Which Is Better For Your Home – A Single Player Or Multi-Player Pinball Game

Which Is Better For Your Home – A Single Player Or Multi-Player Pinball Game

Buying a pinball game for your home game room is no little task. Yes you want a fun pinball machine and yes you want one both family and friends will enjoy. So does that mean you go right out and buy the first “cool” looking pinball machine you see? Nope, No Way, Never!

Although a “FUN” pinball game is what every home game room or rec room needs, you must consider a couple of things. One consideration is whether you’d like a single player or multi-player game? Of course most of the games now days are multi player so if you’re looking for a modern pinball game that is single player they’re hard to find unless it’s a children sized pinball game. The antique / vintage pinball machines made in the early 1950s and before are the single player pinball machines.

So not only do you have a choice between single player and multi-player but now you must choose between a vintage pinball machine and a more modern pinball machine. And of course each one has its good points and features so let’s go into a little more detail.

Single Player Pinball Machine

Considering most of the single player pinball games date back some 50 years or so a good point in having one of these is its uniqueness. They’re rare, they have a lot of neat “vintage” bells and whistles for those times and they’re actually very challenging yet simple to play for kids of all ages from 3 to 103.

Because of their uniqueness they also tend to be a big conversation piece and everyone wants to take a turn to play. It’s not often you get a chance to play an original pinball game from the 1930s, 40s, 50s or 60s. Growing up, in my parents game room they had two antique pinball games from the late 1930s/early 1940s era. One was called “Miss Annabel” and the other was called “Catalina”. They didn’t have electronic graphics or digital score keeping, they were one-player games and they were quite old. But those two antique pinball games were more fun than a lot of the newer electronic pinball games with all the graphics, sounds, bonus games and all the other high tech stuff they have on them now days. You see it wasn’t how “new” or how “advanced” the game was that made it fun, it was the skill involved and the uniqueness of the game that made it fun!

Both family and friends enjoyed those games for many years during all the holiday parties. We had tournaments, kept high scores and more. So you see single player games do have some advantages over the newer multi player pinball games. Also it seems that with the vintage pinball machines it was you against the machine, not other people. But with multi-player games you seem to concentrate more on beating your competition than beating the game.

Multi Player Pinball Game

Modern era pinball games have a lot to say for themselves. You’d think I’d favor the antique single player games because I grew up with them but that’s not true. As time went on my parents replaced one of the antique games with a 4-player electronic pinball game. I was a little upset at first but grew to like the 4-player game.

First of all it had all the bells and whistles that most of the pinball games have now days. Like bonus games, extra balls, two-ball play and more. Those were features I only encountered in arcade game rooms. But suddenly we had one in our own home. And you know what, I loved all those features. Plus since it was a 4-player game more people could play during the family get-togethers and holiday parties. Also it kept the high score so no need to have a piece of paper and pen nearby. And the winner could put in their initials by using the flipper buttons.

So what are some of the basic features you get with a modern pinball machine? You get the multi-player feature, high score memory, name memory, computer graphic screens, multi-ball play, ball capture, bonus games, talking games, stereo music and some even have two levels of pinball action. There are more features besides these too. Mainly because there are so many different modern machines available you’ll come across a lot of features we haven’t mentioned. If you come across an arcade game room go in and check out the cool features on some of the newest pinball games available, you’ll be amazed.

One other really neat thing about modern pinball games is that you can find “Theme Pinball Games”. From the Simpson’s and Adams Family to Star Trek and NASCAR there and many different and fun themed pinball games that would fit right into a home game room theme. You may just find one for your home that you never knew existed.

So after playing pinball games for 30 years both modern and antique I’ve come to a conclusion. No matter which you choose they’re a great addition or I should say a “MUST” addition to any ultimate home game room! The best scenario would be to have one of each if possible. I love the uniqueness of the vintage pinball machines and I love all the high tech features of modern pinball machines too. Of course everyone has their own reasoning behind which is better and some games just work better for some people than others. But before going with one over the other make sure to give them both a try. You never know which one you’ll love more and you may be surprised which one you decide to add to your home game room.

To Invest or Not to Invest, Which is Riskier?

To Invest or Not to Invest, Which is Riskier?

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” -Helen Keller

Most financial planners believe that it is far riskier for you not to invest then to invest. This is partially true because the future of the job market, and national social security are uncertain. If you are planning on retiring then investing is the only way you will be able to have enough money to do so.

However, for a person who knows very little about the business of investing it can be overwhelming. An uninformed person can invest in the stock market and lose everything. The risk occurs not because the nature of investing is risky but because the investor was not educated about the stock market or how to invest. The solution to being uninformed is not to stay way from investing but to educated yourself about investing and financial planning.

Start your investing education with the basics. Be able to define what a stock, bond, or mutual fund is. Understand their differences and what are the variables which influence them. Pick up a couple of how of books about investing from the local library or access online websites.

These can be a great place to learn about the basics. Educating yourself about the basic concepts of investing is the first step. After being informed start investing a small amount of money into secure stocks with little risk. This is a great way to gain experience and not risk losing big money on big mistakes.

Before you start investing you should find out what type of investor you are. Be sure to ask yourself the following questions:

What is your estimate time for investing? Can you afford to invest your money for a long period of time or will you need your money in a year?

What types of businesses are you interested in investing in? Are you looking to invest in solid and corporations or are you looking for someone innovative and new?

How much money can you afford to place into your investments?

What are the goals of your investments? Are you looking to retire and live off investments?

Uninformed investing is far riskier then not investing at all. However, the benefits of being an educated and successful investor far out weigh the risk of letting your money go to waste in a savings account which offers you no return on your money.

