Choosing A Monologue For Kids And Teens – Hints For A Successful Audition

Choosing A Monologue For Kids And Teens – Hints For A Successful Audition

What is the right monologue for you? Kids and teens are often faced with this question.

Whether you are auditioning for a school or community play, a job, an agent or manager or even

a Performing Arts College your choice of monologue will have a lot to do with how successful

you will be.

Not too long ago, my son was auditioning for several Performing Arts Colleges and although he

had participated in many theater productions as a kid, now that he was a teenager, we were advised

to have him work with a monologue coach. After calling several theater professionals, whose opinion

I trusted, I came up with the name of a person that seemed to fit our needs. I proceeded

to call him, to check his availability, and to conduct a phone interview. The phone call went well and, consequently, we set up the initial meeting. What follows is the process that they went through in order to determine the perfect monologue for my teenage son.

Before the first meeting the monologue coach asked me to describe my son’s physical characteristics, training, and what roles (if any) he had played over the years.

The coach chose six monologues he thought might be suitable and brought them to the first

coaching session. He then presented them to my son. They read through each monologue and talked about what was the most comfortable (in terms of delivery) and appropriate for the piece.

My son came away from the first session with four monologues to consider. His coach asked him to obtain a copy of the entire play from which each monologue was taken, and to read through each one in its entirety.

During the next coaching session, my son worked on all four pieces. He and the coach then decided to eliminate one more of the monologues, as it did not suit my son well and he, in fact, did not have any interest in performing it.

Having selected three suitable pieces, that both the coach and my son felt were believable pieces for a young “all American boy next door” type to perform, they worked on these pieces for the next four weeks. There was one lesson per week. My son also rehearsed at home in front of the mirror in between lessons.

This young actor became very comfortable with the monologues and confident in his delivery. He subsequently auditioned for six theater schools and was admitted to all of them.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to employ a monologue coach, however, anyone can employ the same process as outlined above. The most important thing that we learned from the experience is that the monologue you choose must be suitable to you. This means that a person of your “type” must be believable when you speak and act the words of the character you’ve chosen to portray. For example, an “all American” type is not always going to be believable playing the role of an “introverted geek”, and vice versa. The world takes all kinds and so does the theater. Be honest with yourself. There are suitable roles for everyone. This is why it is so very important to read the entire play from which your monologue is taken. You need to know the character’s frame of reference (where he or she is coming from) and where he fits in terms of the plot, and other characters in the play. Besides, especially at college auditions, you may be asked about the plot of the play from which your monologue is taken. Remember, when you audition, the casting director or professor doesn’t usually know you personally. You must convince them that you have the ability to play whatever character you’ve chosen. Choose your monologue carefully, rehearse often and make them believe! You should do well on your auditions.

Beverly Stone has volunteered with a performing arts kids group for the past ten years. During this time she has worked in various capacities on the production of many shows but her main job has been to facilitate the training of the group’s members. Long Distance Relationships – 8 Tips For Making Yours Fun, Fulfilling and Successful!

Long Distance Relationships – 8 Tips For Making Yours Fun, Fulfilling and Successful!

“Everything would have been fine if we lived in the same town/state/country,” is the common reason many men and women give for a long distance relationship not working out.

Admitted, distance can put an enormous strain on a relationship, but claiming that “distance” is the only reason a relationship didn’t work out or can not work is putting your hands over your ears and shouting, “la-la-la-la-la-la- land” because the truth is too much to handle.

I’ve met many men and women who won’t even try long distance relationships because according to them “Long distance relationships just don’t work”.

That simply isn’t true! Long distance relationships CAN and DO work if the two individuals involved want it to. In my opinion, the question is not “Do long distance relationships work?” but rather “Do both of you want to make it work?” If you both want to make it work, distance is just another obstacle that two people who truly love each other can easily overcome — if they really want to.

These simple to follow tips will help your long distance relationship not only survive distance, they’ll also help you lay a strong foundation for a relationship that is fun, fulfilling and successful!

1. Talk at least once a week

Technology has made it easier than ever to keep in touch long distance. A few quick emails, text messages and phone calls at least once a day (or even once a week) create a sense of being fully engaged in each other’s lives. Your relationship success depends on you being connected, so set aside uninterrupted talk-time to “catch up” on each other’s lives.

If the other person can’t make time for even a 10 minutes’ conversation, but has time to go out with friends, go to a party, go the gym, cook or even sleep, get a clue, that person isn’t into you as you want to think. If the other person is truly interested in you, he or she’ll show all signs of not only wanting to continue the relationship but to move closer. And if s/he truly loves you that much, s/he’ll not only create the time for you, s/he’ll put talking to you top most priority on his/her list of things to do. You on the other hand have to be realistic and not try to suck up all his/her time because you’re dripping with neediness.

