Write The Speech First

Write The Speech First

Get The Speech Right Before Anything Else

The one mistake that many speakers make is getting their promo and press in order and sending it out and they don’t even have their speech scripted out yet.

This was my problem. I had a beautiful one sheet and headshot and brochure, but my speech wasn’t even anywhere near ready for the podium. I was still an amateur and it showed.

Write your speech. Then re-write it again and again until you’ve got it the way that will make people listen and want more. Then, start working on the other stuff.

When I first started going on stage, I spoke too fast and I slurred my words and I didn’t look at all like the person that my professional press indicated that I was.

People would see my press and assume I was a pro. But what they saw on stage was anything but.

You must write and re-write your speech first. Then you must practice it over and over again. Have it down so you can recite it in your sleep. Anywhere, any time, you can do it.

It’s the only way you can go on stage with confidence. If you don’t know or believe in your speech, it will show and you will come off as not being an expert at your topic.

I talk about humor therapy. I’ve been doing humor for over twenty years, but when I first went on stage to do it as a professional speaker, I looked like someone who had just got up from the audience and tried it for the first time.

Fortunately, I taped that performance and it’s embarrassing to look at it now. But it’s also a great learning tool. It showed me what not to do next time.

I have since practiced my speech over and over again and I have re-written it several times until I got it tight and full of the information they need.

I’ve added a message in the speech. They need a message they can take home with them.

Now, my promo goes with my speech and I am considered an expert at humor therapy.

Learn your speech first and then work on the promo and marketing yourself. Speak for free wherever you can; Kiwanis, Rotary’s, Civitans, Chambers of Commerce, anywhere they’re willing to hear you until you get the speech down the way you want it. Then, start marketing yourself as an expert in your field.

How to Write Good Book Review

How to Write Good Book Review

My blog job includes reviewing many books and e-books and even articles. Writing a good book review isn’t easy task, but don’t worry – as an expert I will share some tips with you in this article. There are few things you need to remember when reviewing a book.

First of all, you need to read the book. Believe it or not, but it’s not that obvious. I know many people reviewing books without reading them. They read few pages, and they write negative review. OK, I understand some books are terrible, and all you can write about them will be negative, but please. Honest review is a review based on book you have read. Personally I’ve read many books that were waste of time, but I managed to survive them:). Know this – when you read terrible book, you gain wider perspective, and you can admire good book more.

After reading, you can get to work. There are few important elements required for each review. First you should present the general plot or “about” when we’re not dealing with fiction. Your reader must know what the book is about. Next, you can post your thoughts about the general “about” or plot – let the readers know your review.

Then, let’s focus on the content. Tell your readers what you like, and what you dislike about the plot or the content of the book. Provide people with your own point of view and opinions on the subject the author wrote about. Tell readers if the book is educative, or engaging. For example, if you’re reviewing a paranormal fiction, tell the readers how accurate the paranormal inside is and how engaging the plot is. When reviewing how-to guide to WordPress, tell readers how accurate the book is according to WordPress technical manuals.

Finally, discuss technical issues – text, spelling errors, bad grammar, DTP, graphics and illustration, and even as simple thing as cover – is it hard cover or paperback? Technical details are good, people like to know physical things.

In the end, give the readers your final opinion – is the book worth reading or not? Do you recommend it? If yes, why? If no, why? Give readers a simple decision – so they won’t have to think to hard if the book is worth purchasing or not.

All of this creates fine review every reader will enjoy. Remember – your review is important, as it might drive sales, or make the book publisher’s mistake.

How to Write a Book Review That Brings Literature To Life

How to Write a Book Review That Brings Literature To Life

What’s the point of writing a book review, other than to do a favor for your friend who just self-published on Lulu? Don’t get me wrong; the author will appreciate the effort. However, any brownie points you score with the author are secondary. If you think I’m about to tell you that book reviews make good content for search engine optimization purposes… you’re right. They do. But that’s not the primary benefit I’m talking about, either. Am I about to suggest that writing anything, even a book review, is a great practice to hone your skills as a writer? Well, actually, yes! But that’s not the point I wrote this article to make.