You must take charge of your financial future. Do not fear investing. Make an effort to learn about the basics and understand central investing concepts. Only through this education will you know if investing is right for you.

The Best Car Deals – Low Finance Rates Vs Rebates – Which Should You Choose?

The Best Car Deals – Low Finance Rates Vs Rebates – Which Should You Choose?

How To Get The Best Car Deals:

Quick tips that will help you at the car dealer:

How to understand Rebates and low financing offers:

Vehicle MSRP: Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price – This price is always negotiable – don’t ever agree to pay MSRP

Exception: Some vehicles that might be “hard to find” or “limited in production” might be sold by the dealers at MSRP or, sometimes higher. This is usually called Market Adjustment.

Manufacturers Rebates: This is your money and has nothing to do with discounts given by the dealership. This money is given to you directly from the factory. Never let the rebate be used as a negotiation tool by the dealer. Any discount or negotiation from the dealer should be separate of any rebates offered.

Low finance rates: 0.00% 1.00% 1.9% etc… These are called Sub-vented rates, they too are offered by the factory and not the dealership. Do not allow a “low” finance rate to be used as part of a negotiation by the dealer. These rates are granted over and above any discounts, rebates, etc.

Exceptions: There are several exceptions to Sub-vented finance rates, but here are two that you really should be aware of:

1. Not all people qualify for these rates. So, if you suspect that you might have some issue that will cause you not to qualify, there is nothing wrong with expressing to the dealer that the low finance rate is something you are interested in, and you would like to apply first, before going through the long, timely steps of deal negotiation. Many dealerships will view this as unusual; however, any “good” dealer will be happy to let you submit an application first if you insist. Why is this important? As we always say, knowledge and preparation are the keys to not overpaying at a dealership. What happens if your entire deal is worked, negotiated and finalized with the dealer? Then you head over to the finance office to finalize the finance terms and payments… You expected to pay 0.00% interest, then at the last second you are told: “Sorry” because you don’t qualify… NOT GOOD THE WHOLE DEAL CHANGES.

2. Rebates and “low” finance rates can not always be combined. Some factories allow it some times, however there is no rule; you must do your homework first. For instance, Chrysler offers manufacturers rebates on most their vehicles, plus they offer low finance rates on most vehicles as well. Though, you the customer must decide which offer you want, you can’t have both. Although, sometimes Chrysler will run special offers that allow you to “combine” both the financing and rebate offers at once. But be careful, dealers won’t always tell you that these offers are available, if you are unaware and you agree to pay higher finance rates, you are stuck.

Commonly Asked Question: Which is the right choice, Rebate or Low Financing?

This is an interesting question asked by many customers, the answer is simple yet many people have no idea.

Remember this rule: You should do what’s best for you, do not ever inquire with a person, dealer, or anyone else that has any other motive than what’s best for you.

What that means is this: When you ask a dealership which makes more sense, the dealer will likely tell you: “Take the rebate – not the low interest rate.”

The reasoning behind this answer is, if you take the rebate you are actually paying “less” for the vehicle than if you elected the low interest rate. So, being that the vehicle price is the most important issue, you should always take the rebate. Is this correct or incorrect?

Rule: Don’t be concerned what the dealer is making or loosing, it’s not relevant to what’s best for you.

Does the dealership stand to gain more if you chose the rebate vs. the low finance rate? The answer to that question is yes, the dealership does stand to gain more. They receive a little more in “reserve money” from the lender if you chose conventional finance rates. The fact is however; that this point is completely irrelevant. Who cares what the dealership is making? Why is that important anyway? Is there some rule that says a dealership is not entitled to make profit? The only person who is doing something wrong in this scenario is you. You’re asking the wrong party for information. If the complete and honest answer might cause the dealer to make less, chances are more than likely the answers will be carefully weighed to fall on their side.

Remember: Your concern is getting the best deal for you, don’t waist time caring about what the dealership makes. Prepare yourself by considering all the facts. Do not make the common errors of all the people we constantly heart about who over pay all the time.

Fact: People who think that dealerships are loosing money on them are usually the ones who pay the most!

Note: Please understand the purpose of this and every other post we write is NOT to condemn dealerships for making profit. Why should a dealer not be entitled to profit? What right do we have to ask them to lose money? Would you ever go to a restaurant and tell them that you insist they sell you dinner and lose money? It’s a stretch, but equally as ridiculous.

The purpose of this post is to assist fair people in getting the best deal for themselves. Protecting people from being “ripped off” by a deceptive dealership is our motivation. We don’t claim that all dealers are unfair or “rip off artists”, in fact we are aware that most dealers are honest and forthcoming. Although, everyone is in business to make a profit and the topics written about within these posts are for the purpose of assisting “fair” consumers achieve “fair” and honest deals. Why do we keep mentioning “fair”. Because equal to us having no concern about a cheating dealership, we also have no concern about the “unfair” consumers who want the good dealers to close down their business and lose money.

“A GOOD DEAL IS WHEN BOTH PARTIES ARE SATISFIED”

As we have mentioned so many times; price is not always the most important issue.

The following is the one and only correct answer to the Rebate vs. low rate debate:

With any issue that causes you to make a decision there are always certain facts in place, those facts make up the “pros and cons”. With any decision we make, we weight the pros and cons and ultimately are lead to a decision. Then of course, we hope that decision was the right one.

Remember this rule: There is always a point where the two lines will cross, that point is where you will find the correct answer.

