Have you ever shot a bow in your life? If you haven’t, then you should give it a try. I have a lot of experience with this sport because I was introduced to archery when I was 14 years old and I’m still involved in it now that I’m 31. Well, you can’t blame me for doing it for more then fifteen years because it’s really fun. Anyway, archery bows are not just for those who hunt deer or turkeys. Anybody can enjoy the experience of shooting a bow. To tell you the truth, I have never been hunting in my life. I only practice on targets that are made from hay bales. However, there are a lot of supplies that you should consider before you get too excited and turn into Robin Hood.

You are probably aware that the sport of archery dates back many centuries. In fact, the bow and arrow not only pre-dates the firearm because it also came before a lot of useful new-age weaponry. There are a few reasons why I personally love archery bows. The first one is that the bow and arrow are virtually silent. An obviously arrow travels completely different than a bullet. There’s no loud noise involved but there may be a soft whip of the wind.

I also like the fact that archery bows cannot just go off. You have to draw and release an arrow in order to put it in flight. This means that a small child is not going to accidentally shoot him/herself with an arrow. I also like archery bows because they have outstanding penetrating abilities. If you take a handgun and shoot at a heavy sandbag, then the bullet will probably stick inside it. On the other hand, the arrow will blow through the sand bag if you use a bow. I also like archery because it is fun. It’s something wonderful you can pass along to your children. In fact, I’m seriously considering teaching my daughter archery. She is really excited with the thought of being able to wrap her hand around that bow handle.

Of course, a great deal of responsibility comes with archery. It would be wise to have the right place to enjoy your archery bows. If you have neighbors right next to you, then it would be a very bad idea to shoot your long bow in the back yard. Archery can be difficult if you live in the suburbs. You will have to search for an archery range in your area. You must take the proper safety precautions at all times when it comes to archery bows.

Billiard Hustlers

Have you ever played a great game of pool with your friends and then suddenly wound up the victim of all the billiard hustlers in the room? What was once supposed to be a fun evening can turn sour if you let yourself be taken by a billiard hustler. There are ways you can prevent yourself from being a target.

Always keep your guard up. Billiard hustlers sometimes stand at the outskirts of the pool hall and observe other players. They try to be discreet and usually make it look like they are conversing with their friends. What they are actually doing is looking for a target.

If you decide to bet with friends, be wary of any strangers who want a piece of the action. Billiard hustlers become encouraged by groups of friends out to have a good time when he sees they are fond of gambling. Try to decline if they say they want to join in. You never know when things can get out of hand, especially if you’ve been drinking.

Don’t be fooled if you think they aren’t that good a player. Billiard hustlers may spend an entire evening playing pool badly with their partner or with a friend. What they are really doing is waiting for an opportunity to take advantage of an unsuspecting player. Also, if you are a regular at a particular pool joint, be wary of anyone you don’t recognize. Anyone you don’t know can be a potential billiard hustler.

Billiard hustlers are con artists who make you believe they aren’t good players. They are really expert players making their living preying on your naiveté. If you want to have a good time with your friends at the pool hall, make sure you keep your eye out for billiard hustlers. You could be the next victim.

Chapter 13 – Online Advertising – Throwing a Banner into the Works

As you may have gathered from the title, the focus of this chapter is largely on banner advertising but don’t for one minute believe that banners are the be all and end all of online advertising. “Banner advertising” is a bit of a misnomer – modern online creative advertising is about a lot more than just banners.

The Multi-Purpose Nature of Advertising

Advertising, whether online or offline, always has a number of objectives:

o	Building brand awareness

o	Creating consumer demand

o	Informing consumers of your ability to satisfy that demand

But when you really think about it, they can be distilled into just one action: Increasing Sales!

Advertising is based on the simple economics of demand and supply. Advertisers aim to stimulate a consumer need and then satisfy that need. Create the demand. Then satisfy the demand.

Building Brand Awareness

Making people aware of your brand or product is an important long-term goal. Once customers know about you, you’ve taken that first big step towards gaining their trust… and their patronage. It’s a simple fact that the best known brands do more business. And therein lies the rub.

The ultimate goal is to do more business and sell more.

Building brand awareness is perhaps the key strong point of online creative advertising. It’s largely visual, making it an ideal channel for promoting brand collateral.

Creating Consumer Demand

Brand and product awareness is also about creating demand. Advertising needs to convince consumers about what they should want and why they should want it. Modern online advertising can provide a great way to communicate the USP’s of your product, thereby helping stimulate demand.

Aspiration is a function of knowledge. You can’t want what you don’t know about.

Satisfy Consumer Demand

Once your consumer wants something, they need to know of your ability to satisfy that want. If your brand building has been effective, they know you exist. Now tell them how you can deliver what they need.

Driving Traffic and Sales

If your Online Advertising campaign doesn’t drive traffic, then there’s really no point in it, is there? All forms of online marketing need to drive traffic in the long term. But what about the short and medium term?

That’s where the immediacy of Online Advertising comes to the fore. Unlike traditional media advertising, Online Advertising can turn the potential customer into an actual customer right there and then. What’s more – you can track exactly how effectively your campaign does this.

Payment Models

Depending on the primary goal of the campaign, different payment models can be used:

CPM or CPI

Paying for exposure. CPM refers to Cost Per Thousand and CPI to Cost Per Impression. This is usually how a campaign would be priced when brand awareness is the primary goal. It’s also how most banner ads are priced in South Africa.