Here’s what I’m driving at. If you read a book about marketing your business, a book review will help you to actually market your business. Read a book about organizing your home? Write a book review, and watch the piles of clutter start to shrink around you. Don’t ask me to prove it. If you want proof, do it and see what happens.

For years, I have read books and thought up great ideas, only to put the books back onto the shelf without taking any action. I know I’m not the only one. I don’t have a complete solution to this problem, but I do have a tool to offer you that may inch you a single step forward: the book review. Have you ever read a positive attitude or self-help book, for example, and pledged to adopt the habits they prescribed? Ever read a novel whose protagonist inspired you to write the Great American Novel? If you’re like most readers, the urge probably didn’t last any longer than a TV commercial.

Let’s Face It: human nature isn’t likely to change any time soon. With an ever-expanding menu of shiny objects to distract us and a 24-hour day that stubbornly refuses to grow any longer, the average human attention span continues to dwindle into the microsecond-scale. Is it any wonder that literary inspiration has such a short shelf life? A book review isn’t going to change that, of course, but the process of re-creating your experience through a review will refresh your memory of the book, and it will give others a window into the world that the book’s author has created. You just might inspire someone to read the book who wouldn’t have read it otherwise.

Basic steps:

Before starting the book review, think about the audience. Which readers are likely to find your review? This depends upon the location where you choose to post it. What do you suppose is important to this audience? (I recommend doing this before writing anything of any kind.)

Write about your own experience of the book. What changed in your way of thinking? What inspired you? Don’t just summarize the book; personalize it.

Describe your experience using sensory words. For example, you could talk about how you read the book while you were sitting outside in the fall and could smell the burning leaves. Sensory experiences are the most memorable.

Tell readers why they should read the book. How will their lives change from reading it? What made the book truly stand out for you?

You can write your book reviews right here, on EzineArticles. You can also post them to a number of other sites, such as Squidoo or HubPages. If you decide to write reviews regularly, you can start a blog for that purpose. If you start a blog, you can invite others to write guest posts so that you don’t have to write all of the reviews yourself.

Give it a try. Write a list of the most influential books you’ve ever read, and post a review about one them this week.

News Commentary Online Challenged at Last – How to Write Articles on News Topics

News Commentary Online Challenged at Last – How to Write Articles on News Topics

It seems everywhere we look there are tons of news articles. We just can’t get away from it. Every time we go to a home page there is another news article. Our television sets now have 24 hour news from CNN. Something that was unheard of only a couple decades ago. We have newspapers, radio, TV, cable, and even the Internet news blurbs all day long. Now people have twitter and mobile telephones and they can’t get away from it.

When someone important dies, everyone knows about it in 10 minutes all the way around the world, as they receive instant messages, news alerts, and flash bulletins. So, with all this known how is a writer or an author of online articles able to get ahead? After all, the competition for news is blasted at such a high rate of speed it is almost impossible to compete. By the time you write up a news article there are already 50 articles with the exact same story showing up on Google using specific keywords.

Still, over the years I’ve written over 2500 news and political articles, and I’ve received endless comments and e-mails from them, as well as millions of article views. How did I do it? It’s simple really when you are reading news stories, read four or five in the same venue about the same story. Then recall other similar things that have happened in the past and tie those all together, and then give your opinion of how this affects various aspects of industry and life in our society.

By doing this you are creating commentary and information that is about News Topics, but it isn’t actually the news. Best of all these articles stand as Evergreen articles for long periods of time that help with the human record. Next time, another news event comes out, along the same lines as those before your old article of what happened last time will have new life, giving people a new perspective on an older story. Please consider all this.

How to Write a Book Review

How to Write a Book Review

INTRODUCTION

One of the most important things in writing a good book review is the very first sentence. Open with a statement that will really grab the reader’s attention. It could even be a question. Be sure to write something that will make the reader of the review want to read this book.