2. Cultivate independent but inter-dependent lives

The time between calls and in-person reunions can be pure torture if you’re spending all your time apart obsessing about the other person. You may find that you’ve put everything on hold to the point that no one else and nothing else is important or meaningful in life except being with him or her. You’re consumed with constantly trying to test his or her love for you; doing things to try to make his or her need you, telling him or her about your “other admirers” etc. If s/he doesn’t call or email you when you expect him/her to, you feel restlessness, rejected and unwanted. Some people become so needy that the other person just shuts down emotionally.

Instead of wasting so much time and emotions acting all clingy, needy and controlling, use the “distance” to develop and grow as an individual with your own independent life and who enjoys your own company. You’ll feel more positively about “distance” when you feel positive about yourself, the other person, the relationship and life in general. A positive outlook is very important to the success of a LDR.

3. Let go of fear of abandonment/loss

Distance has a way of playing up anxiety and fear of the unknown. You miss him/her so much that you start imagining him/her cheating on you even when deep down you know that s/he is not the cheating type. Even when s/he has given you no reason to think that s/he might cheat, you tell yourself, “You just never know” or “Don’t be a fool!”

If you are not fully prepared to trust your man or woman you have no business being in a long distance relationship because in LDRs, trust is everything. Without trust, there is little point in having the relationship. Without trust sustaining a long distance relationship is impossible.

Discuss your anxiety and fears with him or her and once you get the reassurance you need, LET IT GO. Truth is, if s/he wants to cheat, s/he will and there is nothing you can do about it. Give your mind some rest and concentrate on building a strong foundation for your relationship. It also helps for you to make extra efforts to be reliable, to do what you say you are going to do and to show that you’re trustworthy. Trust cuts both ways!

4. Keep that sense of fun and romance alive

One of the most difficult things about long distance relationships is that you can’t just turn to your man or woman and say “let’s go for a walk in the park”, or just drop in and ask him or her out for a drink. In the absence of these seemingly insignificant shared moments that most people in proximity relationships take for granted, it’s easy for two people to become so stuck in the waiting, and the future, that they completely forget about now. The relationship slowly loses it’s spark and eventually fades out.

To avoid this, try as much as possible to go out on “virtual dates”. For example, decide to go watch the latest movie on the same day and then later call the other to share experiences, thoughts and opinions. Better yet, if time zones allow and if it’s cost effective, rent a movie and watch it “together” with the other person on the phone. You can also play cards or games over the internet etc. And don’t forget to flirt, seduce and tell him or her just how much s/he means to you and how much you love him or her. The important thing is to take the necessary steps to keep the sense of fun, shared interests, romance and passion alive.

5. Create a supportive environment

There’ll be times when it seems like the other person is not bothered by distance, is happy that you’re apart, or is having more fun. This makes you feel like you are the only one who “cares”. So instead of trying to understand what’s causing him or her to act that way, be supportive of whatever they’re going through and encouraging of his or her efforts given what the two of you have to deal with, you start instructing, coaching, and scolding the other person for not “caring” about you or the relationship. Eventually all conversations become about how the relationship is neither right nor going anywhere. And true enough, you find yourselves living down to your own expectations.

It’s had enough to have a long distance relationship without the constant nagging, instructing, coaching, and scolding of someone who consistently treats the relationship as a one person’s property or business. Use that excess energy to create a supportive environment that fosters understanding, reassurance and cooperation. Sometimes all you need to do is listen. Don’t judge and don’t try to fix. Just listen. You can also bounce ideas off him or her, etc. Work as allies with the same goal.

6. Always have a plan for the next in-person reunion

Just knowing when you’ll see each other again makes it easier to handle long distance relationships. Make the planning and preparing for the reunion a joint project. Share your thoughts and dreams of your re-union on a regular basis. This can make your coming together much more exciting, meaningful and special.

Be careful, though. Don’t let expectations of how fantastic your reunion is going to be build too high as the reality often doesn’t match up to the fantasy. Expect there to be awkward silences, many down times and even arguments. It’s a relationship not a fantasy!

7. Make plans for one of you to move

Someone must move at some point in order to keep the relationship together. If you’re both eager to stay together, then set a date for getting together – either moving in or, at least, living in the same town and “dating”. However, if it’s a new relationship or a relationship on shaky grounds hold off the “future together” talk until you both feel that the relationship has matured, is more stable or until the other person is ready. If the other person is not ready, it doesn’t matter how much you want it, it’s never going to happen. The “I am not going to wait forever” may just become “It’s over”

8. Ignore people who say long distance relationships don’t work

It’s not easy and there are no guarantees — same as in all relationships. But don’t run away from your long-distance relationship because everyone says “Long distance relationships don’t and won’t work”. Long distance relationships have worked and can work for you if you are willing to do the hard work. If you’re both emotionally mature enough, and are devoted enough, distance can teach both of you to exercise deeper connections, and provide for objective and honest assessment of your feelings for the each other. Distance can also encourage a stronger foundation for the development of your relationship.