CPC

Paying for clicks. CPC stands for Cost Per Click. Normally associated with Paid Search Marketing, banners can be priced this way when the aim is to drive traffic. This is seldom used in South Africa.

CPA

Paying for acquisition. CPA refers to Cost Per Acquisition. This model means the publisher carries all the risk. The advertiser only pays when an advert delivers an acquisition.

If you’re into buying banner advertising, this is the best way to pay – if you’re selling it, it’s the worst way to charge.

Not surprisingly, the CPA model is not commonly used for banner advertising and is generally associated with Affiliate Marketing. Of course, the lines blur when you’re publishing an affiliate banner.

Flat Rate

Sometimes, owners of lower-traffic sites choose to sell banner space at a flat rate i.e. at a fixed cost per month regardless of traffic or amount of impressions. This would appeal to a media buyer who may be testing an online campaign generally targeting niche markets.

So What Exactly Are Banners?

In simplest terms, a banner ad is a hyperlinked image. The image carries the message and the hyperlink takes the visitor to the advertiser’s landing page.

Of course it doesn’t have to merely be an image. In fact, this form of advertising has come a long way since the early days of images that say “click here!” and drop you off at the homepage of the advertiser’s website.

Banners can contain other forms of rich media as well and many use interactivity and sound to draw attention. The use of action scripts and technologies like Flash has taken this form of Online Advertising to a whole new level.

Types of Banner Ads – Size Matters!

As mentioned before, “banner advertising” is something of a misnomer. Banners come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Perhaps calling it “rich media advertising” or “online creative advertising” is more descriptive.

If we break it down traditionally, banner advertising can be separated into various categories according to their size and shape:

o	Banners

o	Full Banner: 468 X 60

o	Half Banner: 234 X 60

o	Micro Bar: 88 X 31

o	Vertical Banner / Mini Skyscraper: 120 X 240

o	Leaderboard: 770 X 60

o	Buttons

o	Button 1: 120 X 90

o	Button 2: 120 X 60

o	Micro Button: 80 X 15

o	Square Button: 125 X 125 / 120 X 120

o	Rectangular ads

o	Medium Rectangle: 300 X 250

o	Square Pop-Up: Any size, but 200 X 200 is common

o	Vertical Rectangle: 240 X 400

o	Large Rectangle: 336 X 280

o	Rectangle: 180 X 150 and other variations

o	Skyscrapers

o	Wide Skyscraper: 160 X 600

o	Skyscraper: 120 X 600

o	Half Page Ad / Super Skyscraper: 300 X 600

While the sizes above indicate the generally accepted dimensions of ads, rich media technologies mean the ads themselves can expand beyond the allocated area of page real estate. Expanding ads, that “pop-out” on mouse-over, overlay ads that appear on top of site content, and ads that incorporate interactive elements have become very popular.

But Why Banner Advertising?

In previous chapters we went on and on about the value of marketing tools that focus on giving consumers what they want when they’re looking for it. Now, all of a sudden we’re changing course and suggesting a method of interruption marketing? What’s that about then?

Horses for courses – and some campaigns are just better suited to visual means.

o	You’re promoting travel packages. What stirs more emotion – an image of a tropical paradise? Or the words “tropical paradise?”

o	Want to build your brand within a specific sphere? Why not brand, through banner advertising, the websites of every major player in that niche?

o	Running a competition? Keep your target market’s eye on the prize

o	Launching an exciting new sports car? Images with a call to action – “test drive it now” – or interactive rich media that highlight all the exciting new features as you mouse-over that part of the car on the image

Interactivity

Since banners can contain rich media, they offer levels of interactivity that other forms of advertising can’t reach. Get your target market to not only see your banner, get them to play with it too. Interaction builds a bond and improves the chances of the consumer remembering your brand tomorrow.

Animations, games, video, flash – and you thought banner ads were just hyperlinked pictures. Modern Online Advertising is able to bring together a number of other online marketing tactics:

o	A few years ago, flash micro sites were all the rage – now the same functionality can exist right within the ad

o	Viral Marketing: clever viral marketing games or “send to a friend” functionality – again from right within the ad

o	Video – check out video previews from within the ad

Targeting

Online ads can further directly target your intended market by various means:

o	Geo-Targeting – Online Advertising has the ability to target by country, province or city, and can even drill down to IP address

o	Network / Browser Type – Markets can further be targeted via networks / browser types such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, MAC etc

o	Connection Type – Users can be segmented on broadband or dial up connections

o	Day and Time – Chose any time of day, any day of the week. This usually depends on the client objective of the campaign or the product itself

o	Capping – Limiting the amount of times a user sees a particular ad

Measurability

Banner ads, like all eMarketing tactics, are measurable. Track click-through rates and you get an idea of exactly how many people are responding to your call to action. Some publishers even have the ability to do post-click tracking i.e. you can track the user all the way to a sale if that is the purpose of the advert.

Similarity with Traditional Media

eMarketers regularly bemoan the fact that it’s sometimes difficult to educate the market on the value of Internet marketing techniques. Traditional buyers of advertising have been conditioned in a certain fashion and have come to understand advertising in a certain way.

Banner advertising goes a long way towards bridging the advertising divide. Ads have a set size, they can look very similar to print ads and they occupy a particular bit of real estate in a publication with a particular number of eyeballs looking at it. It’s easy to understand and it does the things buyers are used to expecting advertising to do.

