As the economy stagnates, government’s look at any way they can to save some money.  Sometimes, even essential services like education face steep cuts.  When schools are forced to free up some money, they often look to cut things like music programs.  Their theory is that music is not as integral to a child’s learning as things like math and English.

Is this truly the case though?  Are there legitimate reasons to encourage and foster music programs in our schools.  In fact, there is.  There are a number of reasons to consider music programs essential to a child’s learning process and here are three:

1.  Contrary to popular belief – pulling students out of conventional classes for musical study does not affect test scores.  Paul G Young former president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals provided Principal Magazine with research  showing that creating time in the school day for band or choir has no negative impacts on participants’ test scores.

Six other studies in the last decade – that involve both urban and suburban school districts, differing in size, socioeconomic mix and racial balance have shown similar results.  An ASTA publication presented the findings that showed math and reading test scores were not affected by classroom pullouts for string instruction.

2. Musical training strengthens the mind.  Plato once said that music “is a more potent instrument than any other for education”.  There are an abundance of educators nation wide who would agree with this statement.  There are also studies that show it may very well be true.

A recent study conducted by the University of California found that music can train the brain for higher forms of thinking.  Second graders who received music lessons, scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children without musical training.  That is a high enough number that it should preclude any talk of a flukey study.

This is certainly not the first study of it’s type either.  Shaw and Rauscher indicated in 1997 that the study of music has significant linkages to children’s spatial reasoning and cognitive development.

3. Music will make a child more well rounded.  The benefits of music are not limited to intellectual.  Music can help children in a multitude of ways.  It may not be a full body workout like going for a swim but their are physical benefits linked with music.  Playing an instrument has been shown to improve a child’s hand eye coordination.

It is also a tool that helps develop self discipline.  Like a martial art, learning an instrument (even your voice) takes time, dedication and persistence.  If a child is willing to dedicate the time and practice it takes to become proficient in music, it is a good sign that they will be able to transfer that dedication to other areas in their life.

That seems to be the case in fact.  Studies have found that music participants have more positive attitudes, are more often elected to class office and achieve higher grades and more academic honors than their non-musical peers.

In the face of such overwhelming evidence about the importance of music – it is quite baffling that it seems to be one of the first cuts that schools seem willing (even if it is begrudgingly) to make.

We should make it a goal to foster creativity, discipline and high levels of thinking in our children.  Musical training does just that, and so much more on its own.  In ancient times musical training was revered and held with the utmost respect – maybe it is time we look to the past for clues to our future.

With all of the how-to programs, software and recording devices it seems as if you really don’t need to go to enroll in an animation school to produce things creative. The immediate gratification of creating a segment and uploading it to a distribution network, whether it is a personal site or a community site, is certainly tempting and the focus of many aspiring artists, animators and filmmakers.

When you look at animation and creative works in general you can spot the difference in the styles and quality of the piece generated by a person who has learned everything on their own as opposed to someone who has gone through a training or school system. 

The differences between the two creative paths have to do with the age old argument of commercial versus noncommercial. Animation is no different and if anything even more contentious. If you do want to get into an animation or visual arts school you usually need to have been through some other arts classes or submit a portfolio. Hence there is already the element of being self taught. How else would you know if you really enjoyed the medium without trying it out?

A self-taught animator may express fears of getting corrupted by the system or selling out their creativity after having worked with an arts group and having had some personal creative success. Sometimes this attitude is a response to the stigma that the works are not taken as seriously thus being considered a mere “hobby”. There is validity to being on your own journey of discovery however it may take a much longer time to access and understand the knowledge and equipment.

Generally if an animator is self taught, there is a tendency to be imitative in terms of character design, scene structure and color palette, usually derived from a favorite comic book or animation genre. It is understood you have to start somewhere and although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it can hold you back from developing a personal creative style. The other setback is that the lack of networking may reduce your ability to reach the audience you had hoped. More often than not, truly dedicated animators will outgrow these early stages, overcome these obstacles and create something truly phenomenal and develop a grass roots and festival following.