This means; there are variables that create change in every deal. For example: It may be a better deal for me to take the rebate, while it is a better deal for you to take the low financing rates. Let’s explain:

You might be financing $30,000 and your finance term is 60 months. The Factory is offering a $3000 manufacturers rebate or 0.00% for the 60 month finance term. Which do you choose?

I might be financing $12,000 – The factory is offering a $3000 rebate or 0.00% for the finance term. Which one do I choose?

Obviously the answers vary; your lines of “break even” will obviously cross way sooner than my lines. The reason: different factors in the two deals will yield different answers.

Here’s how you figure out the correct answer based on your factors:

For this example we’ll assume that you are considering a $30,000 car with $3,000 rebate or a 0% interest rate, and for the sake of finding an answer, we’ll assume that you’re putting $3,000 a down payment and you qualify for all offers.

First: Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper; on one side write Rebate on the other side write 0%

Second: on the 0% side write in the sale price of $30,000 – and on the left side (rebate) write in the sale price of $30,000 as well.

Third: On both sides add in your local tax rate. For instance: if you live in Queens NY add 8.25% as sales tax.

Fourth: on both sides add $300 – this should cover DMV – Inspection and dealer Doc Fees.

Fifth: On both sides – subtract $3,000 for you down payment

Sixth: On the rebate side subtract $3,000 for the rebate

If you did this right, so far you should have the following results:

Both sides: should show Sale Price $30,000 Tax $2,475. DMV $300. Sub Total: $32,775

Rebate Side Should show $6,000.00 Total down payment and an “unpaid balance” of $26,775.00

The 0% side should show $3,000 Total Down Payment and an “unpaid balance of $29,775.00

Assumption: If you chose not to take the 0% – the dealer offered you a 5.5% interest rate.

Compare to see where the lines cross:

Next step – find an auto loan calculator – you can go on any search engine type in “free auto loan calculator”

I am not able to attach a link to this area of the post so I will simply suggest a very user friendly, free calculator (which we have no affiliation) is chase.com just search:

“Free chase auto loan calculator”

Calculate:

REBATE SIDE

$26,775 Amount Financed

5.5% APR

60 Month Term

Answer: Payment $511.43

Total Interest: $3,910.80

Total of Payments $30,685.00

0% SIDE

$29,775.00 Amount Financed

0% APR

Answer: Payment $496.25

Total of Payments $29,775.00

Summery: On your deal, 0% came out to be $910.80 less than the REBATE, so obviously the better deal for you is 0%.

On my worksheet, using the same method, it turned out that the rebate was quite a bit more of savings, (only because I was financing much less) if I chose to finance more money perhaps the lines would cross sooner.

Final notes to remember:

1) If you choose to lower or raise you down payment and lower and raise your amount financed, the out come of “which one” is a better deal will vary. So, keep testing the different scenarios using the method provided above and you will find the best deal for you. Every time!

2) Be careful – No rebate is final, while low financing isn’t: Keep in mind this very important consideration: If you choose low financing over the rebate – essentially you just paid more for the vehicle and you can’t get that money back. However, you chose to do so in return for free financing terms. (Very smart) You did your homework, you made your decision based on solid factors and you made the overall least expensive decision. EXCELLENT WORK! Though, you must remember you made this comparison based on a 5 year repayment term. If you keep the vehicle for 5 years, and pay as expected you win, your calculations were perfect and you achieved the best deal for you. On the other hand, if something changes and for any reason you decide that you are not going to keep this vehicle beyond the second or third year… Then, you just gave back the benefit of the low financing. The variables have changed once again and the better deal swings back to the rebate. So remember, in the privacy non pressured environment of your own home; carefully consider all your options and likelihoods. For instance, if you know you don’t keep a vehicle beyond a couple of years, this must be included as a decision factors.

Long story short: Always compile all the facts first, limit the variables that can change the deal and negotiate with confidence.

Which Are The Best Dental Plans Available? Read Here And Decide For Yourself

Which Are The Best Dental Plans Available? Read Here And Decide For Yourself

The lack of affordable dental coverage in the United States has become a big issue for most families. As a matter of fact, seven out of ten people in this country have no type of dental plan at all. There are several states that are now paying the treatment costs for those low income individuals and families, but it’s a hardship for many of these people to even afford regular health insurance. Dental coverage would be considered a luxery for most, unless they’re fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of a group plan offered by their employer.

There are generally two different types of dental plans being sold right now that are the most popular. The are dental insurance and dental discount plans. Let’s briefly look at the Pro’s and Con’s of each type of plan so that you may make an educated decision before you decide to buy.

Dental insurance is traditional insurance coverage just like health, auto, ect. You’ll have a monthly premium to pay and you’ll also have deductibles that you must pay for a portion of your care. This is normally around twenty percent of the cost of the visit. Example, if your cost at the dentist was $100.00 then your out of pocket deductible cost would be $20.00.

Many dental insurance plans will pay for routine dental care right away. Routine dental care is things like cleanings, flouride treatments for children under sixteen years old, ect. This of course depends on the policy, but is pretty standard. You’ll have a waiting period for many major procedures of anywhere from six to twenty four months. These are procedures such as tooth restorations (fillings), bridge work, root canals, ect. Cosmetic dentistry is rarely covered by dental insurance.

The Pro’s of a dental insurance plan are that, eventually the majority of your dental care costs will be paid for. The Con’s are that by the time you are eligible to receive this coverage you may have already paid that amount in premium payments. The costs for dental insurance range from as low as $10.00 per month all the way up to $100.00 monthly for a family plan. Of course, the higher your monthly premiums are the better coverage you’ll receive. You definitely get what you pay for.