At a time when careers increasingly demand greater mobility, long distance relationships are not only a very attractive option, they may very well be the future.

Not even distance can stop true love!

Successful Marketing for Home Based Businesses

Successful Marketing for Home Based Businesses

‘A successful marketing strategy is not based on doing what you like but liking what you do…’

Are you looking for information to build and grow a home-based business? If so, you are in the right place! Here you will find information on implementing a successful marketing campaign and growing your home based business.

The Problem

Many home-based business owners don’t know how to best market their businesses. Some ignore marketing altogether, hoping that customers or website visitors will appear out of thin air. Others market in a scattershot way producing untargeted traffic or unqualified prospects. Either approach will keep you from achieving your business potential and reaching your financial goals and possibly even damage your reputation.

The Solution

Whether you’ve been thinking about starting a home business or you’re already a seasoned home-based business owner, the principle remains the same. Your business’ survival and success rests on how effectively you market your business or product. Examine some of the following marketing strategies and tools to help you boost your home based business profits.

Home-Based Business Advantage

Low overhead costs, no commute to work and the ability to work around your children are some of the few advantages for home based business owners. Gear your marketing efforts to capitalize on these and other home-based strengths including:

Adaptability – Information Technology has escalated the rate of change in the marketplace. To survive and thrive, you must be prepared to act, and act quickly. As a home-based business owner, you can make adjustments instantly, without having to cut through the red tape of bureaucratic decision-making procedures common in larger businesses.

Technology – Computers, the Internet, PDA’s, and other emerging technologies can take home based businesses to a more level playing field with bigger companies, empowering home based business owners to accomplish tasks that used to require hiring staff to perform. Try to keep up-to-speed with technology.

Flexibility. – Unlike traditional businesses that require full-time attention and high overhead costs, home based businesses can be operated part-time, at low cost, and depending on your financial goals can be phased into full-time operations.

Taking Your Business To The Next Level

A common reason home businesses fail is because owners neglect the up-front planning needed to position their ventures. Once you have defined your market position and where you want to take your business in the 12 months you will have moved one step closer to success.

If you already have a business begin by taking inventory of where your business is right now. What specific goods and services do you provide? How do you set yourself apart? What is your business’ reputation? How are you perceived by your customers or clients as far as your prices, reliability, and other elements of your products or services?

The next step is to project where you want to take your business in the 12 months. What market position do you want to occupy? Is the niche market you want large enough? How will your benefits outsell those provided by the competition? Do you have the ability, capital, resources and support to make your market position a reality? Your answers will give you the information you need to begin designing or updating your marketing plan.

Planning Ahead

Once you have determined where you want to go, outline the essential steps to get there. Begin by writing a one sentence purpose (mission) statement for your marketing campaign. The rest of your plan should include a brief description of each of the following:

Benefits of your products and services.

Your target market.

What marketing tools will best help you achieve your mission.

Your market niche. What sets you apart in the market place.

Your marketing budget.

Keep your marketing plan brief. The more concise you make your marketing plan, the more effective it will be in evaluating your marketing efforts.

Finding Your Niche

This is often the hardest task for a beginning home-based business owner but also one of the most crucial. In order for your venture to survive in a competitive marketplace, you must distinguish yourself from other businesses and find a niche. What makes your business unique? Why should someone choose to buy from you over a competitor? Prospective clients want to know. If you can give them a compelling answer, you will position yourself as a leader in your industry boosting your profit potential. Research your market thoroughly before jumping in.

Marketing Tools

No matter how you choose to publicize your business, one quality will set you apart from your competitors: The ability to write effective ad copy. You’re vying for the attention of consumers bombarded each day with advertisements. It is estimated that the average person is exposed to over 1,200 advertising messages per DAY! Make sure your advertisement stands out from the rest of this ‘noise’.

When you have determined your market position and drawn up a marketing plan you are ready to start spreading the word about your products and services. One effective way is using the existing offline media in your area. You have a variety of media choices depending upon your target market and your advertising budget including magazines, newspapers, television, radio, and the internet. Start by evaluating how and where your competitors advertise. What’s working for them? Take their best ideas; then design your own winning layout, positioning yourself as having the best offer.

The Importance of Headlines

As the first phrases seen in advertising copy, headlines should arouse enough interest in the reader so that they will want to read or listen on to learn more about your business or product. To get ideas about what headlines will work best for you, scan different types of ad copy, particularly those from your competitors. Create a swipe file of different ads and ideas that you come across from different sources. But remember to be careful of using other peoples copyrighted material.