A school taught animator usually displays more solid character design, character movement, scene composition and structure as well as strong and appropriate color palette choices. A well run animation or visual arts school can provide a time limited framework for the creative process that encompasses scheduling, budgeting time and creative and post-production resources. Usually you have the opportunity to learn and work with professional equipment. Curricular exposure to other disciplines within the animation field allows you to find your creative niche within the production, collaborative and commercial system.

Another important feature of attending an animation or visual arts school is the sense of community and the mentorship of teachers who usually are animators who actually worked on various animation projects from personal to commercial to feature length. It offers the opportunity to get to know peers and be able to exchange ideas and techniques. Going to an animation or visual arts school does not mean giving up your creative soul. What is important is to acquire the tools to actually create the animated vision you have in your head. The time should be used to open yourself up to trying new skills, making career connections and really develop your own creative identity. More skills mean having more tools to break through creative challenges and allowing you the ability to become a valued and sought after member who can contribute to other collaborative projects.

One important tip to remember is that even if you attend an animation or visual arts school, it does not guarantee a position in an animation studio. What could get you in the door could be that demo reel which ironically may have been the piece you used to get into the animation school in the first place. The best thing about going to a school is that it is a great opportunity to create a professional looking demo reel and portfolio to use to get the job or that funding to produce your “next big thing”. Decision makers don’t want to be told about your talent, they need to see your talent.

In summary, being self taught allows you to learn on your own schedule and on your own terms. The negatives are that you could miss out on getting those helpful pointers that give your animation style that extra crispness, visual improvement and you may be isolated from valuable networking opportunities for your craft. The problems with attending an animation or visual arts school include the cost, bowing to scheduling and time constraints and the big ego challenge of having someone criticize your animation which you thought was perfect. It is important to keep the big picture in mind. Whatever the goal, whatever the path; be open to learning and exploring your style. It is crucial to stay in touch with the creative community and most of all to enjoy making and sharing your animated film talents with others.

Cross-cultural training helps you understand the underlying cultural values that drive behaviour–you first understand your own cultural background and then other people’s.

Its outcomes should be first to take the confusion out of cross-cultural encounters. For example, you arrive in Madrid for a business meeting. In your own working environment appointments are made and only changed in exceptional circumstances, and usually with plenty of notice. But when you arrive at your hotel in advance of the next day’s meeting you find a note telling you the appointment has been rescheduled. From your perspective this is tantamount to an insult. You feel angry, frustrated, perhaps puzzled. But that’s because you come from a typically ‘monochronic’ background. Spain is much more ‘polychronic’ and, while you are very time- conscious, punctual, schedule-orientated, many Spanish are easy-going about time, appointments and timetables. It’s not an insult, simply a manifestation of a more relaxed view of these matters.

If you had understood this before doing business in Spain you would not have been thrown by this sudden change in the schedule.

As well as helping you to understand the differences in other people’s behaviour and attitudes, it helps you to overcome perceived barriers. In the situation above, you could arrive at the postponed meeting in a hostile and unreceptive frame of mind. Your business meeting could already be jeopardized by your sense of having been insulted. But if you understand the different behaviour in relation to a different culture’s values, you can simply enjoy the additional free time in Madrid and arrive at the meeting ready to thank your counterparts for the unexpected opportunity to do some sightseeing. No hostility, no barriers.

A further benefit of cross-cultural awareness is that it helps you to become more objective. When cross-cultural issues are unresolved, you risk taking the situation personally, as in the example above. But when you understand that different behaviour patterns are entirely normal in another environment, you can stand back and analyse the situation more effectively. Let’s say you have been negotiating with Chinese counterparts and feel ready to close the deal. At the end of the meeting, the Chinese thank you for your contribution but say they will now go away to consider the agreement. If you don’t understand the collectivist nature of the Chinese decision-making process, you could come away feeling that the negotiation had failed, you may take this as a personal failure. But if you understand the group-orientation of your Chinese counterparts, you will be able judge the negotiation in a clearer light. You will even be able to offer additional input by expressing your willingness to supply further information to the group if they need it.