Dental discount plans are exactly what they say they are, a discount at the time of your visit to the dentist. Most of these plans offer saving of anywhere from ten to sixty percent on standard dental procedures and around twenty five percent for major dental, such as oral surgery.

The Pro’s of dental discount plans is that they’re very affordable for just about anyone. You can purchase an individual dental plan for as low as $79.95 per year from some companies. Another advantage is that there are no waiting periods, like there are with dental insurance. If you need a procedure done then you can have it done that day. There are no age limits or exclusions. Cosmetic dentistry is included with some of these plans. You receive a discounted fee schedule with your membership that gives you a cost of procedures before and after your discount and a list of participating dentists within the plans network that you may visit.

Some of the Con’s of dental discount plans is that you must pay for the services performed at the time of the visit. Some of the discounts are substantial, but you still must be prepared to settle up at the time of the appointment, as there are no payment plans with discount plans. This can also be a burden on some people, unless they prepare for it. Another Con is that you are restricted to seeing a dentist with the network of the plan. The good news though is that you may change dentists at any time until you find one that you are comfortable with. Who knows, your dentist may already be a member?

This is only meant to give a general idea of the different types of dental plans available to consumers. Only use this comparison as a guideline and do your own research before you make a final decision about what’s best for you and your family.

“One comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself sufficiently often, whether the statement be true or false. It comes to be dominating thought in one’s mind.”

– Robert Collier

Repetition of words creates repetition of thoughts.

Repetition of thoughts creates reality.

By intentionally choosing the words that wallpaper your mind, you change the tone of the room in which you live and you change the life you are living.

******* The Power of Words *******

We typically dilute our words by drawing them from vague and conflicted states of mind. We present a muddy impression on the creative medium in which we live and our reality mirrors our dull efforts. This is so easy to remedy that you may actually shock yourself with your radical improvement in results as you become more intentional with your affirmations.

Words are not just signposts that point to meaning. When we use them to simply report what we observe it’s like using a racecar to deliver newspapers.

Words are powerful instruments of manifestation. When given an open road they will perform extraordinary feats.

******* Eliminate These Words *******

We use certain words habitually and somewhat unconsciously. By eliminating them from your affirmations, you will automatically begin implementing 2 of the 3 ways to supercharge your affirmations, without even yet knowing what these 3 ways are.

Here are the words to eliminate:

no, not, don’t, doesn’t, never, won’t, can’t, stop, quit, will, am going to, should, want to, plan to, hope to.

Every time you create an affirmation, check for these words. If you find them, reword your affirmation without them.

******* 3 Superchargers for Your Affirmations *******

Supercharger #1

==>Always Affirm in the Present Tense

When you are creating an affirmation, you are like an artist creating a painting. Whatever you affirm with your paintbrush becomes the reality on the canvas. As an affirmation artist, you do not have colors on your palette. Your words are your paint. You are pulling potential realities from the formless realm into the manifest realm through the narrow birth canal of your carefully chosen words.

Choose your words in the present tense so that the reality you choose becomes experienced now. Now is the only time that has the mystical power to pour forth a manifestation. If you word your affirmations in the future by saying, “I will…,” you keep that carrot dangling in the fictitious future and you pull the plug on the power of your affirmations. A surefire way to begin an affirmation is with the sacred words, “I am…”

Supercharger #2

==> Always Affirm in the Positive

You are bothering to create an affirmation because you are living something unwanted and you desire a change. It is only natural that you would understand your desire as not wanting what you’ve got. But if you point your affirmation toward getting rid of a habit or condition, if you say what you will not do, or if you affirm that something will go away, you are actually chaining yourself to it.

It simply does not work.

In fact you’d be better off not to affirm at all because this sort of negative affirmation is like affirming the opposite of what you want. Remember, to affirm means to make firm. It is the process of bringing things into form. Remember also that the universe does not hear the word “no.” So whatever you are talking about, whether you are affirming or denying it, you are in effect, affirming it.

Instead of saying, “I will quit smoking,” which is both in the future and negative, say something like:

All my actions are healthy and intentional. I choose my actions and I enjoy all my choices. I am in charge of my actions. I have healthy life affirming habits. I love being in charge of my life.

Supercharger #3

==> Feel as if it’s Already True

Once you have a well-chosen phrase to affirm, one that is positive, in the present tense, and feels good when you consider it, enter into its world. Step into the affirmation as if it were already your reality. When you say it, imagine that it is already true. Feel how you would feel if it were already manifest. Steps 1 and 2 build a powerful rocket. Step 3 lights the fuse and sends it off with a blast.

Affirmations can literally change your life. They are free. Everyone has equal access to them, and they work day and night, always ready and willing to bring your good to you. Use these 3 superchargers every time you do an affirmation process and watch your life transform before our eyes.

Ways In Which You Can Apply For Adoptive and Foster Care

Ways In Which You Can Apply For Adoptive and Foster Care

When you apply for foster care it can sometimes be a long process for you and your partner and it can also be an emotional challenge as well. When someone decides to do this they start off feeling very happy that they will able to give that child a life that they may not have had otherwise. Or, they have an interest in wanting to adopt a child, and see fostering a child as a way to do it, without all the extra cost needed. For children who may end up in this process are in a real need for a home, as to a baby, who will most likely have people in waiting to adopt this child through an agency.

What You Have To Do

What you need to do first is call your local Protective and Department of Family services. They will give the dates of the next orientation class to attend. Once you attend this class, they will go through what you need in order to become foster parents. There is a lot more to it than you will probably realize. The family income needs to be at a high rate, so that you can support a family – when you decide to foster you need to known that it is not an income earning scheme. Your home needs to be big enough to support the family, and that you have a certain number of children that is required by the state. In the state of Texas, you must have under six children that are not older than 18 in your residence, or alternatively if there is children under 5 you can have more than 5, and that also includes the children that are yours.