Bottom line – if done correctly, online advertising also builds your brand, and increases your sales!

Every one wants to have travel and leisure at some point in their lives and it is good to have some destination tips to get much fun and lesser stress in having a vacation. You can always use the Internet as a tool in getting a bird’s eye view in the vacation destination you have in mind. This is pretty helpful especially if you are bringing the whole family along.

Some people have about a month long vacation stay in some of the worlds best tropics like Hawaii and staying in a hotel is a bit too expensive. There have been changes in the hotel and inn industry by the arrival of the concept of renting a house, condo units, or villas for your month long stay in one place called vacation rentals. People have an additional choice to stay in a more homely place compared to generic hotel rooms that can limit what you are able to do. You do not have to pay much for the Hawaiian accommodations by staying in some of the alternative places that some companies offer.

Browse over the Internet to look at the alternatives like Kauai Vacation Rentals that can give you an array of places to stay at a lesser fraction of the price compared to a month long stay in the hotels. They can give you Kauai Condo Rentals that can be near the seashore or a cove that can help you feel more relaxed and further enjoy your privacy. You can have the amenities like a regular condo unit and you can save a lot of money from cooking in instead of eating out.

In Hawaii gold courses are also a big attraction factors for the golf enthusiasts. Some Kauai Cottage Rentals are located near gold clubs and courses that can literally take less than five minutes for you to reach. This is indeed good news for those who are looking into golf practice or learning within their vacation time span. You can really better your golf travel and results. You can go golf course hunting if you do happen to have mastered your nearby gold course.

If you are the beach type, then Kauai Beach Villas are for you. Imagine your staying place to be just a short walk into the wide Pacific ocean. Some beach villas even extend to the sea literally so you can just jump on the water for a dive in your beach villa balcony.

Haena Vacation Rentals can also give you alternative choices of your place of your stay. Your family or company can really appreciate the freedom in the vacation rentals that they offer as well as the privacy. Family activities can get creative with the staying place near beaches, resorts, or gold courses. You can organize a lot of things to do during your stay without thinking of extra charges or high hotel rates services.

Vacation rentals like Haena Rentals are greatly advantageous for those who are on a budget but still want to enjoy the Hawaiian tropics. Even if you do not have a house or villa over at the tropics, renting condos or cottages can give you a sense of truly being at the place. This is because you can act unrestricted and unbounded by the four walls of the hotels.

Cooking With Coffee: Why It Is So Good

Every day, all over the world, millions of people start their day by drinking coffee. Aaah! So good! Nothing like that first cup, right?

There are many variations of this popular beverage that have been tried and perfected over the years, undoubtedly by you and people you know. In fact, the simple act of coffee consumption has truly become an art form. Think about it: coffee drinkers routinely consume iced coffees, mochas, cappuccinos and literally hundreds of other varieties and recipes of this caffeine-driven energizer. Even for those people who prefer decaffeinated coffee, the act of drinking coffee is also an art that delivers the pleasing taste without the caffeine jolt.

So then, is it surprising that the result of this love affair with the many flavors of coffee has led to coffee becoming another ingredient in a wide variety of cooking recipes? No surprise at all. The result is that these recipes are anything but ordinary! Perhaps you are not the type of person who will pour your morning cappuccino into a meat loaf or baked bean recipe. Or freeze leftover brewed coffee in ice cube trays to use later as seasoning. Will it surprise you to learn that many top top chefs do this and much more with coffee? Why? Because of coffee’s hint of bittersweet chocolate, touch of berry, whiff of roasted nuts and red wine. These flavors and scents make coffee a fantastic cooking ingredient.

How do chefs use coffee in cooking? For example, they substitute brewed coffee (partially for the most part) for stock or water in stews, sauces and even baked beans. Coffee grounds make a terrific dry rub. Coffee grounds seal in the meat’s juices and help to caramelize it. The result is a juicier and tastier piece of meat with a beautiful color on the outside that makes the dish very appealing to the eye.

Still not convinced? Let’s look at some cooking with coffee 101 tips:

1. Pair coffee with flavors that are strong and flavorful such as beef, pork or chicken. This is important. Coffee should not overpower the meat aroma and taste; but enhance it. A coating of coffee and other spices tenderizes a cut of meat. Result: a more succulent and tasty main course.

2. Coffee is, quite simply, a spice in the kitchen. Cooks use rubs, marinades and sauces in cooking because they add a delectable complexity to grilled meats and keep them moist. Coffee punctuates its distinctive taste into soups, stews, and tomato sauce. Through experimentation, you will learn to use just the right amount of coffee to add that special flavor that makes an ordinary dish truly unforgettable!

3. Use coffee in both ground and brewed forms for cooking. Ground coffee is great for rubs and marinades. Brewed coffee is the perfect addition to stews or sauces. It makes sense, doesn’t it? It is easier to add brewed coffee to a sauce and prevent problems with “grainy” sauces or marinades.

4. Have fun cooking with coffee and don’t be afraid about getting creative with coffee! Use your favorite flavor of coffee in your recipes. When you experiment with a new type of flavor taste it brewed first to understand its flavor components and choose the right amount of coffee for the recipe. There is no magic rule of thumb for what works or does not work in “coffee cuisine.” Most regular black coffees pair well with citrus, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, salt, garlic, ginger and pepper. Flavored coffees pair well with similar flavors added to the marinade or sauce. For example, pumpkin spice coffee will go well with a pumpkin soup or pie. Remember, the idea is for coffee to enhance the flavor of the dish you are preparing, not to dominate it.

