havoc on the forests. Antiquated coal burning plants in the Midwest cause air pollution that travels to the Northeast, resulting in mercury pollution that kills rivers, lakes, and streams and ends up in the human food supply via fresh-water and ocean fish.

If there’s a silver lining to the Katrina disaster, it’s this: Mother Nature has finally, dramatically, gotten our attention. Proposals in the U.S. Congress to begin a wetlands reclamation project along the Gulf coast are being taken seriously, and even the issue of global warming is center stage again as scientists, politicians, and pundits debate the effect of the phenomenon on increasingly powerful and frequent hurricanes.

So What Now?

The awful destruction of Katrina, with its human and environmental costs, presents a unique opportunity – to rebuild a major American city from the ground up. Imagine a city re-created in a way that functions with the natural forces of the area, instead of against them. Imagine ruined homes replaced with sustainable housing, a city running completely on alternative sources of energy – wind and solar power, biodiesel, energy harnessed from the tides. Imagine a city with broad social reforms, universal health care, a superlative educational system, and training for the jobs which will be created in the new sustainable economy.

Katrina has gotten our attention. Now we need environmentalists [http://www.thesca.org/agency.cfm], experts in alternative energy and sustainable housing, and politicians to come together to be a powerful force for the future. There will be no better time to make the earth’s environment the number-one priority.

If you have already read any materials related to Law of Attraction, you will understand that one of the main purposes for using affirmations is to strengthen our belief system so that we can harness the power of subconscious mind to attract and manifest what we want in our life.

You may start thinking, yes I did start to affirm what I want, but it just doesn’t seem to happen as things just don’t go according to plan and seem worse than before.

In this article, we will explore 5 main reasons why your affirmation doesn’t work:

1. Verbal instead of mind reading – During the time when we are working with an affirmation, we may be just using our mind to read from the material, such as an affirmation book or affirmation card. If that’s the case, our mind will just simply read and observe it, so it doesn’t have enough energy to hold the intention and it will not be able to create a solid belief and programming. The best way is to affirm it out loud verbally. Sound is form of vibration and when we use our voice, it creates a higher frequency, thus it helps to strengthen the belief, so your subconscious mind thinks you are quite serious and mean what you are saying.

2. Don’t be greedy – sometimes we just want everything in one go, especially when it comes to affirmations. Our ego may think, ‘the more affirmations we read, the better it will go!’ But do you know, when we are reading a list of affirmations, we tend to lose focus of which affirmation we are actually focusing on? Because of this, the mind is not able to register the affirmation since it has already become confused. To counteract this, why not just pick 1 affirmation and focus on it with all your energy and enthusiasm? I would suggest that affirmations are done at least twice a day for 5 to 10 minutes every time.

3. Lack of perseverance – affirmations mean we keep on affirming what we want so that it becomes a part of the positive belief in our mind. But, most of the time we tend to lose focus and become distracted by external factors such as work challenges or relationship issues, so it is very important to set your own time and focus on the affirmation everyday without letting external challenges beat you. From the scientific and metaphysic point of view, if we keep on doing the same affirmation for 21 days, it will form a positive habit and programme within our subconscious mind, so why not set yourself a goal, do it for 21 days and also show your faith to God?

4. Lack of Feeling and Emotion – How we are feeling when we are doing our affirmation work directly affects their efficiency. If you are affirming but feeling a fear of lack or you are doing affirmations for the sake of affirming then your affirmations are not likely to work the way you want them too. Our feelings and emotions serve as the “lubricant” for affirmations so if we charge up the affirmation with positive feelings of love, joy and enthusiasm, your manifestation power will be significantly magnified. It is the same process in reverse if you affirm with emptiness or coldness, the feeling will eventually block the manifestation process and your affirmations will not work.

5. Too focused on Positive beliefs – Our subconscious mind is full of a mixture of positive and limiting beliefs that may cause inner conflict. For example, we belief we want abundance, yet we also believe we don’t deserve it. This issue is known as having dual-beliefs. So these two beliefs actually counteract the other, with the end result of nothing being achieved. When we want to cultivate positive beliefs we have to be willing to be honest with ourselves to see if we have any negative and limiting beliefs that may block the “new” positive belief that we are trying to cultivate from being manifested? To do this, create a list of negative beliefs that you may have and clear them from your subconscious mind through affirmation work. By doing this, your new and positive affirmations are able to function easily and effectively.

Positive Affirmations, how do they work? What changes can I expect?

Affirmations are one of the tools you can use to radically change your life. There is nothing new age, mystic, trendy or fashionable about them. Affirmation is part of an ancient ‘ Secret’, re-discovered and brought back to the limelight by TV. film and press, transforming with it several people into very wealthy gurus.

Affirmations have been around since man found the use of language and there is no secret ritual to use them.

You can basically have anything you want! This tool, if used correctly, will help you change, grow, and heal yourself.

I want to introduce you to the basics of positive affirmation and positive thinking. Later on you may want to surf the web and find out more about this fascinating subject.

When you start the affirmations, give yourself at least a thirty day tryout period. Depending on the seriousness of the problem you may need more time and more affirmations to achieve your goals. Talk to your family and friends about your resolution to change and ask them for their support. If it is a radical change you are envisioning a life-coach will be very useful suggesting the best approach to use and to keep you motivated. This is a big step. Opening up to relatives and friends show your commitment to change and solidify your intentions.