The Following steps

Once this class is completed and you can see that you meet their requirements, there is 20 hours of training required. You will be told that when you are fostering, the problems you will face, and they will give you suggestion in how to handle it. They will give you ideas in knowing how to move through the system. They will give you talks, and visual guides on what can happen once you foster and adopt a child. When you pass these class, you will get a certificate, take it to the local office, and from there you will need to take further classes in water safety and CPR. Once this is complete contact your Department of Family agency, and they will come meet with you in your home.

When you need to get your home reading it can be a scary experience and quite a nerve racking one, especially because you want to get it right and you want to impress, but it may not be as bad you may expect. They will provide you with a list of everything that you need, and make sure you have done it all, and you shouldn’t have any problems. The house needs to be in order, and you will go through what age you would like to foster, and what problems or disabilities you could accept.

After the home visit and the home study is completed, you will then have to wait for what they have to say, which can be an agonizing time. However, when the department receives the study, it will be either approved or denied, and they will tell you when you can take in your child. This could be a quick process or it could take a long time. Sometimes in these situation there maybe families that they may favor over you, and you could be waiting for a while.

Affirmation statements -we hear them spoken often by motivational speakers, authors, writers etc., but what can we personally do to harness the power of affirmations in our own lives?

Think about a time in your life when you desired to make a change – something major, like finding a new job, moving to a new city or home, or something less momentous like a New Year’s resolution to improve your overall health. Can you think of a past experience like that? Now, think about the tools that you used or steps that you took to help guide you through that transition and keep you focused on achieving your goals while making that change.

These tools in effect, involved you setting in motion a series of events to accomplish the goals you’d set out for yourself, and one of the easiest ways to achieve success is to create affirmations.

Affirmations are very easy to use and quite powerful once you get the hang of practicing this daily exercise. Affirmations keep you focused on what’s important to you and help you achieve positive transitions. Basically an affirmation is a declaration that something is already true and has come to fruition in your life in the present moment. You have to believe what you are looking to achieve or obtain has already arrived in order for ‘it’ to show up in your life.

If your desire is to create personal well-being, first choose a phrase that describes what you desire. For example, if you desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then your affirmation statement could say, “I feel good and look good when I live a healthy lifestyle.” Or “I enjoy the great feelings I get from exercising daily.” Short powerful statements are more focused and work much better to bring about results than long, drawn-out paragraphs.

There are some rules to follow when creating an affirmation that I’d like to share with you.

Rule # 1: The phrase must be in the present tense, such as “I feel good”, as opposed to “I will feel good” which implies that at some point in the future you ‘might’ achieve your goal. Remember to phrase your affirmation as if your desire.

Rule #2: The statement must always be written from a positive perspective, instead of a negative one. For example, you wouldn’t say “I don’t feel good when I am not healthy” as this places your health – which you are trying to change – in a negative context. Always phrase your desire/affirmation statement in a positive context and in the present tense.

Rule #3: Repeat often. After you create an affirmation, write it down on something that you can keep with you, like a notebook or card to put in your purse or wallet, or place it somewhere that you look at often throughout your day such as on your bathroom mirror or your desk at work. Make sure that you read your affirmation statements as many times during your day as possible.

Studies have shown that using the power of affirmations can lower stress and I have found this to be true in my own life. When I get clear about what I want in my life and focus on my desires with affirmations every day, I am more content and peaceful. What we focus on grows, so the more you focus your attention on your affirmations, the more likely you are to create positive changes in your life and achieve your dreams.

My favorite book on affirmations and the power of healing is Louise Hay’s, You Can Heal Your Life. In this fascinating book you can learn more about the healing power of affirmations and how you can harness them to improve your overall health and well-being. And frankly, who wouldn’t like to live a healthier, more serene life in these turbulent times?

Using the power behind affirmations can truly change your life for the better. Put this into practice this week by writing down three short affirmations about three areas you’d like to make positive changes in your life. Be sure to state your desires in the present tense and in a positive way. Practice repeating these statements as many times as you can for 7 days and see what wonderful changes reveal themselves in your life.

Foster-To-Adopt – Private US and International Adoptions – How To Choose Which Is Right For You

Foster-To-Adopt – Private US and International Adoptions – How To Choose Which Is Right For You

Considering adoption can be overwhelming & confusing. Should I adopt from foster care, international adoption or private US adoption? It can seem overwhelming to have to choose and the answer for each family will be different. Information to help you decide which path is right for your family. Orphans, no matter where they are from, need a loving family – are you willing to be that family?

Adopting from Foster Care

Why adopt from Foster Care:

There are 115,000 children available for adoption in the foster care system. (Number quoted is from Adopt Us Kids)

The requirements are often very flexible. You do not have to be married and whether or not you already have children does not matter. Your race, sex, and sexual preference (homosexual or not) does not matter. You can have many different medical conditions and still be a wonderful foster/adoption parent. (International adoption often bars those with medical conditions.) It does not cost much, if any money, to adopt from foster care. The training, home study & legal fees are usually paid by the state. If you do have to pay anything out-of-pocket, you will get reimbursed when you file your taxes by taking the adoption tax credit. (Visit IRS for more details) Children from foster care may come with monthly stipends (older children or those with special needs) to assist you with covering their expenses. For some children, this money will continue to be available, even after you have adopted them. These children are often also available for free college tuition (at a state school).