Cooking with coffee has become mainstream. It used to be that coffee cuisine was reserved only to chefs employed by exclusive restaurants, resorts, or those attending specialty cooking schools. However, this has changed completely over the past decade. Celebrity chefs use coffee in their cooking regularly and feature coffee in their recipes regularly. With more than 900 unique flavors present in coffee, according to coffee experts, chefs like the idea of using coffee in their cuisine to add variety to their dishes and come up with endless delectable menus. Of course, to get the best results use freshly roasted top quality specialty coffee preferably delivered to order from a gourmet coffee source.

Examples of coffee in recipes include,

Butter-smoked, espresso coffee-rubbed venison whose rub includes finely ground espresso mixed with salt, ancho chile powder and ground black pepper. Or pork tenderloin encrusted in a rub of ground coffee and black peppercorns for a beautiful crust with brown edges. Rolling filet mignons in freshly ground espresso beans before grilling will make heads turn from the delicious taste and beautiful finish on the meat.

Another regular practice quite common in the South is to add brewed coffee to chili, or use coffee in braising liquid for brisket. Or coffee as a savory ingredient in red-eye gravy. Many chefs add about 2 quarts of brewed coffee to 4 gallons of stock to start reducing it to demi-glace to add depth and richness to the stock.

Remember, use coffee as a spice in moderation and you too will succeed with coffee cuisine. Next time you go to a restaurant and taste a particularly delicious stew or sauce, ask if it includes coffee as an ingredient. The answer may surprise you.

So, what about drinking a delicious cup of Mexican Altura Superior gourmet coffee? Bon Appetit and enjoy your coffee!

Shopping for Kitchen Cabinets – Choosing the Right Cabinets for Your Price Range

Kitchen Cabinets are by and large the core of any kitchen. They can be highlighted by appliances such as the refrigerator, stove, cooktop, dishwasher and microwave, or these appliances can be modified to blend in by using panels that match your cabinets.

Shopping for them can be intimidating, especially for a first time buyer. There are hundreds/thousands of major cabinet companies, and many more smaller custom shops where you can get any cabinet made from any species of wood that your mind can imagine. Add to that list the explosion of RTA Kitchen Cabinet importers, and the laminated manufacturers, and suddenly the list can be overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that higher price always means high quality in construction, or more features being available.

In the past, pricing had always been the way to categorize cabinets. Traditionally, the higher-quality cabinets simply cost more money. As I mentioned before, with more and more importers conforming to the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) building standards, some of the RTA kitchen cabinets can actually offer a sturdier box than the traditional, made to order kind. Regardless of what type of kitchen cabinet you decide to go with, it does not take much effort to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the actual cabinets.

Most manufacturers build their base and wall cabinets in standard sizes. The base cabinets are often 34.5 inches tall and 24 inches deep. They come in widths starting at 12 inches and can go up to 48 inches often in increasing width increments of 3 inches. Wall cabinets are often 12 inches deep and 30 inches or 42 inches tall. They also come in the same size widths as the base cabinets. Wall cabinets also come in several different heights and depths for locations such as over the refrigerator or over the microwave/hood range unit. With custom kitchen cabinets, you have even more choices available, since they will be created specifically for your kitchen space.

Different semi-custom manufacturers make different-sized cabinets for all sorts of special looks and situations. It is not uncommon to have one cabinet extend beyond adjacent cabinets to create a distinguished look. It pays to shop around to see all of the different possibilities and special features offered by the custom and semi-custom cabinet manufacturers.

One of the biggest advantages to true custom cabinets is the ability to make one giant base or wall cabinet instead of separate boxes that are screwed together by the installer at the jobsite. A custom-cabinet maker can easily make one giant base cabinet 8 feet long that installs as if it were a piece of furniture. The same is true for wall cabinets. The advantage of this method is the lack of vertical seams where two traditional cabinet boxes would mate up to one another.

Pay particular attention to the materials used to build the cabinets. Some of them are made with minimal-quality engineered lumber, particleboard, or fiberboard. . If you plan to load a wall cabinet with heavy traditional china, the weight of the dishes may cause the cabinet to pull apart over time. This is particularly true when it comes to the semi-custom cabinets that the name brand cabinet manufacturers sell at the big box stores (which is why price is not always an accurate gauge of cabinet quality). Many of the RTA Kitchen Cabinet manufacturers use solid plywood sides, which obviously creates a stronger box than a particleboard or fiberboard box. When it comes to custom cabinets, the material choices are endless and can usually be specified by the customer.

Another factor that will determine the price of kitchen cabinets is the material used to hold it together. Custom manufacturers will often use a combination of dovetailed joints, wood biscuits, and glue to create tight joints. Mid-grade cabinets will have a wide range of materials holding them together (staples and nails on the lower end, to cam lock assembly and wood glue on the higher end). Most RTA Cabinet Manufacturers utilize the cam lock system, which creates a nice sturdy cabinet, and when enhanced with wood glue, can last a life time. Steer away from any cabinets that are using staples, wooden dowels, or just screws. The strength of the cabinet will be compromised at the joints with these weaker joining materials.