Don’t get discouraged, impatient or put off if nothing happens in a week or two. Just remember that you didn’t become this way overnight.

Affirmations can and will transform your life patterns and perception.

Affirmations support your positive thinking and together they form a very powerful and effective tool. They function as ‘key words’ of positive messages ‘dictated’ directly to the self. You consciously connect and direct your positive thinking to areas of your life that you want to change or heal. It works as a reminder to the self, keeping positive messages at the forefront of consciousness.

The benefits of affirmations are medically well established and really work.

On the other hand negative thoughts are just as powerful. So be aware of your negative thoughts as they are in essence self-destructive ‘key words:’ psychological mechanisms that make your life rotten.

First,  let’s check how aware you are of your thoughts.

Do you regularly have more positive or more negative thoughts running through you mind?

Only you can honestly answer that. So get ready.

If your subconscious is throwing out lots of negative thoughts then you must do some ‘brain-cleaning’ before moving into the desired new positive affirmation mode.

This may be very familiar to you, as your mind swirls with thoughts like: “I don’t like this, I like that, I feel great,  I hate him/her, I am afraid of, I don’t want them to see me like this, I am not sure about that, I feel rotten”.

Your mind incessantly interprets your experiences as an internal dialogue. These thoughts are generated on a deep level by your beliefs which were formed and accumulated from the time you were born.

We can’t control most exterior events of our lives but we do control how we interpret and react to them.

We create our own reality.

When we change our interpretation a change takes place in our reality.

So become aware of your thoughts. If you change your thinking, big changes will happen in your life.

Take a minute to think about why you are reacting to something or someone.

Get in touch with yourself. Accept the fact that these thoughts may have helped you in the past but they are out of place now that you have chosen to accept only positive thoughts and positive living.

While doing the new affirmations your mind will let go of the negative messages even if you are not aware if it.

Watch out also for resistance within yourself. With certain affirmations you may question, “What in the heck” – “are you kidding?”

It is ok, it is an old habit that is about to be changed. You grew up and had these thoughts for almost all of your life. Now it is time to form a new habit and you need lots of practice.

Let’s get started.

What would you like your life to be?

Think about it and write it down.

Fulfillment with your job, a happy family, better health, financial security?

Don’t hold back, go for it.

For the beginners the easiest way is to choose and write down two or three things you want changed.

For example, if you feel unloved and financially strapped, one of your affirmations could be: ” I am now ready to receive more love and wealth” and you may add  ”from the vast supply of the universe”.

If you also wrote down ‘low self-esteem’  the affirmation could be: “I am an awesome man/woman and I feel good about myself”.

Be creative, upfront and fearless. You are making a statement to yourself of your intentions.

Here are a few simple guidelines:

1- Present tense. Start all your affirmations in the present tense and have them already accomplished. You are telling your conscious mind that the affirmative action is taking place NOW and it is final. I AM HAPPY,  I CHOOSE JOY,  I HAVE CONFIDENCE. It is stronger and much more powerful than, I will be happy, or I am becoming happy, and so on.

2- How to phrase your affirmations. You can copy from an extensive list you’ll find on the Internet, use the examples below or simply write it down in your own words. Do it as plainly or as poetically as you speak. ” I am energetic and full of enthusiasm. I am safe, I am a prosperous man/woman. I attract positive people, I release my anger.” Make copies of it and leave it around the house, car and your office desk. The more you are reminded of the positive affirmations the more your mind will accept the new concept you are bringing forth. You will create a new positive reality and the universal energy will do the rest to connect this good energy to other positive energies.

3- Positive means Positive. Your subconscious usually focuses on the verb and relates it to past experiences. If you have fears, phobias or whatever, be careful with your choice of words. If you are afraid and say I am not SCARED, it will register I AM SCARED. The NOT was assimilated and ignored by your mind. Say instead I AM COURAGEOUS or I AM FEARLESS. Don’t use affirmations that have a negative attachment. You can comfortably use I ACCEPT, I CHOOSE, I DESERVE, I AM.  I developed one affirmation to counteract the negative thought that eventually peeks through, so I suggest you add it to the batch,  ”I ACCEPT ONLY THE GOOD AND THE POSITIVE.”

Starting as you wake up, say the affirmations out loud or in your head five times. Repeat the same process three to four more times during the day, the last one just before going to bed.

I suggest you end the affirmation session with a thank you  note. Gratitude will reinforce and validate the affirmations. Thank God, Jesus, a Spirit, the Force, the Universe or whatever you believe and feel comfortable with.

Visualize your affirmations with feelings and emotion. See yourself exactly as you are stating.  It will add an extra psychological dimension and have a much deeper impact on your mind. Using this method of visualization early in the morning and at night will make your affirmations much more successful.

You can use affirmations to help build self-confidence, self-esteem, self-improvement and personal growth. It can also help conquer your fears and anger management. Affirmations have been successfully used to relieve anxiety and depression and are an excellent tool for weight control.

If you check the web under Positive Affirmations you’ll find a multitude of books and affirmations to help you.