You can adopt children from your own state or from out-of-state. Children are often posted on websites, such as AdoptUsKids.org

How to get started – contact your state’s Department of Family & Protective Services.

Things to consider about Foster Care:

You can choose to foster-to-adopt. Which means, you will have a child placed in your home as a foster child. The child will be in the process of being declared available for adoption. You will have an opportunity to have the child in your home before you make a final decision to adopt or not. The downside is, there is a small chance after the child is placed in your home that the birth family may choose to take the child back. This window of opportunity for the birth family is small – usually 6 months or so. Once that period is over, the child can not be taken from you. You will need to talk to your social worker to learn more about the individual circumstances of your child. Children were removed from their families and often come from abusive backgrounds. Children may have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused. Children may have been exposed to alcohol or drugs while in the womb. An excellent book to help you parent these children is “Parenting the Hurt Child” by Gregory Keck and Regina Kupecky. Only 3% of children in foster care are less than one year old. The odds of getting a baby are slim. 60% of children in foster care are over 6 years old. 60% of children are minority. (Numbers quoted are from the Adoption Institute)

Private U.S. Adoptions

Why adopt from private adoption:

Parents choose to give up their child for adoption and often pick out the family for their child. These adoptions are often through profit and non-profit agencies. You may also go through an adoption attorney. If you would like a newborn, this is often the only way to add a newborn to your family. Most private adoptions are for children under 6 months of age. Many times, the adoptive parents will be able to bring their baby home from the hospital. More information is available about the child. You will likely know information about the birth family, including medical history. More choice – you have a greater say in choosing your child. (In international adoption, a social worker will choose your child for you & you can only decline them if they have significant medical conditions.)

Things to consider about Private Adoption:

Private adoptions are not cheap. The price will vary depending on the agency you use, but are usually between $10,000 – $20,000. Also, these fees may vary greatly based on the circumstances such However, do not forget about the adoption tax credit from IRS. You may qualify to have a tax credit of up to $13,000. You will usually know who the birth parents are and they will (usually) know who you are. The birth mother is often the one who picked you! You will have the option of keeping in contact with the birth mother/family (an “open adoption”). Birth mothers can change their mind. However, this is governed by law & will be determined by the state that you live in. Most states limit it from the day the child is born up to 30 days later. You may not get to choose the gender. You may be matched with a child that is not born yet & the gender is unknown.

Adopting Internationally

Why adopt Internationally:

There are 143 million orphans in the world. (Number by Unicef)

You can pick the country you adopt from & your child’s ethnicity. The most popular countries for adoptions are (listed in order) – China, Ethiopia, Russia, South Korea, Guatemala, Ukraine, Vietnam, Haiti, Kazakhstan, India. (Source – US State Department)

You may be able to choose their gender. Each country has different rules on this issue, but many will let you state a preference. If you already have a child, this may impact whether or not you can specify gender.

You can request a certain age. While newborns are unheard of in international adoption, it is possible to get a child under 1 or older. Most children will be closer to 1 by the time the are brought home, if you request a baby. There are many toddlers and younger children available (as well as older children).

Very unlikely, if not impossible, that a child once he/she is matched with you will be taken back by the birth family.

Things to consider about International Adoption:

It is expensive. No way around this – the costs are usually around $20,000 – $40,000 or more. You will pay for your agency, your home study, training, the orphanage donation to the foreign country, travel costs and more. However, for many people, the cost may be a deciding factor. If you decide this is the right option, there are many ways to raise the funds, including refinancing your home, no interest adoption loans, an extra part-time job, gifts from family & friends, fundraisers with your church, etc. There is a tax credit of up to $13,000 from IRS and many grants available.

Choose your adoption agency carefully. Some agencies are only out to make a profit, others are out to help children find a permanent home. Talk with others who have adopted using your agency. Research the agency on Better Business Bureau. Join adoption groups online & see what others are saying about the agency.

International affairs can greatly impact your adoption. A country that may be open for adoption today could change their laws tomorrow. Countries change their requirements for adoptive parents & this could interrupt your adoption plans. Visit http://www.adoption.state.gov/ for more information about international adoption.

This will usually be a closed adoption. You may know very little if anything about the birth family. You may not have any medical history about the child or their birth family. Sometimes, the child’s birthdate is just a guess.

The requirements for international adoption are very strict. If you have medical or mental conditions, you may not be allowed to adopt. If you have too many children, weigh too much, have too many divorces, or even single or homosexual, some countries will not allow you to adopt. Each countries requirements vary, with China being one of the strictest and countries in Africa often more lenient.

NO MATTER WHERE YOU ADOPT FROM:

There are 143 million orphans in the world. You can choose to make it 143 million – 1.

As you begin this process, be sure and talk with families who have adopted. If you do not know of anyone who has adopted, contact an adoption agency and ask for references. Some churches have orphan/adoption ministries where those who have adopted get together for support. They would love to have you join them and ask questions. Also, the internet is full of families who blog about their adoption. You can “follow” their blogs and see what they experience. One family you can follow is the Redden family as they adopt a special needs little girl from China. http://whenlovebringsyoutome.blogspot.com/

TV – Is TV News More About Ratings And Money Than Bettering The World In Which We Live?

TV – Is TV News More About Ratings And Money Than Bettering The World In Which We Live?

“Images can either imprison or liberate us.” -Roberto Assagioli

Tonight I saw a panel of White House correspondents talking about what it was like to cover the White House. They ask questions of administration officials because there are always questions to ask, then write their story and go on camera (if they’re a TV reporter) and report what that official said. The last question an audience member asked the panel was, “Sure you ask questions, but what else are you doing to see if there’s more to the story than you’re being told? It’s your job to inform us, your viewers, if there is.”