Introduction to C++ Programming

This article gives you an introduction to C++ Programming from ground level.

This article won’t teach you all the fundas of C++ programming rather it gives

you the base to learn C++ programming, remember that for further learning, the

base should be strong and this is what this article tries to do. It would let

you know many fundas which will help you in further learning of the the language.

C++ was developed in 1980s in the Bell Laboratories by Bjarne Stroustrup as an

object oriented programming language. This language is considered by many as an

extension of the programming language C. The extension of programming language

C to create C++ is obtained by adding classes to C. This is why C++ was initially

called “C with Classes”. The C++ programming language derives its

name from the increment operator used in C, which increments the value of a variable.

The symbolic name of C++ rightly indicates that this language is enhanced version

of C.

Features

of C++ Programming Language:-

C++ programming language is highly flexible, versatile and very powerful

    programming language for developing any software specially the system software

    namely operating system, compilers etc.

   C++ is most ideally suited language for development of reusable programs,

    which is very important to keep the production cost minimum.

Comparison of C++ Programming Language

Let us see how C++ compares

with other programming languages. All the programming languages can be divided

into two categories:-

Problem oriented languages or High-level languages: These languages have

    been designed to give a better programming efficiency, i.e. faster program

    development. Examples of languages falling in this category are FORTRAN, BASIC

    etc.

   Machine oriented languages or Low-level programming languages. These languages

    have been designed to give a better machine efficiency, i.e. faster program

    execution. Examples of programming languages falling in this category are

    Assembly Language and Machine Language.

C++ stands in between these two categories. That’s why it is often called

a Middle level language, since it was designed to have both: a relatively good

programming efficiency (as compared to Machine oriented languages) and relatively

good machine efficiency (as compared to Problem oriented languages).

Getting Started with C++ Programming

Communicating with

a computer involves speaking the language the computer understands, which immediately

rules out English as the language of communication with computer. However, there

is a close analogy between learning English language and learning C++ language.

The classical method of learning English is to first learn the alphabets or characters

used in the language, then learn to combine these alphabets to form sentences

and sentences are combined to form paragraphs. Learning C++ programming is similar

and much easier.

Therefore, instead of straight-away learning how to write programs, we must first

know what alphabets, numbers and special symbols are used in C++, then how using

these, constants, variables and keywords are constructed, and finally how are

all these combined to form an instruction. A group of instruction would be combined

later on to form a program. Character SetCharacter set is a set

of valid characters that the language can recognize. A character represents any

letter, digit or any other sign. C++ has the following character set:

Letters A-Z, a-z

Digits 0-9

Special Symbols space + – * / ‘ ” ( )[ ] etc.

White Spaces blank space, horizontal tab, carriage return, newline etc.

Other Characters, C++ can process any of the 256 ASCII characters as data or as

literals.

The alphabets, numbers and special symbols when properly combined form constants,

variables and keywords. Let us see what these are:-

Constants: Constants are data items that never change

    their value during a program run. C++ programming language allows several

    kinds of constants.

   Variables: Variables are quantities that may vary during

    program execution. Variable names are names given to locations in the memory

    of computer where the value is stored.

   Keywords: These are the words that convey a special meaning

    to the language compiler. Keywords are the words whose meaning has already

    been explained to the C++ compiler. The keywords cannot be used as variable

    names because if we do so we are trying to assign a new meaning to the keyword,

    which is not allowed by the computer. Examples of keywords are if, void, for,

    switch etc.

Data Types in C++

Data types are means to identify the types of

data and the associated operations to handle it. In C++ data types are broadly

of two types:-

Fundamental Data Types: These are predefined to the C++

    language itself. there are at least five fundamental data types.

char- represents that the declared variable of this type can store

        characters

       int- represents integers

       float- represents floating point numbers

       void- represents valueless data

   Derived Data Types: These are constructed from the fundamental

    types. I will not give you the details here because this is a bit high-level.

Instructions in C++ Programming Language

Now that we seen the

different types of constants, variables and keywords the next logical step is

to learn how they are combined to form instructions.

Type declaration instructions: to declare the type of

    variables used in the program.

    Eg:- int num;

    Here a variable num is declared of type int(eger).

   Input /Output instructions: to perform the function supplying

    input data to a program and obtaining the output results from it.

    Eg:-

    cin>>a;

    cout

    In the first line input is taken from the keyboard by the function cin and

    is assigned to a pre-declared variable a. In the second line ‘Hello’

    is printed using the function cout.

   Arithmetic instructions: to perform arithmetic operation

    between constants and variables.

    Eg:- c=a+b;

    Here c is assigned a value which is the sum of the variables a and b.

   Control instructions: to control the sequence of execution

    of various statements in a C++ program.

    Eg:- if (a>b) func1();

    Here it is checked whether a is greater than b, if it is, then program execution

    goes to a user defined function ‘func1′.

The first C++ Program

Armed with the knowledge about the

types of variables, constants, keywords etc. we would write down our first C++

program.

Each instruction in a C++ program would comprise of a series of statements. These

statements must appear in the same order in which we want them to be executed.

The following rules are applicable to all C++ programs no matter ho long or complicated

they are

Blank spaces may be inserted between two words to increase readability

    of the statements. However, no blank spaces are allowed within a variable,

    constant or keyword.

   Usually all statements are entered in small case letters.

