First, what is a book review and why do people want them?

You have just read a book and are offering your opinion. Essentially, you are providing a mini-version of the book so someone else can decide for themselves if it’s worth their money and time.

A book review is a description, analysis, and evaluation of a book. It talks about the quality, meaning, and significance of a book. It isn’t just a short, 6 paragraph retelling. It’s not a book report or a summary.

It’s your reaction to the strengths and weaknesses of the material. It’s how you felt about the book’s purpose, content, and authority.

There is no right or wrong way to write a book review. Book reviews are personal and reflect your opinion. There is no minimum or maximal length. If you’re writing one for an Amazon, you will need to be concise and to the point – but if you are writing for a magazine, you could run 1500 words or more.

One way to write it is to state what the author has tried to do, compare (in your opinion) how that author succeeded, and back it up with evidence.

Here’s some guidelines:

1. Write an opening statement giving essential information about the book: title, author, first copyright date, type of book, general subject matter, special features (maps, color plates, etc.), price and ISBN. (In online reviews, this can be skipped, since it is part of the blurb for the book and that data is just a few paragraphs above.)

2. State the author’s purpose in writing the book. You can often get this from their preface or first chapter. Where they don’t come out and say so, you can ask yourself these questions:

a. Why did the author write on this subject rather than on some other subject?

b. From what point of view is the work written?

c. Was the author trying to give information, to explain something technical, to convince the reader of something?

d. What is the general field or genre, and how does the book fit into it?

e. Who is the intended audience?

f. What is the author’s style? Did it suit your own tastes?

g. Scan the Table of Contents to see how it’s organized sensibly.

g. How did the book affect you? Did you change any ideas you held because of it? How does it fit in with what you think or your own personal world view? Did it bring up old memories of yours?

h. Did the book achieve what it set out to do?

i. Would you recommend this book to others? How come?

3. Sum up the book in an elevator pitch – if you had to recommend this book to someone during an elevator ride, in the time between floors.

4. Explain how the author got his point across. What descriptions did they use? How did they tell the story – and did they keep you interested? Did their arguments make sense? Did they leave anything out or leave you unconvinced at the end?

5. Check into the author (this is fairly easy on the Internet) and see if what you find – reputation, qualifications, influences, biographical, etc. – establishes them as an authority. Do you see any relation between the author’s philosophy, life experience and book you’re reviewing?

6. If relevant, make note of the book’s format – layout, binding, typography, etc. Are there maps, illustrations? Do they help your understanding?

7. Check the back matter. How’s the index? Are the footnotes accurate and useful? What does the bibliography look like – long, short, haphazard? Make notes of what you find.

8. Summarize (briefly), analyze, and comment on the book’s content and its summary. List the main topics, and briefly summarize the author’s ideas about these topics, main points, and conclusions. Use specific references and quotations to support your statements. Once you have a good grip on that book, the conclusion will some simply.

It has been said many times in the Publishing Industry that it is not politically correct to write your own book reviews. If You are an Author Do Not Write Your Own Book Reviews, they say. But who is they and why not? Well, apparently this is not done, but no one can tell us why. Oh they might give reasons such as; It is self-promoting or it is ego-centric?

Indeed neither of these arguments make sense because Authors give speeches and do book signings, that in fact is promotional stuff. And we know that authors do have egos, without them they most likely could not write such stuff or care too.

My thinking is that, yes it is against the PC and Traditional way of thinking in the Publishing Industry, but if one believes in their work and wants the world to view it they must do everything within their power to see that such information gets out to the readers. Thus, if you TRULY care about and BELIEVE your work is worthy then you should write your own self-book reviews to help the process and disregard social norms or industry non-spoken guidelines.

If some people fault you for this or choose not to read your book review fine, that is their choice, but you will reach all the readers who want to hear from the Actual Author. If you worry about what everyone thinks and make sure you are always PC or proper then how can you EVER compete with those who do what it takes, whatever it takes and are relentless in their pursuits?