Capture your customer’s interest with a compelling statement of offer

Highlight the most important benefits

Offer extreme value

Make a call strong call to action.

Testing Your Ads

Advertising can be expensive, but for just about any business a mandatory investment. To get the most out of your ads, test them by the following criteria:

What is the quantity of leads or prospects that the ad generates? Compare this amount in terms of a unit cost of advertising (dollars in advertising per leads generated).

How many of these leads convert into sales? Different advertising media due to the audiences they target will vary in the numbers of actual closes.

Continually check the response from your ads, make changes or run a new ad if necessary. Use ad trackers and keep testing, testing testing until you achieve the response required.

Internet Marketing

Imagine! You can have a salesperson working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week even while you sleep. A web site and effective use of e-mail marketing can turn your small home-based business into a global business putting you on a level playing field with large corporations. With easy and afforbable web design tools getting a web site up and running is within reach of everybody.

Sell Benefits Not Features!

Any seasoned business owner knows that it costs five times more to sell to a new prospect than to an existing client. Studies show that each satisfied customer will spread the good word about your business to at least one other person. On the reverse side of the coin a dissatisfied customer will complain to up to five or ten potential customers. Your mission in getting customer referrals to turn passive satisfied customers into actively enthusiastic supporters who will promote your business. The best way to do this is through:

Offering outstanding value to your customers

Delivering your product on time.

Solving customer’s problems.

Maintaining regular contact with customers through feedback forms

Following up your customers regularly.

Creating long-term relationships with customers.

Personalising your product or service.

Finally…

Whether you’re just launching your home based business or have been building one for years, don’t allow lack of information keep you from achieving your financial dreams. Study your marketing options and decide which marketing strategy will best position you for long-term success.

Successful Relationships – Mining Relationship Gold

Successful Relationships – Mining Relationship Gold

This brief article shows how we neglect our relationships and clarifies the utter importance of relationships . . . while explaining a powerful strategy for getting the most of all your relationships and mining the gold within each and every relationship in your life.

Please let me say from the beginning that I am a relationship specialist, and I have done relationship therapy and coaching for almost thirty years. Now, I want you to know that a few years ago I suffered a near death experience (NDE), in which I learned just how essential relationships truly are to all of us . . . even more essential than I had dreamed!

This article will detail one of the insights I gained from my tragic but extremely helpful NDE, along with a perspective resulting from my long career as a relationship therapist.

How We Neglect Relationships

We don’t mean to neglect our important relationships — and they are all important! — begins in our minds when we tell ourselves a fictional story. The story varies but goes something like this:

“A few of my relationships are important. I like some people in my family, and I have close friends and colleagues . . . but I don’t have time to take an interest in many of the people in my life. And I have no patience for problems that may occur in my relationships.”

Now when things go wrong, such as having an argument with a family member, we often think thoughts like these:

“To heck with him, I don’t have time for any grief, if he wants to get mad at me, let him! I won’t speak to him for years . . . I’ll pretend like he doesn’t exist. I don’t want any part of my brother because he’s an idiot! If he calls me again, I simply will not answer the phone!”

Another way we neglect relationships is simply to spend very little time getting to know people, and not taking an interest in more distant family members or friends, or to forget about people and just concentrate on ourselves.

A Case In Point

About a decade ago, a family member I hardly knew came to see me. He brought his wife and we had dinner together. Before he left I promised I’d go and visit him at his house very soon.

Well, I got busy and didn’t go . . . his wife died a few months later.

Then I heard he was struggling to keep his interest in living, and I told myself I’d go and cheer him up. But I got busy and guess what? I didn’t go.

He died a few weeks later.

Ever since then, I have been angry with myself. Oh, how I wish I had taken more of an interest in him. He seemed so interesting, and so wonderful, yet I had no time for this man, a member of my extended family, who had always lived just under my radar.

Sadly, I squandered an opportunity that will never come again. He’s gone. She’s gone. And I didn’t even take the time to go to him in his hour of need.

What a jerk . . . I was!

Now, I would give anything to have another chance to be there for that wonderful couple. At this man’s funeral, I discovered something I didn’t know about him. I learned he and I were members of the same fraternity . . . a secret no one in the family had realized.

I was stunned to learn that he and I had held strikingly similar views on many things, that he and I were brothers in many senses of the word, and yet my stupidity had kept me from getting to know him and becoming his friend and ally.

What an incredible opportunity I missed. What kinds of things might we have done together? What a great relationship this might have been for both of us!

I am loathe to admit this, but this is only one tragic story of its kind in my life. Now, I can hardly believe I was like that . . . or I had made such foolish decisions . . . how blind I have been.