   C++ has no specific rules for the position at which a statement is to be

    written. That’s why it is often called free-form language.

   Any C++ statement always ends with a semicolon (;).

Now, let us have a look at a program which calculates the sum of two numbers given

by the user.

//To calculate the sum of two given numbers

#include

main()

{

int num1; //declares a variable num1 of type int(etger)

int num2; //declares a variable num2 of type int(etger)

int sum; //declares a variable sum of type int(etger)

cin>>num1; //takes input and stores to the var num1

cin>>num2; //takes input and stores to the var num2

sum= num1+num2; //adds vars num1 & num2

cout

A few useful tips:-

Any C++ program is nothing but a combination of functions, main() is one

    such function which is always there in a C++ program in one form or the other.

    Empty parentheses are necessary after main.

   The set of statements belonging to a function is enclosed within a pair

    of braces

    Ex.

    main()

    {

    statement1;

    statement2;

    statement3;

    statement4;

    }

   Any variable is declared before using it.

   Any C++ statement should always end with a semicolon.

   iostream.h is the file needed to use the functions cin and cout, which

    is included in the program with the include keyword.

The Primary Regions of the Brain Studied in Brain Cancer Clinical Trials

Brain cancer clinical trials are used to test the various hypotheses of researchers and medical specialists. They are also used to focus studies on the symptoms discovered to be a direct result of the cancer and to determine more information about the specifics on the topic of brain cancer.

When professionals conduct a clinical trial, they focus on six areas of the brain. These areas are often referred to as the primary regions. There are many different reasons why these regions are studied so intently. In this guide, you will learn about the primary regions of the brain studied in brain cancer clinical trials.

The Focus

When medical professionals study those that are experiencing conditions of the brain, they work to identify the regions of the brain that are specific to the patient’s symptoms as a whole. This is basically due to the fact that each different region is responsible for day to day functioning. When an individual has brain cancer, they have the capability of experiencing a multitude of symptoms.

Professionals may observe the data obtained from the brain cancer clinical trials and determine where a tumor is, the size of the abnormal growth, as well as the speed in which the cancer is growing and/or spreading. Once that focus has reached a stage where progression as far as knowledge is concerned, the next focus is to determine what treatment measures will be appropriate to treat the tumor(s).

Primary Regions

As stated previously, there are six different regions of the brain that medical professionals evaluate during brain cancer clinical trials. The regions and a small description of functionality for each of the main regions listed below:

• Cerebellum – This region of the brain is located just above the brain stem on the backside of the brain. This area is responsible for balance, the posture of an individual, and the coordination in general.

• Brain Stem – This primary region of the brain assists in connecting the actual brain to the spinal cord. This region permits things to pass from the body to the brain and assists in maintaining the blood pressure and energy levels.

• Frontal Lobe – This region of the brain is located in the front section of the brain. This area has many responsibilities which include, but are not limited to cognitive functions, solving problems, and assisting in the development of the basic personality that an individual has.

• Occipital Lobe – While in the back region of the brain, this is positioned in about the center of the brain region. This region is the main area that controls the patient’s vision.

• Parietal Lobe – This region is directly behind the frontal lobe region. This region impacts a person’s ability to touch and even to feel. It is also responsible for cognitive functioning such as the ability to comprehend new information.

• Temporal Lobe – This lobe is located in both sides of the brain. The lobe on the left assists in memorizing memory that is verbal based. The right side controls memory that is visual in basis. This is the lobe that helps professionals determine the “right brain, left brain” topics that professionals write regarding the personality of an individual.

As you can see, there are many different areas of the brain that are studied in brain cancer clinical trials. If you are working with a doctor outside of the clinical trials and have experienced an issue with brain cancer, it is important to learn as much as you possibly can pertaining to this topic. This way, when it is presented to the doctor in the trial, it will be determined whether or not you are an ideal candidate for their brain cancer clinical trials.

How To Be A Published (Non-Fiction) Author

Turning your idea into a book

With non-fiction books the question of whether or not to write one has to be a business decision, rather as you would take over any new product or service.

With general non-fiction there is usually room for a good new book on the market, provided it’s likely to attract a substantial group of readers because:

*It’s about something entirely new and very interesting that no-one has written about before, or…
*It’s about something that’s not new, but to which you contribute something entirely new and very interesting

So why write a business book? Well, there aren’t many more effective promotional tools. Having a book published still holds a certain kudos and perhaps in Pavlov-dog fashion, people automatically associate someone who writes a book about something with that someone being an expert on the subject.

Used correctly, your book will also be a helpful PR tool in other areas, and will make a business gift that has a very high perceived value. But never make the mistake of thinking you will retire to the Bahamas on the proceeds of its sales.

Pick a good title

A book’s title is a very important part of the marketing of a book. With non-fiction and particularly business books, like every other piece of marketing communication the book title has to offer or at least suggest a benefit to the reader.

It’s the title people react to when they see a book displayed, whether that’s on a shelf in a bookstore or online. When people are looking through books you only have one chance to get their attention, which is why your title needs to be powerful enough to stop them in their tracks.

Sub-headings are now quite fashionable and they help a lot to qualify the promised benefit. I’ve used them for four books so far and they work nicely.

There are two basic publishing routes you can choose: self-publishing, or conventional publishing by an external publisher. In addition there are a few hybrid options available, as well as publishing services organizations which offer services to self-publishers on a menu basis.