I submit that you, that you cannot compete with such individuals and will be so far behind you can never catch up unless you promote your ideas and books yourself. Writing and getting published or promoting your book or educating humans is not a job for weakness, excuse makers or hiding behind the bushes afraid to speak out and take a stand.

Weakness is not an honorable trait, neither is following the crowd, mob or mindless masses. Wake up humans. Think about this issue in a reality perspective. As a writer or author you may be asked to speak about your book or business either at a book signing or networking meeting. As a business owner, you may have to make a training presentation about the new policies or practices you are setting. It is important to know how to give a good presentation.

A good speech or presentation begins by knowing your audience. By curtailing your talk and content to the needs of the listeners you automatically have their attention. Before you start writing your speech, ask yourself a few questions:

Who is my audience-are they mostly male, are they young, or are they professional businesspersons?

What are their needs/pains/challenges?

What do they want/need to hear?

Use Both Doors

Consider what the audience will hear and what they will see in your presentation.

Your content should be value-rich and contain your original thoughts, ideas and opinions. Be sure to do your research and give statistics to back up your information. This makes your talk more credible and people will see you as an expert on the topic. Use stories to illustrate your point and remember to use words that paint pictures in people’s minds.

When you present the speech, you will want to use appropriate hand, facial and body gestures as well as voice inflection to keep the attention on what you are saying. Monitor the audience’s response. Are they nodding, smiling or sitting up in their seats or are they yawning, looking around the room or talking to one another?

Organization

Make sure you have a catchy opening. A joke, question or story is a good way to open your speech. It sets the tone and grabs the attention of everyone in the room. Then give a short synopsis of what your speech is about. If you say you are going to give three tips about how to do something, be certain you include those three points and make a deliberate transition from one to the next. The ending should summarize what your thesis and remind the listeners of the three (or more) points you made, then wrap up with something funny or that provokes an emotion. Give a “take-home” point or call to action so the listeners think about what you have said later on.

Dress for the Occasion

Try to dress one notch higher than you anticipate your audience will. For example, if your audience is going to be wearing suits and dresses, you don’t want to show up wearing jeans-dress to match their attire. If the audience will be wearing medical scrubs, then wear corporate casual clothes.

Get some training

If you are totally uncomfortable making a training presentation or speech to a group of people, you might consider taking some acting or speaking classes. I have been in Toastmasters (http://www.toastmasters.org) for three years and have found the practice I get in a non-threatening, educational environment very beneficial for speaking in public, making presentations or speaking one on one with a client. Not only are my thoughts more organized and my speech concise and well-articulated, I have gained confidence-not to mention great friends and networking acquaintances.

Affirmations are one of the tools you can use to radically change your life. There is nothing new age, mystic, trendy or fashionable about them. Affirmation is part of an ancient ‘ Secret’, re-discovered and brought back to the limelight by TV. film and press, transforming with it several people into very wealthy gurus.

Affirmations have been around since man found the use of language and there is no secret ritual to use them.

You can basically have anything you want! This tool, if used correctly, will help you change, grow, and heal yourself.

Your mind incessantly interprets your experiences as an internal dialogue. These thoughts are generated on a deep level by your beliefs which were formed and accumulated from the time you were born. 

We can’t control most exterior events of our lives but we do control how we interpret and react to them.

We create our own reality.

When we change our interpretation a change takes place in our reality.

So become aware of your thoughts. If you change your thinking, big changes will happen in your life.

Take a minute to think about why you are reacting to something or someone.

Get in touch with yourself. Accept the fact that these thoughts may have helped you in the past but they are out of place now that you have chosen to accept only positive thoughts and positive living.

While doing the new affirmations your mind will let go of the negative messages even if you are not aware if it.

Watch out also for resistance within yourself. With certain affirmations you may question, “What in the heck” – “are you kidding?”