There are countless ways to neglect or tear down our relationships, and it never pays . . . it’s always foolhardy! Every single relationship in your life is like a bank account with all kinds of deposits in it.

Neglect a relationship, and you lose. Along with many other people. The ripples go out for a long ways when we toss a pebble into the ocean of human relationships. And those ripples touch so many lives in so many ways.

Before my NDE, I made lots of assumptions about my relationships and took them for granted. I made very little effort to go out of my way for anyone, unless it benefitted me in some fashion. How sad . . . how short-sighted!

But after my NDE, I try to take every opportunity to see the beauty in people, and to explore my relationships, and ultimately to mine the gold that lies dormant within each and every one. And, believe me, there is unseen gold in all of them!

Now I see relationship problems in a new light: all problems are worth solving! Your relationships are worth the effort. Taking the easy way out will only hurt you, in the end, and detract from your happiness . . . and peace of mind.

A Powerful Strategy For Mining Your Relationships

Every relationship in your life has a hidden gift for you, waiting in its hands. Sometimes the gift amounts to an important life lesson and other times it may be a chance at shared joy and comradeship. In other situations, it may be a material blessing. You never know. Why not begin to cash in on those gifts in more proactive ways?

Do a little relationship inventory and examine each relationship, good and bad, in your life, and ask yourself what you could do to advance each one to a higher level.

Then go out and do it . . . one relationship at a time. Communicate. Open some new doors. Open your heart to newfound happiness. Love people with more of your heart. Give more of yourself.

While you’re at it, be sure to remember and use this knowledge . . . The greatest gift of all is the one you can give someone. Your support and encouragement may make all the difference to someone in your life. Communicate with people. Connect with them. Give of yourself to all your relationships and the world of happiness and joy will open to you. Devote a little time to a relationship you may have neglected or never quite appreciated, and great things are sure to happen. Greater happiness and success will be yours.

Financing Sources and Types to Ensure Successful

Financing Sources and Types to Ensure Successful

Money is of extreme importance nowadays. Almost

everything that we do involves money. The same is true

if one wants to venture into business or buy a home

which is one of the basic needs for survival. Financing

or supplying of funds in business is a must to make it

grow and achieve the desired expected profit (together

with the right planning and managing). Common mistakes

encountered by new entrepreneurs are wrong financing

sources, underestimated amount needed for capital and

inflexible financing types. These problems however can

be prevented by careful planning and analysis of the

various factors involved in starting a business.

In general, business people can choose from the two

types of financing, the debt and equity financing.

Equity financing is the type commonly used by small or

growth stage entrepreneurs. The sources for this type

involves the center of influence that trusts the

entrepreneur, such as friends, relatives, family

members and other people interested in investing their

money in the business. However there are also

capitalists who are ready to take the risk of financing

small businesses. These capitalists may include

financial institutions, authorized government agencies

or well-to-do individuals in society. There are also

venture capitalists that finance new business in the

industry to get equity. Businesses that have been in

the industry from three to five years are preferred by

venture capitalists. They have various methods to

manage or deal with the businesses that use their

financing or invested money. They can influence the

decision making policies of the business in the event

its performance does not come up with the expected

result.

Another general type of financing is debt financing.

This type has varied sources which include Small

Business Administration Loans, commercial loans through

banks and personal loans from family, relatives and

friends. The government recognizes the importance of

business in the economy of the country and that is why

they offer programs that can encourage the growth of

small enterprise by having their own financing agencies

tp help a lot of young business people and

entrepreneurs. Debt financing through banks is the

traditional means to fund a business. The banks act as

a short term lender for the business person to have the

needed money to buy equipment and machineries necessary

for the business to flourish. The SBA or Small Business

Administration Loans are used in the case of local

banks. The loan that can be acquired can be from $5,000

to $2,000,000.

From these two general types of financing branch the

various kinds of financing involved – not just in

business but in other fields as well. A few of which

are piggyback financing, owner financing and creative

financing. Piggyback financing is used by home buyers

who want to avoid mortgage insurance which is required

when the mortgage is more than 80 percent of the

purchase price. Through piggyback financing, the

borrower can have two mortgages with costs that may

vary. Owner financing happens when the owner or seller

of the property is the one financing the buyer so in

this case the owner acts as the bank. The buyer in turn

can pay the needed amount monthly or whatever may be

the agreement instead of going to the bank for

financing. Creative financing happens when the house

buyer has a third party lending institution which can

be a bank or a loan agency.

7 Tricks to Catch a Man’s Attention and Interest Fast! This Is What Most Successful Women Use

Men are attracted to beautiful women, but it is not always the physical beauty that attracts men. A host of other qualities that women possess also make them very attractive for men. If you want to catch a man’s attraction fast then you need to focus on the following seven points.