After years of covering county, city, and state government in Texas (and those were the days we asked elected officials tough questions and we didn’t let them off the hook — the questions were only the beginning of the research we did to tell our viewers what their government was doing with their tax dollars), I began a 9 year career with a TV station that allowed me to do over 2,000 feature stories about unique people, off-the-beaten path places, and it is the feature story which I came to love doing so much that I want to say we need more of, not less, in our daily news broadcast. These were stories of people who would never be seen on a TV news broadcast except that my photographer and I decided to do a story about them.

Why are feature stories vanishing from TV news broadcasts? The public speaker, television feature reporter, and movie maker are storytellers. While there is an underlying structure to what the person in each venue does, a structure the audience is often unaware of, there seems to be a trend these days away from content (a central focus) and a movement toward the shock value of an experience–what is said, what is heard, what is seen.

The adrenalin response becomes, in this context, more important than the cognitive ability to process (think about) what one is experiencing.

An example of this is the “shock quotient” sought by many local and national television newscasts which is resulting, more and more, in the disappearance of feature stories that uplift the viewing audience. These “feel-good” about-your-community stories are vanishing from TV news broadcasts and being replaced with news stories directed at target audiences that Orlando Sentinel syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker says are “culturally locked in perpetual adolescence.”

Shock value is in. If the story bleeds, it’s likely to lead, be the top story in that evening’s newscast.

Having created over 2,000 feature stories over a nine year period during my tenure at a CBS-TV affiliate in Texas, I know the importance of preserving the broadcast tradition of telling the stories of local unsung heroes, innovators, and visionaries — material routinely overlooked by the “ratings hungry” TV news outlets.

For nine years, my photographer and I traveled Texas looking daily for interesting stories about people who were making a difference in the lives of others.

These were not the lead stories at 6 & 10 — slots reserved for the dramatic “hard hitting” news stories you might call,”Why are you living in this community, it’s so scary?”

Still, to the credit of my news director who felt my stories were important and fought to keep them on-the-air, my positive, upbeat storytelling played an important part in our station’s offerings and ratings success.

My phone rang often with a viewer telling me, “I rush home to see your stories every day.” I received hundreds of letters with messages such as, “I’ve lived here all my life. I had no idea what you showed us today even existed.” These viewers appreciated being told they lived in a community with good people around them who were making tangible contributions.

Sensationalism dominates newscasts nowadays. For example, TV news operations are in the business of looking for ratings grabbers: fires, wrecks, and crime scenes — anything that will jump out at the viewers at the top of a newscast. “People say they want more positive stories, but when we tried that we lost viewers (which translates into lost advertising revenue) to our competitors,” a TV news director friend mentioned to me recently.

Solid reporting, beyond the easy, sensationalist fare, requires independent thinking and motivation.

One station I worked for assigned each news reporter to a beat. A beat means city hall, county commissioners, the police and fire department, the state capitol. It was the reporter’s responsibility to bring story ideas to the morning news meeting. Rarely did a reporter come to the meeting with an original story he or she wanted to do. Most waited to be assigned a story from the news desk (a task usually taken on by the news assignments editor or, in small markets, the news director).

I’ve seen more than one news director frustrated by young reporters’ lack of curiosity about their community.

A news director I used to work for told me, “When I started in this business twenty years ago, we had a solid core of proven journalists working for us. Over the years, the commercial aspect began to dominate. I’ve been forced to hire younger and younger people who do not read, write, or deliver material well at all. The newsroom has become a kindergarten. As the news conglomerates purchase stations, they are focused on the bottom line — profits. I’m forced to hire reporters at wages barely above minimum wage. All they apparently want to do is serve their six months here and move on to a larger TV news market, make more money and move up to an even bigger market.”

Another veteran CBS employee told me, “We have people on the air now who are younger than some pairs of shoes in my closet. And it shows!”

Local broadcast news has become more about ratings and station profits than solid news gathering, compiling lists of trusted sources, compelling writing, and good storytelling. The term “seasoned reporters” is rarely heard. The traditions of Edward R. Murrow, Douglas Edwards, Walter Chronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, and the early journalistic years of Barbara Walters at NBC are all but lost on today’s generation of new hires who have only the vaguest ideas of the standards, values, and news ethics that were so important to these broadcasting legends.

Younger reporters, with their eyes on the next job, rarely stay with a station long enough to understand local issues. It takes time and commitment to get to know people who can help you when you need a sound bite on a certain issue.

A TV news reporter must cultivate friendships at every level (political and social), leave a business card with every one he/she meets, and obtain contact information. I know a seasoned reporter who had a file with hundreds of contacts. When assigned a story, she knew exactly whom to call to get the background information she needed to write her piece.

The professional reporter must also have the ability to write a great story and the skills to edit video to match audio, even if another person in the newsroom is assigned to edit their story.

What’s involved is caring enough to get all the necessary pictures and sound bites at the scene. Once in the editing bay, there’s rarely a chance to go back and shoot the footage that was overlooked! When crucial visual and sound elements are missing (which happens often), it’s usually because the reporter didn’t know what his/her story was about and failed to instruct the photographer regarding camera angles, close-ups, medium-shots, and establishing shots.

When I first started doing daily feature stories, it was an uphill battle to convince station management that they were a legitimate part of a local newscast. The station photographers argued, “Features are not news. The’re soft. They have no action.”

The people in sales told me, “Viewers will lose interest, we’ll lose ratings, and we’ll have to lower our sales charges to advertisers if we can’t continue to deliver the audience our clients are paying for.”