It is ok, it is an old habit that is about to be changed. You grew up and had these thoughts for almost all of your life. Now it is time to form a new habit and you need lots of practice.

For the beginners the easiest way is to choose and write down two or three things you want changed.

For example, if you feel unloved and financially strapped, one of your affirmations could be: ” I am now ready to receive more love and wealth” and you may add  ”from the vast supply of the universe”.

If you also wrote down ‘low self-esteem’  the affirmation could be: “I am an awesome man/woman and I feel good about myself”.

Be creative, upfront and fearless. You are making a statement to yourself of your intentions.

Here are a few simple guidelines:

1- Present tense. Start all your affirmations in the present tense and have them already accomplished. You are telling your conscious mind that the affirmative action is taking place NOW and it is final. I AM HAPPY,  I CHOOSE JOY,  I HAVE CONFIDENCE. It is stronger and much more powerful than, I will be happy, or I am becoming happy, and so on.

2- How to phrase your affirmations. You can copy from an extensive list you’ll find on the Internet, use the examples below or simply write it down in your own words. Do it as plainly or as poetically as you speak. ” I am energetic and full of enthusiasm. I am safe, I am a prosperous man/woman. I attract positive people, I release my anger.” Make copies of it and leave it around the house, car and your office desk. The more you are reminded of the positive affirmations the more your mind will accept the new concept you are bringing forth. You will create a new positive reality and the universal energy will do the rest to connect this good energy to other positive energies.

3- Positive means Positive. Your subconscious usually focuses on the verb and relates it to past experiences. If you have fears, phobias or whatever, be careful with your choice of words. If you are afraid and say I am not SCARED, it will register I AM SCARED. The NOT was assimilated and ignored by your mind. Say instead I AM COURAGEOUS or I AM FEARLESS. Don’t use affirmations that have a negative attachment. You can comfortably use I ACCEPT, I CHOOSE, I DESERVE, I AM.  I developed one affirmation to counteract the negative thought that eventually peeks through, so I suggest you add it to the batch,  ”I ACCEPT ONLY THE GOOD AND THE POSITIVE.”

Starting as you wake up, say the affirmations out loud or in your head five times. Repeat the same process three to four more times during the day, the last one just before going to bed.

I suggest you end the affirmation session with a thank you  note. Gratitude will reinforce and validate the affirmations. Thank God, Jesus, a Spirit, the Force, the Universe or whatever you believe and feel comfortable with. 

Visualize your affirmations with feelings and emotion. See yourself exactly as you are stating.  It will add an extra psychological dimension and have a much deeper impact on your mind. Using this method of visualization early in the morning and at night will make your affirmations much more successful.

You can use affirmations to help build self-confidence, self-esteem, self-improvement and personal growth. It can also help conquer your fears and anger management. Affirmations have been successfully used to relieve anxiety and depression and are an excellent tool for weight control.

If you don’t think personal tech is important then obviously you don’t watch the stock market during the day or CNBC news. After all, one statement from Steve Jobs and Apple’s stock skyrockets, along with the entire tech sector; and later in the day; “lo and behold” if the entire the entire Dow doesn’t post a strong gain. Consider if you will, just in the recent past, we’ve had the iPhone, the new Kindle, and all these new smart phone all-in-one gadgets.

Yes, it seems sometimes high-tech toys are something we just can’t turn on. They are getting to be as American as apple pie. Everyone wants to get in on the latest new thing, and the early adopters will pay a premium for the high-tech toys of the future, that is, if they can get them in their hot little hands today. Perhaps, it is for this reason that I recommend that online article authors that like to talk about and discuss technology spend some more time writing personal tech articles.

Over the last couple years I’ve written nearly 50 articles on the topic, and it is amazing how much traffic they get, it’s just cool. People want to know about personal tech. It is one of the most highly searched terms on Google. Of course, if you’re going to write personal tech articles you need to know a few things. People want to know the juice. They want to know all about the good stuff, and the problems.

