Children and Steroids In Youth Sports

Children and Steroids In Youth Sports

Steroids and our children are becoming tightly linked through our sports and recreation programs. This is not to say that all programs promote and participate in this venue but the facts are starting to come out and more and more children from Middle School to High School age are experimenting with steroids. We can look the other way as a society or we can do what some of the professional sports leagues have taken on. Educating the victims, yes the victims. Athletes at all levels suffer from the kid next store or the top ranked individual they must target to replace. Pro sports teams are moving in an educational training direction and our schools can benefit from lessons learned here to implement similar programs perhaps. Start administering education in the classroom. Think about it, if we took 15 minutes of each gym period for our children and discussed a topic like the effects of steroids on the body we might just turn this category of a nightmare into a success story. Our children, thanks in large part to the 24 hour media society we now live in, are constantly reminded of the polished professional athlete. We market to them constantly as we show off the top performing individuals and colleges. In my area we even promote the local area High School Sports on their own television show. So the kids are in constant reminder of who the best athletes are and how this one and that one are going to USC, CAL, Ohio State etc. There is a price to pay here folks and we can do something about it.

Education is the answer. If we design this into our systems of teaching at a young age we can turn this addiction around. We have proof by the way. With the invention of the automobile we learned about needing seatbelts. How? Because cars move at a rapid pace and tend to collide, at times, with other objects. People were getting hurt and in dying in some cases. So we engineered a restraint system. But think back to the 60′s through the late 80′s. No one was using them even after they were put in all cars. They were just an inconvenience to those generations that grew up without them. Then we started taking the message to the elementary schools. No the first people to click in are the kids. Of course we solved the adult problem by enforcing laws but our kids do click in as a force of habit not reminder. The same can be done for the negative effects of steroids on the body. It may look good short term and might even get a Division One College offer but at what price to your overall health?

If you truly need supplements and in most cases the all natural supplements are a good addition to anyone’s daily food intake then do your homework. Research the companies on the net and working with your professional physician or dietician plan a well balanced program for health and wellness. Companies like Mona Vie International are making great strides in providing a natural supplement made of 19 fruits lead in formulation by the acai berry. There is tremendous excitement around this berry from the Amazon and daily we hear of new results from people all over the globe being introduced to the acai berry as a great alternative to your daily health needs. But don’t stop there. Build a daily exercise and fitness program. If you follow all of these basic guidelines you will see, over time, that your body will respond and your health and wellness will be on a proper track towards an overall improved lifestyle.

Sport Mascot Designs and Their Impact on Sports Teams

Sport Mascot Designs and Their Impact on Sports Teams

The idea behind mascots is to select something for a competitive team, an animal, person or thing that is somehow supposed to bring the team good luck. It is not always about emulating the traits the selected mascots embody, although that may be the origins. It’s easy to see why a football team might want to call itself the Rams or the Tigers, but sport mascot designs include a wide range of things, even colors.

It may be more accurate to consider that the mascot is something to rally around, something that brings the community in closer association with the team. It’s a way for the fans of the team to identify with the players on the field. School colors work in much the same way. If the team has selected an animal like a cougar as its mascot, then you are likely to see all manner of representation of cougars for the fans. From shirts to jackets and shoes to key chains, the image of the cougar marks those who carry or wear them as fans that support that team.

Some might consider it simply a clever marketing ploy, one facet of sports promotion. Revenue generated from the sale of mascot emblazoned trinkets and gear provides a means to defray the cost of travel and equipment for the team itself. Alumni are certainly another source of revenue, and they absolutely love their mascots. It is from the alumnus, that usually seen a more extreme form of mascot collection.

The mascot seems to be more than just that, the commercial side pales when compared to the motivational possibilities. The mascot doesn’t just give team a name, It gives them an identity. Even when they’re not practicing on the field were actually playing a game is not unusual for the players to wear the jacket’s emblazoned with their mascot everywhere. It becomes a part of their persona, who they are.

Likewise, fans absolutely love to wear jerseys like the ones the players sport on the field. The more closely they resemble the actual jerseys, the more coveted they are. Fans even choose their favorite player, and wear jerseys with their players name emblazoned on the back. It is a show of camaraderie and belonging.

For many universities, the mascot is a part of the history and culture of the school, deeply ingrained in the student body. The mascot along with the trophies in the glory case proudly displayed in the ministration buildings even play a role in recruiting. Ironically, the exact history of the mascots has been long lost. But no matter every school will have a story behind its mascot. The United States Air Force Academy is a reasonably young university, and he chose as its mascot the falcon. That they selected a bird is probably not a surprise because the falcon because it is known as the fighter jet of the avian world.