In other words, if it bleeds, it leads.”

At first the station higher-ups thought feature stories about the unsung heroes in the community were a waste of time. “Not exciting enough,” was one viewpoint I heard.

I held fast to the belief that a balanced and fair newscast includes stories about the people who are making a difference in their community.

Our “Live at Five” program, showcasing my daily feature story and live segment that I introduced, heoped us continue our ratings dominance at #1 in the market where I worked.

Soon the sales department began selling my “Live at Five” feature segment, as a package, to local advertisers. The TV ad sales people told me our “Live at Five” show was on in most businesses around town. It was a “hot property.” Area businesses were willing to pay premium prices to have their ads placed before and after the segments called “James’ Corner.”

Our ratings soared because those stories made people feel proud to reside in Central Texas.

I pointed out in a news meeting a few years ago that people do not move to an area because it leads the state in murders. They do not choose an area because it’s a terrible place to raise kids, the schools are unsafe, the water supply bad, and the taxes high.

The unfortunate trend in local news is shorter and shorter stories, with newscasts “stacked” with twenty or thirty tapes–tell the day’s bad news quick, quick, and even more quickly. “Must compete with the viewer’s jumpy attention span. Keep the newscast moving, moving, moving–faster, faster, faster.” Pause and reflect? Waste of time!

I’ve found that the feature story needs at least two minutes of airtime — even more when the subject matter (or person themselves) is compelling. A slower-paced story provides an opportunity to let people know, “Our station cares about news — all the news that’s relevant to your life. That’s why you’ll find a balance of hard news, weather, sports, AS WELL AS the story that says, “Aren’t you glad you live here? There are many good people in this community. This is the story of one of those folks.”

“The brain works on energy and energy illumines reality,” the British novelist Colin Wilson wrote. “Imagine the difference between a picture gallery with the sun shining through and the same gallery at night, illuminated by a half dozen candles. The pictures would lose a whole dimension of meaning by candlelight.”

Throwing the spotlight of meaning on today’s global news by the in-depth way a story is covered, letting us see a particular event’s many kaleidoscopic facets from many angles, and not caving into political or advertiser pressures (which means that certain diamond sparkling aspects of a story will never see the light of day) must be replaced by the next leap forward in television news: giving us the detailed and comprehensive information we need (presenting all sides of an issue)to assist our own very good minds in making relevant choices that matter.

Every person or nation has a story. TV news is brilliant when it comes to showcasing the worst aspects of human nature. It’s time, I believe, to build an information hi-rise that includes the best that’s in us as well.

I’ll never forget an individual who volunteered his time and energy collecting and repairing bicycles which he, and a group of local police officers, distributed to inner city children on Christmas day. The looks on these children’s faces when they saw THEIR special bicycle was, as the credit card ad says, priceless.

He phoned me several days later. “I was feeling pretty down on myself until I heard you say all those nice things about me in your story. Then, I saw the looks on those kids’ faces…”

“To the dull mind all of nature is leaden. To the illuminated mind the whole world sparkles with light.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Broken heart, hurt and loneliness are three perfect ingredients, which, when mixed together, make our lives dull and miserable. These three things can easily take over our lives and once part of our lives we can see nothing but unhappiness. Very little do we know that we can become happy again and learn to appreciate the feeling of love again through love affirmations. A love affirmation is a simple statement that we continually say to ourselves, which, over time, can help to bring about permanent changes in our lives.

Love affirmations help us to rediscover the love we have lost. An affirmation is a thought that we have during the day which is directly linked to our sub-consciousness. These love affirmations guide our sub-consciousness into a certain direction which can either have positive or negative effective.

To bring about a change in our lives through love affirmation we first need to start thinking positively and wave a good-bye to all our negative thoughts which leads to a unhappy life in the first place. For example instead of ‘nobody loves me’ start thinking ‘everybody loves me’. The key behind reuniting with love is to start loving yourself in the first place and feel confident about you. Adopting a positive love affirmation about yourself such as ‘I was born out of love’ can be very helpful in helping you regain your self esteem after a breakup or a rough fight.

Secondly change your attitude towards others. Respect their feelings and think that everyone deserves love just like you do. Once you adopt this love affirmation, love will find you. You will no longer see life as miserable but will find it to be filled with love.

Wording used in love affirmation is of great significance. Only use words that are simple and can be easily accepted by your mind, only then will power of love affirmations work. Preferably try to use word ‘love’ when making use of a love affirmation. Something along the lines of ‘I am worth loving’ or ‘I will find my true love’ or ‘I am committed to loving …’ are all good examples of love affirmations.

Love affirmation can not only be used to find love for yourself but it is also about discovering God’s love. For example thinking ‘I will love others as extensions of my own Self, and of the love I feel from God.’ will draw you nearer to God and His universal love.

Love affirmation also helps you understand your companion and builds a strong bond between couples. Even to find romance you first need to find your inner-love which can only be achieved through love affirmation.

Love affirmation can also be used to draw ourselves closer towards nature. Learn to love nature and most importantly spend time with nature more often. Try thinking about good things such as ‘I love the smell of fresh flower’ or ‘I feel refreshed’.

To get used to love affirmation, note down any positive thought you have during the day maybe on a piece of card or whichever way is convenient to you. During initial stages of love affirmation technique we might get negative thoughts as well. Note these negative affirmations as well and at the end of each day try replacing them with something more fruitful thought. Review your affirmations twice a day to have a maximum effect of love affirmation. Initially it takes time to step out of a dark miserable world but once you succeed in taking a step nothing can stop you and with the help from repeated love affirmations you will ultimately stop at nothing but love.