The conventional publisher

The advantages of getting your book published externally are:

*It gives your book status (less so than in the past, but still good if it’s a well known, respected publisher)
*Your book will be distributed to all the agreed markets at no cost to you
*They will handle and pay for all design, setup, print and production costs
*You’ll probably get paid a small advance on royalties

The disadvantages are:

*They will be in the driving seat, although they will listen to what you want to do
*They will say that they’ll market the book, but many of them won’t (see below)
*You will need to negotiate your contract with them very carefully
*The percentage of each sale you receive will be far less than if you self-publish

Finding a publisher to approach is easy with the Internet. Because publishers tend to stick to specific genres of book (called “lists”) you’ll find them simply by searching for your type of topic via a search engine or online bookseller. There are also print directories of publishers.

Most publishers have websites, and some even give you the option to submit your preliminary book proposal online – which is well worth doing.

Approaching publishers and submitting proposals

If you’re going into a publisher cold, you’re best to start with a covering letter addressed to the correct person – usually a senior editor – and enclose with the letter a one-sheet on which you describe the essence of the book. Then wait for feedback before you submit proposals.

Once you have submitted your detailed proposals you may have to wait quite a while – several weeks – before you hear anything.

The offer and the contract

If you get the green light, the publisher will come back with a formal offer, saying “yes, we want to publish your book.” The “offer” part of it is the advance on royalties – but don’t expect much! Advances are normally paid in 2 or 3 tranches with payment points at signing of the contract, delivery of the manuscript, and publication.

Until you sign a contract you’re not under any obligation to proceed, even though you will have accepted the publisher’s offer. There are a number of key areas you need to take special care, so be sure to research them thoroughly.

Self-publishing

As the nuts-and-bolts elements of book production become cheaper through the advancement of technology, self-publishing becomes increasingly attractive for some business book writers. With modern print-on-demand facilities, too, you avoid the need to have hundreds or thousands of copies printed initially just to keep the unit cost down. Now you can have a handful of books printed at a time and still keep the unit cost within reason.

The advantages of self-publishing (as I see it) are:

*You do not have to answer to anyone else on design, content, editing, etc
*You do not have to spend any time on finding or convincing a publisher to take your book on
*You get to keep all profit from book sales

The disadvantages of self-publishing (as I see it) are:

*You have to find the money to get the book produced
*You can get editorial and design support, but you have to pay for it
*You have to organise and pay for distribution of your book
*You will not find it easy to get your book on to Amazon and into other key distribution channels
*You have to run a publishing business as well as whatever else you do

Commercial sponsors

In some circumstances it may be useful to get involved with a commercial sponsor. Who this is depends on the nature of your book. If, say, you have written a cookery book about pizzas, you might get interest from a national chain of pizza restaurants. If your book is about cats, you might get together with a catfood manufacturer. If your book is about DIY property renovation, you might get interest from a chain of DIY stores. And so-on.

Well, now that you’ve decided on a publishing route… it’s time to write your book.

Writing your book

A daunting prospect? Not if you approach it methodically. Here are some tips.

When you come to write the book and are faced with what many people call that “huge, impossible project,” here’s a trick that I was taught when shivering with fear about my first book.

Forget thinking about your book as one project. Think of it as XX discrete projects (one for each chapter.) Get that notion fixed firmly in your mind. 15 writing projects of 4,000 words each feels a lot more comfortable than one writing project of 60,000 words. You also get a greater sense of achievement as you’re working through the book, because the completion of each chapter becomes a major milestone.

Planning and structure

Don’t try to rush the planning stage and don’t rush into writing the first chapter. Carry a notebook around with you and scribble ideas, reminders and any other inspiration you get while doing the chores or shopping for groceries. Play around with spider maps or mind-mapping programs or whatever works best for you. The time spent will repay itself many times over.

With non-fiction of any kind it helps enormously to work to a closely defined structure. Spend a good chunk of time planning your chapters and ensuring they run in the right order. Subdivide the chapters down into bullet point structure of their own and flesh that out as far as you can.

If you’re going to use research material you need to assemble it and file it under each chapter of your book. Particularly if the research material is printed on paper, assemble it in the same order as the running order of each chapter. That way you don’t have to leaf through piles of material to find what you want.

If you have collated information electronically, read through it all and cut and paste the bits you want into another document, so that it runs in the order that your chapter runs. Then have it available as a document called “Chapter X, background research” which you can either open in a separate window while you’re working or print out and refer to on paper.

Chapter breakdown

Using your word processing software, separate the chapter breakdown into one document for each chapter. If you prefer to work with pens or pencils you can print out the document so that each subject heading heads up one page, then staple those pages together in order.

Now, start writing more bullets and notes under each subject heading. Leave plenty of space between them so you can add sub-notes and sub-sub-notes. Add in the information you want to include from your research material (this is much easier to do on a computer) in the appropriate places.

Work through this process without hurrying, but keep going for as long as you feel the creative energy flow. Once you have incorporated the bare bones of all information you feel needs to go into that chapter, stop and take a short break. Then go back to the chapter and edit your notes as necessary. The break is important; even if you only leave it for an hour or two. The fact of thinking about something else for a while means you look at your work from a refreshed viewpoint.