SYNOPSIS

Give a brief synopsis of the book. Tell the readers what you enjoyed about the book and if you didn’t like something mention that too. Don’t be afraid to say anything negative. Most books have good points and a couple of bad points. Why did you like the characters? Just don’t state that you enjoyed the book because the characters were excellent. Tell the reader why the characters were excellent, etc!

SUMMARY

Sum up your review in a few sentences with your recommendation. Once again, state why or why not you would recommend this book and be sure to give some detail.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

1. Don’t ever copy anyone’s review. Be sure it is in your own words. You should never use copyright material.

2. Don’t be too wordy. People tend to get bored by a long review. Say what you have to say but don’t drag it on and on.

Article Marketing – Write Book Reviews and Combine Reading With Making Money Online

Article Marketing – Write Book Reviews and Combine Reading With Making Money Online

The online marketing funnel comprises a lot of components. One of them is article marketing and today we will treat the topic of book reviews. By reading this article you will find out the details of book reviews and how you can use them to make money online. As an online marketer you will have to read a lot of your business specific literature. So why not write a review and publish it online?

A review follows a certain structure, as all articles do. Take it into consideration and just start:

1. Introduction

Tell your readers why you are going to write the review, what it can serve for and give a short summary of the book’s content. Write a short bio of the author.

2. Center part

The center part is the review. Discuss the motive and the pro and cons of the book’s arguments. Point out positive and negative arguments. Explain them. Make a connection between the book and your online business. Tell your readers what they can learn and how they can apply this knowledge to their online businesses.

3. Summary of arguments

Make a summary of your book review and come to honest conclusions for your and your readers’ online business. You might want to give advice. Keep it simple and honest.

4. Link your Amazon account to the article

By linking your Amazon account to your review you might put the book you wrote the review about on the list, even other books about the same topic. For your readers this might be of interest in order to learn more about the topic.

5. Publish the review

Make an orthography and keyword check and publish your review on an article marketing site like Hubpages or Squidoo, for instance. Bookmark the review and send it to the social sites.

Article marketing is a most interesting part of the online marketing funnel. As I mentioned at the beginning, you will have to read a lot of books about your online business, so why not share your knowledge, spread the book’s information by fomenting yourself as an expert doing the very review of this book?

Your readers will appreciate your information.

Real Estate Development Content – How to Write Articles on Commercial Construction

Real Estate Development Content – How to Write Articles on Commercial Construction

During the height of the real estate bubble, you could not pick up the newspaper without reading about some huge real estate development project; perhaps a new housing tract, golf course, shopping center, government building, or business park. Of course, after the real estate crash all we’ve seen is such projects going bankrupt, and very few new projects being slated. The few that we do hear about are very small and often, government projects, hospitals, or basic infrastructure.

In the commercial construction industry there are trade journals, websites and lots of news, most of it obviously is not very good, due to the economy, lack of funding, and over regulation, as construction companies wait for the economy to recover and the recession to end. Still, positive articles are needed to be written, and we need more positive commercial construction news articles online. Something we haven’t seen in a while.

When writing on construction topics for the general public there are a few recommendations I’d like to make because things are changing in the sector. The public likes to hear about green buildings, alternative energy projects, and the number of people who will be employed once the project starts. If you will consider this when writing articles on this topic, you might just find that there are local magazines, and newspapers that are willing to pay you for freelance articles.

Still, besides all that you will be doing a good service for the economic development of your region, and nearby cities. Commercial development means growth, it means jobs, and it means a return to the way things were before the recession. That is something people would like to hear and I hope you will write about it. Please consider all this.

Affirmation statements -we hear them spoken often by motivational speakers, authors, writers etc., but what can we personally do to harness the power of affirmations in our own lives?

Think about a time in your life when you desired to make a change – something major, like finding a new job, moving to a new city or home, or something less momentous like a New Year’s resolution to improve your overall health. Can you think of a past experience like that? Now, think about the tools that you used or steps that you took to help guide you through that transition and keep you focused on achieving your goals while making that change.