But not everything about mascots is without controversy. Names and references to items, religious practices and tribes of Native Americans have long caused friction. In 2005, the incidental aseptic for how they use of these mascots. They may be detained is a Native American symbol or name as a mascot from participating in a championship game under their jurisdiction.

One of the effective universities with Florida State, whose mascot, the Seminole, named after the Seminole tribe of the southeastern United States, would make them ineligible, threatened to sue the NCAA. What made this conflict interesting is the Seminole tribes within Florida loudly supported FSUs use of the icon. Seminole tribes outside of Florida were very much against it. It’s a clear example of the emotions sport mascot designs can generate, which is precisely what they are suppose to do.

Recreational Sports Leagues – A Great Homeschool Alternative

Recreational Sports Leagues – A Great Homeschool Alternative

My children were homeschooled and they played sports; soccer, swimming, baseball. They loved the physical activity! Although we are proud of their achievements in sports, I cannot say that either of my boys will be the next Tiger Woods. (That’s a good thing.) They enjoy, even love sports! Although they have wonderful skills for recreational league soccer, for example, we did not aspire for greatness in that arena.

Recreational league sports are so fun! They require minimal commitment, and they are less competitive than other teams. There is another way to go: competitive sports teams. Competitive teams (Baseball Little League, high school varsity teams, Select Soccer teams, etc.) are a completely different ball game, so to speak. They require many more hours of practice, games are much farther away, and it has a greater financial commitment as well.

When you look at sports teams, weigh your options carefully. If your child is there to have fun, then pursue a recreational league. If your child is passionate and gifted in a sport, then consider a more competitive league. It is not necessary to aspire for greatness when your child merely has potential. Remember, they can always enjoy a sport and excel within their peers on the recreational league. The costs of a competitive sports league can be great, financially and in terms of time. You may want to reserve those experiences only if your child is both gifted AND passionate about the sport.

Look at it this way; my husband loves to play softball. He enjoys playing on our church softball team, where he can have a good day or a bad day, but always have fun. If he were put on a semi-pro adult softball league (yes, that is a real situation – we have had friends on those teams!) then he would be frustrated and feel like a failure. You want your kids to have fun, so make sure they enjoy the situation.

And remember, whether recreational league or competitive league, it can all go on your high school homeschool transcript!

Archery Today is For Sports and Recreation

Archery Today is For Sports and Recreation

When you speak of archery, bows and arrows quickly come to mind. Long ago they were used as weapons for protection against an enemy or as a tool for hunting but today they are used mainly for sport and recreation.

Through the ages, the practice of using bows and arrows by soldiers during the wars proved difficult and ineffective due to the rigid trainings and special skills needed to use them. Firearms were then discovered and soldiers found it a lot easier to use, aside from the fact that those who did not possess these firearms started getting defeated in wars one after another. As a result, bows and arrows slowly but surely found its way out of the field.

Nowadays, archery is still being played and practiced, albeit occasionally, but more as a sports activity. Even so, the use of bows and arrows was an important episode in our history and one archers like to remember.

There are different kinds of archery bows, for example the longbow, shortbow, flatbow, crossbow and compound bow.

From its name, the longbow can be described as being long and heavy – its length the same as the user’s height, sometimes even longer.

The shortbow, in sharp contrast, is shorter in length and is very light. Because of its short range feature, it is best used in hunting activities.

Another archery bow is the flatbow whose limb is wider than the first two types and whose shape is rectangular.

There is also the crossbow which has horizontally-mounted limbs.

A compound bow has a levering system of levers and pulleys.

Shafts comprise an arrow. The front part is called an arrowhead and is usually made of metal or other similar material. It is used in targeting or aiming at a point. To be able to hit the target, an archer has to maintain correct body and eye postures, as well as observe the proper way of positioning the bow.

Two styles practiced by an archer in arrow shooting are the sight shooting and the instinctive shooting. Instinctive shooting requires the archer to totally focus on his target while shooting the arrow. The archer also needs extensive practice to perfect the act. In sight shooting, the archer can move and reset the pins to where he finds it much easier to do. Because of its simpler technology, sight shooting has become the favorite among most archers today.

Fishing Sports Recreation

Fishing Sports Recreation

We all love fishing sports recreation and in keeping with the theme I have heard so many good fishing jokes that I thought I would share some of these with you.