Team-cohesion is another area that benefits from cross-cultural understanding. Obviously it will be pointless if you as an individual understand these nuances but the rest of your team does not. When you return from a mission such as that described above, they too will think the negotiation has failed unless they understand the issues. As a team you will be able to develop more coherent and effective strategies if you all know what is involved in doing business across cultures.

Cross-cultural training will help you improve your communications skills. You will learn how to listen with real understanding. That means listening with your eyes and your mind as well as with your ears. Let’s say you, a man, invite a female secretary from the office for a coffee after work so that you can get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere. She looks down at the floor, thanks you and says she’ll come. You wait in the café but she doesn’t turn up. If you had been listening properly this should be no surprise. She didn’t look you in the eye and you ought to know that in her culture it is not usual for a woman to meet a man who is not her husband, father or brother alone but, at the same time, she would have found it impossible to openly refuse an invitation from her boss. As you learn to listen and understand you will develop the communication skills you need to deal sensitively but effectively with your international colleagues.

Cross-cultural training helps you understand how to prepare the ground for mutual understanding by helping you win the trust of those you work with. When people can see that you are sensitive to their beliefs and traditions and respect them, they will be more willing to look at new ways of doing things and finding mutually acceptable solutions.

In the United States at least one child in five is overweight and the number continues to grow each day. Over the past two decades, the number of children who are overweight, as well as the number of grossly obese children has more than doubled. And no, children do not out grow it. Overweight children are at a higher risk of becoming unhealthy adolescents and adults. And, it’s overweight adults who are most at risk for a number of problems including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and all forms of cancer. Overweight in children and adolescents is generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of the two, with genetics and lifestyle both playing important determining roles. Children whose family members are overweight are also at an increased risk of becoming overweight, although not all children with an obese family will become overweight. However, it is more likely then not, shared family behaviors such as bad eating habits and lack of activity will have an impact on a child’s body weight.

Our society has become very sedentary with television, computer and video games contributing to children’s inactive lifestyles. Children are spending less time playing outdoors and more time watching TV or sitting in front of their computers, and as a result, they’re getting heavier.  In fact 43% of adolescents watch more than 2 hours of television each day, and only half of U.S. children get as much exercise as they need. As a result, children are displaying signs of heart disease and diabetes before they even reach their teens.

The good news is that almost any kind of physical activity can help prevent the rising tide of obesity. In addition, studies have found that physically active children are far less susceptible to emotional problems, are more likely to stay away from drugs, resist smoking cigarettes, delay sexual activity; develop more self-confidence and higher self-esteem, and even get better grades.

In addition to competitive and recreational sports, weight training has become increasingly popular as an effective method of exercise for preadolescents and adolescents. From Hercules to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the image of the muscular hero has inspired children for generations. And now, perhaps more than ever, physical education experts are encouraging kids to hit the weights.  The benefits of weight training in the preadolescent and adolescent population outweigh any possible risks. Improved muscular strength, endurance and flexibility; prevention of bone loss and osteoporosis; improved self-image, confidence and well-being; improved motor coordination and sports performance; decreased risk of injury; lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels; weight maintenance; neuromuscular therapy and physical rehabilitation; improved aerobic capacity; and the promotion of a lifelong lifestyle of physical activity can all be attributed to weight training.

Weight training also offers particular advantages to children who are overweight and struggle to keep up with their peers in more traditional sports.  By lifting weights, children can improve their strength, endurance and coordination, enhancing their performance in other sports. And, when they lift weights, children can exercise in privacy, away from the critical eyes of their schoolmates.