I hear of so many people using affirmations as the universal remedy for everything that ails them. They wake up in the morning and verbalize their affirmations. They go through their days verbalizing positive statements about situations and their lives. Then, they go to bed saying their affirmations like bed-time prayers.

I tried reciting affirmations for a while, but never quite understood how stating that ‘I choose to be rich’ would have any effect on my life as long as I sat in front of the television with a bag of chips. The problem was that, I wasn’t doing anything to give the affirmations a basis from which to operate. While an affirmation might have made me feel good, it certainly didn’t create the situations I needed to reach my goals.

If ‘affirmations’ are positive messages to my brain, to retrain it, and to the Universe, to let it know where you choose to be, then planned ‘actions’ provide a basis of reality on which the affirmations would function. This is where I began applying affirm-actions in my life.

— Positive Words —

For many years, affirmations have been considered the solution for many of life’s issues. Confidence, success, and power have claimed to have been gained through daily affirmations. But, many people with whom I’ve spoken say that affirmations do absolutely nothing for them. The problem lies in the fact that you must align your life such that the affirmations can ring true.

The core problem with repeating affirmations to ourselves is that, unless our conscious mind feels that the affirmations are true, it will not process the positive statements. Our conscious mind intercepts the information we are receiving, and filters unrealistic messages, or messages that contradict our belief systems, from the subconscious mind.

Have you ever repeated, as we’ve been taught, sometimes for months and even years on end, the simple sentence, ‘I choose to be wealthy’? Even though it might have made you feel good, were you actually wealthy, or did you become wealthy, at any time? For most people, the answer is ‘No’.

The reason is that your conscious mind was filtering that message as a lie. The conscious mind takes that information, wretches your ‘gut’, and echoes back, ‘Look around! Wake up!’ The good words were not even making it to the subconscious mind where it counts. As long as your conscious mind filters your affirmations as lies, then there is no amount of present tense affirming that can change what ‘you are’ into what ‘you are not.’

— Mixing Words with Actions —

To resolve this problem, you have to do two things: make a plan and change the wording of your affirmations. You not only have to have your subconscious mind involved to actively process your desires, but you also have to give your conscious mind a way to accept the ‘misconceptions’ of the affirmations. Instead of lying to yourself, make a plan and execute actions that support your affirmations. This is where affirm-actions come into play.

You must first make a solid plan that defines your vision, mission, and goals. This plan takes into consideration where you are and how to reach your vision. By making a plan and believing in the plan, you are empowering your conscious and subconscious mind with a weapon to overcome the negative feelings and beliefs that you currently have buried in your mind. This approach will open the channels of communications for your affirmations to make it into your mind.

The second part of the solution is to change the wording of your affirmations. You have to convince your conscious brain to process the misconceptions of the affirmations as truths. Since your conscious brain will filter out lies, you have to word the affirmations in such a way that it will appear as a ‘possibility.’ For instance, instead of saying ‘I choose to be wealthy’ or ‘I am wealthy,’ reword it to say ‘I will be wealthy.’ This is actually converting the ‘lie’ into a command to tell your brain where your plan is leading you.

As you can see, an affirm-action is a more assertive form of affirmation. Essentially, you are converting a baseless affirmation to one that is a possibility simply by associating it with an action. The affirmations then become factual, positive statements that ‘remind’ you of my vision and inform the universe that this is the direction you choose to go.

— What’s next? —

Positive words alone cannot change a world—your world. But, words combined with action can materialize a future of which, at one time, you could only dream.

The purpose of an affirm-action is not to try to convince yourself that you are something that you are not. It is not there to falsify your future or alter the things of the past. It is a way of using your experiences through an intelligent plan and reminding yourself why you’re working so hard along a given path to reach your vision. You are claiming your vision of the future, telling the universe that this is what you want, and going after it.

By combining actions with words, you are initiating a plan to show your conscious mind that you are indeed heading in the direction of your desires. When you begin using your affirmations, in conjunction with the actions, your desires are now making it past your conscious mind into the subconscious mind where it will be of greater use. This is where the soul can get an idea of what you’re doing and will help you get there.

Probably every affirmation coach in the world will tell you something different about the specifics of affirmations so I might as well weigh in as well. To be specific or not specific – that is the question. But what is the answer?

I started out doing affirmations before I had ever heard of them or was given an explanation of the method of affirmations. I had read some self improvement books, identified some areas of my life I wanted to change and thought the way to see change would be to focus on statement that represented my preferred future. Viola, my new life partner was born – affirmations. Seven years later I am still affirming and telling everyone who asks (as well as some who don’t) all about the power of affirmations. It was only about five years ago that I ever heard that these positive statements were called affirmations.

When I started with my ‘positive statements’ I used very specific affirmations. My results were pretty good however some of my affirmations went nowhere. Now I realize I my specifics got me in trouble and limited my results. I also noticed the results I did achieve always seemed to match my specifics – they were never higher or grander.

Now I use very broad and general affirmations and focus more on the ‘essence’ of what I am focusing on. This allows me to really hone in on the ‘feeling’ and ‘experience’ I am seeking while leaving the ‘mechanics’ of how the affirmation will come to pass up to The Universe. Using this approach opens up my results to achieving the feeling I want without sticking to a specific way of getting it.