The first one goes like this:

An old man goes out onto the ice and cuts a hole in it and throws in a line. He is there for nearly an hour and catches nothing. Then a younger boy comes out onto the ice and cuts a hole in it not too far away from the old man and throws in a line. Inside of one minute a Largemouth Bass has hooked himself onto the line and the boy drags it in. The old man cannot believe the boys luck and continues to fish.

The boy dropped his line in again and the same thing happened. The old man is in total disbelief and after about the 6th fish he cannot contain himself any longer and he goes over to confront the boy. “I cannot believe it, I have been here over an hour and caught nothing and you have been here for half and hour and caught a half a dozen fish. How do you do it?”

“Roo raft takup ra rums raam!” The boy said.

“What was that?” The old man asked.

Again the boy responded, “Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm!”

“Look I cannot understand anything you are saying” said the old man.

The boy spat into his hand and said “You have to keep the worms warm!”

My second contribution is:

A pastor, a priest and a rabbi were out for the day to go fishing. After getting into the boat they had just pulled away from the dock when the rabbi exclaimed “stop the boat I forgot the coffee!” The pastor who was driving the boat offered to take the rabbi back to shore and the rabbi said “oh no need I will be right back”. The rabbi quickly jumped out of the boat and literally ran across the top of the water to get to the shore and then to his car to fetch the coffee. He then ran back across the water and got back in the boat.

Well the pastor not wanting to be shown up by the rabbi said “oh my I forgot the sandwiches” and quickly jumped out of the boat to attempt running across the water like the rabbi had, but instead sank quickly to the bottom of the lake. With that the priest looked angrily at the rabbi and said “That’s not fair, you should have shown him where the rocks were!”

Having a love of fishing sports recreation, fishers worldwide all enjoy the sport and also have too much time on our hands from the look of the humor.

Sports Management Not For The Faint Hearted

Sports Management Not For The Faint Hearted

There are 2 types of sports clubs; those that offer multiple disciplines in sport and those that only offer one. The more disciplines a club offers and the bigger its membership base, the more powerful it becomes. Single discipline clubs tend to be smaller than multi-discipline clubs, but in certain cases they too can rise to great power. Clubs can offer these disciplines at an amateur or professional level, or both. Clubs also offer a range of programmes including competitive, recreational and instructional programmes.

The competitive programmes are usually held in different leagues to ensure that players of all levels get a chance to compete. There are also a variety of championships and tournaments that individuals are entitled to enter under the club name. If a club is lucky and has sponsorships or enough members to bolster its coffers, it may have enough money to subsidise tracksuits or t-shirts for its members so that when they do compete in tournaments they are able to wear club colours. It is often the smaller recreational clubs who don’t have identifying club colours, but they usually make up for it with club spirit. Bigger, more professional clubs may have club tracksuits, t-shirts and badges to identify themselves. They may have an established fan base and will probably have modern training facilities.

All clubs require their members to pay membership fees. That is part of how they make their money. Most businesses are happy enough to sponsor prizes for once off occasions like a championship finals day or a tournament but are very reluctant to provide long-term sponsorship, unless the club is big and well known and popular within the community. Being on a winning streak also helps. Then they are only too happy to be associated with the club on a long-term basis, which is handy for buying all the modern training equipment. If the team is really big and successful they could have TV rights, there could be transfer fees from players and in some cases there is merchandising. If you earn an income from merchandising then you know that you have hit the big time.

Wikipedia says that sports management is “a field of education and vocation concerning the business aspect of sport. Some examples of sport managers include the front office system in professional sports, college sports managers, recreational sport managers, sports marketing, event management, facility management, and sports information.”

I think that means that sports management takes care of all the admin in sport as well as all of the organising and arranging. It probably includes a lot of the functions of a committee i.e. the secretary for notes and paperwork, the treasurer for money, the chairperson for general management purposes. Without a structure in place to take care of these tasks there would be chaos and nothing would ever get done. No events would be organised, no training would take place, there would never be any money or if there was, no one would know where it was or how to get hold of it or what to spend it on (other than themselves). Worst of all there would be no one to complain to because with no one in charge who is there to blame?

The bigger the club the more complicated sports management becomes, presumably. If the club is a multi-disciplined club then there may be many subcommittees for each of the disciplines. They would all have a representative on the large overriding committee to report on activities and functioning. The overriding committee would have to keep on top of all the subcommittees and know what is going on in all of them and help them sort out their problems as they arise or delegate tasks for each sub-clubs that would help with the overall running of the club. It would be quite a monumental undertaking and would require great organisational skills.