Physical beauty
It is no secret that men are attracted to beautiful women and vice versa. However, if you want to speed up the process then you need to have a flawless face and a great well toned body. There are many women who complain that they are fat or thick due to their bone structure, however, this is not true. If it was true then you would have seen a fat skeleton. Get into shape and take care of your face and skin.

Multifaceted personality
If you have a one-dimensional personality then you will be able to attract a man but will not be able to keep his interest in you for longer durations. For this to happen you have to have a multifaceted personality. Apart from your educational and professional qualifications you need to develop other aspects that will make you attractive.

Trust worthy
If you want to catch a man’s attention then you need to have flirtatious nature. However, you also have to show that although you flirt with men you do not do so with all and sundry. He needs to know that you will remain faithful and loyal to him. Otherwise his ego takes a beating.

Kind and supportive nature
More than physical attraction what keeps a man hooked to his girl is her emotional maturity. You have to demonstrate to your man that you are dependable and he can count on you for moral and emotional support.

Broadminded attitude
One thing that is a certain put off is being narrow minded and opinionated. Respect others views and do not thrust yours on others. When you are able to do this you automatically become popular and this is one quality that draws a man to you.

Value yourself
Put a premium on your affection and love. When you show that you are not there for the taking a man will respect you more as he knows that you have substance. Don’t come across as cheap and easy. He should know that although you are good human being you certainly know how to make your choices.

Availability
Only when a man is sure of your single status will be attracted to you. Make yourself available and you will get his attention. However, make it a point not to hang out with larger groups as that will deter him from approaching you.

Successful Careers in Radiology Require Continuing Education for Technicians – Some Useful Facts

Successful Careers in Radiology Require Continuing Education for Technicians – Some Useful Facts

Radiology, as many other high-tech fields of the modern health care industry, has become a very promising employment market. The demand for highly qualified professionals in this segment is permanently high. As for the employment outlooks for the future – they are expected to be even better than today. The population growth and the senior citizens segment growth lead to increasing demand for health care specialists, including radiology technicians. Besides, the radiology technicians can find employment everywhere all over the nation, so the necessity of relocation – moving with a family to some other unfamiliar city or state- does not present a great problem for such professionals. Advantages of radiology technician professional specialization determine the popularity of this specialization among other high-tech segments of health care industry. This is a great pro in favor of radiology specialization.

On the other hand, there are no pros without contras, as they say. The present-day professional environment of radiology is highly competitive – too many guys strive to get an attractive and rewarding job in the field – and dynamic. Consequently, a good professional, in order to stay in the team, should take care of constant upgrading and enhancement of the professional qualifications, which is officially required by health care industry regulation. It’s of critical importance to understand the necessity of continuing education for radiology technicians. Otherwise a professional will not be in position to advance his or her career in this field. The official requirement for radiology personnel qualifications are very strict and definite – any radiology technician registered with ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) is required to obtain 24 hours of continuing education credits – if not, the guy is going to lose the hard-earned professional status. What is even worse, minimum half of all these credits must be of Category A. This requirement came into effect fifteen years ago and nowadays the Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism takes care of upgrading the radiology technicians’ professional excellence and skills – they should always be of state-of-the-art quality!

Probably, a lot of people consider continuing education just a waste of time, but with the radiology specializations it is different – any radiologic technician should take the utmost care about staying on top of the game throughout the whole career. The technology and radiology applied sciences are constantly on the move, modern medical technology is advancing speedily, the health care protocols are changing. Any professional in health care industry needs to upgrade his or her skills and knowledge at least once in two years.

What are the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists requirements for the continuing education of radiology specialists?

According to requirements of ARRT any registered radiology technician is required to renew his or her registration. The minimum requirement is 24 continuing education credits during the last two years. You have to be able to prove that you have obtained those credits, otherwise the ARRT will not renew your registration, and it will be suspended. And you will be left without such critically important professional designation as the registration with ARRT! As you see, the continuing education is far from being waste of time for radiology specialists!

Is it difficult to provide 50% of Category A credits, as approved by Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism?

A piece of good news is that the minimum requirement of at least half of continuing education credits for radiology professionals is not as difficult as it sounds. The term “Category A activity credits” means that such credits need to be approved and evaluated by a Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism, as simple as that. The difficulty level of such activities is not higher than the activities you were engaged with during the coursework you did to get your degree and become a certified radiologic technician. So, you do not have to worry about that. The detailed information related to Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism and its requirements is readily available at the official site of ARRT and other online resources.