Are you focusing on buying a new home? Well you could affirm:

“I am buying a new home, and it is easy and fun.”

Is this really your end goal? Or is your goal to be living in a great home and in your mind the only way to have this is to buy a new home… See where I am going? What if The Universe had a really great plan that would allow you to live in a fabulous place but it did not include you buying anything. What if the best solution for you was to inherit a home that you would love forever?

If you focus is on buying a home that is what you will manifest. You will likely find it easy and fun, since that was included in your affirmation however you will never know or experience the joy of getting a home without buying it. You also might be paying for that new home for the next 30 years. Regardless of whether you hold a mortgage you still had to do something to pay for that new house. By using a specific affirmation you may have made your life a lot more difficult than necessary.

How about affirming:

“I am living in a home I love, and it was fun and easy to get it.”

Here is a simple way to broaden your affirmation to reflect the root or essence of what you want to experience with an example involving money.

Identify the issue you want to change: I want more money

Ask yourself: Why do you want more money?

-Do you want to be more secure?

-Do you want to buy something?

-Do you want to make more investments?

-Do you think getting money will make you happy?

-Do you want to pay off debt?

Find out what you want to feel/experience because you will have more money. It could be relief, safety, peace, or a whole bunch of other emotions. Once you think you know the emotion and/or experience you are looking for affirm for that.

Here are some examples:

Money related:

Affirmation: “I am attracting $50K into my life”

Scenario: This guy wants to buy a certain list of objects and he thinks it will cost 50K.

Becomes…

“I am purchasing everything my heart desires and it is easy, fun and a joy to spend this money.”

Love related:

Affirmation: “I am attracting a life partner that will be with me until death do us part.”

Scenario: This gal wants a healthy permanent relationship.

Becomes…

“I am in a healthy, long term relationship that leaves us both satisfied and yearning for more.”

Health related:

Affirmation: “I am jogging five miles a day, in the early morning, and feeling a great.”

Scenario: This fellow wants to increase the amount he exercises.

Becomes:

“My body and I are in tune and healthy, I exercise until I am satisfied.”

Being a little less specific in your affirmation leaves rooms for your results to be grander as well as the method of achieving your affirmation a bit of a mystery.

Remember the person who wanted the 50K? What if the best solution was for him to get 500K and he was able to buy all the things he every wanted now and in the future? Too bad if he affirmed for the 50K I guess he will get his list of things and then his money will run out.

Remember the person who wanted a long term relationship? She actually was to have four of them in her remaining life, all very different and full of adventure and lots of happiness (and each relationship was to end well too). Too bad if she affirmed for the life partner that had to be there until they both died…he never showed up.

Remember the health nut? He was to discover that he really loved yoga a lot more than running and his future wife was that cute yoga instructor that taught the class before his. Too bad if he stuck with his jogging affirmation…he would be forever be buying jogging shoes and thinking this exercise thing ‘sucked’.

The more specific your affirmations the less room there is for the grandest version of the affirmation to come to pass. Focusing on the essence of what you want to experience wins out every time and leaves the figuring out part up to The Universe.

There are two types of affirmations. Each type has two parts that make up the whole of it. Without acting upon this truth, our affirmation work becomes something other than effective. Let’s look at this. Affirmations are effective when they are repeated. Customarily, that repeating would look like us, finding a favorite affirmation, such as “My life now flows with money” and then repeating these words over and over, with the intention that more money manifests for us. Affirmations are associated with courses, classes, and conferences. They are used worldwide, and it is the practice of them that is effective. Yet whether we are aware of this or not, we are always practicing affirmations, twenty-four seven, either deliberately or by default. If we practice type one, the pre-programmed default type, then we get negative results. If we practice type two, through our deliberate practice, then we expect to get the results we expect to get from the particular affirmation we are practicing. We expect to have those results, even when at times we can’t figure out why our manifestations haven’t arrived yet. Here’s why!

Type one is an affirmation whose guidance for our energy is negative in nature. For instance, to say to ourselves, “I can’t do that” would be negative because its guidance leads us to not accomplishing what we set out to do. But it’s not only in the words that we are guided. We are also guided by how we feel when this affirmation comes up for us. We feel resigned, and it is that resignation, combined with the words that flow from that feeling called “I can’t” that makes this particular affirmation so effective. What it is affirming is that you are in that moment, creating the feeling of resignation, which then propels out the necessary words called “I can’t” which inform you of how you are feeling. Hence, this affirmation which affirms what you are creating, has two parts. One feels, and the other, thinks.

Because feelings come without words, this first part of any affirmation can be a subtle way that we trip ourselves up. If we don’t address this first part before we do any and all of our by choice affirmation work, then that work will not be effective. We will affirm, and then get frustrated over why what we told ourselves we wanted, just isn’t coming yet. Think about it. If feelings of resignation are the real source of “I can’t” then no matter what new words replace the old ones, that feeling still is there, and what you are doing is still feeling it, even though your words tell you otherwise! Now in doing so, you are caught up in trying to live a lie, that of telling yourself that you can, while feeling resignation, or that you cannot! How many times have you told yourself you are rich, when in truth you were not? How did this feel? Like you were lying to yourself? Well, you were! But take heart, there is an effective way to do our affirmation work that gets us through this very human dilemma. And it’s one that every single one of us, bar none, have to get through in order to be more and more effective with our affirmations.