Despite increasing acceptance of strength training for preadolescents and adolescents, some parents, coaches and instructors are skeptical that weight training offers benefits without causing harm. Myths and misinformation have helped persuade many to disapprove of preadolescent weight training. This is changing, however, as new knowledge replaces old misconceptions. The most common is the concern about musculoskeletal injury and epiphyseal fracture, however, this old “damage the growth plates” myth has never been clinically proven to occur as a result from weight training, but most often from falls due to horseplay or simple accidents.  If we consider that a standard push up involves pressing 60% of your body weight with the muscles of the arms and chest, then a child weighing 80 pounds doing 10 push ups is basically pushing 48 pounds with his arms and chest for 10 repetitions. Why would this be safer than having the same child do a bench press with a 20 pound barbell for 10 repetitions? The answer is…it’s not!!  Damage to the bones and epiphyses, or growth plates, is potentially serious, however, it is more likely for injury to occur due to improper training techniques or lack of supervision. The risk of injury can be minimized with a properly designed training program and close adult supervision.

As with any sport, however, children can injure themselves if movements are not performed properly or with too much intensity. Children should not be treated as miniature adults, particularly in terms of intensity, and training principles for adults do not necessarily correspond to those for children. Children are affected by interacting components such as musculoskeletal growth and sexual maturation.  Therefore, borrowing exercise prescriptions from adult strength-training programs is inappropriate. For example, pushing to failure and performing forced may be dangerous. Exercise prescriptions must be tailored to children’s individual needs, and fitness professionals or certified trainers must closely supervise all children while performing weight training exercises. It is imperative that trainers possess the background knowledge and experience to handle the preadolescent population, as well as have current CPR and first aid certifications.

In 1996, the National Strength and Conditioning Association laid out guidelines to ensure the of children safety who want to lift weights.  Considering these general guidelines, as well as some basic principles of a good beginner weight-training program, the following recommendations should be considered when starting a child on a weight-training program.

Children can begin around the time they would participate in organized sports (about age 7), but each child’s readiness needs to be evaluated on an individual basis with careful attention given to their ability to follow directions.

Children should use machines that are properly designed for their size. Only child certified machines or weight-lifting equipment specifically designed for children should be included in a preadolescent and adolescent weight-training program. Machines designed for adults are not safe for most children because children’s arms and legs are not long enough to use them correctly. Light free weights may be more appropriate for some children, but even doing squats while holding a broomstick may be a good starting point.

Optimal prescription parameters, such as the number of sets and repetitions, have yet to be defined for the preadolescent population. It is recommended that children use the minimum amount of training that produces beneficial improvements in strength and health without undue risk.

Of all of the strength- training parameters, exercise intensity seems to be the key determinant of an effective program. Present guidelines suggest that intensity be moderate (approximately 10 to 15 repetitions) and that preadolescents avoid lifting maximal amounts of weight.

A child should begin a program with one set of little or no weight and concentrate on learning proper form. Once proper technique is demonstrated, a resistance can be selected that allows approximately 10 repetitions to be performed. The number of repetitions is slowly increased until the maximal number (15) can be completed. Resistance is then advanced in small increments of one to three pounds. As the child advances, one to three sets can be performed as tolerated.

The sequence of exercises should progress from larger muscle groups to smaller ones, and the frequency of training can start at two days per week and advance to three, as long as at least one day of rest is permitted between each training session.

Workouts of approximately 30 minutes should be preceded by an appropriate warm-up and finished with a cool-down. Proper training techniques, such as lifting in a controlled manner, must be demonstrated and consistently emphasized throughout the program.

Supervising trainers should encourage children to achieve at their own personal best and discourage children from competing with their peers.

Competitive sports such Styles of Olympic powerlifting and bodybuilding should be highly discouraged in the growing child and adolescent.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson is to be a good role model for your child and teach the next generation how to develop a lifelong habit of physical activity. If your child sees you enjoying healthy foods and physical activity, he or she is more likely to do the same now and for the rest of his or her life. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining the habit of activity throughout the school years and preventing sedentary behaviors in adulthood will benefit not only today’s children, but also future generations to come.