Keeping up with the continuing education requirements is of critical importance for the successful career development and professional growth of any radiology technicians who cares about further working in the field of health care industry. The Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism is very far from being something of a fancy or a nasty hindrance, designed to make the life of radiology specialists miserable. Nothing of the kind, this procedure, though it might look troublesome for outsiders, helps a radiology specialist stay at the prime level of professional fitness, and that is an excellent thing in itself!

Successful Implementation of Company Wide Coaching Programmes

Successful Implementation of Company Wide Coaching Programmes

Ten years ago I was fortunate enough to be heavily involved in the implementation of a company wide coaching programme, both as an employee who was to receive coaching but also as a manager and coach who was expected to regular coach my reports and my peers to enable them to achieve their objectives. I say, fortunate enough, because I found that when I was coached effectively I became really motivated and focused, and when I finally became a proficient coach, I again found it motivational in that I was able to support and enable my direct reports to achieve more.

There were though many pitfalls along the way to achieving total acceptance of coaching as a skill that not only motivated but also enabled employees to become more capable and productive. In this short article I will outline the necessary steps I feel an organisation must take in order to ensure that they implement a coaching programme effectively. Ten years ago I feel that although we made great progress we also made some mistakes which I would encourage organisations to be aware of when deciding to go down the ‘coaching’ route.

1. Ensure coaching starts at the top and is supported by the ‘top’!

Many organisations are recognising that coaching is a skill that all managers of people and teams must possess. However, many organisations only concentrate on ensuring that 1st and perhaps 2nd line managers are trained in the skill. Suddenly middle or junior managers become skilled in coaching but never experience the power of coaching from their own senior management. In relation to ensuring that everyone who will be involved in the coaching programme ‘buys -in’ to the coaching philosophy they need to hear that the ‘top’ executives are committed to coaching both in terms of promoting the skill but also to be seen to utilise the skill themselves in that they are coached and that they coach their own direct reports. In other words everybody has to ‘walk the talk’.

In my last organisation before going self-employed this was not the case. A few senior members of the Board and a couple of key HR personnel promoted the skill of coaching well and ‘practiced what they preached’. Unfortunately some very senior managers did not and continued to use very directive behaviours towards their staff whilst communicating that coaching was a ‘fad’ that would soon pass! This caused confusion at middle management levels with the result that a number of managers did not take their coaching training very seriously. Fortunately other managers did and their teams eventually experienced the benefit.

2. Will everybody understand what coaching is and what it can do them?

This was one of the first hurdles that we had to overcome. Simply, people did not understand why the organisation was implementing such a programme and also

people did not fully understand what coaching was exactly. Some believed it was training and that all it meant was that you told people what to do and showed them how to do it. After all that was what their sports coach did! Others thought it was more about counselling and you only used coaching when there was a deep problem causing under-performance. All in all not everyone had a good understanding of what coaching was and how it differed from the likes of training, mentoring and counselling. Also many people because they had not been exposed to effective coaching had no experience or idea of why coaching could be a benefit for them; either as the coach or as someone being coached. Before employees can move on and take part in a coaching programme they must be 1005 aware of what the skill of coaching entails and what it can do for them.

3. Those who are going to act as coaches must be trained effectively.

Most companies will take on the services of a training provider or consultant to support them to implement the coaching programme. Beware. Make sure you do your homework! There are numerous coaching schools, training companies and consultancies who now offer ‘coach training’. Some will be excellent; some not so hot. We had some major problems with the group that we used in that not all their trainers/coaches had the necessary skill and experience with the result that not everyone in the organisation received the same quality of training and coaching. I was extremely lucky in that I had an excellent coach who was also a fantastic trainer.

What should you look for when selecting a coaching training company or consultancy?

The most important thing to look for in selecting a provider company is to ensure that you are comfortable that you can form a powerful and productive partnership with them. There are a number of questions you should be asking in order to ascertain this.

o What is their experience of supporting coaching programmes? (Years of experience, types of situations, companies worked with, references)

o What is the experience of the individual consultants? Business backgrounds? Coaching experience? Coaching Qualifications? Any experts within the ranks? (There are a lot of ‘life coaches’ now offering corporate manager-coach training and many do not come from a corporate background. Although this does not mean they won’t be good coaches, it may mean that their credibility in the eyes of the trainees/coachees might not be all it could be, and this could present problems)

o What coaching models does the provider use? Do they stick to one model or are they able to utilise a number of coaching models which they can fit to the purchasing company?

o How flexible is the provider? It is all very well putting together a coaching programme to satisfy an initial proposal but are they able to flex this programme as befits the needs of the organisation as they go through the programme? Flexibility is key in any coaching programme as not everything will go to plan and not everybody will progress at the same pace!

o Does the provider offer variety of interventions within the programme? A good provider will ensure that the programme is varied with it being a mix of classroom theory, role-play and other experiential practices together with assignments, action plans, review days not forgetting 1:1, group and telephone coaching support.

o Are they prepared to ensure that they measure their success and agree with you what exactly success looks like? If they are not then forget them!

o Are they affordable? Some companies and consultancies charge very high rates and deliver excellence and are value for money. Some are the opposite and some charge very reasonable rates and are also excellent. The main point is that you should also do your sums and make sure you can afford the programme because it could last a fairly long time, particularly if you are a large organisation.