These tools in effect, involved you setting in motion a series of events to accomplish the goals you’d set out for yourself, and one of the easiest ways to achieve success is to create affirmations.

Affirmations are very easy to use and quite powerful once you get the hang of practicing this daily exercise. Affirmations keep you focused on what’s important to you and help you achieve positive transitions. Basically an affirmation is a declaration that something is already true and has come to fruition in your life in the present moment. You have to believe what you are looking to achieve or obtain has already arrived in order for ‘it’ to show up in your life.

If your desire is to create personal well-being, first choose a phrase that describes what you desire. For example, if you desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then your affirmation statement could say, “I feel good and look good when I live a healthy lifestyle.” Or “I enjoy the great feelings I get from exercising daily.” Short powerful statements are more focused and work much better to bring about results than long, drawn-out paragraphs.

There are some rules to follow when creating an affirmation that I’d like to share with you.

Rule # 1: The phrase must be in the present tense, such as “I feel good”, as opposed to “I will feel good” which implies that at some point in the future you ‘might’ achieve your goal. Remember to phrase your affirmation as if your desire.

Rule #2: The statement must always be written from a positive perspective, instead of a negative one. For example, you wouldn’t say “I don’t feel good when I am not healthy” as this places your health – which you are trying to change – in a negative context. Always phrase your desire/affirmation statement in a positive context and in the present tense.

Rule #3: Repeat often. After you create an affirmation, write it down on something that you can keep with you, like a notebook or card to put in your purse or wallet, or place it somewhere that you look at often throughout your day such as on your bathroom mirror or your desk at work. Make sure that you read your affirmation statements as many times during your day as possible.

Studies have shown that using the power of affirmations can lower stress and I have found this to be true in my own life. When I get clear about what I want in my life and focus on my desires with affirmations every day, I am more content and peaceful. What we focus on grows, so the more you focus your attention on your affirmations, the more likely you are to create positive changes in your life and achieve your dreams.

My favorite book on affirmations and the power of healing is Louise Hay’s, You Can Heal Your Life. In this fascinating book you can learn more about the healing power of affirmations and how you can harness them to improve your overall health and well-being. And frankly, who wouldn’t like to live a healthier, more serene life in these turbulent times?

Using the power behind affirmations can truly change your life for the better. Put this into practice this week by writing down three short affirmations about three areas you’d like to make positive changes in your life. Be sure to state your desires in the present tense and in a positive way. Practice repeating these statements as many times as you can for 7 days and see what wonderful changes reveal themselves in your life.

Inspired by her passion to support others on their own personal growth journey, Carolee Laffoon founded Affirmations To Go, a company which encourages people to create lasting personal affirmation products to carry with them daily to keep them focused on their goals, hopes and dreams. Carolee publishes a monthly newsletter “Affirmation Inspirations” to share her favorite affirmations, inspirations, and product specials. Visit Affirmations To Go and sign up to receive her newsletter as well as participate in her special monthly Affirmations product giveaway.

Tips to Write Book Reviews

Tips to Write Book Reviews

Writing a book review can be challenging. A book review is a description of the book in question. It is basically a critical analysis of the book. Book reviews are an evaluation of the quality and content of the book. If you are writing a book review, you need to consider the meaning and significance of the book. You need to focus on the purpose of the book. You need to highlight the positives and negatives of the book. If you are looking to recommend the book, you need to present evidence to support your evaluation.

Book reviews basically reflect the opinion of the reviewer. However, the review should be a fair and brief description of the book. It should help a reader make a wise decision. When writing a book review, make sure to give relevant information about the book. This includes title, author, type of book, copyright date, ISBN, special features like maps, etc. Also, state the purpose of the author in writing the book, i.e. why did the author choose to write on a particular subject and not another subject? Get to know about the intended audience. Has the author catered to them?