How then, in the example provided, do we feel rich, when we are not? That’s easy, tell the truth! Truth aligns our energy, and lies disperse it. We want to do this because aligned energy all goes in the direction you desire it to go in, and dispersed energy just goes everywhere. The affirmed truth I had to tell myself about being rich, since it was my desire to become rich, wasn’t the lie that I already was rich. What I had to come up with was the truth, that “in every moment I am becoming richer and richer.” All the while knowing that my becoming was adding up to then being rich. In this way, if I found even a penny on the ground, this truth was affirmed. Because which part of a few million dollars is a penny not? Through this affirmation I was telling the truth now, and then teaching myself to tell the truth later. All aligned energy! My energy was the most effective as it was directed by my affirmation work, because it wasn’t being used to suppress feelings, or to fight a lie. All my energy was being used to “become richer and richer” in each moment.

What telling myself the truth did, was to have me feel good about myself and what I was doing, and that’s the important part of affirmation work. This is the first and most important part of the two parts of affirmations, that of having how you feel be aligned with the words you choose. In every case, there is some positive way you feel about what you desire to have, because you wouldn’t desire to have something if you didn’t feel good about it! For instance, with regard to relationships, you can say to yourself that you just “Love being in love” because you do! The fact that thinking about loving being in love feels good, will then attract that love to you. You don’t say “I am with my love” when you are not. That would be using your energy in misalignment. Alignment is the first part of feeling good about your affirming words, and then there are the words themselves, two parts, twice as effective.

In the case of positive affirmations, you have to find those words that make you feel good, because they are the truth. Because no matter what the words are, if you still feel the same as you always felt, resigned, or upset, or angry, then all the words in the world won’t shift your energy one bit. Angry feelings produce angry results, and angry money is always lost to those who manage to create it in this way. And people do. They create a lot of money through being motivated by either anger or fear, and then they promptly lose it. They lose it by either actually losing it, or by being so guided by anger that they never really enjoy what they have, and so are completely blind to their abundance. They feel poor, even though they are rich! And that feeling poor is a lie as well. I have worked with billionaires who were some of the poorest people in their minds that I have ever known. No amount of money will cure this kind of resignation, if the feelings behind your actions are not shifted. What shifts them? To begin to tell the truth, and then to continue to tell the truth.

Truth is, most of us desire to have more money. We like the freedom of choice that money gives to us. Or more love. We like the way being loved, and being in love feels. Or most of us desire more____________you fill in the blank! More seems to be our hard wired request, and it’s through affirmations that we feel we can have that more, in whatever form we desire our good to come in. We can have that more, and we can have it through the direction our energy is guided in by our affirmation work. But we can only do this if we pay attention to both parts of that work, the words and the feelings we are creating. Once we do that, then hold onto your hat, because the flow of good that comes our way will be so overwhelming, that there will be times when we have to deliberately slow it down just so that we can enjoy it as it comes. Now that’s affirmation work I can live with!

The dictionary description is:

af-fir-ma-tion [af-er-mey-shun]

1. The act or an instance of affirming; state of being affirmed.

2. the assertion that something exists or is true.

3. something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.

4. confirmation or ratification of the truth or validity of a prior judgment, decision, etc.

Thoughts repeated regularly and systematically sink into the subconscious mind and become habitual. Affirmations as these are called are used by many children and adults to create lasting changes in their lives. Finding the right affirmations to use is much more effective if it is in your own words and way of thinking. It is important that your affirmations are written in your own words since the subconscious will react better to your own thoughts than to the thoughts of someone else. It is easy to understand that you probably would not trust anyone more than you trust yourself. Start by taking notice of what you want to change in yourself. Write down on paper your thoughts, desires, and feelings that you may wish to improve upon.

How to use affirmations

When wording your affirmation, you need to use words and phrases for your affirmations in a positive manner rather than a negative manner. As an example, if you wanted to quit smoking, you would not want an affirmation such as “Cigarette smoking makes me sick” because you will in turn cause yourself to get sick. It is better to phrase affirmations like “I am a non-smoker” or “I am healthy and dislike the smell and taste of cigarette smoke” thereby instructing your subconscious to see a different you. When your subconscious sees yourself different, you will become different. Whatever the subconscious mind believes, the conscious mind becomes.

It is important to choose your words wisely. You do not want to use phrases like “I want” because no change will take place since your subconscious is already there. In other words, affirmations worded with “I want” simply are a statement of what “you want”, this only affirms that you will always want whichever it is your affirmations are presenting. You must see yourself as a different you by visualizing what it is you would like to accomplish. Use words like “I am” or “I have”, this allows your subconscious to visualize and believe you are already what you wish to become instead of what you want to become.