Coach training takes time and although there are some very good two -three day courses available the real secret to establishing and reinforcing coaching skills is to ensure that once the basic theory is learned, these skills are immediately put into practice. A good coach training provider will always offer follow up support either in the form of review days, 1:1 coaching, group coaching (action learning sets) and telephone coaching support. Having said all this in many instances it will depend on the budget available but whatever the situation please ensure that you do your homework on the outfits that you have singled out in your tendering process. If your managers and coaches do not get the required and proper training then the whole coaching programme could collapse before your very eyes.

4. Ensure that those who are doing the coaching have some form of measure.

Firstly it was my experience that although everyone went through the coach training not everyone was prepared to go away and start coaching! Reasons for this were varied. Some cited too much pressure of work and not enough time; others simply outlined that they didn’t believe coaching would work for their reports; some stated that they were already coaching, whilst others decided that they needed to coach more because they now believed that this was the way to motivated and up skill their staff. The end result was that although some managers had a strong motivator to coach, others did not. How did we get round this challenge? Well we got half way there, in that in every manager’s measures of performance there was an objective around how much time would have to be spent on a one to one basis with individuals in their teams. This at least got people to make sure they put time in their diaries in order for this to happen. However this was only half the battle as it was no guarantee that within this dedicated time, the manager would actually do any coaching! What I believe should have happened (and what I now believe is happening) is that the manager on a regular basis now asks for feedback on their coaching skills from the people they are coaching. Each coachee will have a list of the competencies and behaviours that an excellent coach should exhibit and every so often the manager will ask the coachee for feedback on these. Only by taking both the objectives and feedback approach will you ensure that coaching is taken seriously.

5. Regularly review progress against agreed measurement and success criteria.

Finally the success of the coaching programme overall should be measured. As with any training intervention it is not always that easy to measure how successful the intervention has been. Sure, the feedback following the course was great and the trainer/coach was superb, but did any lasting change happen and did this result in improved behaviours and subsequent improvement in productivity?

Organisations should look to both qualitative and quantitative measures where possible. Qualitative measures include written feedback about how the coachee or employee feels about the coaching – do they feel more focused, more motivated, has morale improved, do they look forward to their coaching sessions etc. Qualitative measures though do not always satisfy senior management who, in many respects, do not respect ‘happy sheet’ feedback. What they want is hard evidence based on data and results. If they do not get this then suspicion about how effective the interventions often occurs and future investment in such ‘soft skill’ ventures can be difficult to access.

Where possible if you are looking to demonstrate a return on the investment then you should look to measuring outputs such as sales or production; look at sickness rates, employee retention rates together with improvements in individual competency ratings where possible. We were constantly being pressured and challenged to prove a return on the huge investment that the company had made and although we struggled in the early days to prove that coaching worked we eventually gathered together enough quantitative data to prove our case.

In Summary, in order to support your organisation to successfully implement a coaching programme at all levels the do the following:

1. Get ‘Buy-In’ from the top and ensure they are committed to the skill of coaching and that they lead by example. Others will follow.

2. Make sure everyone involved understands why coaching is being implemented, what coaching is and how they as individuals will benefit’ not only as a coach but as someone being coached.

3. Choose your coach training providers very carefully. Are they experienced coaches? Can they train effectively? Do they have a list of satisfied clients? Do they provide ongoing follow-up support?

4. Are there enough motivators in place for managers to coach? Is coaching part of their specific objectives and are they being measured on these objectives? Are they asking for feedback on their skills?

5. Make sure you put both qualitative and quantitative measures in place and that you review these regularly, always remembering to communicate these to senior stakeholders.

Another important point is that all this takes time. If you think you can implement a coaching programme in a matter of weeks then think again. You will need time to get the support of senior management; time to put a training plan together and then time to implement that training plan. Then there should be a re-inforcement and sustainability period when the newly found skills are being implemented and developed through feedback. Time should also be put aside to ensure feedback is collected and measurement against the success criteria is monitored and communicated. Give at least six months to a year for your implementation and then be prepared to continually assess and develop the skills on an ongoing basis.

Coaching programmes are lengthy and can be exhausting given the continual training, monitoring and influencing of stakeholders, but ultimately they are very worthwhile as the organisation and its people grow as a result.