Incidentally, there has been an increasing demand for children?s books like ?Clouds? and ?My Little Red Book?. Animal, computer and educational books are also in great demand. You can choose from a wide range of all kinds of cheap books online. You can browse the web to know about a cheap discount book or a specific book on sale. However, make sure to read a relevant review that will help you make a well informed decision. Reviewing a book is no child?s play. The first thing that needs to be considered is the book you would like to review. You need to choose a book that interests you. Choose a theme or subject that is relevant to you. It is pointless to review a Science Fiction book if you can?t make head or tail of science fiction. So choose a subject that engages you and interests you.

In order to agree or disagree with the author’s point of view, it is a good idea to jot down notes while reading. Jotting down small notes will help you review the book easily. It will also help you with quotes in your review. You should be able to understand the author?s thesis and style. Focus on his style of writing- is it formal or informal? Another important aspect about book reviews is the accuracy of the information presented in the book. Is the information relevant, accurate and engaging? Are the concepts well defined? Is the language used lucid and convincing? You need to ask yourself these questions. Look for footnotes- they should provide significant information. Also look for maps and illustrations wherever necessary.

When writing book reviews, make sure to include the following elements- title, author, publication date, publisher, edition, pages, price and ISBN. Make your opening sentence striking and convincing. It should immediately catch the attention of readers. Be fair and unbiased! You can also include information pertaining to the author?s qualification, reputation, etc.

Copywriting – Write for Performance for High Income

Copywriting – Write for Performance for High Income

Did you know that performance copywriting offers big dollars? Not only can you make a high income, but much audio-visual (AV) copywriting is short – think radio advertising, for example.

Performance copywriting includes writing audio-visual scripts for radio and TV, for DVDs, writing speeches, writing presentations and a new form of AV copywriting – writing YouTube scripts. If you enjoy TV advertising, you’ll enjoy writing it too, for small companies which don’t have the budget to hire an advertising agency and are looking for a skilled copywriter.

How to Break in to Performance Copywriting

The easiest way to break in to audio-visual copywriting is to write for radio. This is because at many local radio stations, the DJs write the majority of the advertising for smaller companies which don’t go through an agency, and they hate it.

So just tape a few ads on your favorite local radio station, and then transcribe them to see how they’re written. You should now be able to write some samples, using the transcriptions as models. Then take your courage in both hands, and go along to your local radio station and ask to see the program director. Just explain you’re a new copywriter, and ask whether they have any on-going work.

Once you’ve written some radio scripts, you’ll find that AV copywriting projects come to you – the people at the radio station will pass on your name, as will those people for whom you write.

Easy Tips for Writing Copy for Performance

Here are some AV copywriting tips to keep in mind:

1. Performance copywriting is still copywriting to sell, so you need to focus on triggers which will lead the viewer or listener to take action. Use outlines to ensure that you cover everything you need to cover in a script;

2. In radio, remember to include the advertiser’s name and address a couple of times – people don’t listen to radio advertising with much attention;

3. Read your scripts aloud – record them yourself on your computer or on a digital recorder. If you find yourself stumbling over words, change the script;

4. Time yourself, while reading your script at a normal pace. All AV copywriting has to fit into a time constraint.

Promoting Yourself As an AV Copywriter

If copywriters are rare birds, AV copywriters are even rarer. This means that if you take the time to build yourself a decent portfolio, you’ll become known for this skill, and will have all the work you can handle. What’s more, you’ll be able to charge whatever you please, because other copywriters stick to small print and display advertising, search engine marketing on the Web, and direct response; this means there’s little to no competition.

Your portfolio is the key to your success, so take the time to build it, by taking on local AV jobs for businesses, and at your local radio and TV stations. Once you’ve created your portfolio, go along to your local Chamber of Commerce meetings, and make yourself known. Business people always need speeches and other scripts, so these jobs are easy to get.

You should also set up a small Web site so you can promote your skills, and do some online advertising. The success of the online video sites, like YouTube, means that many companies are looking for AV copywriters.

Good luck with your AV copywriting career – it’s a lot of fun, and highly profitable too.