In cases like this it may help to have an online sports management system, which simplifies a lot of admin tasks and makes the information easily accessible and easily understandable once you have accessed it. An online management system will also allow the club to store all kinds of valuable data such as information on opposition players, opposition weaknesses as well as own team weaknesses, opposition strengths and own team strengths. You can store information on each game and statistics related to the game in general. The more information that you gain and store the more your teams benefit.

Online sports management systems allow you to be organised and efficient as well as keep up to date on all relevant information. All of this is to the benefit of the club and will help to make the club a winning club as well as a powerful one.

The Mercury Cougar Sports Car Was Born On the Nascar Auto Racing Circuit

The Mercury Cougar Sports Car Was Born On the Nascar Auto Racing Circuit

You may well have thought that the Mercury Cougar auto that the origins of the Mercury Cougar auto were nothing more than a whale sized version of simple Ford Thunderbird car. Yet many are surprised that the history and development of this classic American sportscar rather was that of the NASCAR legendary Mercury “Pony Car”, which kicked nothing but but “Butt” on the Trans-Am Automobile racing circuit.

Originally Lincoln- Mercury (considered at the time to be the luxury end of Ford Motor Corporation), had devised the idea of developing, designing and marketing a small sized sports car. The germ of this idea had started as early as February 1963 with the idea in the works of this smaller sports type vehicle to be sold within the North American automobile market.

But it was the success of the Ford Mustang product that finally put the pedal to the metal (or the design and marketing staff’s ok and budgeting of departmental project funding). It is said that nothing drives a project the automobile industry than the potential of excellent sales figures and profitability’s. Even the name of the vehicle product “Cougar” is not totally unique. Cougar is in the same vein as “Mustang” – both being sleek fast racing animals.

Although the Cougar was also built on a 111 inch wheelbase similar to the mustang auto sports car, the Cougar was rather three inches and half inches shorter than its cousin – the Thunderbird. Underneath the elegant sheet metal of the Cougar was a Mustang, so to speak. In actuality the Cougar shared with its cousins – the sporty Mustang, and the dourer family vehicle – the Ford Falcon (which was also known in the Canadian market as the Ford Frontenac product. The Ford Mustang had the greatest fortune of being born from the Ford Falcon product line. Mustang enthusiasts owe a great debt of gratitude to a so called compact “Family” car. The Ford Falcon allowed both the Mustang car project as well as the Cougar car product a quick to develop, cheap to produce as well as a proven and durable base platform. Even the dash of the early Mustangs was a direct copy of the Falcons.

Underneath all of the glitter of its elegant sheet metal the Cougar car was all Mustang, using the exact same Falcon front suspension and a solid rear axle with four-leaf springs. A base 289 cubic inch V-8 made 200 bhp (gross), but the real action came in the guise of a 390 cubic inch V-8 that made 320 bhp. A GT option included a performance handling package and power disc brakes that replaced more standard front brake drums. Finally special GT wheels rounded out the package.

It has been said that Lincoln Mercury’s chief designer had envisioned the Cougar as an elegant European sports car, along the lines of the Jaguar Mark 2. How was it that the Cougar went racing?

In 1967 Lincoln Mercury turned to Bud Moore to be the point man for a shot at the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. Team Cougar made up of drivers, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Formula 1 driver Peter Revson and NASCAR driver Dave Pearson came in second in Ford Mustang’s team. In 1968 then under the aegis of Moore, driver DeWayne “Tiny” Lund went on to capture the NASCAR Grand Touring Championship.

So where and how did the Cougar go wrong and in the end become a rather non defined wishy washy bloated luxo sort of sports car by the end of its automobile production lifetime? What proved to be this product and projects undoing was the lack of true comprehension from the direct Mercury as well as Ford staff and executives as to what this car’s clear and distinct market was. It may be said that at the best they were disinterested and at the worst clueless and greedy. This lack of market focus, as well as not knowing and perceiving the needs and desires of the potential Cougar customer market proved to be the Cougar’s undoing. By the 1969 product introduction the Cougar was a little longer and a little wider. From then on it was only a short decent into landau roofs as well as the opera window type styling and options of the day. Once started this downward trend and spiral of the Cougar was inevitable. The halcyon years of the early Cougar – specifically the early Cougar model years of 1967 – 70 remain a time when the Cougar’s roar boomed out of dual exhausts and the sign of a car that had some bite to it.
