When I started my first year in university, it was a bit of a culture shock in many ways. One of the most extreme differences on campus compared to high school was that the professors didn’t really seem to care whether I showed up for classes or not. In some classes, many students were even falling asleep. I even nodded off during some lectures, especially if the courses were conducted in nice theatres with really comfortable seats.

I enjoyed this freedom of showing up for classes whenever I wanted. This was certainly a big difference from high school where the teachers constantly took class attendance. But the rude awakening soon came when I got my first set of grades. My marks sank to ‘C’ averages with even the odd course at risk of failing.

My study skills were poor and last minute cramming for tests or exams made university life stressful. I was not enjoying campus life as I should be doing. Some things had to change as I faced the possibility of dropping out of university without a degree.

Fortunately, I stumbled onto a study strategy that saved my hide. This tactic if used faithfully, virtually eliminates the need to cram for exams. I started using this strategy at the beginning of my third year if I recall correctly and it made all the difference in the world for me.

This study strategy is ideal especially for university or college courses that involve final exams that cover material from the entire courses. Here is what this strategy involves.

- For each of your courses, schedule a regular study session for it EACH WEEK
- Stick to this study session schedule faithfully whether you have decided to have sessions during weekdays, weekends or a combination – just stick to it!
- During each study session, review EVERYTHING that you have covered in your course so far from DAY ONE to PRESENT.
- Continue reviewing all content EACH week EVEN if you don’t have an upcoming test or exam.

It’s true that there will be more material to cover each week for each course as you move along the school year. However, as you get more familiar with the earlier material each week, covering them will be faster. You might not have to increase that much time to each study session as the year goes by.

The beauty of this study strategy is that by the time final exams roll around, you will be quite familiar with most of the course content already because you have been reviewing them each week. This eliminates the need to cram for final exams.

Using this study strategy will allow you to go into your final exams with much more confidence than ever before. The only new material is the most recent since older content will be well absorbed into your head from all those weeks of regular study.

This study strategy worked wonders for me as it took me from a ‘C’ average student to ‘B+/A-’ average by graduation. This not only allowed me to finish my degree successfully, it got me into MBA school where I really needed to have better study skills in place.

So there it is – my top study strategy that basically involves weekly review of everything that you’ve covered in your courses to date. If it worked for me, it will work for you. So no more cramming!

If you’re wondering what kind of studies to pursue in an uncertain world full of rapid change there are at least three advantages technical colleges have over universities.

They’re cheaper and easier to get into than universities

Technical colleges are cheaper than universities. Tuition at a technical college can vary from $3,000-$5,000 for each school year, depending on the type of program. Tuition at universities, however, could range from about $7,000 a year for a state university in the U.S. (or a Canadian university), to $30,000 a year for an ivy-league university.

The tuition bill at a university will also be larger than a vocational college because the programs are longer. Undergraduate degree programs at universities generally last four years. Many vocational college programs typically last 1 to 3 years.

Technical colleges are also easier to get into than universities. A good U.S. university requires high grades and high SAT scores. Graphic arts students at the college I work at have to bring a portfolio when applying for a space, while advertising students have to write an entrance exam assessing their communication aptitude.

Practical job-related training

Technical colleges offer practical, hands-on training. At the college I teach at (I teach communications to different departments), I see students who are learning to program computers, create dentures, clean teeth, design jewelery, make pastries, design websites or even new gadgets. Many of them get jobs shortly after graduating.Some even continue on to a university a few years later since some college courses can bridge into university degree programs.

Smaller Classes

At technical college, classes are smaller than those at a university. Students might attend labs in their various fields (there are always limited spaces) and work learning hands-on skills, as an instructor, usually an expert in the field, gives timely and individualized feedback. In a university, students could find themselves in a large lecture theatre full of hundreds of students with the professor as a tiny spec at the front of the class delivering information. Having attended such a class at a large Canadian university, I can tell you it is very alienating and not terribly conducive to learning.

So, consider your options carefully as you make important decisions about your post secondary education. You might be pleasantly surprised by what a technical college has to offer.

Give yourself the best opportunity to benefit from your study time. That usually means finding somewhere that’s relatively quiet and where your friends can’t find you for a while. Better yet, you find them and make them help you study.

Why: This could be the most important, yet most overlooked tip of all. It’s easy to get distracted by the party down the hall or the big game coming up this weekend. But when you remember why you’re here, why you’re in school, and why this is important to your future, you help yourself stay focused. A large part of traditional CMS complexity is due to fact that these systems are designed for large transaction processing. With a hosted solution, the institution can have the option of using only the CMS components it actually needs.

Hosted CMS can also be up and running much quicker, with lower training requirements. The vendor has dedicated staff deployed to handle technical issues, and the institution does not have to take on the burden of finding or employing support personnel.

Although the university claims to be founded in 1853, the campus that exists today in Gainesville was actually founded in 1905. The Buckman Act created the current University of Florida by removing funding for existing educational institutions, including the University of Florida at Lake City, the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School at St. Petersburg and the South Florida Military College at Bartow. The first classes began on September 26, 1906, on the new campus that was built in Gainesville. The alligator was chosen as the universities mascot in 1911. The Buckman Act also established the University of Florida as the only public school in Florida for white males. Enrollment for females began in 1947 and the enrollment for African-American students began in 1958.

University of Florida is divided into 16 colleges, which offer 100 undergraduate majors and 200 graduate degrees, including the only dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine programs offered publicly in the state. The acceptance rate at the school has gone downward as a result of the applicants becoming more competitive. In 2005, the average incoming freshman had a grade-point average of 3.9, a score of 1340 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and an American College Test score of 29. Undergraduate tuition for Florida residents is around $120 per credit-hour, while it is $520 per credit-hour for out-of-state students, with a typical accumulation of 30 credits per year. The Freshman Class of 2005 ranked number one in the nation in terms of National Merit enrollment, enrolling more National Merit Scholars than any other university. A full tuition academic scholarship is awarded to all National Merit Scholars admitted to university. The University of Florida is also home to an Honors College that offers many honors courses to students who obtained high scores on their “SAT” and “ACT” tests. The Honors program lasts for a student’s first two years, but Honors program services and courses remain available to upperclassmen. The university also was 13th among all universities public and private in the number of U.S. Patents awarded in 2000.

Florida dedicates about $44 million per year to its sports teams and facilities. This could be due to having swept, For the sixth time, the overall men’s and women’s Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy in 2002 as well as ranking among the nation’s top 10 athletic departments for 19 straight years. The football team won a national championship in 1996 and the men’s basketball team won their first national championship this year.