They want a real product review, not a bunch of hype, and not a lot of talk about the color. They want to know the particulars. They want to know about the software, they want to know about the speed, the conductivity, the interface, the RAM, the operating system, and they want to know when it will become obsolete, and what comes next. They want side-by-side comparisons of all the competing products.

Most of all, they want to know where to get one!

If you can write online articles to give this information to the public, they will eat your articles up, refer them to friends, and there is no way you can stop them from going viral on the Internet. Trust me, it’s happened to me a number of times. I hope you will please consider this.

Welcome to Reader Views Patricia. You have written a book that is a definitive guide to successful authorship detailing critical information about the publishing industry. It is a pleasure to have you speak about your book with Juanita Watson.

Juanita: Patricia, you have written many books and articles regarding writing, publishing and promoting books. What motivated you to write this one?

Patricia: “The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book” was a longtime coming. My first few writing/publishing-related books were sort of niche topics–article-writing, book promotion, how to write a book proposal and a handbook for young writers. But I realized, while working with authors and talking with hopeful authors at book festivals and writers’ conferences, that many of them were still struggling. They were approaching the process of writing a book all wrong. They needed a great deal more help, guidance, information and resources than I had offered through my other books or than I could offer through my numerous articles and workshops. I recommend my books and colleagues books, but I truly couldn’t find what they needed under one cover. So about a year and a half ago, I decided to write that book.

Juanita: “The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book” is full of invaluable information that must have taken years research. Do you feel your book would help with all problems a new or experienced author may encounter?

Patricia: The publishing industry is changing and there are a lot more options and opportunities out there for authors now than ever before. Of course, authors are going to come up with new questions from time to time–that’s why I always ask people who purchase any of my books to contact me via email if they have any questions that the book didn’t answer. Although, I worked on the book for a mere ten months, it represents 20 years of my own experiences as a published author and as a publisher. It is also a result of the research I do every month (and have done for the past 5 years) toward writing the SPAWN Market Update. This is an 8 to 13-page newsletter brimming with industry news, resources, publisher/agent interviews and opportunities for authors and freelance writers.

This time-consuming project has helped me to keep my finger on the pulse of the industry. Plus, I used all of the best publishing-related books, newsletters and Web sites I know about to collaborate my information and I interviewed several industry professionals. If a hopeful or struggling author reads this book from cover to cover and then uses it as a reference while they’re working on their project, they have a much better chance of succeeding in this business.

Juanita: I truly appreciate your authenticity and the heartfelt concern you have for authors. You make yourself very accessible through email, and continue to keep current in the industry, passing on new information through your newsletters. What has been the feedback so far from readers of your new book?

Patricia: The feedback, so far (and remember, this book is only a few months old), has been extremely positive. But think about it, the hopeful or struggling authors who read this book and takes it seriously, can conceivably save thousands of dollars, earn thousands of dollars and, potentially, experience the publishing success they so desire. I do enjoy helping authors and freelance writers. You know, there wasn’t much help or support out there for serious career writers when I entered into this biz. I feel as though I blazed some trails. I didn’t realize this until people started asking me for advice. I was startled by how much information I had gathered through my experiences over the years. And I have to tell you, I feel blessed to have experienced the yukky right along with the good, because you learn from both. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve been treated poorly by publishers and editors. And I am constantly researching, watching, studying and learning for my own benefit as well as for those who read my books and articles.

Juanita: Why do you feel so many people have the dream of writing their own book?

Patricia: I wonder about that sometimes. Maybe a large portion of the population has always wanted to write a book and we just didn’t know it because it was a far-reaching dream. The dream has become more realistic. Now, anyone can write and publish a book. We have the technology and we have countless more publishing options.

Juanita: Many people attempt to write and publish a book yet get caught up in the business aspect of the process. What advice would you give to aspiring authors that get discouraged along the way?