Positive affirmations can enhance any area of your life, from improving health, skills, success, relationships and more to conquering bad habits like unhealthy eating habits, aggressive tempers and attitudes, biting nails, bed wetting, drug addictions, or lack of attention and motivation. There are many resources available to help those who find creating affirmations to be difficult. Affirmations can be found on the Internet or in books. Remember to try and use any outside suggestions only as an example and maybe rephrase it in your own words. Thoughts and phrases should come from words within your terms of speaking. If you wish to improve your health, you can find hundreds of examples on the Internet that reflect healthy aspects. Though if for instance you were to find some health affirmations worded in a manner that you would not typically speak, you need to re-write that affirmation into your own words so that you comprehend what your affirmation means. Your subconscious will work faster with affirmations spoken in your terms of speaking faster than that of someone else’s if you do not fully understand it. An example of this could be the legal terminology that most attorneys use, most of us can read it and somewhat understand it, but the lawyers are the ones that can pick it apart and know exactly what it is exclaiming to in ways we probably never imagined. If your mind does not fully comprehend the meaning of the affirmations you are feeding it, your process will not take effect as fast.

How long before you see results

It can take approximately 20 days to create a lasting change but can start taking affect on your behavior a lot sooner where you can notice yourself actually beginning to change in the way you have expressed through your affirmations. It does matter how you use the affirmations too, if you only use your affirmations during the day instead at night like suggested, it may take longer to take affect. Using a recorder or an affirmation unit such as the Mindmaster at night can allow you to create the change subconsciously without the common distractions one normally endures during the day with normal everyday life. Whether it is distractions with traffic, kids, work, cellphones, animals, you name it, they take away from the effectiveness of repeating your affirmations. You could also possibly take time out of your day to go somewhere that is maybe free of these distractions, but that is sometimes a luxury that many of us don’t have. It also takes away from getting other things done too. However, when you are sleeping you have no distractions and the subconscious mind receives everything you tell it. Since your subconscious never sleeps, it is even more receptive to receiving and retaining messages because any doubt and disbelief, which are conscious barriers, are dissolved while you are sleeping, allowing your subconscious image to be changed more effectively.

Affirmations and children

Affirmations though not as widely used as they are for adults can be used with children to help them overcome obstacles that they face with growing up. Fears of the dark, fears of the potty, eating habits, aggressive behaviors, controlling emotions, improving skills and confidence. There are many uses just like with adults that can help your child as well. They should be able to utilize all available tolls that they can when growing up, this shapes them into who they will become later in life. Using affirmations with a child can be a bit different from the way we may use them as adults. Adults have the ability to remember they need to repeat their affirmations where kids usually lack the ability to remember the simplest things they were just told to do. This is where targeting the subconscious mind works best. Much like how adults use recorders, there is a product on the market that is designed for children to repeat their affirmation back to them at night while they sleep on a timed program so it is not in a continuous loop. It has been proven to work successfully with speaking toddlers guided by their parents directive. If you are having problems with potty training for instance, children have stopped wetting the bed in as little as a week, for good and all on their own. This not only helps give the child a sense of accomplishment but also self confidence and belief that they can achieve their goals.

One of the most powerful tools we can use to change our beliefs and our behaviors is the tool known as affirmations.

Affirmations are simple, short, strong messages that we send to ourselves, by repeating them out loud or silently. Affirmations can also be written.

There’s a good reason why we should master the use of affirmations. If you don’t learn how to choose and use positive affirmations, you will be a victim of the negative affirmations you are already repeating to yourself.

Do you ever catch yourself saying something like, “There you go again, being stupid again. Don’t you ever learn? Can’t you ever do anything right?”

For many people, this is a typical affirmation that runs through their head many times a day.

If you take a look at this particular affirmation, you will notice that it is very, very negative. It says to the person, “You are stupid. You are always wrong, and you will always be wrong.”

Affirmations can be incredibly powerful, whether they are positive or negative. An affirmation acts like a form of hypnosis. It tells the listener how to be and how to behave.

Can you imagine the effect of such a negative affirmation, repeated dozens or even hundreds of times a day, over many years?

When you make the decision to start using positive affirmations, you will be challenging many years of negative affirmations that you have used in the past. You need to experiment and discover the best way that positive affirmations can work for you. There is a lot of information available about how to use positive affirmations, and not every technique is the same. Not every system will work well for each person, as we are all individual.

Still, there are many people who claim that positive affirmations don’t work for them. They try using positive affirmations for a while, and then they get bored, or they give up when they don’t see the results they want right away. Why do positive affirmations sometimes appear not to work?

Let’s get scientific about this. Get out a calculator, or a pen and paper. Now, take a bit of time to think how many negative affirmations go through your mind every hour. How often do you catch a subtle little thought fleeting through your brain that is really a put down of yourself and your abilities. Does it happen once an hour? Ten times an hour? More?

Now multiply that number by the hours you are usually awake during the day. Multiply that number by the number of days you have been alive since you were a child.

The resulting number will give you a rough idea of how many negative affirmations you have said to yourself during your life time. If you are like many people, the number of negative affirmations is a huge, astounding number, perhaps in the tens of thousands or even the hundreds of thousands of times.

Do you have an idea now why negative ideas can be so entrenched in your mind, and do you see why doing positive affirmations for a few weeks might not be enough to turn the tide of your own negative opinion?