Affirmations get a bad rap by many in the areas of personal growth and development, and at the same time by others are touted as the magic to changing your life. There are those who tell you that using affirmations is THE way to changing your thinking thus changing your life, and others who say they are a useless waste of time.

Here I will attempt to clarify and set straight the place and value of affirmations in your self improvement efforts to change and grow in your life. The topic of affirmations fits into what I call “A fine line.” There is a fine line between going too far one way or the other. To get the value from something you must find the “fine line” place in the middle, too far one way or the other, and you loose it. And so it is with affirmations.

First, some of the misconception comes from people grasping for the quick fix. We all know how we can easily read into something what we want. And that what most people are looking for is the quickest, easiest way to make changes in their life, which does really not exist.

All related factors must be addressed to realize real results. Affirmations do play a role in your overall self development and growth but are certainly not the only tool that must be used to get the results you want. Affirmations alone will not bring about the major change in life some believe, on the other hand they are not totally worthless as many others make them out to be.

Much of what is taught in the personal growth and development field is just part of the story. Where someone has focused on one or even a few aspects of what is involved and highlighting just those parts, which gives the impression that, that is all there is. Yes, in short change it is simple, but there are many ‘between the lines’ aspects that come into play, and one of these is affirmations.

It’s easy to allow ourselves to get consumed with one aspect of life development when our focus is on just one element, which is the case with many books and trainings. It is good to study and focus on one aspect if this is something specifically you feel you need to learn and user, but don’t forget about the whole picture.

Now those who say that just using affirmations will fix your life, seem to ‘forget’ about the aspects of action, among other things, which we can’t escape as we are in this physical reality. Yes, your thoughts and your feelings play a crucial role in how you manage and develop your life, but that’s not all. You must take appropriate actions, it’s your job, your design here in this physical reality we enjoy. If we weren’t suppose to be involved physically why are we here?

And, those who say affirmations are worthless are missing out on a powerful tool that has some purpose when one is working on their thinking. And, yes, your thinking is absolutely critical as everything revolves around it. I think why some people look down on the use of affirmations comes from their reaction to others who say that affirmations are all you need. But this all or nothing reaction does not serve anyone well.

Here are some ways that affirmations are useful in your self improvement work:

* Affirmations help set your tone. Your overall attitude and feeling will affect what you think about. It affects how you act and interact with others. It virtually colors your day. Using affirmations will help direct your daily tone.

* Affirmations help keep your thinking positive – on what you want and away from what you don’t want. If affirmations serve no other purpose for you than this, it makes them well worth using, if all you do is use affirmations to replace unwanted thinking with desirable thinking you have won big. A critical part of change is to learn to stop focusing on what you don’t want and rather focus on what you do want.

* Affirmations help build mental discipline. As you learn affirmations and actually use them regularly, you are training your mind to a different way of thinking on a daily basis. You are learning how you can change your thought and how to keep it as you want. You are learning to take command of your thinking by directing it rather than allowing everything to be automatic.

* Affirmations help evolve your thinking in the direction you want. As you develop affirmations for yourself, you are thinking about and expanding your thinking in the areas that you want to play a greater role in your life. The more you work with developing affirmative and supportive statements, the more you will discover what is possible.

Now, maybe if your thinking is already 100% supportive of what you want in life, where you are going, and you never slip into any thought of doubt, worry and what you don’t like, you don’t need affirmations. Actually if this is the case, you have already assimilated the affirmation like thought into your everyday thinking. Your conscious mind is already always on the positive, supportive congruent thoughts of your ideal life as it is freely unfolding. For anyone else, affirmations can be a useful tool.

Affirmations are a wonderful tool for effecting your thinking, which is very important in your growth and development, as long as you don’t get stuck thinking that this is all you need to do. It takes more than just your thoughts to see results, but developing your thinking is key to your knowing the right actions to take, when and how to get the results you want.