Patricia: Know what publishing is all about BEFORE you write the book. Study the publishing industry. Understand publishing options and the ramifications of those options. Understand your responsibilities as a published author. Write a book proposal before writing the book, especially for a nonfiction book. If you are writing fiction, at least be aware of the genre in which you are writing and know your options. Who is your audience? What is your competition? Also be prepared to promote your book. Almost all new authors, who have not done their homework, go into publishing expecting their book to sell by the truckload through major bookstores nationwide. They don’t realize, until they learn something about the publishing industry, that the author is responsible for promoting his/her own book. It’s a shock when they find out that their book may never see the inside of Borders or Barnes and Noble.

This doesn’t mean that it won’t sell. It might sell well in an appropriate venue. But how will the author recognize the appropriate venue unless he/she spends some time understanding the industry and his/her responsibility within it. If you know what you’re getting into beforehand, you will be prepared and you have a much greater chance of succeeding.

Juanita: You have written many books and articles, are president of SPAWN (Small Publishers, Artists and Writers Network), teach seminars and workshops, and have an editing and consulting service. What is the most rewarding aspect of the work you do?

Patricia: I’ve been writing for publication for over 30 years. Hundreds of my nonfiction articles have appeared in over 200 different magazines such as Writer’s Digest, Canadian Author, Writer’s Journal, Entrepreneur, Cats Magazine, Woman’s Own, Your Health, Catholic Digest and many others. I’m the author of 24 books. Eight of them are writing/publishing-related. I established my own publishing company in 1983 before publishing was fashionable. I love to write and still do a lot of writing. But I’ve discovered that it is more rewarding to help others with their writing projects. I do that through my books, workshops and by working one-on-one with clients.

Juanita: Where do you think the future is in books with so much information being available over the internet?

Patricia: There is nothing like holding a book in your hands or curling up with a good book. The Internet is a wonderful research tool, but a book can have so much more information in easily accessible form. All you have to do is refer to the index in order to locate the information you need. Sometimes, as you know, it takes hours to find enough information or appropriate resources on the Internet.

Juanita: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome in your writing career that would be inspiration to your readers?

Patricia: Probably becoming comfortable with risk-taking. Anytime you put yourself out there through your writing, you are making yourself somewhat vulnerable. I mean, rejection is always a possibility. In order to be successful as a freelance writer, you must risk rejection. In order to be successful as an author, you must take even greater risks–trusting a publisher or publishing service or financially backing your project, for example. This is why it is so very important to understand the business of publishing before entering into it. For some, various methods of book promotion means taking risks–risking rejection from the public who might bypass your book at a book festival, for example, or who may walk out on you while you’re speaking about your book.

For me, hanging out my shingle as an editor and publishing consultant was risky. But I’ve learned to weigh the negatives against the positives in these situations. Sure, I’m risking something every time I put myself out there in any manner–self-publishing a new book, requesting a book review, agreeing to an interview, giving a workshop, attempting a new promotional activity. But one thing is for sure, if I don’t take the risk, I won’t ever have the opportunity to succeed in that area. And I have to say that I have experienced success far more often than not. When I didn’t, it was usually due to lack of research and knowledge.

Juanita: Patricia, that is great advice that obviously comes from experience. Your career and present endeavors can only serve as great inspiration to authors and aspiring authors. I have read the book review written for Reader Views and have to completely agree with the rave recommendation given by the writer. She, an author herself, states that your book is uncomplicated and straightforward, and she ‘can’t see how you could possibly fail’ using the information and guidance in your book. You have compiled a wonderful book Patricia, certainly outperforming others on the market. Do you have any additional comments for your readers?

Patricia: Keep on writing. If it is in your heart to write, write. But when you decide to enter into the big, unknown field of publishing, shift gears from creator to businessman/woman. If you can’t do this, hire someone to work alongside you in your publishing endeavors. And don’t forget to have fun along the way.