For affirmations to work, you’ll have to commit to doing them long enough and often enough. That might mean, repeating your positive affirmations hundreds of times a day for many months. You’ll need to find a way to phrase your positive affirmations so that your mind can accept them.

If you give up on the idea of using positive affirmations, it’s all too easy to slip back into letting negative affirmations rule your life.

You are probably doing affirmations already, you just need to make sure the message you are affirming is the one you really want to hear.

Affirmations are considered “new age” terminology for the practice of positive thinking. The principle is to surround yourself with positive statements and ideas about what you want in life, and you will be more likely to achieve your goals. Affirmations are positive statements that reinforce and inspire you to reach your true life destination and personal fulfillment.

Affirmations can be used to help you achieve success in all areas of your life, everything from your professional life to your health, your love life and your financial situation. If properly written and you commit to your affirmations, they will help you reach your goals and find personal fulfillment.

How Do Affirmations Work?

To be happy and fulfilled in life, we must believe in ourselves. For all of us, our beliefs are thoughts that have been programmed into us since childhood. Some of these beliefs will help you to achieve your goals, but some of the “pre-programming” we have had holds us back from allowing us to believe what we really want for ourselves is actually possible. At a subconscious level, we are continually affirming our thoughts and desires, but to wash away the negative programming that is holding us back, and to really believe in ourselves, we must verbalize our inspirations.

By verbalizing our positive thoughts, over and over again, you re continually chipping away at your negative self-conscience and re-programming your thoughts. Let’s take a goal such as weight loss as an example. If you have always struggled with weight loss, an example of an affirmation you may use would be:

“I am healthy and happy with my appearance.”

You will notice the first times you verbalize this affirmation, you may feel uncomfortable and have negative feelings arouse from within. You may even have a feeling of resistance before you say the statement. This is your subconscious showing its true feeling. You subconscious is not agreeing with your statement and is trying to tell you it is not possible. Keep at it. Repeat your affirmation, day after day. You will eventually start to feel joy and a sense of well-being. This is when you know your affirmation is starting to work. You are essentially “brainwashing” away any negative thoughts you have about the goal you are trying to reach.

How Quickly Will My Affirmations Start To Work For Me?

There is no specific formula or timeline that will dictate how long it will take before your affirmations stat to have an impact on your life. It will depend greatly upon how much inner resistance you have to the affirmations you have written and how willing you are to make a change in your life. The question should not really be one of how long it will take, but rather how much do you want the change to happen.

How to Write Affirmations

There are no set rules on how to write affirmations, but there are some tips to help you write meaningful, effective affirmations:

Tips to making Affirmations Relevant and Useful

Write in the present tense.

If you write about what you want in the future, you may end up waiting a long time for your affirmation to come true.

You cannot make affirmations for other people. You are doing this for you. Your affirmations should in fact sound self centered. Their purpose is to encourage you and attract what you want out of life.

Your affirmation should always be in a positive tone, and it should include a positive emotion such as: I am excited, I am passionate, I am slim, I am fit, I am healthy….

The more likely you are to remember your affirmation, the more likely you are to say it. If it is too wordy, you will have a hard time remembering it.

If what you have written makes you so uncomfortable that you feel you are lying to yourself, change the wording something you believe, such as:

I intend to….

I am willing to….

I choose to….

Make it about you Include positive emotion Keep it short and sweet You must believe it Examples of Affirmations Health

Getting Results From Your Affirmations

There are several methods that can be used alone, or in combination. You will have to determine what method(s) are going to work for you. At minimum though, you need to verbalize your affirmations at least once a day in combination with at least one other method listed below.

Here is a sample of various ways you can use your affirmations to help you get results.

Method 1 – Written Method

Write out your affirmations 15 times every morning and every night before you go to bed.

Say them out load to yourself in the mirror using you statements.

Say your affirmation out loud anytime you feel yourself engaging in a negative though or activity that contradicts your affirmation.

Method 2 – You In The Mirror Method 3 – The Negative Roadblock

Example: If you are trying to quit smoking, and you feel yourself reaching for a cigarette, say your affirmation out loud “I am living a healthy lifestyle.”

Method 3 – Record Yourself

Make a recording of your affirmations that you can play over and over again in the car, or on your iPod.

Many people report that falling asleep listening to their affirmations has been very successful.

Sing your affirmations.

Write out each of your affirmations on individual 3 x 5 recipe cards (one per card). Create several cards for each affirmation. Post the cards in various places where you will see them on a daily basis.

Method 4 – The Sing Method Method 5 – Reminder Cards

Examples: Inside a desk drawer, on the bathroom mirror, on the fridge, on your dashboard, etc.

Recently I responded to an email that posed the question, “How well do these affirmations really work?” Below is the response that I sent the person who asked the question. There are a number of important points that will be helpful to others, so I’m reprinting the information. Here it is…

The answer is that it depends on you and how well you apply them. One person can take a single principle outlined in the affirmations and become so inspired that they make millions. Others can listen to all of the affirmations a couple of times and do nothing with them. Sorry I can’t be more definite than that, but that’s the truth.

I think that the better question to ask “are the Power Affirmations are based on sound principles that can lead to success?” The answer is absolutely. Here are some of the primary principles that they are based on:

1. The Power Affirmations are stated in the positive. We become what we think about most of the time–our dominating thoughts.