Writing it up

Now you need to take the plunge and start writing prose. Because you have mapped out the content of your chapter so carefully and thoroughly, you’ll find that some it has already started to write itself. Your job then becomes one of linking and smoothing, rather than having to think up stuff from scratch. This method doesn’t remove the fear of writing altogether (if you’re that way inclined) but it certainly makes it a lot easier.

Then, when you finish the final chapter, take at least a week off from the project. Looking at your work again, you’ll see a number of things that could be improved without really trying. And passages, paragraphs and even whole chapters that previously seemed OK but not quite there, will now look definitely not there! However because you’re coming back into it with renewed energy and vigour, what may have seemed like a difficult problem to rectify initially will now be much easier to put right.

Your own edit

Take your time over your editing process. And most important of all, be hard on yourself. Put yourself firmly in the shoes of a potential reader and ask yourself if – in this role – you would a) understand everything and b) find it interesting. If the answer is no to either then rewrite the section concerned until it IS a) understandable and b) interesting.

Be mindful of the final word count required for your book. If you’re over by a small amount, prune back unnecessary adjectives and adverbs (something you should do anyway.) If you’re over by a large amount you will need to think in terms of removing whole paragraphs or even whole chapters. It’s far better to remove large chunks than it is to prune the existing text too hard. Too much pruning will make it stilted and difficult to follow.

If you’re under the word count and you don’t need to keep some in hand in case other chapters are too long, don’t try to pad your work out to make it longer. This will make your book less crisp and lively. Instead – depending on the subject matter of course – insert examples, verbal illustrations, short case histories, charts, graphics or any other interesting material that supports your key messages without lengthening them.

Usually you can put material like this into a “box” so that it is seen to be separate from the main text. This way readers aren’t interrupted as they go through your text, and can look at the “box” when they’ve finished reading the paragraph or section concerned.

The external editor

If your book is being published externally, once you’ve finished your edit the manuscript will go the publisher’s editor. Once the edit comes back to you, you’ll have the opportunity to go through the issues raised by the editor and dispute their recommendations if you feel they’re wrong. Then when everyone is happy with the result, your manuscript goes into production.

If you’re producing the book yourself you don’t, in theory, need to use an editor at all. However unless you’re a professional writer by trade, if you’re self-publishing it makes a lot of sense to use a pro editor to have a look at your work. An informed but unbiased extra expert on the case will help you sharpen up your text and will pick up on all the little details that you – being so close to the material – may have overlooked.

And there you are – a finished manuscript! Now, to the final stage…

Producing and selling your book

If your book is being published externally you won’t have a huge involvement with the production process. This means that you’re relieved of the hassle and expense of production, but on the other hand you won’t have all that much control over how your book looks. Publishers will usually send you cover designs to look at as a courtesy, but don’t automatically assume they’ll change the designs if you happen to hate them.

Often a business or other non-fiction book will be published as part of a series of titles and so will have to be designed with a “family resemblance” to the other books in the series. Other times the design will be dictated by the publisher’s corporate image and colours. Usually, though, if your complaint is well founded they will listen and may well make some alterations to keep you happy.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover” — but it helps!

If you’re self-publishing you’re free, of course, to have whatever you like on the cover. Even if you have strong ideas about how it should look, in your shoes I would invest in a professional design for the cover. Particularly if you’re going to sell the book remotely (i.e. without your being there) that cover is the only real point-of-sale tool you have – so it needs to be good.

Publishing services companies usually offer cover design as a service. If you use an independent graphic designer, ask to see samples of his/her work on book covers before you commission yours. Although designing book covers is not rocket science you do need to know about how books are racked in bookstores, how to display the title, where to put what words, etc.

You will also need to compose your jacket copy to go on the cover. This usually consists of two chunks of sales copy about the book and one short chunk about you, the author. However how many sections and how many words in each will be determined when the cover is designed, and that should happen first.

Just as the title and cover design are critical elements at the point of sale for your book, so is the jacket copy. This has to sell hard enough to make them carry your book all the way to the checkout and stay there until they’ve paid for it. If you’re self-publishing and don’t feel you can create the snappy words required, hire a pro copywriter to do it. It won’t cost very much as it shouldn’t take them long to complete, and it will be well worthwhile.

How the main text looks

When you’re setting your raw text out for uploading to the designer and production people, start as you mean to continue by ensuring that paragraphs are reasonably short and that you break up your text with some or a mixture of the following:

*Section headings in bold, larger point size than main text
*Cross headings in bold and perhaps underlined
*Emboldened words and phrases
*Phrases pulled out from the text and centred, as a cross heading
*Small diagrams, charts, photographs
*Bullet points and numbered lists, if appropriate

Remember, for readers there’s nothing more offputting than long, unbroken blocks of text. And you want them to read all of your book, don’t you?

Marketing and selling your book

Publishers say they do marketing, but the reality is they don’t do much. And it really is annoying when you think that they are taking the lion’s share of the proceeds from your book sales. So if you want your book to be marketed, you have two choices.

The first choice is to hire a publicist. This is quite popular among American business gurus and public speakers who do not have the time but do have the money. Opinions are divided on whether or not you will get back what you pay the publicist in extra book sales you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

The second, and the more realistic choice for most of us, is to DIY. To achieve that without spending big bucks you need to consider a number of important points following publication of your book; however, once again, book marketing is not rocket science. It’s much more about using your common sense and taking up opportunities to get the word out there.

Well, that’s it – with luck you’ll sell a good number of books. Enjoy the experience!