2. The power of repetition of positive thought and suggestion. Repetition mixed combined with belief and a positive enthusiasm is the fastest way to condition your subconscious mind. The whole adverstising industry is based upon repetition of suggestive thought aimed at getting people to buy their products. Does it work? Just take a look at the trillions of dollars American’s spend each year largely as the result of billions of dollars spent on advertising. Successful business people are not stupid. They spend a lot of money on advertising because they know repetition of thought leads to people taking action to buy their products.

3. These power affirmations are foundational. As you listen to the power affirmations, you will find that there is a natural progression to the thoughts within the sections or (“discs”) and the sections themselves. This is not by accident. I initially created the program for myself with no intention of selling it or even sharing it with others. I went through the books that had the greatest impact on my life and extracted the primary points that I wanted to condition in my mind and translated them into Power Affirmations.

4. The power of multisensory learning. What do I mean by this? We have 5 senses–sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. The more of the senses you can involve in learning, mixed with repetition and emotion, the faster you will learn. With the Power Affirmation recordings, you have an easy way to involve the senses of sound, sight, and touch (or feeling). Sound is obvious. You can involve the sense of sight by using the power affirmation posters or screen savers. Or just by looking at the list of affirmations in the eBook. Even more powerfully, using your creative vision and imagination. Feeling is involved when you add “physiology”–such moving your body with a feeling of certainty as you listen to or repeat the Power Affirmations. Tony Robins talks a lot about that concept in his books and seminars.

5. These affirmations are general. While there are specific concepts, there is no mention of specific goals or amounts of money, etc. Again this is by design so that anyone can use them. As you get better with using affirmations and more familiar with the language patterns, you will want to create specific Power Affirmations for your own situation–especially setting your Definite Major Purpose or Mission in life. For example, one of my personal power affirmations is related to reaching over 1,000,000 people with my free affirmations eBook and website by March 31, 2008. Or someone may want to target a specific weight amount if they over weight. But you have to learn to walk before you can run–and that’s where these affirmation recordings excel. You have to condition your mind so that your predominating thoughts are of success, health, happiness, prosperity, etc. in order for more specific affirmations to be effective. Then add power affirmations based on specific goals.

6. It’s best to use the affirmations in conjunction with a goal planning system. This is why I include an explanation of my RAP planning system in my eBook. It’s simple, but effective. That’s because you are organizing your plans on a daily basis around specific goals and measuring your progress daily. Even though the explanation of the system is only a few pages, this alone could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars to you. Why do I say that? I personally spent years of study and trial and error and thousands of dollars trying to find a way to plan and manage my life and my time. This is the ONLY system I have been able to consistently use (for several years now) to consistently achieve my goals. The key here is that the daily plans are ORGANIZED. While using a “to do” list is better than nothing, it’s generally ineffective and worse leads to stress and overwhelm. If you have any ambition (and obviously you do), if you create a random list of things you have to do and want to do, it will quickly become overwhelming if you don’t find a way to organize it. By the way, the idea for RAP came to me in a flash of inspiration while I was listening to my Power Affirmations.

7. The power of concentration and focus. When you read or listen to an audio recording, most of the information goes by so quickly that you don’t really have an opportunity to savor and meditate on a specific point in order to extract the full value. The recordings help you to focus your thoughts around the key points so that you are able to firmly plant it into your mind to give it the best opportunity to attract similar thoughts. This allows you to take advantage of the law of sowing and reaping–multiplication. This is a law of nature that you can easily see all around you.

For example, if you plant a single seed of corn, nurture it and care for it, eventually, it will bring forth a plant that has multiple ears of corn on it. And each ear of corn has multiple seeds. In fact, from that one seed of corn, not only are you able to grow enough to eat a portion of it, there is also more than enough to plant more seeds next season. Over a number of seasons of seedtime and harvest, that single seed of corn can lead to a whole field of corn (this is why I say super abundance is a law of nature–the multiplicative process of seedtime and harvest). Think of each thought as a seed. As it grows into maturity, it attracts a number of thoughts of a similar nature. Before long, the mind is saturated with these dominating thoughts. This is why it is so important to protect your mind from any kind of negative influence or thought suggestion. The best way to protect yourself is by continuously planting positive thoughts and nurturing them. And learning to recognize negative thoughts and avoiding them.

With agriculture, there is a definite season for seed time and harvest that operates like clockwork. You can’t plant a seed of corn and come back the next day to reap the harvest. The great thing about sowing positive seeds of thought is that there is no set time for the harvest to come. While time is a factor, there are other steps you can take to accelerate your progress–such as concentration.

Well, that’s all that I have time for for now. I’m sure if I thought about it, there’s a lot more I could say. But that’s because this has been my area of focus for a long time–really ever since I first read Think and Grow Rich back in the late 70′s. What is really important is that you get started immediately. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to know everything about affirmations before you will start to receive the benefits. Start with just listening daily and going through the RAP process. RAP will help you measure your personal progress. Be patient. Allow yourself to grow. Remember, seedtime and harvest. The harvest will come soon enough, but only if you sow the seeds and nurture them. It can come faster than you may currently think is possible–it’s all up to you.
